Coordinator Connection. . .
As we enter the month of February, we will be focusing much of our month
around acts of kindness and love. With Valentine’s Day approaching we have the
perfect craft, creating Acts of Kindness cards to share with others. This is a great way
for us to model kind and caring behavior to our children. Alone we certainly cannot
solve all the worlds’ problems, but if we can even make one person’s day a little
brighter than we are having an amazing impact on the world! So, this month let’s focus
on “noticing the goodness” whether big or small in EVERYONE!!!

Mentor Musings
Celebrating Love
Valentine’s Day; do you celebrate it? Are you all-in for the chocolates and roses, or do you boycott it by
saying “it’s a Hallmark holiday”? I find it to be kind of a strange day marketed to men as the day they must give
jewelry and candy to their significant other. The pressure is on to make it perfect, or else their wives are sure
to be disappointed or angry with them. Not only that, but in turn, the women of the relationships need to act
all sexy and amorous towards the men in their lives too. I don’t know about you ladies, but after a day of
working, whether it be at the office, or catering to the needs of little people at home, the sexiest I will get is by
pulling out clean pajamas that night instead of falling asleep in the shirt I wore all day and a pair of shorts.
Note that I said FALL ASLEEP!
Is it really important to do all those things I mentioned to show your love for your spouse? If one of
you screws-up Valentine’s Day, is that saying you don’t love each other? What about all the days you care for
the children, prepare dinner, clean up, run errands, organize everyone’s schedules, pay the bills and still
manage to greet your husband with a smile (and maybe if he’s lucky, a kiss) at the end of the day? How about
your husband waking up early to shower and get out the door for a meeting, working all day and dealing with
stressful situations, then coming home to his rambunctious kids and still looking at his wife with desire? Aren’t
these daily acts all signs of love? Don’t they say “I love you” without purchasing candy and lingerie? Reality
check #1.
We have all heard the Bible verse from 1 Corinthians 13; Love is patient, love is kind, it does not boast, it
is not proud, it does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of
wrongs…” I don’t see the words “love is the perfect bracelet” or “love is a romantic dinner at a fancy
restaurant”. Reality check #2.
Part of me is a little mad that I’ve been conditioned to think that if my husband doesn’t act like Jane
Austen’s Mr. Darcy, or write me a sonnet like Shakespeare, that I’ve been gypped! I mean, really, Catherine.
The poor guy can’t compete with that! I did marry him, and that was because I loved him. Not for the
chocolates or the jewelry, but for him. I need to remind myself that little fact as Valentine’s Day approaches
each year! Reality check #3.
I also need to remind myself of the greatest act of love that ever could be expressed. God giving his
one and only son to die for us on the cross so that we could be forgiven. There is no way to compare that
awesome gift from God to a red heart-shaped box of chocolates! Reality check #4.
Now that I’ve landed in the “real world”, I must admit that writing this little Mentor Moment has been
extremely helpful to me. I still plan on giving my children and most importantly, my husband, a Valentine’s
card this year, but I won’t be looking for the flowers and gifts to make the day special. I will be thanking God
for my family, for forgiving me, and for showing me what love truly is. 1 Corinthians 13:13: and now these
three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

WE DID IT! Thanks to your generosity and support, we have raised over $1,060 to go to the Boone County Child Advocacy
Center!!! We still have a few more items left to post from our garage sale, so I can't wait to see that number grow even
more. You guys are amazing, thank you!
For March and April, the BCCAC is in need of basic office supplies. If you are able, please bring in a ream of office paper
(white or colored), DVD RWs, or 9V batteries. They do have some specific items on their Amazon Wish List if you would
like to donate outside of our collection. The wish list can be found at: http://www.amazon.com/gp/registry/wishlist/

Lutheran Church MOPS Facebook page. The BCCAC has already had a busy 2016 with 20 interviews conducted in January
and these supplies will help them continue to serve the children and families of Boone County.
Kassie Frazier, the director at the BCCAC, has also extended an offer to our group to provide the Stewards of Children
training to anyone interested. It's a 2.5 program that she would be happy to come and deliver to those interested. Darkness to Light's Stewards of Children is a child sexual abuse prevention program for adults. Stewards of Children
teaches adults how to prevent, recognize, and react responsibly to child sexual abuse. It is a very impactful and
meaningful program, please contact me or Kassie directly ([email protected]) if you're interested!
