2011 Library Annual Report
CONNECTING COMMUNITIES TRANSFORMING LIVES 2011 ANNUAL REPORT Dear Friends and Neighbors, The Z.J. Loussac Public Library opened to great fanfare on September 14, 1986 in midtown; this momentous event drew Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, author John Barth, poet John Haines and Mr. McFeeley and Purple Panda from Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood. When Loussac opened 25 years ago, technology was just beginning to take hold – the library’s compact disc collection was considered cutting-edge. The card catalog had just gone online. Today library patrons use a wide array of technological tools to access information and entertainment online. The library has grown right along with the times. Access to technology – computers and the Internet – is now a standard library service. We continue to provide books in print, but now we also provide “books” on CD, Playaways, downloadable audio books and e-books and, CDs and DVDs. Not only is the card catalog online, now you can access our website from anywhere to place a hold, renew an item or research your investment portfolio. Without losing sight of our traditions, we continue to adapt and respond to what our “When community wants and needs. Loussac opened 25 years ago, technology was just beginning to take hold” Whether you visit us online or in person, for research or recreation, the Library plays a critical role in all of our lives. Over 60,000 people of all ages attend programs each year; they may share a story, create a craft, learn a new skill or understand another point of view. In all, about 800,000 people visit the library each year – and sixty-three percent of residents have a library card. And believe it or not, books are still the bedrock of library service. Circulation surpassed 1.6 million items this year, despite a reduction in hours at our neighborhood libraries. The Loussac outdoor book drop must be emptied every two hours to keep up with demand! This is truly an exciting time for our Library. The opening of the new Mountain View neighborhood library marked the completion of the first phase of the Anchorage Library Renewal Initiative. Since the Initiative began, over $14 million has been raised from federal, state, local and private sources to open new libraries in Muldoon, Girdwood, Chugiak-Eagle River and Mountain View, and develop the Library Community Plan. Anticipation is growing as we embark on the second phase of the Initiative – a transformational renovation of the Z.J. Loussac Library and the creation of Teen Underground. We thank our wonderful supporters who have brought us this far and invite you all to join us for the amazing journey ahead! Karen Keller Library Director Gretchen Wieman Chair, Library Advisory Board Joseph J. Perkins, Jr. Chair, Anchorage Library Foundation Brooks Chandler Chair, Friends of the Library LIBRARY ADVISORY BOARD The board acts as the planning body for library activities and policies, reviews budgets and makes recommendations to the Administration and Assembly. Board members are appointed by the Mayor. Gretchen Wiemen, Chair Nancy Groszek, Vice Chair Sharon Clawson Fayedra Cole Brian Gerd, TAB Representative (term completed in 2010) Joy Green-Armstrong Dave Harrington 2011 Anchorage Public Library Annual Report 2 Lauren Heyano, TAB Representative Theodore Kassier (term completed in 2010) David Levy Jim Yeargan Technology in the Library Did you know? LIBRARIES IN THE AGE OF TECHNOLOGY Anchorage Public Library was a participant in the U.S. IMPACT Study. Led by the University of Washington Information School, and funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the Institute for Library and Museum Sciences, the study was released in March 2010 and contains specific data on APL patrons… Even though 93% of APL survey respondents reported having regular access to a computer with Internet somewhere other than the library, 90% still used computers in the library to access online resources. Of those who used the library computers for selfemployment activities, 34% started a business and 47% located potential customers. 77 million Americans use a library computer each year. HOW APL IS ENHANCING SERVICE THROUGH TECHNOLOGY… In 2007, all APL locations became wireless hotspots. Patrons have insider access to online tutoring service Live Homework Help and databases, such as auto repair guides.... APL’s website gets 90,000 visits each month, the most of any department, second only to the Municipality’s home page. APL is introducing an automated phone service (iTiva) to get renewal notices and account information 24/7. APL provides email notifications by email and online access to search the catalog, place holds, suggest a purchase and renew your items. In 2009, Clearwire donated a package to increase our broadband for wireless access at all APL locations. Teen Underground at Loussac will have a Smart Board, gaming stations and other must-have devices. Listen Alaska+ allows you to download digital audio and e-books to your personal device anytime, day or night. BUT BOOKS STILL RULE… Book bins at Loussac are emptied every 2 hours to keep up with demand! Over 1.6 million items were checked out last year. In 2010, we checked out 153 items for every hour of operation – that’s an increase from 145 in 2009 and 137 in 2008. APL is literally overflowing with books when we open after a holiday, after a three day weekend 2011 Anchorage Public Library Annual Report 3 Anchorage Library Renewal Initiative Phase One Completed The first phase of the Anchorage Library Renewal Initiative was completed in September 