Growing our Health Care Team
The School of Allied Health Professions (SAHP) was established 44 years ago on April 2, 1970. Since the School’s inception, we have grown from 1 program to 9 academic programs. The SAHP offers various undergraduate and graduate degrees, including Audiology, Cardiovascular Sonography, Clinical Laboratory Sciences, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Physician Assistant, Rehabilitation Counseling, Respiratory Therapy, and Speech-Language Pathology. The School continues to see an increase in the number of applications, enrolled students and graduates over the past 5 years. In spite of continual state budget challenges, the School continues to fulfill its mission of educating future healthcare professionals. As noted in the increase of applicants, the LSUHSC SAHP continues to attract students who exemplify excellence in learning and
personal development. In addition, the School continues to contribute to the labor supply needed in health care, through
increased admissions numbers and increased diversity of health care programs offered.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, allied health professionals have a faster than average job outlook profile as
compared to other professions. In order to prepare students for the clinical environment, the SAHP has developed affiliations with over 460 clinical sites. In addition, the School has 125 faculty and staff members who support the ongoing education for students, alumni and colleagues. Our success would not be possible without the support of alumni, friends, faculty,
staff and students.

A recent donation to the Clinical Laboratory Sciences (CLS) department by Advanced Clinical Communications in Metairie, LA has funded the purchase a thermocycler. A thermocycler is commonly
used to amplify small amounts of DNA
via the polymerase chain reaction. Increasing the amount of DNA can assist
forensic scientists and scientists studying
genetic diseases. This is the first time the
CLS department has been able to purchase a thermocycler, and this piece of
equipment will be used primarily in the
molecular diagnostics course. The students are excited about being able to
learn about and use this piece of equipment in their studies. For more information about the CLS program, please
