MESSAGE FROM THE
TOURNAMENT DIRECTOR
Welcome to the second edition of the Hobie® Fishing Series
Newsletter. It’s been another great month. Will Lee has
taken out the Hobie® Fishing Bream Series presented by
Daiwa, Queensland State Title on the Gold Coast and things
are really starting to heat up in preparation for the Hobie
Fishing World Championships in October.
The pace is set to pick up in August and September with
Bass and Bream rounds in Queensland before both series
move south again to Victoria and New South Wales.
Preparation is underway for the final Worlds qualifiers at
the Hobie Fishing European Championships in Holland and
Round 13 of the Hobie® Kayak Bream Series presented by
Daiwa at St Georges Basin in NSW Australia.

ECOGEAR ZX SHRIMP BLADE
ECOGEAR VX BLADE
EXCLUSIVE AUSSIE MEGABASS COLOURS
The shrimp shaped ZX blade incorporates a series
of NEW design techniques for superior strength,
control, action, appeal and hook-setting ability.
The VX series has started a phenomenon in the
tournament scene; The VX represents the ultimate
balance of size and weight in a metal alloy blade
lure. The detailed design and craftsmanship make
the VX vibrate with the smallest rod movements, to
attract and stimulate bites.
Megabass lures have released a range of exlusive
Australian colours in three of their most popular
lures; PopX, Baby PopX and the Dog X Jnr. These
colours have been specifically crafted for local
species such as bream and bass.
Having a wide range of colours with three different
sizes and weights allows anglers to use the ZX over
a vast array of structures and depths.
The ZX range is not limited to size or particular
fishing environment and is capable of targeting
almost any light game species. A proven fish
catcher the ZX represents the ultimate peak in
blade style lures.
The VX has proven itself on the Australian
tournament scene and is considered essential gear
by many pro anglers. For the last 5 years, VX metal
blades in various sizes have been chosen to be
their go-to lure in Bream and Bass tournaments.

The new colours in the PopX and baby PopX,
are SMB, a jet black with a silver/blue back in

GOLD COAST, QLD
ROUND 11
Will Lee from Redcliffe takes out round 11 of the Hobie® Kayak
Bream Series presented by Daiwa to secure back to back Queensland
State Championships.
July 19 and 20, 2014 saw the Hobie®
Kayak Bream Series presented by
Daiwa hit the canals of Queensland’s
famous Gold Coast. Over 30 anglers
lined up for round 11 of the series
which also acted as the Queensland
State Championship.
The Gold Coast, normally known as
a tourist mecca, is also renowned
as a great competition fishery. The
location proved a worthy venue
for a Hobie fishing series round
and state championship. Fantastic
weather, excellent fishing and great
sportsmanship made this a truly
memorable event.
Will Lee from Redcliffe won the 2013
Queensland State Title last year at his
home fishery and has followed it up
with a win at the Gold Coast, to make
him a back to back state champion.
He has also secured a spot in the
Hobie® Kayak Bream Series grand
final to be held in November this year.
Some advice from a friend, “if you are
going to get a big fish, you’re going to
get it in the river”, was the motivation
for Will’s day one strategy and he
pedalled the long haul straight for
the river. Hoping to get a couple of big
ones early.
He fished tight to pontoons, skip
casting little grubs up into the nooks
and crannies but all he could find were
plenty of smaller bream.
“I was using heaps and heaps of Pro
Cure Mullet and just letting them sit
and letting the fish pick them up, so
it was important to watch that slack
line”, he commented.
Will bagged out (4 bream) by 9:30am
on the first day and then moved to
fish under bridges in the slack water,
snaring a couple of upgrades while
continuously catching small 27 tip fish.
Using his PowerPole regularly in the
windy conditions, Will targeted the
corners of the canals with the southerly
wind blowing onto them. He focused on
pontoons with water slapping up against
them, allowing him to skip cast hard and
not worry about the lure hitting the side
of the structure.
“Heading back to the launch position
I spotted some big bream but with
the clear conditions I just couldn’t get
them to bite”, he said.
Will used lots of his “Go to” scent, Pro
Cure Mullet on both days, caking as
Will finished day one in range of the
much as he could on the lure body, in
top positions with a full bag weighing
fact anywhere he could. “It’s a lot like
in at 1.62kg
bait fishing”, he mused.
With the wind picking up early on day
Will kept a close eye on the slack line
two, Will headed back to where he’d
and slowly wound it in, a technique that
seen the big bream on day one, just
netted him about 20 legals on day two.
350m from the start line. His plan was
The action was hottest between 7am and
to spend as much time as possible
9am and he managed to upgrade every
fishing, rather than travelling long
hour after that to bring back a 2.49kg
distances to and from more remote
bag to weigh in and to his surprise, giving
fishing grounds that had been his day
him a winning two day total of 4.11kg
one strategy.
Overjoyed with his back to back
victory, his only disappointment was
that it wasn’t a Hobie Fishing World’s
qualifier.

