Chamber Bowling Tournament
The 13th Annual Bowling Tournament at Frontier Lanes was hosted by
the Clarinda Chamber of Commerce Community and Retail Committee
on March 19. The tournament had 22 teams participating across the 2,
5 and 8 p.m. flights. All teams took part in one game each of regular
bowling, 9-pin and glow-in-the-dark 9-pin. Participating bowlers had the
opportunity to keep their energy up with a meal provided by Hy-Vee,
Frontier Lanes and Fareway Stores. Team participants included: McCall
Family, Fine Family, Clarinda Academy, Super 8 Clarinda (2 teams), R &
R Concrete, Bank Iowa (2 teams), Lisle Corporation/EZ Way, Degase
Home Improvement (2 teams), CL Fabrication, Wild Fire Salon & Spa,
Wallin Plumbing, Clarinda Regional Health Center, Farwell Farms, Main
Street Auto Wash, Shore Motor Company (2 teams), NSK Corporation,
Spookyville, and Golden Girls – Frontier Lanes.
This year’s lane sponsors were Bank Iowa, Clarinda Chamber of
Commerce, Clarinda Regional Health Center, Cornerstone Bank, East

Clarinda A’s – 62nd Season
Hits a Home Run

Baseball is in full swing with the colleges in the final weeks of their seasons and
Major League teams just beginning theirs. Clarinda A’s management and board of
directors are gearing up for their 62nd season. The A’s will open the 2016 schedule
with a home game vs. non-league Sioux Falls, SD Wednesday, May 31 & play their
first MINK League game vs. Chillicothe on Friday, June 3
This year the League alignment of the divisions will remain the same with the North
to include Sedalia Bombers, Clarinda A’s, St. Joseph Mustangs, and Chillicothe
Mudcats and the South to have Branson Nationals, Nevada Griffons, Ozark Generals and Joplin Outlaws. The team is scheduled to play a total of 53 games, 29
of them at Clarinda Municipal Stadium/Eberly Field.
Annual Parents’ weekend will be July 2-4. On Saturday the 2nd there will be a
morning golf tournament open to the public - 8:30 Shotgun, 4 person Texas Best
Shot, $200 per team followed by a game with Omaha that evening. To register for

or Brenda Samuelson (712) 542-8892. Sunday, July 3rd’s game will be a free night
sponsored by the Clarinda Academy with fireworks by the Clarinda Volunteer Fire
Department following. The weekend will wrap up on Monday, July 4th with a picnic
for the team, visiting parents, house parents, board and auxiliary members.
Other free nights are Wednesday, June 15 by the Clarinda Chamber of Commerce; Sunday, June 19, Subway and Thursday, June 30 Hy-Vee. Baseball Day will
be held Saturday, June 25. Hy-Vee will be sponsoring the $100 Baseball Toss again
this season and free Baseball Bingo will still be played at each home game.
Clarinda A’s manager Ryan Eberly is excited about the upcoming season: “A few
of last year’s team members will be returning and I feel we have done a good
enough job of recruiting to see us return to the NBC World Series and be very competitive in MINK League play.” Craig Hindman will return for his ninth year as coach
& be joined by former A’s pitcher Kevin Jenkins returning for his second year on the
staff.
Jeff Clark, president of the A’s board of directors, encourages all to come out to
support the A’s this summer: “As most of you know, there is a very family-friendly environment at the ball park and I think you will enjoy the games and all the activities
associated with the A’s. Enjoy the game from the bleachers or bring your lawn chair
and join in the fun.”

WALLIN PLUMBING & HEATING
Thirty years ago, in March 1986, a twenty-four-year-old
man had an idea and made his dream a reality. Greg
Wallin borrowed $7500 from his brother to open a heating,
cooling and plumbing business at 112 West Orange Street.
Times were lean, which meant the building was a business
during the day and a home at night. The budget was tight,
so jeans and shirts were the uniform of choice and the
leaking roof had to wait a few years to be replaced. Evenings
were spent bending tin for duct work jobs. Greg had one
employee along with his Dad (a retired farmer) volunteering
his time to answer the telephone.
Almost ten years later in 1995 the business was outgrowing
its location, so Greg decided to purchase the lot at its current
location on Chestnut Street. A new building was erected that
housed more storage and work area space. More employees were added as business increased and time
passed.
Wanting to expand business and serve more customers, in September 2003 a branch office was opened on
Sheridan Avenue in Shenandoah. In addition to storage and work area, this location houses a plumbing
showroom that includes showers, sinks, toilets and faucet displays.
Both locations offer repair and installation of heating and cooling equipment. We stock a large variety of
furnace filters and repair parts. In addition to repairing leaking pipes, toilets and faucets, we sell and install
sinks, showers, faucets and toilets. Something we added last year was electric fireplaces which add supplemental
heat along with a decorative look to a room.
Through the years there have been many valued employees at the shop as well as an overwhelming number
of cherished customers. Greg and his entire family would like to thank all of Southwest Iowa for the years of
support, trust and faith that it has bestowed on him. What a wonderful county and community we have that a
young man with a big dream and very limited resources can start a business and survive for 30 years and
counting!

The 21st Annual Chamber Golf Tournament is scheduled for Thursday,
May 19 at the Clarinda Country Club. Registration and lunch will begin
at 11 a.m. with a shotgun start at 12 p.m. for each 4-person Texas Best
Ball team. The entry fee per person is $65 and includes lunch, green fees,
a fun pack and a chance at flag and door prizes. Hole sponsorship is
$100 and cart fees are $35. Please contact the Chamber office for team

13 entry deadline.

The Clarinda Fire Department has taken on the responsibility for the
July 3rd fireworks show from the Clarinda A’s program. The show will be
affiliated with the Clarinda A’s baseball game scheduled for Sunday, July
3 at 7 p.m. The Clarinda Fire Department will now be responsible for
ordering the fireworks, raising funds and paying for the entire show. We
are notifying the area businesses of this situation. The Clarinda Fire
Department is now accepting donations for this year’s 2016 show.
Donations can be sent to PCSB Bank or the Clarinda City Hall. This year’s
fireworks show will be double in size from last year and with your help we
can have a great show for the community for years to come.

The Clarinda Ambassadors are extending an invitation for those
