WESTWOOD PLATEAU
2001 Neighbourhood Census Profiles
Westwood Plateau
The Census is conducted once every five years by Statistics Canada to develop
a national statistical portrait. The most recent survey was held on May 15,
2001. The City of Coquitlam Planning and Development Department has
compiled data from several key census topics to provide a detailed overview
for each of Coquitlam’s 12 residential communities. Specific census topics
have been organized under the categories of People, Households and
Dwellings. The analysis includes a comparison between the data for each
community and the data for the entire city.
People: This section explores population change, population by age, marital
status, ethnic origin, home language and level of education.
Households: This section looks specifically at household income, household
type, family type, and number of children to provide an understanding of the
overall household composition for each area of Coquitlam.
Neighbourhood Population: 14,685
Gross Area: 2311.4 HA
Dwellings: The physical composition of the built environment is explored
by examining dwellings
by structural type, tenure
(proportion of rented and
owned accommodation),
and by the age of housing
stock.

COM M U N I T Y S E RV I C E S
Westwood Plateau has been a focal point of residential growth in Coquitlam since its
development began in 1989. The area experienced considerable growth during the 1990s.
On-going construction is concentrated primarily on multiple family dwellings.
The community has a significant proportion of single-detached and duplex dwellings,
while also accommodating a high percentage of townhouse units. The majority of dwellings are owner occupied (89%). Westwood Plateau also has an average household income
well above the City’s overall average.
Reflecting the impact of immigration on the Lower Mainland, “The Plateau” is a community of varied cultures. Well over half of the population (59%) immigrated to Canada, 72%
arriving between 1991 and 2001.
Green space abounds on the Westwood Plateau, from neighbourhood parks to an extensive trail system and two golf courses.

all at easily accessed locations on the “Plateau.”
Additional retail and service outlets are
located nearby in Eagle Ridge and the
