Creno crowned Queens champion for the second time
2015 Queens champion Jennifer Creno
Jennifer Creno experienced a good kind of tired at the end
of the Syracuse Queens Invitational on Dec. 6.
Creno’s long day began at 5:45 a.m. with a drive back to
Syracuse after a weekend with friends in Lake Placid. Ten
hours later, it ended with her holding a bouquet of roses, a
trophy and the Queens tiara on her head.
The top-seeded Creno defeated fourth-seeded Krystal
Ashby, 235-217, to win her second career Queens title. The
25th edition of the Queens, a scratch tournament for female
bowlers, was held at B’ville Sports Bowl.
“I have a lot of adrenaline now,” Creno said. “It feels great
to win it again.”
Ashby and Creno are familiar foes in the Queens final.
This is the third time they have met for the crown with Ashby
winning in 2013 and Creno in 2006, the year she made her
debut in the adult ranks.
“Krystal and I have met each other three times now,” Creno
said. “The whole time I’m watching the stepladder I’m thinking she’s going to be tough. I couldn’t help thinking we’re
going to meet each other again. Going up against her, we’re
so close in age and we’ve known each other for so long.”
The championship match started out with Creno making
a rare mistake. On her first ball, she left a 4-5 split, which
she failed to convert. It was only her second open in eight
tournament games.
“All day long, I’d bowled seven games at this point, I had
only one open in seven games,” Creno said. “I missed one
10-pin. That was it. So that was crazy I’d start the final match
with an open. But it is what it is.”
It that would be the only error Creno made as she ripped
off six in row while Ashby struggled to carry corner pins in
the final. Asbhy now has three second-place finishes in the
Queens.
“I knew I had to carry because there was going to be a lot of
striking between the two of us,” Ashby said. “The 10-pin was a
tough one today. I just couldn’t carry when I needed to.”
Despite the first-frame open, Creno executed a flawless
game and tournament, averaging 244 for eight games. Ashby bowled the maximum 11 games and finished with a 217
average.
“I got lucky with a couple late 7’s that rolled out for me,
which is nice,” Creno said. “I had a little run going and that
always feels good after an open.”
Creno was the tournament’s top qualifier with a 977 four-
Cortland’s Pitts wins
Senior Masters
If there’s a tournament, Chuck Pitts is
eager to bowl in it, no matter the location.
“I love the competition,” said Pitts, of
Cortland. “I love coming up here to bowl.”
The 56-year-old right-hander had a successful trip to Syracuse as he defeated
Larry Porter, 462-415, to win the fourth
annual Senior Masters Dec. 5 at Bowl Mor
Lanes.
“This is great,” Pitts said. “I’ve won
many tournaments in Cortland and Elmira, but to win something in this area is
great. It’s unbelievable.”
Pitts, a member of two Southern Tier
bowling halls of fame, faced a tough lineup in match play, defeating Jim Malone,
Sam Ventura, Bill Timmons and Mike
Tryniski before eliminating Porter, a former U.S. Senior Team member.
Although Pitts had a 78-pin lead, Porter
got off to a good start in the second game
with four in a row. Pitts said he focused
on staying with Porter for the remainder
of the game.
“Seventy pins can evaporate very
quickly; I’ve seen it,” Pitts said. “I’ve been
the same situation before where people get
eight in a row. You can’t put pressure on
yourself. If he strikes, you strike.”
Although Pitts left a 3-4-6-7-9-10 split
in the fifth frame, Porter ran out of frames
to overcome the deficit.
Pitts said a ball switch was the difference in his title run.
“After the first match I switched balls,”
he said. “Instead of using a ball with a
hole in it, I went with one without a hole
in it. The Red Widow Legend by Hammer.
That ball worked the best. Once I started
switching pairs, I never had to move.”
Pitts belongs to the Seven Valley and
Elmira USBC Bowling Halls of Fame. He
grew up in Elmira and his parents owed
Rossi Lanes for many years. Pitts frequently bowls in PBA regional events and
2015 Senior Masters champion Chuck Pitts
game total, including a tourney-high 279 game. She also led
the semifinals with a 740 three-game set. Defending champion Roseann DiFlorio qualified for the semifinals but failed to
advance to the stepladder finals.
To celebrate the silver anniversary of the event, past champions were recognized during a ceremony and each received
a tiara to commemorate their victory.
The event was sponsored by Bowl Mor Lanes, Bowl Mor
Pro Shop, B’ville Sports Bowl, Lakeview Bowling Center,
The Pro Shop at Lakeview Bowling Center, Legends Pro
Shop, and Striking Results Pro Shop.

Rare bowling feats
Unusual pin count for a spare: For Bill Timmons, it was a
spare attempt you don’t see every day. Bowling on the Bear Pattern,
Timmons left the 1-2-3-5-7-10 in the PBA Experience League at
Lakeview Bowling Center in Liverpool. Teammate Ryan Bertrand
took a photo of the unusual pin count and said Timmon’s ball went
through the 6-pin, got the 9-pin and a pin bounced out to hit the
8-pin which went straight into the 4-pin. Timmons converted the
spare.

