Intro
Insomnia Festival is based
in Tromsø, north of the Arctic
Circle and far away from
any other big cities, both in
Norway and our neighbour
countries. The city is surrounded by only small villages
and desolated landscape. It’s
always a possibility to be close
to nature, and the feeling of
being far north can capture
you easily on your way home
from town.
It is here we try to explore
innovative culture and human
behaviour by inviting artists
from all kinds of genres and
backgrounds. In October we
turn Tromsø into a lab and you
are our rats. No, just kidding.
It’s just a music festival for
new innovative music. But we
are a bit eccentric about what
we do and everything we do
has its purpose and is based
on a lot of thinking.
Play
Fast Forward
Record
Last year we wanted to be big and beautiful and
focused a lot on booking commercial headliners.
We soon noticed that instead of chasing the big
established ones, we wanted to use our energy on
what’s to come.
We want you to look upon us as a tool for exposure
and exploration of future music and techno culture.
We play, fast forward and record. A lot of bands are
going to play, we jump to the next thing in music
and technology; and finally we have recorded a
demo just to be certain we didn’t miss anything.
Insomnia has become an important arena for electronic music in the far north and also abroad. We
want to invite skilled artist and curious people to
stay with us at least once a year to share interest
in what’s going on right now and maybe get the
grip of why. Or rather not, just enjoy ourselves. This
year we present a range of artists with the aim to
skill our ears and expand our minds.

Håkon Kornstad (Oslo)
Saturday 13th, Haakon Scene
Last time he visited Insomnia was in 2005 with the band Wibutee. This year you can
experience Håkon with his solo project, where he is experimenting with multifonic techniques and new ways to play the saxophone, an instrument that’s often related to the
clichés of jazz solos. Håkon is one of the most important artists coming from Norway,
and he is always pushing boundaries and evolving the way we experience music and also
contributing to a more interesting jazz electronic scene in Norway.
Håkon will also appear in the Design+Music seminar at Verdensteateret on Saturday.
Joakim & The Ectoplasmic Band (Paris)
Friday 12th, Haakon Scene
Joakim Bouaziz has in the later years evolved in to
a major figure in the modern French music scene.
He founded the record label Tigersushi, and has
done remixes of artist like Air, Tiga, Tiefschwarz,
Fisherspooner, and our own Annie. His music is a
mix of dance floor tracks and songs inspired by 80s
underground punk, electro pop and mystical ambient. On his latest album Monsters & Silly Songs,
we encounter music cut from live performance
with The Ectoplamic Band, inventing a new vision
of rock influenced by indie artists like Aphex Twin
and Arthur Russel.
Moder Jords Massiva (Stockholm)
Friday 12th, Vörter Scene
Moder Jords Massiva is a Swedish electronic
collective that consists of up to 20 musicians. They
started back in the 90s, and have amused audiences
all over the world. 14 people from the collective will
come to Insomnia offering a blend of dub, house,
and electronica where vocals and improvisation are
fundamental.
artists
Diskjokke & Vinny Villbass (Oslo)
Friday 12th, Vörter Scene
This DJ pair comes from Oslo and has been working together for six years. They play a type of music
that can be categorized as something between
disco and nudisco, where quality is of utmost
importance and exploration of various genres
results in a good mix of house, electro, disco, krautrock, moog-pop, dub, and Madchester.
After filling the dance floor at the Numusic
festival in Stavanger the duo are venturing north to
Insomnia with the full intention of infecting us with
voracious dance fever.
DJ Friendly (Stavanger)
Appearing all nights
DJ Friendly, also known as Erik Eriksson, has
been a music journalist and DJ in Stavanger for
over 20 years. He offers a mix of ambient beats and
house on Norway’s FM-station NRK P3 on Saturday
& Sundays. On Thursdays he speeds things up with
house and techno.
He has been a regular at Insomnia Festival
since 2003. If you listen to him play, he will surely
become just as good a friend to you as he is to
Insomnia Festival!
Thomas Danger (Bergen)
Saturday 13th, Vörter Scene
After a decade of producing all kinds of house
and techno, Thomas has developed and refined his
style of music – click-clack grooves, touchy techno,
beat-clashed smooth, and clever. Wherever he
decides to settle, the neighborhood is sentenced
to the eternal torment of high-volume grooves and
radical deepness.
“Thomas Dangers’ live sets are minimal and
complex. Minimal techno is the main field he is
operating in, but he can also deliver a hard techno
set.” – SEXTAGS

