Above, Meadowlark's first ever BUG
launch for 3rd grade! CIS is coordinating the program alongside with the Kiwanis Club. 3rd quarter awards ceremony took place on March 24 and many
students brought up their grades.
Right, CIS coordinated
its second annual Eye
Care Fair last fall. Two
wonderful volunteers
from Dr. Kannarr's office
came and evaluated nearly 100 students' eyes and
repaired damaged eye
glasses on the spot!

Communities In Schools brought Reality
U$ to Chanute High School in February,
2016. 111 students received a fun lesson
in one of the joys of adulthood: Balancing
a budget. 20 volunteers took the students
through a bill-filled trip of role playing
their lives ten years in the future. As the
15-16 school year comes to a close, CIS
will be hosting afterschool tutoring events
and a couple college visits as well.
Above, Under-AWearness was a hit! 161
pairs of underwear were
donated!

Social Media & Cyber-Bullying
On March 23, 2016 Pittsburg Middle
School presented on social media safety
and cyber-bullying. Tabitha Reavis,
with the Child Advocacy Center, came
to speak to a group of 7th grade girls
about the topics. The CAC paid the $99
fee to access the online training. The
group were Guinea pigs to see if this
was something we wanted to pursue for
a school wide assembly.
Pictured left, Site Coordinator, Angie VanLeeuwen, and Assistant Principal, Jim
Goracke, participate in a school-wide fundraiser, which raised approximately
$1800. Way to go, Chanute Elementary School!
Communities In Schools also collaborated with local community organizations to
provide coats to 80 students this past winter! Thank you, Chanute Fire Department, Emprise Bank, Christmas Hands of Help and Hope as well as Cherry Street
Youth Center, for all your help with this project!
Another HUGE „Thank You‟ goes out to Sonic of Chanute, Kansas that has donated 20 free medium slushes to students receiving perfect attendance each quarter. Communities In Schools of Mid-America loves our partnerships!

On December 9th, Pittsburg High School hosted Reality U$
for one half of the Freshmen class. Over one hundred students participated. PHS had over 30 volunteers from the
community work the booths. PHS will host Reality U$
again this semester on May 4th. This date will include the
second half of the Freshmen class. Again 30 volunteers will
be needed. At the Reality U$ event, students will visit a variety of booths to “purchase” housing, transportation,
communication services, child care, food, utilities, insurance, etc. They will also have the opportunity to save money, give to charity and learn about unexpected things that
affect daily life (e.g. accidents, unexpected visitors, flat
tires).

Parsons High School
What an exciting time at Parsons
High School!
We are currently expanding our
clothing closet to include a business
section so that community members
or students can receive the items
they may need to be able to “dress
for success” for job interviews and
such.
CIS is also working on hosting a
Parent Engagement night. During
this event we will have learning stations set-up so that parents can come
in and learn what some of our programs have to offer such as: checkCommunities in Schools at Parsons

During the month of February Communities in Schools combined efforts with
the newly founded Future Business Coalition to form "TIE TUESDAYS". This
event helped students to learn the art of
tying a dress tie. This event was a success and the partnership with the FBC is
very exciting to help in serving the students of Parsons High School.
