Developing Philanthropic Support
for Lakeland Regional Medical Center
and Lakeland Regional Cancer Center.
D
ear Friends and Supporters,
Lakeland Regional Medical Center
Foundation and Lakeland Regional
Medical Center are fortunate to have the
support and commitment from many volunteers
and community members. It is through their
generosity that the Foundation is able to impact
the quality and scope of care provided to the
patients at LRMC.
In March, we held the inaugural Cookin’
Men event. All proceeds will be used by
Women In Philanthropy to support women
and children’s health programs and services
at LRMC. Cookin’ Men was a great deal of fun for the chefs and all that
attended. You can find pictures in this issue and on-line at
www.cookinmen.org.
You will also find information on a variety of Foundation activities,
including more about Women in Philanthropy. We recently announced the
Philanthropist Of the Year – Chuck and Connie Bovay. We are pleased to
recognize the Bovays for dedicated service and support of the Foundation.
We are grateful for your generosity, support and commitment to
improving healthcare. I’m confident that you will find this issue of Touching
Lives both informative and interesting. Through your help we have been
able to provide the latest in technology, enhance our research capabilities
through cancer clinical trials, achieve status as a chest pain center, and
launch a new Lights for Life effort that will help bring a new Pediatric
Emergency Room to our community.
Your contribution can assist us in our continuing effort to improve the
programs and services, equipment and technology, and facilities at Lakeland
Regional Medical Center. Please consider sending a gift today for the LRMC
Foundation to support the programs and services in which you have a
special interest. A postage paid envelope is enclosed for your tax-deductible
gift to the LRMC Foundation.
Sincerely,
Dale E. Dreyer

A word from Chuck & Connie:
“The honor that the LRMC
Foundation bestowed upon us
was one of the biggest and nicest
surprises we have ever received!
Supporting our community with
time, talent and resources began
early in our marriage. We have both
taught Sunday school classes and
have been active in our church;
volunteered in the PTA when our
children were young; and have
served on city, county and state level
boards. One area leads to another
area and serving others becomes
a life-style. Our commitment to
LRMC and the LRMC Foundation has
been a remarkable experience and
opportunity for us both. Volunteering
to help within the Foundation
continues what others before us have
done for this outstanding facility.”
“We participate for the
difference it makes to others, not for
personal rewards. The “reward” is
in the knowledge that comes with
helping to make our community a
better place to spend our lives. We
“thank” those persons responsible for
giving us this recognition.”
pis
The Bovays have been loyal
supporters of the hospital, with
giving that dates back to 1986.
The Bovays are also members of
the Foundation’s Bridge Builder
Society – a special group of donors
who have made or arranged for
gifts through their estates.
In addition to their gifts,
the Bovays were recognized for
the generous volunteer commitments they have made to

Lakeland Regional. Mr. Bovay is
a former hospital board member
(1990-1996) and hospital board
chair (1996) as well as a current
Foundation board member (20002009) and past Foundation board
chair (2006). Mrs. Bovay was one
of the original steering committee
members for the hospital’s
Victorian Tea and currently serves
on the Executive Committee
of the Foundation’s Women in
Philanthropy Giving Society.
According to Ken Menefee,
Foundation Executive Director,
“What’s special about
Chuck and Connie Bovay
is the level at which they
commit themselves as
volunteers, not just to the
hospital but to numerous
organizations. There are so
many community groups in
Lakeland that would name
Chuck and Connie Bovay as
integral members of their
organizations such as the
Imperial Symphony, Central
Florida Speech and Hearing,
Lakeland Volunteers in
Medicine and the Florida
House. They both have
gone above and beyond just
attending meetings and offering
help. They are philanthropic
leaders with true hearts for
improving their community.”