120 Days (Kristiansund)
Saturday 13th, Haakon
Scene
120 Days is pop degraded, rock
electrified, dance deregulated.
Part electronic bliss, part drone
rock terror, part shimmery pop
hooks, 120 Days is nightmare
music for when you’re wide
awake. Head down this road,
nightcrawlers, and there’s no
turning back!
120 Days visited Insomnia last year, three days before releasing their internationally
acclaimed debut CD, and here is a new chance for you to experience them again.
Monomen (Sørumsand)
Saturday 13th, Haakon Scene
Monomen hail from a place called Sørumsand
outside of Oslo. The quartet has proven that they
aren’t just young pups, but have a promising and
long career ahead of them. It is impossible not to
be impressed by the strong integrity of these teenagers and their tasteful reference to such musical benchmarks as Cabaret Voltaire, Magazine,
Depeche Mode, New Order and younger groups
like Radiohead and Interpol.
On “Monomen LP” we can hear influences from the late 70s/early 80s, but the music
is in a class of its own – atmospheric, with hints of noise and pop.
Bjørn Torske (Tromsø)
Friday 12th, Vörter Scene
Originally from Tromsø, Bjørn Torske is back in
town for Insomnia Festival. He started at Brygga
Radio in Tromsø and has evolved into one of
Norway’s most influential electronica musicians.
DJ, producer, and house musician, Torske is
argued to be the godfather of Norwegian house
music. He is also one of very few Norwegian DJs
who has made it to the British top 40. If the man
touches Sjettikadisko, it will turn to gold.

Jan Jelinek (Berlin)
Saturday 13th, Vörter scene
Berlin-based Jelinek is a DJ, musician, producer
and re-mixer. His music is all about the transformation of sound; of finding a method to translate
the sounds of Motown or funk into simple and
abstract electronica.
Despite all of the various roles he has taken
on, Jelinek’s music has never been limited or
affected by the boundaries of style. His music,
instead, strives to capture the essences of sound
that are beyond categorization.
Notic Nastic (New York/Berlin)
Saturday 13th, Vörter scene
Notic Nastic is a part of the
underground music scene in
Berlin and you can expect a genuine and authentic club experience
when these guys take the stage.
It’s dark but it’s ok.
Notic Nastic use old, analogue
synthesizers, wear their musical
heart on their sleeve, and cross
the finish line in fine and powerful form.
Daniel Meteo (Berlin)
Saturday 13th, Vörter scene
The hype around cleaned-up, purely functional
minimalist techno doesn’t seem to be affecting
Meteo. He prefers to take the extra time in order
to capture the full sound and to dig deeper and
extend into other musical horizons. Tech-house
combined with his love of ideas, harmonies, and
sounds turns into an audio picture of euphoric
quality.

Apparat (Berlin)
Friday 12th, Haakon Scene
Apparat, better knows as Sascha
Ring, has had an amazing year!
After releasing his album Walls,
he has toured all the important
electronic music festivals, delivering a solid electro/techno laptop
assault that has left people shaking in its aftermath.
Apparat’s music creates its
own delightful virtual world based
on a sea of genres, and through
it you are given enough emotional
experiences to last a lifetime. The
music has no clear boundaries,
the only thing left to do is show up
and experience it for yourself at
Insomnia.
Doc. L. Junior (Tromsø)
Thursday 11th, Vörter scene
Kolbjørn Lyslo is a well-known houseproducer and DJ from Tromsø. Influenced by
electronic music from Detroit and Chicago, Kolbjørn is one of the musicians in Tromsø
who has carried on the high tech soul of dancemusic.
Long before there was any known electronic music scene in Norway, he was an innovator both as a musician and as a DJ. Having released quite a few 12” and rarely giving
concerts, we can expect an ambient concert extraordinaire.
BinärPilot (Bodø)
Thursday 11th, Vörter scene
Our young friend Alexander Støver is originally from Bodø in northern Norway, but is
now one of many pedestrians in our capitol city Oslo. We discovered him by accident at
By:Larm 07 in Trondheim. He showed up like a shining star all alone on stage with his
laptop. His enthusiasm spread quickly to the rest of us. Our feet started tapping and all
of a sudden our hearts were filled with joy and love because music has a way of moving
us that make words insufficient.
Festival. Nytt i år er støtten til Døgnvillfestivalen.
Studentbyen Tromsø blir stadig bedre.

