I am a proud Melbournian and have loved this city’s varied
architecture since I was young, and care very much for the
conservation of this special city. I do seem to be drawn to
the top of Bourke Street a lot these days. I always love seeing
what’s on display at American Tailors and Madam Virtue.
And the wrapping paper at the Paperback Bookshop is one
of this city’s greatest best kept secrets. There is a charming
scale to this end of town with mostly Victorian buildings
juxtaposed with the mid-century modernism of Pellegrini’s.

Since Instagram has come on the

it with the world through the world

of the elements to Melbourne that

the city is full of endless discoveries!

Currently, I can’t stop admiring the
pure mid-century modern lines of

Also, the art deco period is still my
favourite. Whether it’s the Capitol

something about that era that

What can change with a hotel in five
years? Apparently lots. And yet, there
remains too some things that never
change. As far as stories of hotels go,
there could only be one property in all
of Hong Kong that truly captures the
romance of the Orient. And that’s The
Peninsula.
With all its glamour and sumptuous
service, it’s easy to forget that the
hotel was built in 1928 and had,
during World War II, become the
headquarters for the Japanese. Today,
the hotel will transform any visit to
Hong Kong – enveloping the guest in
the grandeur of yesteryear yet fully
ensconced in next generation intuitive
hospitality.
From the moment you arrive, The
Peninsula is there to create magic.

always knew how we preferred our eggs.
We’re not sure how this was so, but The
Verandah soon became our favourite
part of the hotel, thanks to the insanely
generous breakfast spread that had the
most delicate onsen tomago we’ve ever
tasted.
So back to that Chocolate Room.
This latest addition to the hotel, with
its colourful glazed mosaic tiles, is a
narrow strip in the back kitchen and
the epicentre for all of the hotel’s
chocolate creations. Off limits to guests,
we were given the privilege to enter
and meet Maître Chocolatier, Marijn
Coertjenshaute, who creates exquisite
chocolate butterfly centrepieces and
everyday bon bon indulgences (think
lemon and basil, caramel with sea
salt and heartwarming apple pie).
Thankfully, guests can purchase them at
the Peninsula Boutique.
The Chocolate Room was not the only
thing we adored. The Peninsula has long
been known for pioneering the next
generation of in-room technology.
A recent refurbishment now has at least
three nifty tablets in every room that lets
you work on everything. From controlling
all room functions to calling for in-room
dining and whatever else tickles your
fancy, it’s the one gadget that rules them
all. Oh, and did we mention you can also
make free international calls with its
wireless VOIP phone? Yes. Perhaps next
they could think of video calls – since
the views from our room were simply too
amazing not to share.
Yet, amid all these refinement, The
Peninsula never forgets age-old traditions
that have defined them. Case in point:
the legendary afternoon tea. Still hosted

in the colossal lobby as it had over
80 years ago, the English afternoon
tea remains popular for many
reasons. There remains the sense
of ceremony, with its three-tiered
serving plates and silver cutlery. But
in true Peninsula style that gives
everything a slight edge, don’t be
surprised to find the string quartet
cheekily strutting a Star Wars
musical score.
The hotel takes pride of place at the
tip of the Kowloon Peninsula where
shopping is just mere steps away. At
night, the iconic neon lights of Hong
Kong’s busy streets beckon you to
explore the narrow pathways and
hidden corners where you’ll find the
quintessential essence of the island.
The scenes in Kowloon may have
changed over the years, but where
The Peninsula is concerned, service
remains unchanged.

As far as new neighbours go, The Gainsborough
Bath Spa has certainly put the spotlight even
further on the city of Bath. Known for its thermal
waters, gentrified landscape and beautiful period
buildings, The Gainsborough wasted no time in
fitting itself with these themes – and more, giving
the town a sexy new edge.
Foremost in its resume, The Gainsborough has
full bragging rights to its own piping hot thermal
waters. This alone has made the property an easy
nominee for any West England bucket list. In
fact, if you book into one of its Bath Spa Rooms,
you will get in-room access to the centuries-old,
mineral-enriched waters. Talk about wow factor.
That’s not to say other rooms aren’t worth a
stay. Designed by award-winning Champalimaud
Designs, all rooms and suites extol a picture
of genteel English respectability. Space was
further exaggerated with soaring ceilings and
high windows. Minibars are complimentary, with
24-hour room service and a Nespresso machine
to satiate emergency caffeine cravings. There is
a contemporary mix to the interiors, yet subtle