Cookin’ Men Sizzles!
O
n March 28, 2009,
The Lakeland Regional
Medical Center
Foundation’s Women
in Philanthropy Giving
Society was proud to present a new
fundraising event to the Lakeland
community called Cookin’ Men.
This unusual event featured the
culinary talents of local volunteer
chefs, cooking up their specialties
to raise funds for women’s and
children’s services at Lakeland
Regional Medical Center and
Lakeland Regional Cancer Center.
With an attendance of over 500
guests, Cookin’ Men 2009 was
undoubtedly a casual evening
of culinary fun. Chefs served up
delicious offerings from Buffalo
Meat Balls to Louisiana Pork Roast
to Peanut Butter Lollipops in a
decorative and appetizing way.
The “Pink Panache Award” for
the best decorated booth was
presented to Matthew Cantrall
who served “Redneck Caviar Dip”
in a very creative manner!
Plans are already underway for
Cookin’ Men 2010!

Celebrates Another Successful Year!
Keynote Speaker Mary Foley
R
ed was the color of the
day for the 2008 Women
in Philanthropy (WIP)
Luncheon at the Lakeland
Yacht Club. Over 170
guests were treated to not only
a wonderful meal but a fantastic
program. Ihla Sloman, Women in
Philanthropy chairwoman began
the day by announcing the grant
recipients of the annual WIP grant
allocations cycle.
Keynote speaker Mary Foley
shared a compelling story on how
to Live Like Your Nail Color – Even
If You Have Naked Nails! Mary’s
message was filled with optimism
and motivation on how to stay
energized about life and effectively
deal with everyday stress. Whether
you prefer a “Wild Berry” color
or “naked nails,” it’s important
that you live a life full of passion
and energy while dealing with
6
demanding schedules and busy
careers. Mary led a great interactive
session with the audience, in which
the participants learned what their
nail color or naked nails said about
them. Mary expressed the true
definition of what it means to
be “bodacious and live like your
nail color.”
The funds raised by Women in
Philanthropy are designated for
the purpose of improving the
quality and scope of healthcare
that women and children receive
at LRMC and LRCC.
The Executive Committee
of Women in Philanthropy is
comprised of Ihla Sloman, Connie
WIP Chairwoman, Ihla Sloman
Bovay, Maryann Cassell, Denise
Crenshaw, Nancy Fisher, Bobbi
Griffith, and Linda Rich.

Despite having the right under Federal Law to
self-direct future healthcare decisions, less than 30%
of America’s competent adults have exercised that
constitutional right. Working within the framework
of National Healthcare Decisions Day (NHDD), which
is held annually on April 16, LRMC hosted an event
on January 16 for community and business leaders to
learn the vital significance of Advance Care Planning
(ACP) for healthcare. These leaders received an
introduction on ACP, then a compelling presentation
from Dr. Dean Sandifer, LRMC’s Director of Critical
Care Medicine. Closing remarks were delivered
by Dr. Scott Swygert, LRMC Hospitalist, about
the importance of planning for our own critical
illnesses, just as we plan for weddings, vacations
and retirements. One of the attendees of the January
event, the HR Director for a Lakeland-based business,
was extremely moved by the message and invited
LRMC speakers to her place of business. On April
7, hospital representatives conducted workshops
for over 200 employees on ACP. The Women in
Philanthropy grant to fund the educational event
on Advance Directives has had far-reaching effects
throughout Lakeland, to positively impact the
well-being of our community!

The 2008 grant recipients of funds raised by the
Women in Philanthropy giving society were recognized
during the group’s annual luncheon on November 14,
2008. A combined $34,990 was awarded as follows:

Lakeland Regional Medical Center has long been supported by the philanthropy of members of our community.
In recognition of this generosity, the hospital created the Morrell Society in honor of our first donor Jane Morrell,
who donated a piece of land in 1914 to found the Morrell Memorial Hospital. As our premier giving association,
the Society honors those donors whose cumulative gifts to the Lakeland Regional Medical Center Foundation have
reached $10,000 and above. We celebrate these leadership donors whose commitment means that our community
will continue to enjoy world-class healthcare that we can all be proud of and thankful for.