Doctor Kataztrofa (Finnsnes)
Thursday 11th, Vörter scene
Doctor Kataztrofa is a musical doctor. His agenda
is to sneak himself into your brain through funky
rhythms. Slowly lobotomize you with juicy baselines, and leave you in the belief that you’ll probably never have health problems again.
Cheesy synthpop, electro, and videogames are
the inspiration to his music. The doctor will take
over your local hospital, jam your prescription and
give you anti-depressives as long as the pills are
in stock!
DJ Omar
His real name is Ole Martin Vilberg and is an important figure in Oslo’s club scene. In
earlier days he was one of the driving forces behind the old club “Skansen”. Amongst his
new projects are “Frydenlund Funk”.
DJ Kyd
One of Tromsø’s many exile producers, renowned for his collaboration with Kango and
for his solo project Syntax Erik. His music is centred on catchy beats for the dance floor.
As a DJ he is known to play a superb mix of elector, house and hiphop.
DJ Joar
Joar is something as original as a DJ from Narvik, a city usually much discredited by
Tromsø people. We will try to prove you wrong. His music is a mix of old funk and disco,
in that sense DJ Joar represents Insomnias musical heritage.
DJ Maximo
Originally from Germany/Argentina but now living in Tromsø, Maximo is one of the DJs
behind the club concept “Moist”. Where some like to focus on the harder elements in
techno music, Maximo always tries to create a positive atmosphere, inviting you to dance
on for hours with your eyes closed.

NY MUSIKK PRESENTS:
Andy Moor/Yannis Kyriakides (Amsterdam)
Saturday 13th, Vörter scene
Hailing from opposite ends of the experimental music spectrum this duo has been making
music together for over 5 years. In more recent
years Andy has involved himself more with the
Amsterdam improvisation scene. Yannis Kyriakides
is an award-winning composer who strives to create new forms and hybrids of media. The question
as to what music is actually communicating is a recurring theme in their work and they
are often drawn to the relation between emotion and language and how that defines our
experience of music.
NY MUSIKK PRESENTS:
Veliotis/Kaasbøll/Duch (Athen, Trondheim)
Thursday 11th, Vörter scene
This trio met for the first time in October of 2005. In two days they did a studio recording and a concert, and in may of 2006 the record “The sea looks green when the sky is
grey” came out on SOFA music. This trio base their music on the 60’s fluxminimalist La
Monte Young, where every piece comes out of a drone that slowly develops in texture and
colour. Their music sometimes also remind of an acoustic version of the drone-doomband “Earth”.
NY MUSIKK PRESENTS:
Fear Falls Burning (Antwerpen)
Friday 12th, Haakon scene
Fear Falls Burning is Dirk Serries’ love letter to the world of electric guitar drones.
Serries launched Fear Falls Burning in the winter of 2005 as an outlet for his fascination
with lo-fi and post-rock music, and as a way to return to his roots in drone music, where
he first began more than 22 years ago. By processing the sounds of his Les Paul guitars
through a large and elaborately configured collection effects pedals, Fear Falls Burning
produces improvisational music that is by turns meditative, rhythmic and occasionally
thunderous.

Finn The Giant (Malmø)
Friday 12th, Laika 4-ever-ever-land
Founder of the Giant Sounds label and main riddim builder and dub mixer in the Giant Sounds
studio. Determined to make fat, heavy music that
still got soul. At Insomnia he will play an exclusive
“Laika The Space Dog Tribute” live set with circuitbent synths and heavyweight galaxy sounds.
Sir Alice (Paris)
Concert: Friday 12th,
Vörter Scene
Workshop: Thursday 11th and
Friday 12th at Tvibit 15.00–18.00
To participate: send mail to
[email protected]
Sir Alice is one of the most anticipated solo artist ever to release
material on Tigersushi and The
Perfect Kiss (PIAS). Here is a case
of extreme artistic schizophrenia.
Daquet partakes in an incredible array of art ventures ranging
from multimedia installations to
body art performances, passing
by IRCAM world famous musical
research institute, including the
implication with an angst-ridden
guitar band when she was a kid,
and all of this without the character loosing the slightest of its
rage. At insomnia she contributes
with a workshop at Tvibit that
will deal with the different kind
of human/machine interfaces in
the fields of artistical creation:
live music, performance art field
and even theater and interactive
installation.
Sir Alice will also appear at
Driv both in concert and through
several stunts and performances.