designs remind you of the period buildings it is
housed in – which was once a hospital and then
a college. On a chilly Summer afternoon (this
is England, after all), the bathroom’s underfloor
heating is heaven-sent.
All guests staying at The Gainsborough have
complimentary access to the Bath House at
their award-winning Spa Village. And truly, this
is the star of the property. Set beneath a glass
atrium, amid Romanesque columns and mosaics,
guests are welcome into a bath circuit that takes
them past two natural thermal pools of varying
temperatures, traditional and infrared saunas, a
steam room and an ice alcove. Guests cool down
with endless supply of bottled water, but we
especially like the hot chocolate machine, spiced
up with cardamoms and other spices, drunk in
tiny paper cups. The recipe is kept as close to as
possible as when the Georgians drank it.
The thermal pools have various jets for
massaging the body. You can swim in the pool,
whose original 47°C waters have been reduced
to body temperature, and still have a calming
and luxurious experience. But, it’s the private

A hypnotic combination of gentle dance,

the body pliable like no other conventional

gentle therapist’s maneuvering, you’ll come
out of the session energised, de-stressed and
ready to roll on the bed.
Beyond the spa, The Gainsborough is led
by a brilliant team who are all warm and
accommodating. The cosy and intimate Art
Deco-style restaurant and lounge only seem
to emphasise this ethos. The restaurant
partners one of Germany’s Michelin-starred
chef, Johann Lafer, who lends his name and
culinary philosophy of Dining Without Borders
to highlight locally-sourced products with the
best of Asian flavours for an innovative menu.

Start the day with a light, healthy
breakfast at The Archive, beautifully
situated within the leafy surrounds
of Safa Park. Then make your way to
one of Dubai’s manmade wonders,
Palm Jumeirah, from where your
helicopter sightseeing tour with
Alpha Tours lifts off. It’s the perfect way to get your bearings,
take in all the different Dubai icons and truly appreciate the
scale of the city’s engineering and architectural marvels.
Back on terra firma, you’ll no doubt have built up an
appetite, so head over to the popular Bikers Café on
Jumeirah Beach Road. This casual American-style diner
serves classic Emirati dishes as well as delicious signature
burgers – and don’t worry, non-bikers are more than
welcome. Refuelled, you’ll be ready for the afternoon’s
adrenaline-packed activity as you try the latest sport to
have taken the city by storm, namely flyboarding. SeaRide
Dubai, located at Jumeirah Fishing Harbour, will show you
how it’s done before you strap yourself in and let the jets of
water propel you up to ten metres into the air.
After all the excitement, you’ll enjoy the peace and quiet
afforded by a sunset workout session on the Madinat
Jumeirah beach overlooking Burj Al Arab hotel. After which
it’s time for dinner at nearby Al Marhabani Restaurant,
where you can tuck into the traditional Yemeni dish of
mandi, made from rice, tender lamb and a mixture of spices,
all cooked in a clay oven.

Enjoy an ‘eggciting’ breakfast at popular
Karama haunt Raju Omlet, a casual, laidback
eatery that does delicious things with the
humble egg. Spend the morning exploring
the Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood,
home to your first stop, Dubai Museum,
whose exhibits and dioramas shed light
on life in the city before the skyscrapers went up. To help you
get acquainted with the area, you can sign up for the National
Geographic Walking Tour or opt for a two-wheeled journey
through Old Dubai courtesy of Fishtail Rides, who will provide
you with an eco-friendly single-speed bicycle. Don’t miss the
opportunity to drop by the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for
Cultural Understanding, where your local hosts will answer all
your questions about UAE culture, customs and religion.
For lunch, drop by Rajdhani Restaurant in nearby Bur Dubai,
specialising in authentic Indian thali meals, or enjoy tasty
vegetarian fare while relaxing in the tree-filled courtyard of
XVA Art Hotel. Afterwards, head across the Creek to Deira in a
wooden abra (the short journey will cost you a bargain AED1),
and make your way to the Spice Souk and Gold Souk, where you
can perfect your haggling skills.
Having hopefully picked up a bargain or two, your second day in
Dubai draws to a sumptuous close at Khan Murjan in the heart
of Wafi Mall’s underground souk. The restaurant is designed to
resemble a Damascene courtyard and serves the finest cuisine
from across Arabia.

hot air balloon ride. Don’t forget your
camera as you watch the colours
slowly fill the golden landscape – it’s an experience that will