The LRMC Foundation also wishes to thank all our LRMC and LRCC employee donors who
contributed an amazing $252,274 during FY 2008. We encourage you to stop by and see the
new employee donor display in the hallway outside of B-201 near the B Lobby at LRMC. Due
to the number of employee donors, we doubled the size of our display so that we may properly
recognize and thank all our employee STARs (Sharing Together, Achieving the Remarkable)!

On average, $1 Million in donor funds are

Included in Fiscal Year 2008 is funding for The
Victorian Tea, development of the Palliative Care
program, Cancer Clinical Trials, equipment such
as a blanket warmer for LRCC and nurse call light
locators for several LRMC departments.
We are grateful for the support from the

reative Ideas to Consider
With stocks at record lows and retirement accounts diminishing, many of us who have been
loyal donors to our favorite charities are suddenly asking ourselves – can I afford to give?
The answer to this question may not be as simple as you think. Times of economic
fear actually provide a great opportunity to look at some wise ways to help your favorite cause.
Here are a few giving ideas that make sense in a tough economy.
P
lann
Giving in a Tough Economy
Charitable Gift Annuities
For the donor who wishes to receive some “return on their investment,” a Charitable Gift
Annuity can accomplish two things – provide a guaranteed rate of return and provide philanthropic
support to your favorite cause.
Donors, particularly

it looks as if rates will hold or
even trend lower during this
year. On the other hand, a prospective charitable gift annuitant at age 80 would qualify for a 7.1%
rate on a CGA. This is 4.5% to 5% higher than the rate he or she would receive with a CD.
Another factor considered by donors is the fixed payout and security
of the annuity. With market volatility at unprecedented levels,
seniors especially are concerned about the rapid change
in value of their equities.
Charitable Lead Trusts
Some donors are looking for ways to turn under
performing or high cost basis property into an arrangement
that fulfills their annual gifts to charity, while preserving
their assets for future use by the donor or the
donor’s family.
A great tool for this is a Charitable Lead Trust,
which works as follows:
1. Yearly distributions go to the charity.
2. The donor retains control over the principle assets.
Remainder beneficiary is typically the donor
or donor’s family.

Information excerpted from Crescendo
Interactive Article of the Month for
February 2009 and “New Life for
Charitable Lead Trusts, Grantor CLTs”
by Lani Starkey published in the Journal
of Gift Planning, Vol. 12, No. 2, 2008
n March, the Senior Donor Club hosted its very first
What’s Up Doc? education event. This year’s theme was
joint health, and attendees were treated to an exclusive
Q & A session with the Lakeland Regional Orthopedic
Associates at their new offices on Harden Blvd. Dr. Don
Serot, Dr. Mark Munson and Dr. Todd Hall spent close to an
hour answering various questions related to knee, hip and
shoulder surgery and replacements, arthritis and rehabilitation.
All the participants
were able to ask
specific questions as
well as talk with the
physicians individually.
The Senior Donor
Club will host the What’s
Up Doc? event each year
featuring a different topic
of interest to seniors. The
purpose of the Senior
Donor Club is to better
connect the Foundation’s
“Golden Age” supporters
to the various resources we have at Lakeland Regional Medical
Center. We currently have more than 120 members and host
several educational, social and screening events throughout the
year. If you are interested in becoming a member of the club,
you must be over 65 years of age and a current donor to the
Foundation (minimum gift of $25/year).
r
In essence, you are able
to provide income to a charity
by “loaning” assets over a
period of time, while never
relinquishing the ownership
of the assets. This can be a
flexible alternative to making
gifts to endowments, donor
advised funds or paying
multi-year pledges. Plus the
CLT provides a huge financial
safety net for the donors,
maintaining assets they may
need later in life.
If you would like more
information or to explore
the possibility of setting
up a gift plan, contact
[email protected]. It
is wise to consult with your
financial advisor or attorney
before making any gift decisions.

3. The charitable tax deduction
is taken in the year of the
contribution and consists of
the present value of all future
distributions to the charity.
4. Trust income or gain is taxable
on the donor’s personal
income tax return.