Laika, 4-ever ever land
Friday 12th, outside Driv
3rd November, 1957, the Russian dog Laika was
rocketed into the stratosphere. The first living
creature in space, since then nobody has seen her.
Laika, meaning barker, was sent into space
without a return ticket. A deadly mission so to
speak, not very kind. Many question how long Laika
lived and how she died. Some even say she may
still be alive!
This year, 2007, it is 50 years since Laika were rocketed out in her Sputnik 2 never
to be seen again. Inspired by this story and the movie “My Life as a Dog”, Electro Trash
Crew wish to make a tribute to the memories of Laika through the Laika 4-ever ever
land. In their space lounge you will experience clear skyes, satellites, true zero gravity,
spheric dub electro and reggae. Enjoy!
ReacTable, Barcelona
Concert: Saturday 13th, Haakon scene,
Seminar: Thursday 11th October at Verdensteatret
Public Exhibition: Friday 12th October from 14.00–21.00
The Reactable is a collaborative electronic music instrument with a tabletop tangible
multi-touch interface made by the a team of digital luthiers under the direction of Dr.
Sergi Jordà The “Interactive Sonic Systems” team is working in the Music Technology
Group within the Audiovisual Institute at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona
Spain. Several simultaneous performers share complete control over the instrument by
moving and rotating physical objects on a luminous round table surface.
The Icelandic singer Björk fell in love with the instrument and incorporated the
ReacTable as a key instrument of her Volta world tour. During Insomnia you have the
chance to learn more about this fantastic instrument through both a public seminar, an
exhibition where you can try the table yourself and a concert at Driv.

SEMINAR
Universal design
Friday 12th, Tvibit, 12.00–15.00
Universal design is the design of products and environments to be usable by all people,
to the greatest extend possible, without the need for adaptation or specialized design.
Tromsø municipality is one among sixteen pilot municipalities in a national commitment
for universal design. The intend of universal design is to simplify life for everyone by
making products, communications, and the built environment more usable by as many
people as possible at little or no extra cost. Universal design benefits people of all ages
and abilities. The core of this thinking resolves around the important issue of accessibility for people with reduced functionality based on equal opportunities and equal rights.
The municipality of Tromsø is in the planning process of a new project with the working
title “virtual meeting points”. This workshop during Insomnia Festival is proposed as a
brainstorm for further work and initiatives, recruitment and participation. For registration, contact [email protected].

DOCUMENTARY
Scratch
Fokus Cinema
10th/12th/14th October 19.00
Director: Doug Pray
Cast (as themselves): DJ Qbert, Rob Swift and
The X-ecutioners, Steve Dee, Cut Chemist,
Numark, DJ Craze, The Bullet Proof Space
Travelers, The Beat Junkies
The story of scratching involves many moments
and coincides-accidents, discoveries, instants
of creative inspiration. Then again, it’s not just
one story. Part collective history, part social
documentary, part personal reflection, and part
political rumination.
The film traces history, including interviews
with Afrika Bambaata (founder of Universal Zulu
Nation in the South Bronx, in 1973), Mix Master
Mike, Rob Swift, Jazzy J, DJ Premier (now of
Gang Starr, with Guru), all discussing their “first
exposures” (Kool Herc was “like God”), their efforts to advance the culture, and their
dedication to it.
DOCUMENTARY
High Tech Soul:
The Creation of Techno Music
Fokus Cinema: 11th/14th/ 15th October
19.00 and 13th October 21.00
Director: Gary Bredow
Gary Bredow’s documentary High Tech Soul: The
Creation of Techno Music traces the evolution of
techno from its origins in Detroit, in the late ‘60s,
to an international phenomenon by the late ‘80s.
The program explores the connections between
the actual sound of techno music and sociocultural
elements of the Motor City, and studies the myriad
of ways in which techno continues to set and shape
contemporary trends. Interviewees include Kevin
Saunderson, Juan Atkins, Derrick May, and many
other cutting-edge techno musicians.
