SIENA
The province of Siena, one of the richest and most diverse territories in Tuscany: the crete, or
literally the “Siennese clays”, dotted with isolated cypress trees and ancient stone farmhouses,
the valleys of the rivers Farma, Merse and Orcia, rich in wildlife and vegetation, the vineyards
that extend from the Chianti area to Montalcino, the vast expanses of cultivated fields which
from spring to late summer are colored yellow with sunflowers, golden with wheat and in
the winter take on an almost austere aspect. The Val d’Orcia Artistic, Natural and Cultural
Park, which embraces the Mount Amiata, popular destination for tourists in summer and ski
enthusiasts during the winter; and the Val di Chiana, famous for its thermal baths and rich in
Etruscan remains.
ART
Siena: the Civic Museum, the Opera della Metropolitana Museum, the Cathedral, Piazza del
Campo, the Santa Maria della Scala Museum, the National Gallery of Siena, the Chigiana Academy, the Palazzo delle Papesse Centre for Contemporary Art and the historic mansions that
are located inside the walls are just some of the more prominent tourist destinations in the city.
The medieval town of Monticchiello, Monteoliveto with its magnificent Benedictine Abbey not
far from Montalcino with its imposing fortress and home of the prestigious Brunello wine, to
then head down towards the Abbey of St. Antimo, founded, according to legend, by Charlemagne and now famous for its Gregorian chant. Additionally San Galgano and the Romanesque
Church of Montesiepi near Chiusdino, Bagno Vignoni, Pienza desired by Pope Pius II Enea Silvio
Piccolomini and planned by the architect Bernardo Rossellino, San Quirico d’Orcia and the
beautiful Collegiate, San Gimignano, the “city of beautiful towers”. Chiusi, one of the capitals
of the Etruscan civilization to Montepulciano renaissance city that gave birth to the poet Angelo
Ambrogini, commonly known by his anglicised nickname Politian.
EXCURSIONS
The Nature Train crossing the Val d’Orcia, horseback riding and cycling along the Via Francigena and in the Val di Farma, the stops along the “strade del vino” to visit wine estates and taste
great wines, the trails of Mount Amiata, the dirt roads crossing cultivated fields, olive groves and
noble vineyards and the paths winding through centuries-old oak woodlands.
FOOD AND WINE
An area that has such varied types of crops cannot but offer dishes based on traditional rural
cuisine such as: ribollita (Tuscan soup), pici (hand-rolled pasta), Cinta Senese pork cured meats, pecorino cheese, game dishes, porcini mushrooms and truffles, honey; well-known Siennese sweets: panforte (Italian fruitcake), cavalucci (anise cookies) and ricciarelli (almondbased
biscuits), all seasoned with the finest local extra virgin olive oils and combined with some of the
most famous Italian wines: the DOCG (controlled and guaranteed origin denomination): Brunello
di Montalcino, Vernaccia di San Gimignano, the Nobile di Montepulciano, Chianti, great DOC
(controlled origin denomination) wines such as: the emerging Orcia, Rosso di Montalcino, Rosso
di Montepulciano, Bianco Vergine della Chiana Valley, the white of the Val d’Arbia, ending with
the notable Vin Santo (Italian dessert wine) and grappa (pomace brandy) obtained by distilling
the pomace of the great wines mentioned above.
FOLKLORE
Who hasn’t heard of the Palio of Siena (2 July and 16 August), the compelling horse race contested in the Piazza del Campo? The following are some of the event highlights in the province
of Siena: the Sagra del Tordo (Festival of the Thrush) in Montalcino (last Sunday in October), the
truffle show in San Giovanni d’Asso (mid November), the Grape Festival in Chiusi (last Sunday
in August), the Chestnut Festival in Campiglia d’Orcia, Gaiolese September (Gaiole in Chianti,
second Sunday in September), the Mushroom Festival in Vivo d’Orcia (last Sunday in October)
of the Bravio delle Botti (Barrel-rolling race) in Montepulciano (August).