Next, make your way to Bab Al Shams Desert Resort & Spa,
a luxurious oasis in the desert. Grab a bite to eat and then
get ready to discover the ancient practice of falconry, an
important, enduring tradition that uses trained falcons to
hunt prey. Afterwards, on your way back into town, stop
off at Al Sahra Desert Resort Equestrian Centre to enjoy
a leisurely camel ride over the dunes – there’s even the
opportunity to sample camel milk.
In the afternoon, drop by funky eatery Zaroob on Sheikh

traditional street food vendors of the Levant region and
serves award-winning cuisine. Staying in the Downtown
region – and in stark contrast to the first half of the day –

Your final day in Dubai begins
with a bite to eat at buzzing

from across the region and beyond.
If all that art has made you hungry, head over to café-deli
Omnia Gourmet in Jumeirah on the other side of Sheikh

The perfect ending to the perfect day takes the form of

The Hajj draws millions of worshippers each year.
Hajj, the fifth and last pillar of Islam, is a duty upon
every Muslim once in their lifetime, only if they are
able – both physically and financially. Like Muslims
everywhere, Bruneians consider this journey the most
significant manifestation of their faith. Financial ability
is given emphasis as a Muslim’s foremost responsibility
is the caring of the family. Anyone leaving for Hajj has
to ensure that the family they leave behind would be
left with sufficient means in their absence.
Unlike the Umrah, the minor pilgrimage, Hajj is
performed during a five-day period from the ninth
through 13th of Zulhijjah, the 12th month of the
Muslim lunar calendar (Hajj this year will fall on 9-14
September, 2016 corresponding with the Muslim lunar
calendar). During those five days, pilgrims gather
in Makkah to perform specific rituals, unchanged
since the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him)
undertook his Hajj over 1,400 years ago. Imagine this:
Muslims from around the world who speak different
languages and come from varied backgrounds are
united in the same rituals and perform them as one.
White is not necessarily the colour made obligatory for
all performing their Hajj to wear. But perhaps because
it denotes purity, or that it’s symbolic of a person’s
intentions to start life on a clean slate. After all, Hajj
is the spiritual highlight of a Muslim’s life. During Hajj
season, Brunei’s airport turns busy with pilgrims and
their families as they are sent off.
The scene changes little at every Hajj season.
The Government of Saudi Arabia today sets quotas for
the number of citizens from each country who can go
for Hajj every year (400 for Brunei). This is to ensure
safer conditions for pilgrims, for during Hajj season,
there could be approximately 2 million worshippers
entering Makkah alone. It is due to this quota system
that, when a Bruneian discovers that he or she is
shortlisted for Hajj, the decision is received with much
blessing and thankfulness.
The pilgrims would soon board specially chartered
flights bound for Jeddah. From there, they will be
processed and await their turn to be bussed over to
Madina. The waiting at the special Hajj terminal can
be tiring – anywhere between one to 12 hours. But for
many pilgrims who arrive here from around the world,
the waiting is only a test of their patience; a minor jihad
(struggle) upon oneself as the Guest of Allah, a term
bestowed upon those who make the pilgirmage.

with His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin
Waddaulah, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam,

at Istana Nurul Iman. It has been a tradition for His Majesty to
present the pilgrims with a kurnia (personal gift), the Hajj cloth
sheets for the males, prayer attire for the females and offer
parting advice to the pilgrims.
As for the term “Guest of Allah”, it is reported in an authentic
saying (hadith) of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him)
by Ibn Umar: “The one who fights for the sake of Allah and the
pilgrim who goes for Hajj or Umrah are all guests of Allah.
He called them and they responded; they ask of Him and
He will give them.” (Ibn Maajah, 2893)
As every Bruneian descends upon Makkah, they will be chanting:
Labbaikallahumma Labbaik
Labbaika La Syarika laka Labbaik
Innal hamda wanni’mata
Laka wal mulk La syarika lak
Here I am at your service, O Allah, here I am

Pakaian berwarna putih untuk menunaikan fardhu Haji tidak
merupakan perkara wajib. Mungkin warna ini menjadi pilihan
kerana ia melambangkan kesucian, ataupun kerana warna putih
begitu simbolik memulakan hidup baru seseorang. Pastinya,
Berjuta Muslim menunaikan fardhu Haji setiap tahun. Haji,
rukun Islam kelima dan terakhir, adalah tanggungjawab wajib
setiap Muslim yang perlu dijalankan sekurang-kurangnya sekali
dalam hidup mereka jika berkemampuan secara fizikal dan
kewangan. Seperti umat Islam lain, warga Brunei menganggap
tanggungjawab ini sebagai manifestasi keimanan mereka
yang paling penting. Kemampuan dari segi kewangan diberi
keutamaan kerana tanggungjawab paling utama setiap Muslim

9-14 September, 2016).
jemaahnya menunaikan fardhu Haji setiap tahun
(400 orang bagi Negara Brunei Darussalam). Ini untuk
memastikan keselamatan jemaah kerana sejumlah 2 juta
Muslim akan berada di Mekah dalam satu masa. Disebabkan
sistem kuota inilah warga Brunei amat bersyukur apabila
mendapat berita bahawa nama mereka terpilih untuk
menunaikan fardhu Haji.

Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, Sultan dan

untuk para jemaah Haji.

nescaya diperkenankan. Dan apabila mereka memohon keampunanNya, nescaya diampunkan.” (Ibn Maajah, 2893)
Ketika tiba di Mekah, setiap jemaah Haji dari Brunei akan
mengucapkan kalimah berikut:

Ku sambut seruan-Mu Ya Allah, Ku sambut seruan-Mu
Ku sambut seruan-Mu, tiada sekutu bagi-Mu, Ku sambut seruan-Mu
Sesungguhnya segala puji, nikmat dan kekuasaan adalah milik-Mu
Tiada sekutu bagi-Mu
Kami mendoakan Haji yang mabrur buat semua jemaah Haji kali ini.
Amin.

The all-new Pajero Sport is the third-generation mid-size
SUV developed to a “stylish and comfortable off-road SUV”
concept. Inheriting the best of the Pajero brand, the Pajero
Sport brings with it a refined and high-quality exterior design,
high-quality vehicle performance and a comfortable interior
on par with the best in its class, and a comprehensive
advanced safety feature set to give you a peace of mind.
At its core is the 2.4L MIVEC turbo diesel engine. Mated to a
new 8-speed automatic transmission (first for a Mitsubishi
model) developed to complement the all-new Pajero Sport,
power is sent to all four wheels via a Super-Select 4WD-II
four-wheel drive system with a new Off-road Mode and Hill
Descent Control. With all of this in play, you get nothing
but the best whether on or off-road. Highlights of its
performance include Super-Select 4WD-II four-wheel drive
system with a new Off-road Mode, 178 horsepower with
430 Nm torque and an 8-speed automatic transmission
with paddle shifters.
The Pajero Sport is also the second model to feature
Mitsubishi’s “Dynamic Shield” front end, with the first being
the Outlander, which was launched earlier this year. It
features a stylish design with accents made of chrome in
the front fascia, sleek headlamps with LED daytime running
lights, and a new bumper design. At the back, it features a
striking pair of vertically-oriented tail light clusters and a
re-designed lift gate. LED Headlamps and Daytime Running
Lights, Side Mirror Signal lights, 18” alloy wheels (GLS
model) and Fog lights all add to the stylish upgrade.

fine-tuned to enhance driving pleasure and keep you in
confident control. Bluetooth connectivity, engine push start
button, driver power seat and leather seats are some of the
new interior features to look forward to.
Elsewhere, sophisticated new safety features intelligently
support safer driving whether you are parking or cruising on
the highway. You can drive with greater confidence knowing
that all occupants are solidly protected by a robust RISE
(Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution) body and comprehensive
safety measures. There are seven Airbags, Blind Spot Detection,
Rain Sensor and Reverse Camera.

For your safety and comfort, you may store
your hand luggage in the overhead lockers

Liquids, Aerosols and Gels (LAG)
Various countries have implemented
restrictions on the carriage of liquids,
aerosols and gels in compliance with new
guidelines set by the International Civil

These restrictions may affect your ability to

Customers are advised to check with duty free
personnel before making their purchases. All
liquids, aerosols and gels must be carried in
containers of no greater than 100ml/3.3oz
capacity (approximately 100gm in weight)
and placed in a transparent, resealable plastic
bag. The plastic bag must be removed from

Exceptions to the new regulations are

need may be required.
Use of Electronic Equipment
Electronic devices such as Citizen’s band (CB)
radio, remote-controlled devices (such as

