A Note from the President BY MATT RIDGE, CLARINDA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE PRESIDENT Social media's evolution over the past 10 years has been viewed as everything from a young person novelty to an indispensible facet of 21st century communication. During the early stages of social media acceptance as a viable communication tool, many less technically savvy individuals were left on the side of the new digital road. The reasons for this varied from perceived complexity, lack of technical know-how, or more commonly, the failure to recognize and capitalize on emerging trends. There was a similar progression with the utilization of the World Wide Web for delivering information. The same concerns and issues which arose during the rush to create web pages for internet presence are the same for enhancing visibility in the social media era. To some degree, businesses and other entities have been burnt out on keeping up with these transitions. Internet providers, web hosting, web page developers, IT departments and personnel had all been issues preventing adoption of early internet communication. These and now having to allocate time and resources to a new, unfamiliar area have also prevented social media from empowering entities that it could help. Fortunately, this time around, there have been a number of aids that exist to help develop and manage social media for businesses and other groups. However, a large number of potential users are still on the sidelines for the same reasons that existed 20 years ago. Also, while many groups and businesses currently have a social media presence, some may not know the trending significance of social media that has progressed from buzzword to exposure necessity. The following list is to encourage both groups: * Facebook is the most visited of all websites * 70% of the U.S. population has at least one social media account * 60% of social media users are more likely to purchase from a business they follow online * 50% of shoppers have made a purchase based on a social media recommendation * The fastest growing age bracket for social media users is the 60+ demographic * 90% of the 18-29 age group use social media * 33% of millennials say their preferred channel for communicating with businesses is social media * 62% of the U.S. population receives their news and event information from social media sites than elsewhere While there are different ways to measure social media success and outcomes, the metrics and results are all easily available to users. Facebook is now starting to be used as an alternative to Google to search for businesses and events. This usage allows for consumers to get immediate information and reviews through a familiar media mode, and begs for nonprofits, clubs, groups and businesses to get on board. For further information about developing your social media presence, call the Clarinda Chamber of Commerce for starter information – (712) 542-2166. Headquartered out of Pacific Junction, Iowa, AgriVision Equipment currently has over 200 employees, touching more than 25 different counties. AgriVision Equipment is committed to the communities it serves and is always reinvesting in the business. In the last 12 months, AgriVision Equipment has open two updated locations, in Red Oak and Winterset, Iowa. “It is important for our locations to be able to support the equipment our customers need. A lot of times this means building a new building or remodeling a current one to make the location more efficient,” says Don Athen, Owner. At the Clarinda location there are currently 18 employees across the four departments. Here, employees sell, service and support everything from Stihl chainsaws to John Deere combines. It is quite the feat for employees to know so much about such a varied project offering. “Our number one goal at the end of the day is taking care of every customer,” says Mark Smith, store manager. “We know if our customers are happy, then employees will be happy, and the business will continue to grow.” AgriVision Equipment is always looking ahead to be part of the industry leaders. As the agricultural industry changes, AgriVision Equipment plans to be right there with it. IN TH E SPOTLIGHT WEINREICH BBQ Baking has been a bond between the child and mother while BBQing has been a bond between father and son. While baking, you would look at the instructions to follow. BBQing for Tim wasn’t exactly done that way. His father handed all the ingredients to him and said, “Good luck, you can’t mess it up, you can only alter the flavor one way or another.” To a 12-year-old this was big calling. Throughout each BBQ outing, recipes would change and become better while cooking a wider variety of sides or main dishes. Through the years the recipes changed and we expanded to cooking for our friends and family. As we started cooking for our friends there was always one person that challenged us to have a better recipe, which resulted in competitions. So the competitive cooking began and we would have a gathering of friends and family who would be used as judges. Now anyone who competes at events like these knows that there is always an excuse for the results that the losing recipe received, regardless of the score. We did the only thing we knew how to do – make the competition bigger, find legal judges and start BBQing professionally. Thinking that we had the “World’s Greatest” BBQ recipe, in the first tournament we were humbled quickly. However, with anything, you stick with it, you become better and learn from your errors. Tournaments continued and our recipes got better with better scores to prove it. We continued to get better and thought if we can impress licensed judges, then maybe we can impress the community. So in Spring 2015, the Weinreich family started to take BBQing mobile and started catering. Weinreich BBQ offers specialty sandwiches of brisket or pulled pork but do offer chicken, hot dogs and hamburgers with a variety of side dishes such as pasta salad, potato salad, cole slaw, cheesy potatoes, baked beans and chips. Now the Weinreich tradition continues through generations of kids, family and friends. Weinreich BBQ strives to best serve and can be seen serving the community at various businesses, family or community events. Call us at (712)-303-7069 for all your catering needs!
