Precast Hollow Core Slabs
Fixing Systems for Precast Hollow Core Slabs 2012 / 01 1 Introduction Introduction to Hollow Core Slabs: Hollow Core Slab Fixing Systems Hollow core slabs are a very common material made of precast concrete, steel and composite structures for use in retail, industrial, commercial building and car parks as well as in housing, educational and government projects. Technical Information: Hollow Core Floors are manufactured using a long line casting technique with automatic casting equipment which places high strength, low water/cement ratio concrete under a high degree of vibration and compaction. The section profile incorporates hollow cores to reduce self-weight without significant reduction in section stiffness. Reinforcement is by high tensile prestressing strand or wire which has an ultimate strength of more then 3 times that of conventional high tensile reinforcement. The structural performance resulting from the combination of those featured produces a slab which is highly efficient and economic for any load/span situation. 100 mm thick 1200 mm Nominal width 150 mm thick 200 mm thick 250 mm thick 1200 mm Nominal width 300 mm thick 350 mm thick 400 mm thick 450 mm thick 1200 mm Nominal width fischer fixings UK Ltd Whitely Road Hithercroft Industrial Estate Wallingford Oxfordshire OX10 9AT 6 January 2012 Testing of Fischer Fixings in Bison Hollow Core Slabs We confirm that the tests as detailed in your document title “Fixings Testing on Bison Hollow Core Slabs”, were carried out in our laboratory. The tests were carried out on the soffit of a standard 150 mm deep slab, and the results are a true record of the tests. Therefore, we can recommend that the fixings described are suitable for use with hollow core slabs, up to the safe working loads stated. FDA-R Drop in anchor Description Description The fischer Hollow Ceiling Slab anchor FHY has been developed specially for fastenings in hollow core slabs of prestressed concrete. It is designed for use with standard bolts or threaded rods with metric threads from M6 to M10. The FHY is installed flush with the concrete surface. When the bolt or the nut is tightened a tapered element is pulled into the sleeve, which presses this outwards. In this way, the FHY presses against the sides of the hole, creating a friction fit. If the anchor encounters a cavity during installation, the expansion of the sleeve forms a Y shape. The holding power is now the result of a combination of expansion pressure and formfit. The FHY offers considerable scope in the location of attachment points. Unlike other competing products, it does not have to be located at the centre of the cavity axis, which is often very difficult to define. Instead, it can be located down to a minimum distance of 50 mm from the pre-stressing steel. The FDA-R is a drop in anchor with a rim so that the anchor remains flush with the surface of the substrate at all times. As the anchor retains its position item that has been attached to the substrate can be removed and refitted several times with no effect. The drill hole can be a slightly deeper depth without effecting the anchor’s performance. This anchor is suitable for use with all types of screws and studs with a metric thread. Building Materials Suitability Concrete ≥ B15 and dense natural stone plus hollow core slabs. The lower turns of the thread also have a serrated edge. The diameter of the hole and the thread of the screw are adapted so that the serrated thread of the screw cuts into the concrete. The thread turns creating a fine undercut, ensuring that the load is safely supported by a perfect form fit. The teeth allow the thread to cut into the concrete, thereby reducing the amount of energy required to insert the screw into its position. The frame fixing screw, type FFS provides stress free standoff installations without the use of additional plugs. The continuous thread ensures that the fixture cannot be pulled up against the building material. Distortion of the profile will therefore not take place, either during or after installation (for instance when applying insulating foam). The distance is also maintained when loads are subsequently applied. The long screw length make exact positioning easy. Approvals Building Materials Concrete ≥ B15 and masonry building materials. It form locks in solid the substrates which guarantees maximum load bearing capabilities. The area of application ranges from solid materials through to perforated materials. The screw tolerance range allows the safe use of different screw types and diameters, especially for chipboard screws and the fischer ASL universal spacer screws. A conical expansion fixing of glassfibre reinforced nylon and brass taper for universal installation with machine screws and threaded bolts. Designed for a high degree of expansion, the fixing is not sensitive to inaccuracies in drilled holes or material tolerances. The fixing is also ideal for fastenings in thin concrete, artificial stone and other pressure-resistant flat material. Suitability Building Materials Suitability ▪ For practically all concrete and masonry materials, ranging from perforated bricks to hollow blocks and aircrete (aerated concrete). ▪ For wood and chipboard screws between 2 and 12 mm. ▪ For all objects which can be fixed with wood and chipboard screws, e.g. wall mounted shelves, light wall cupboards, curtain rails, light coat racks, skirting, light brackets, electric switches, cable ducts, cable clips, lamps, towel rails, mirrors, mirror cabinets, soap dishes, picture frames, wallmounted clocks, hanging baskets, letter boxes & washing lines etc. Concrete, natural stone, solid bricks, solid gypsum panels, vertical perforated bricks, sandlime hollow bricks, hollow bricks, aircrete. ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ Building Materials Concrete, prestressed hollow-core concrete slabs, Natural stone with a dense structure, Solid brick, solid sand-lime brick, Solid block made from lightweight concrete, aircrete, solid panel made from gypsum, vertically perforated brick, perforated sandlime block, hollow block made from lightweight concrete, slabs made of perforated bricks, hollow concrete blocks etc. Installation Installation instructions: In less pressure resistant materials and perforated brick, the tightening torque should be adapted to the material. The tested slabs have a concrete web thickness of 25 mm and a minimum compressive strength of 55N/mm2. These results are tabulated below starting with the highest performing anchor at the top. The test results for all of the fixing tested offers good variation in ultimate loads. This allows the Engineer/Architect/End user to have a broad range of anchors to choose from depending on both function or load performance. Axial spacings vary from anchor to anchor due to the expansion or form-locking characteristics. In our opinion it would be suitable to have axial spacing >200 mm for all the anchors tested except the FIS V 360 S and FFS screw. The axial spacing for the FIS V 360 S as written above are conservative, for more detailed, comprehensive and possibly smaller spacing further testing should be carried out. Note: The FIS V 360 S resin with FIS H N net achieved a very large concrete cone failure during testing. This cone is larger than the characteristic cone failure expected in standard reinforced concrete due to the compressive stress patterns that the pre-stressing induces.
