Dear Reader:
New Jersey is one of the safest states in the nation based on traffic movement data and motor
vehicle miles traveled. During the calendar year 2000, there were 655 fatal crashes with 723
fatalities in New Jersey—the fewest number since the New Jersey State Police initiated its motor
vehicle traffic data base. A review of fatal crashes for the first six months of calendar year 2001,
found a decrease of 6.6% from calendar year 2000.
Not withstanding the downward trend, two issues have become areas of concern.
Motorcycle related crashes and deaths were up significantly over the previous year, and the number
of intoxicated drivers in fatal accidents has increased 15%.
The New Jersey State Police takes pride in all of its driver education and traffic enforcement
programs. Our unyielding goal is to reduce the number of people killed and injured as a result of
motor vehicle collisions and promote a general sense of awareness and safety.
The following booklet was compiled by members of the Fatal Accident Investigation Unit
of the New Jersey State Police. It contains motor vehicle traffic accident statistical data for the
calendar year 2000. Working toward the goal of reducing the number of fatal and serious accidents
is paramount and it is my sincerest desire that the number of traffic related deaths continues its
downward trend.
Sincerely,
Carson J. Dunbar, Jr.

LEGEND:
NEGATIVE:
NO TEST:
NOTE:
Had been drinking: includes those delayed deaths where an odor of alcohol was detected. Includes admittance of victim (in delayed death) or statements of witnesses.
Includes lab reports which show a trace and not a percentage, or reading below 0.01%.
Tested and found to be negative.
Because of delayed death, age factor, contamination of samples, and the failure on the part of some investigative agencies and medical examiners to cause a test to be
performed on victims.
Twenty-one drivers, three passengers, six pedestrians, and one pedalcyclist tested positive for drugs. Three drivers tested positive for both alcohol and drugs.
