TATA GROUP
TATA STEEL
As India’s largest conglomerate, the Tata
group has 32 publicly-listed companies
with a combined market capitalisation
of $128.8 billion (as on April 23, 2015),
and a shareholder base of 3.9 million.
Over the years, Tata Steel has enriched the legacy
handed over by its founder J.N. Tata, by placing
equal emphasis on stakeholder value creation
and corporate citizenship.
The Tata Steel Group is well known in the 26
countries in which we operate and employs 80,000
people across 5 continents. Established in 1907,
in the city that is now known as Jamshedpur,
Tata Steel is now among the top ten global steel
companies with an annual crude steel capacity of
nearly 30 million tonnes per annum. It is now the
world’s second-most geographically-diversified steel
producer that comprises of some of the world’s most
pioneering and respected entities - the Tata group
itself, British Steel, Koninklijke Hoogovens
and NatSteel.

Ratan Tata (standing) and Dorab Tata (right) who formed the
nucleus of the Tata Group during Jamsetji’s lifetime.
South East Asia
Tata Steel is the second largest steel producer in
Europe with a diversified presence across the
continent. Our European crude steel production is
more than two thirds of the group’s total capacity –
with major steelmaking centres at three locations in
the UK and in IJmuiden in the Netherlands. IJmuiden
is currently the group’s largest single steel plant with
a crude steel production capacity of 7.6 mtpa.
Operations
The Tata group comprises of over 100
operating companies in seven business sectors:
communications and information technology,
engineering, materials, services, energy, consumer
products and chemicals.
The group has operations in more than 100 countries
across six continents and its companies export
products and services to 150 countries.
Some of Tata Group’s largest companies include:
•• Tata Motors – now among the top five commercial
vehicle manufacturers in the world and the owner
of Jaguar Land Rover
•• TCS – one of the world’s leading
software companies
•• Tata Tea – the second largest branded tea company
in the world through its UK-based subsidiary Tetley
•• Tata Chemicals – the world’s second largest
manufacturer of soda ash
•• Tata Communications – one of the world’s largest
wholesale voice carriers.

The Jamshedpur works is currently comprised of
a 9.7 mtpa crude steel production facility and a
variety of finishing mills. Mines and collieries in
India give the company a distinct advantage in raw
material sourcing. Looking further into the future,
the company plans to continue to increase its
capacity significantly; for example, with the addition
of a further 6 mtpa by the end of 2015 with the
completion of the Odisha project. This greenfield
facility will comprise of major facilities like the Sinter
Plant, Pellet Plant, Coke Plant, Blast Furnace, Steel
Melt Shop, Hot Strip Mill, Cold Rolling Mill and Raw
Material Handling units.

Pioneers in Steel About Speciality Steels
A WORLD LEADER IN
SPECIALITY STEELS
Our strength lies in our integrated production capability which
includes electric arc Steelmaking, vacuum induction melting, mill
processing capabilities and service centres. We are able to supply
ingots, blooms, billets, bars and narrow strip in the as-cast, rolled,
drawn, peeled, heat treated or remelted condition, in quantities
as demanded by our customer base.
To complement our production capabilities; over
100 component and equipment manufacturers,
end users, third parties and National bodies have
validated our quality management systems. Our
UK based facilities cover the entire manufacturing
process from the initial melting of recycled scrap,
through rolling, to inspection and despatch of the
final product (see pages 22-23).
Steelmaking and Sheffield have a long, historic
association, but we recognize that to keep at the
forefront of steel technology and its ever more
demanding uses, we must continue to invest in our
people and in new technology. Continually training
our workforce and recent investments of more than
£20 million in two additional Vacuum Arc Remelting
(VAR) furnaces, a Vacuum Induction Melting (VIM)
facility, an advanced machining centre and a new
distribution centre in India can be seen as part of an
ongoing cycle of investment that goes back to the
original steelmasters of Sheffield.
This continued investment in people and processes
is in tune with our heritage and core to the culture of
Tata Steel.
In conjunction with our primary production
capabilities, our service centres around the globe
offer the ability to service our customer’s supply
chains with bespoke combinations of added value
processing and just-in-time delivery. Additionally, our
worldwide network of Tata Steel offices means that
wherever you are in the world, you can be sure you

Pioneers in Steel Steel for the Oil and Gas Industry
THE OIL AND
GAS INDUSTRY
Our steel explores
the world
Within the Oil and Gas sector we produce the widest single range of
steel types ranging from basic CrMo products such as AISI 4140, through
more capable NiCrMo grades such as AISI 4330V to corrosion resistant
stainless steel such as SF 13/2/5. In addition at the request of the industry
we are bringing to market bespoke high performance grades such as the
recently introduced HyPer30 and HyPer45 steel types. This wide range of
grades is backed by unparalleled levels of OEM and customer approvals.
Lowering the Total Cost
of Production
By using a combination of our own internal and
quality external heat treatment resources we can
produce our steels with the widest possible range
of mechanical properties. We can then deliver
globally to support our customers supply chains.
Our steels can be used throughout the oil and gas
extraction industry for components where strength,
toughness and resistance to fatigue and corrosion are
paramount. This gives you consistency and reliability
in operation to help you reduce your total costs.

Pioneers in Steel Our Beliefs in Sustainability
SUSTAINABILITY
Sustainability drives everything we do. To us, this is about addressing
the challenges we all face today, it is about how we can ensure a
high quality of life for all, both now and for generations to come.
This means we need to balance economic prosperity and social
equality with looking after the one planet on which we live.
A pioneer in adopting sustainability as a policy, Tata Steel is guided by the
approach that wealth created must be continuously returned to society.
The responsibility of combining the three elements of society - social,
environmental and economic – is of utmost importance to the way of life
at Tata Steel. It is the combination of these three elements that ensures that
business is sustainable for all stakeholders.
We are committed to the design of more sustainable products that contribute
to solutions, which are lighter, last longer and use fewer resources to produce.
Our steel goes into the world’s most sustainable buildings and transport
infrastructure, and supports the performance of the most efficient vehicles
on the market. Steel is the only material with a truly closed recycling loop. Steel is
not consumed, it is used again and again without any loss of quality or strength.
Steel is a uniquely sustainable material because once it’s made; it can be used as
steel, forever.
We are proud to be a member of ULCOS (Ultra-Low CO2 Steelmaking), a
pioneering partnership of 48 European organisations committed to reducing
the CO2 emissions of steel production by 50% by 2050. Above all we operate in
a way that is safe for our people and respectful to the environment. We behave
responsibly and with care towards the communities surrounding and impacted
by our operations.
Balancing economic prosperity, environmental responsibility and societal benefit,
Tata Steel Europe aims to address the bigger global challenges primarily through
its advanced steel products and efficient production processes. It is the steel
products that reach out to millions of end users and the use of these create a
wider impact from the sustainability perspective. As a good corporate citizen,
the company believes in investing in Research & Development for technologies
to produce steel that has less impact on the environment and processes that are
more resource efficient.