Bill Timmons left the 1-2-3-57-10 in the PBA Experience
League Dec. 7 at Lakeview
Bowling Center.
Teammates Todd Fenchel (left)
and Jeff Cooper both fired an
800 series on the same night
at B’ville Sports Bowl.
Teammates bowl 800 series on same night: Have you ever seen
two bowlers on the team roll an 800 at the same time? It happened
Nov. 23 at B’ville Sports Bowl. Jeff Cooper and Todd Fenchel both
fired 800 series in the same match.
Cooper and Fenchel are teammates on the United Auto Parts
team in the Tom DiRenzo Insurance League. Fenchel opened with
a 299 game followed by a 278 and a 246 for an 823 series. Cooper
rolled games of 258, 269 and 279 for an 806 series.
For Fenchel, it was his fifth career 800 and for Cooper, it was his
third. Fenchel used a DV8 Thug Corrupt drilled by Mike McCracken. Jeff used a Roto Grip Mutant Cell drilled by Butch VanGorden.
Cooper and Fenchel were bowling against Kevin Peirson’s team.
Most people would agree that even in this high scoring era where
award scores are as common as a stone 8-pin that this is an incredible achievement.

could not attend as he is currently serving his country.
Joe Conti finishes second at King Pin Singles: Joe Conti Jr. finished second to two-time USBC Open champion Mike Rose Jr. at the 45th annual King Pin
Singles Handicap Tournament in Rome. The tournament took place Dec. 2-6 at King
Pin Lanes.
Rose, of Rochester, rolled a 760 series including a 299 first game on an extremely
challenging condition and cashed $2,000.
Conti posted a 704 series for second followed by Jimmy Zimmerman with a 700.
Rose, Conti and Zimmerman were the only players out of 244 entries to break 700.
Low score to cash was 596.
Conti cashed $1,000 for second while Zimmerman earned $700. Derek Magno
was fifth good enough for $500.
Chris Allen: Fresh off a nice 748 series in the Canale Insurance League at Lighthouse Lanes on Nov. 17, Allen won Dana Hollister’s Thanksgiving 3-6-9 Tournament in Oswego on Nov. 28. Allen finished with a 1,027 four-game total.
Brothers Mike and Derek Engler finished second and third, respectively. Mike
Engler had a 974 total while Derek shot 961. The Englers are the sons of Lighthouse
mechanic and ball driller Russ Engler.

HIGH SCHOOL BOWLING PREVIEW
It was a perfect start for Fulton senior
Kyle Denson.
In his first Onondaga High School League
game of the year, Denson ripped off 12
straight strikes for his first career 300, on
lanes 29-30 at AMF Strike N Spare in Mattydale Dec. 1 when the Raiders and the OHSL
kicked off the 2015-16 bowling season.
Denson remained composed throughout
the game. His only burst of emotion was
to clap his hands together at the line after his last ball crushed the pocket. The
same couldn’t be said of his mother, Jackie, who became increasingly anxious after
every strike. Denson finished with a 705
series.
“I think I was more nervous than he
was,” Jackie Denson said.
While this was his first 300, Kyle Denson has been putting up big scores for last
two years at the varsity level. He’s lead
the OHSL in average for the last two years
(223 last year) and rolled the top series
(752) in the OHSL last season. On Dec.
10, Denson rolled a career-best 806 series
with a 289 game.
Denson anchors a solid Raiders team that
advanced to the state tournament last March
as the Section III overall champion. The Fulton lineup will be without first-team all-star
Bryce Guernsey, who opted not to compete
this winter to focus on baseball.
Nick Joss of Cicero-North Syracuse is a returning
first team all-league bowler for the Northstars.
Haley Youker of East Syracuse Minoa tapes up
her finger during OHSL competition Dec. 2. The
left-hander is one of the top returning bowlers in
the league.
(Left to right) Brothers Devin, Dietrick and Deacon Roberson will compete for Liverpool this winter.
Dietrick is a senior while twins Devin and Deacon are seventh graders.

Academy. The C-NS team includes (left to right) Coach Tom Feeney, Zach Emm,

HIGH SCHOOL BOWLING PREVIEW
(continued from page 4)
There are a few teams with the firepower to dethrone the Raiders, namely
Homer, Utica Proctor, East Syracuse Minoa and Cicero-North Syracuse.
ESM is led by Dan Marriott, who posted
his first career 300 game Dec. 9. Marriott
finished with a career-best 741 series in a
win over Oswego.
Homer returns its entire starting lineup
as does Proctor. Homer rolled an impressive team total of 3,100 Dec. 10.
The Northstars, the defending CNYCL
champs, have returning talent in first-team
all-stars Josh Cloute (211 average) and
Nick Joss (209). Coach Tom Feeney is cautiously optimistic after all-league bowler
Jacob Fox decided to relinquish his varsity
eligibility and bowl in adult leagues.
“We would have been a legitimate contender for a league and sectional title with
him (Fox),” Feeney said. “So we went
from really experienced to really young.
But we’ll see.”
C-NS passed an early season test with a
2-1 win over Auburn.
On the girls side, everyone will be chasing reigning champion Utica Proctor for
the sectional crown.
In league competition, Auburn is the
defending champion in the CNYCL and
returns the core of high-average bowlers
with Hanna Ryan, Kate Stoddard, Katie
Feocco and Makayla Titus.
East Syracuse Minoa and Fulton tied for
league honors in the OHSL a year ago. The
Raiders were hit hard by graduation while
the Spartans remain strong with veteran
players Haley Youker and Jourdyn Buck.
Youker rolled a career-best 280 game Dec. 9.
Good luck to all varsity bowlers this
winter!