ROUND 11
GOLD COAST, QLD
BRYCE BEECHEY SMASHES IT FOR SECOND PLACE IN HIS NEW HOME TOWN
Former New South Wales angler and a
recent resident of the Gold Coast Bryce
Beechey, had a consistent weekend and
held onto his day one position to secure
second place with another consistent, full
bag of good sized keepers on day two of
the event.
“I think the key to my success was the
fluorocarbon straight through to the
plastic, it’s got a better sink on it where
the braid floats, the leader will sink and
the braid will float. Fluorocarbon straight
through is great because you can sink
your plastic under the pontoons”.
Beechey had a solid 2.24kg bag of four
bream on day one and followed it up with
a smaller but good enough bag of 1.84kg
on day two to give him a two day bag total
of 4.08kg
In a display of good sportsmanship,
Bryce Beechey generously donated
his prize pack to an appreciative fellow
competitor whose double doughnut
became a little tastier.
His plan of attack on day one was to fish
the pontoons, sand edges and bridges,
mixing it up with any structure that he
came across.
“Day one was better around the pontoons
and because the wind picked up heaps on
day two I caught a lot of fish on the sand
edges just drifting down with the wind”.

The new Hobie Mirage® Pro Angler 17T is a fishing machine with comfort,
stability and room for everything you need, including another person. Plus,
it’s powered by the patented Hobie MirageDrive® pedal system.
The award-winning Hobie Mirage® Pro Angler series is so popular that we
decided to produce another design that allows two anglers to fish in the same
boat. The PA17T is the perfect platform to teach a young one how to fish, take
a family member out, or simply fish hard with your best mate.
Both users can stand and fish in comfort and each cockpit is fitted with a large
rectangular hatch with pivoting tackle management system; there’s even
additional under-seat storage for plenty of tackle boxes.
With three rudder control steering handles, you can position the boat from
any seating location while you or your mate battles the big one.
The Pro Angler 17T is waiting for you and a friend to explore new waters and
better your biggest catches... it’s time to step aboard a Hobie!

2014 HOBIE KAYAK
FISHING SERIES
®
The Hobie Kayak Bream Series and Hobie Kayak Bass Series are
designed to offer kayak anglers a competitive framework under
the ABT umbrella. These competitions are cast and retrieve, lure
and fly only.
The bream series involves bringing your heaviest legal bream,
alive, back to the weigh-in while the bass series involves
presenting images of your catch on a digital camera card, as
well as a catch card, to the tournament director for sorting at the
completion of the tournament. (This competition format is also
known as a Catch, Photo and Release Tournament.)
Both series will have their own qualifying rounds, rankings,
payouts and prize schedules and will culminate in their own
series Grand Final, where qualifying competitors will fish in
identical Hobie-provided kayaks on a totally level playing field.