With a half million members, Coldiretti is the leading farmers’ organisation at a national as
well as European level. Currently chaired by Sergio Marini, Coldiretti is strongly rooted in the
territory, with 19 regional federations, 97 provincial and interprovincial federations, as well
as 724 district offices and 5668 local chapters with more than twenty thousand local leaders
representing the majority of Italian agricultural enterprises.
The local presence is accompanied by increasing representation and Coldiretti boasts 69
percent of agricultural enterprises registered with the Chamber of Commerce that in turn
are associated with organisations that develop the majority of arable land under cultivation,
have the highest animal stock production and yield the greater part of the agricultural GDP.
Coldiretti is a social force that both represents and develops agriculture as an economic,
human and environmental resource, with the aim of providing business opportunities for
agricultural development and revenue within the framework of full integrating agriculture
with the economic, environmental and social interests of the country.
Terranostra is a national association, divided into 18 regional associations and 96 provincial
associations.
Launched by Coldiretti in 1973 to provide assistance to agritourism enterprises, Terranostra
is recognised by the Ministry of the Environment as an Environmental Conservation Association. Terranostra promotes and supports the development of agritourism ventures and
rural areas through initiatives and activities inspired by environmental conservation and the
preservation of the territory’s considerable agricultural and landscape heritage, with the aim
of creating better relations between man and environment, agriculture and tourism, farmers
and consumers and the rural and urban world.
Terranostra promotes and carries out studies and projects endorsing the conservation and
proper use of the natural heritage, including forestry, landscape and wildlife.
Terranostra sustains the development of agriculture through promotion of and assistance
to agricultural enterprises with agritourism ventures in providing local food and beverage
products and specialties, organised recreation including cultural, educational, sporting and
wildlife activities and supporting the processing and direct sale of farm produce.
Terranostra advances and provides agricultural methods, technologies and production techniques that ensure a low environmental impact, promoting cultural exchange between rural
and urban areas including the organisation of cultural events, activities and facilities to sell
local farm produce.
With the intent to offer enterprises involved in agritourism opportunities to gain visibility and
prestige and to make known its agricultural reality in the world Terranostra Siena, together
with Coldiretti Siena, organised this educational tour for journalists coming from North America and Europe, all in perfect harmony with theslogan that characterises the association:
“Genuine farmhouse by genuine farmers”.

8. Enhancement of brand products IGP, IGT, DOP, BIO, DOC, DOCG;
9. Membership in the farms network associated to Terranostra;
10. Security in supplying all products from Campagna Amica network; commitment to know
and spread its principles.
Our dear planet Earth is living a very challenging phase of its long life, due to food risks,
pollution, climate change and ecological crisis. Things do not go really better in Italy: from
depleting water supplies to ever bigger wild fires; moreover, we now doubt the quality of our
food, and the fear to loose our local identities. The future of our own county looks weaker and
shorter. As citizens and consumers we have to ask ourselves questions that until few years
ago were not even remotely considered. We even doubt that our future generations will be
able to enjoy the same quality of life that we have experienced in our lifetime.
The goal of our foundation - Campagna Amica - is to find answers to such questions and
doubts. We would like to make possible for families to give to their children and grandchildren the same relationships, quality of food, the enjoyment of nature and beauty of our own
landscapes that we received from our ancestors.
Let’s do it together, holding our hands: consumers, citizens, farmers.

2. To promote the use of food produced locally in our farms;
3. To protect farms, rivers, lakes and natural resources of our territory;
4. To increase the use of renewable energy sources within a framework of respect and
protections of our natural treasures;
5. To create an information network to inform consumers and producers on food, pricing,
and to promote education on food and ecology;
6. To energize public opinion, to be involved and knowledgeable on its rights for good food
and safe environment. To make citizens growth with their territory.
