A
s President of SCASM it is my pleasure to invite you to the 74th Annual SCASM
meeting at the Hilton La Jolla Torrey Pines in La Jolla, California. We have another
outstanding program planned, returning to this exciting venue in beautiful La Jolla.
La Jolla has a beautiful coast line to enjoy, fantastic shopping, great restaurants, and in
addition is only minutes away from other fun activities in San Diego, such as Sea World
and other popular destinations.
As in the past we have an exciting program planned, with many well known popular
speakers. We again will have a “Meet the Experts” Breakfast on Friday & Saturday
mornings. These sessions are a great way to learn something new, but in a smaller
venue. You can easily interact with the speaker and ask questions that you might have
related to the topic.
SCASM would also like to encourage under-graduates and graduate students to attend
the annual meeting and present their research during the poster session. bioMerieux,
Inc. and SCASM offer 3 student travel awards each year. Winners are invited to attend
the national ASM meeting the following year with all expenses paid.
I would also like to invite you to become involved with SCASM. You can begin by attending
our Board Meeting, scheduled for Thursday evening from 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM. The
Friday night President’s Reception will be held at the beautiful Birch Aquarium. Come
and chat with old friends and colleagues and network with new ones. Be transported
with the group by motor coach and enjoy cocktails and hors d’oeuvres while enjoying
some of the exhibits. This event is part of your full meeting registration fee. Vendors are
welcome to attend for an additional fee (see registration information).
Please return your reservation form as early as possible to ensure that you will be part of
this exciting event. There are also special room rates available at the Hilton for SCASM
members. Please check the general information page.
I look forward to seeing you in beautiful La Jolla!

in which clinical laboratories are adapting to the
revised CLSI breakpoints for Enterobacteriaceae.
Dr. Sakoulas will discuss decreasing susceptibility to
glycopeptides (e.g., vancomycin) among MRSA and
what this means for treatment of MRSA infections.
And the highlight will be a presentation by Dr. Brad
Spellberg, renowned researcher, clinician, and
author of the 2009 book, Rising Plague: the Global
Threat from Deadly Bacteria and Our Dwindling

(Donna Wolk, PhD, D(ABMM))
This academic session will explore the diversity of
microbiology. First, we will dive into the sea with the
microbes residing in the coldest, darkest place on
earth. Then we will move to land, where Chlamydia
continues to thrive among humans. Next we will take
to the air, with the mechanism of influenza infection.
Finally, we will explore the future of microbiology,
focusing on the tools and opportunities available to
young scientists.
This session will encompass some of the most important
issues for the clinical microbiology laboratory regarding
stool cultures and gastrointestinal diseases. The topics
will include an update on stool parasitology, bacterial
stool cultures, with a highlight on Shiga-toxin
producing E. coli, and viral gastroenteritis.

Education
Education is the major component in the purpose of the Southern
California Branch of the American Society for Microbiology
(SCASM). Through its educational activities, SCASM contributes to
the profession and helps to increase, refine, and perpetuate the
microbiologist’s body of knowledge. With an exceptional faculty
presenting relevant, diverse and stimulating workshops and sessions,
this is a meeting you cannot afford to miss! SCASM is recognized
by the State of California as an Accrediting Agency for Continuing
Education for Clinical Laboratory Sciences.
Scientific Exhibits
In addition to quality education for a very reasonable price, you will
have an opportunity to visit with the companies that provide products
and services to your lab. The SCASM Annual Meeting Committee has
arranged for an effective exhibit schedule. Take advantage of this
valuable opportunity to review new products and ask questions about
ones you currently use.
CEU Documentation
CEU documentation is available and included in your registration
fees. If you require CEU’s, arrive early to your sessions to allow time
to sign-in. You must attend the entire session. No exceptions. A total of
12 units may be earned if you attend all sessions.