Duty-free Allowance* The import of
the following products is subject to
restrictions imposed by Brunei’s Customs
and Excise Department.
Cigarettes: Passengers will be charged duty
on cigarettes of $0.25 tax per stick, equal
to $5 per pack of 20 sticks of cigarette,
and $50 for one carton of 10 packs.
Other tobacco products - Import duty on
other tobacco products has increased
significantly. Passengers will be charged
duty for the import of tobacco products.
Alcohol: Non-Muslim passengers may
bring in two bottles of liquor plus 12 cans
of beer for personal consumption only;
and a reasonable quantity of perfumes.
Transportation The airport is about 11km
from the capital. Taxis, car rentals and
buses are available.
Currency The Brunei dollar is on a
par with the Singapore dollar, which is
also accepted in Brunei. Banks, hotels
and many department stores will cash
traveller’s cheques.
Language Malay is the official language
but English is widely used. Other languages
include Chinese and its dialect variants and
other indigenous dialects. Although the
official religion is Islam, other faiths including
Christianity and Buddhism are practised.
Clothing Light clothing is advisable as
the climate is generally warm and humid.
Women are requested to dress modestly
in keeping with local customs.
* The visa and duty-free allowances are provided as a guideline and may change without notice.
Health Doctors provide private medical
services for a nominal charge. There are a
number of state health clinics and hospitals.
Credit Cards Hotels, department stores and
other major establishments generally accept
all internationally known credit cards.
Tipping Optional. Some hotels add a 10
per cent service charge to their room rates.
Telephones Overseas calls can be made
from hotel rooms through the operator,
or via international direct dialling (IDD).
There are also coin and phonecard
operated public telephones.
Utilities Power supply is 220 - 240v,
50 cycles. The PAL and NTSC systems
are used by local television. Tap water
is generally safe to drink although some
take the precaution of boiling it.
Media Radio Television Brunei has nightly
news bulletins and a range of popular
entertainment in both English and Malay.
Cable network and Malaysian television
programmes can also be received. There
are three local daily newspapers namely:
Borneo Bulletin (English), The Brunei
Times (English) and Media Permata
(Malay). Other regional and international
publications are also available at newstands.
Food For the adventurous, the food
stalls offer Malay favourites, such as
satay (barbecued meat on a skewer)
and local dishes prepared with curry or
coconut milk. Chinese, European and
Indian cuisines are also available. All F&B
businesses, including hotel restaurants,
close for Friday prayer 12pm to 2pm.
For hotel guests, room service dining
operates as usual.
Hotels Accommodation in the capital
ranges from international standard to
middle range hotels. Service apartments
are also available at reasonable rates.
Shopping Department stores and shops
offer goods ranging from cosmetics and
stereos to local handicrafts such as the
keris (an ornamental dagger), miniature
brass cannons, and kain tenunan, a cloth
woven with gold or silver threads.
Festivals and Celebrations National Day,
23 February, Hari Raya, the end of the
Muslim fasting month, and His Majesty
The Sultan’s birthday, 15 July. Other public
holidays include Chinese Lunar New Year
and Christmas.
Customs and Courtesy
• In mosques, visitors should remove their
shoes and should not pass in front of
people at prayer. A woman should ensure
that her head, knees and arms are covered
before entering mosques. Robes are
provided at the entrance to the mosque.
• A Bruneian shakes hands lightly and
brings his hands to his chest. Members
of the opposite sex do not shake hands.
• It is impolite to point with the index
finger (use the right thumb instead) or
to beckon someone with fingers and
palm facing upwards. Instead the whole
hand should be waved with palm facing
downwards. The right fist should never
be smacked into the left palm.
• Gifts, particularly food, are passed with
the right hand.

WELCOME ONBOARD
CAPITAL ATTRACTIONS
ABODE OF PEACE
Small in size but big in attractions,
Brunei’s capital has lots to offer.
Brunei Darussalam is a country rich in culture and heritage.
It is a small, peaceful, prosperous kingdom on the northern
shore of the ecologically-rich island of Borneo. Come and
discover Brunei, a Kingdom of Unexpected Treasures.
Brunei is arguably best known today as an oil
producing country. The nation became independent
in 1984 and, thanks to its large reserves of oil and gas,
now has one of the highest standards of living in the
world. Its population of just over 408,000 is made
up of two-thirds ethnic Malay, with the remainder
being Chinese, Indian and other indigenous groups.
The Sultanate has four districts: Brunei-Muara
(which includes the capital Bandar Seri Begawan),
Temburong, Tutong and Belait. ‘Darussalam’, the
Arabic word for ‘Abode of Peace’ describes Brunei’s
Islamic history that dates back some 1,500 years.
Today, Brunei remains the world’s only Malay Islamic
Monarchy with an unbroken royal lineage that has
ruled the nation for the past 600 years.

Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin
Waddaulah, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of
Brunei Darussalam. Although not open to
public, except during Hari Raya Aidil Fitri,
its golden domes and vaulted roof can be
viewed from Kampong Ayer.
LAPAU AND DEWAN MAJLIS
The Royal Ceremonial Hall features an
exquisite golden dome and hosts all of the
Sultanate’s traditional royal ceremonies.