2010 with the opening of the new Mountain View Neighborhood Library. Since the Initiative began, over $14 million has been raised from federal, state, local and private sources to open new libraries in Muldoon, Girdwood, Chugiak-Eagle River and Mountain View, and develop the Library Community Plan. The Library Renewal would not be possible without the very generous support of our community! For generations, communities have invested in public libraries because public libraries are enablers of the great American dream. A public library is a safe place where each and every one of us can go to learn, to work, to meet others, to experience something new, to plan for tomorrow, or to simply be inspired – all free of charge, without judgment and with a friendly librarian to helps us in our endeavors! The Library thanks all of our supportive donors who contributed to the Renewal Initiative! The full donor list can be found on pages 8 and 9. “Thank you for my new Mountain View Library! I can walk to it, the books are sorted by age level, there are nice places to read the books, we don’t have to take the bus to get to it and can combine a trip to the museum with a trip to the library.” – 8 year old Mountain View Neighborhood Library patron “I love this library! My two daughters and I come every week. I am so thankful for such a resource for my family. When people ask me what I like about Eagle River, the library is one item I always mention. Again, thank you for providing such a resource for our community!” – Roy Buyse and Family, Chugiak-Eagle River Neighborhood Library patrons “I would like to tell you about my favorite library, which is Muldoon. This library may be small, but they also do an excellent job of getting my held orders ready for me to pick up. I truly do appreciate the Muldoon Library and feel that I am lucky to have such a nice place to go.” – Kara Edwards, Muldoon Neighborhood Library patron 2011 Anchorage Public Library Annual Report 4 Anchorage Library Renewal Initiative “The Scott & Wesley Gerrish Library is such an asset to my family, as well as a centerpiece of our community. As a home school mother, we use the library as our main resource for research, literature, and entertainment. It’s one of my favorite places in Girdwood.” – Amy Stone and family, Gerrish-Girdwood Neighborhood Library Patrons Anchorage Public Library The Future With the completion of the neighborhood library renovations, APL has launched the second phase the Renewal Initiative – a once-in-a-generation renewal of the Z.J. Loussac Library and the creation of Teen Underground. As the Loussac celebrates its 25th Anniversary this year, the Library will begin a large, multi-year project that will be completed in multiple phases. The renewal will prepare this vital and beloved Anchorage institution to serve our community for the next 25 years! Z.J. LOUSSAC LIBRARY GENERATIONAL RENEWAL The Loussac generational renewal is a signature project for Anchorage and is the leading recommendation of the Library Community Plan. A consistent message from the 6,000 community members who participated in the Library Community Plan was that a transformational renovation of the Loussac Library is critical to ensuring that the Library can remain relevant and competitive in the twenty-first century. The Library will seek a combination of government grants, a Municipal bond and private contributions to fund the entire renovation project. Improvements expected are a redesigned entrance that creates a public commons and a south-facing gathering space for community events. Inside, visitors will find a new lobby, teen center, information commons, upgraded children’s area, hightech Wilda Marston Theatre and revitalized Ann Stevens Reading Room. Recognizing that the Loussac Library is a transformational force in our community – and has played a significant role for generations of Anchorage residents and visitors – it is critical that we maintain and grow this great resource for our future. 2011 Anchorage Public Library Annual Report 5 Anchorage Public Library The Future The Anchorage Public Library has teamed up with the Anchorage Rotary Club and the Anchorage Library Foundation to create a pertinent, vibrant center in the Z. J. Loussac Library for teens aged 12-18 where they can study, collaborate, socialize and interact in a stimulating and safe environment. Local teens selected the name Teen Underground for the space. The project began in fall 2010 and opens in June 2011. Teen Underground is the local contribution to a national initiative to create “teen centers” in libraries as supplemental learning venues. The project was inspired by the YOUmedia project at the Harold Washington Public Library in Chicago. YOUmedia is a nationally-recognized teen center which opened in July 2009, with major support from the MacArthur Foundation. Prior to Teen Underground, there was no dedicated space in the library for teens; rather their resources were combined on the second floor with pre-school and grade school aged children. Located on the third level, the space is enclosed in glass modular walls and includes smart board technology, iPads, a MacBook learning lab and a new teen book collection. Teen Underground is based on the collaborative learning environment at Chicago’s YOUmedia teen center. Thanks to Rotary project leaders Cheryl Myers, Carol Butler and their team of volunteers for their hard work and incredible vision on this project! The project would not be possible without the support of our generous donors. Teen Underground Donors Post Graduate Level - $20,000 + Davis Constructors & Engineers, Inc.
