Van-Far Junior High girls basketball takes consolations at Mark Twain
The Van-Far Junior
High girls basketball
team picked up a consolation win at the Mark
Twain Tournament held
November 26-30.
The Lady Indians beat
Mark Twain’s 8th grade
team 27-21 for the title.
Van-Far trailed Mark
Twain 7-5 in the first
quarter and led 17-11 at
halftime after a big second quarter. The Lady Indians pushed ahead with
Mark Twain down 21-19
by the third quarter. The
Lady Indians allowed two
points to Mark Twain in
the fourth.
“We had a big second
quarter. We used our defense and finished those
plays after a turn over,”
Allgood said. “Our guards
really stepped up when
we knew they weren’t letting us have much inside.
We did struggle to stop
Mark Twain’s player who
kept them in the game.
Our defense really kicked
in during the fourth. We
went man-to-man on our
press and that caused
several turnovers. We
had a couple of big shots
to seal the lead but we
never let up on defense.”
Jayda Borgmeyer had
12 points with three rebounds and Alexis DeTienne had six points with
two assists. Naija Jackson had five points and
two rebounds.
“We fought hard the
last two games to pull
two wins out of three at
this tournament,” Allgood said. “Our defense
really picked up the second half and never let
down. I’m expecting us
to continue to improve as
the season goes on.”
Beats Mark Twain
On Wednesday, November 28 the Lady Indians knocked off the 7th
grade Mark Twain team
28-23.
Van-Far tied Mark
Twain 8-8 after the first
quarter and ended the
half leading 15-13. The
Lady Indians outscored
Mark Twain 8-6 in the
third quarter and put up
another five points to finish the game with a VanFar victory.
“The game started off
with a lot of back and
forth,” Allgood said. “We
used our size during this
game and really looked
inside to score. Mark
Twain has a great guard
who is very quick and
hits almost every shot.
We knew to win this
game we would have to
control her.”
Jackson had 11 points
with four rebounds and
Abbi Kuda had nine
points with four rebounds. Borgmeyer had
six points and three rebounds.
Falls to Canton
The Lady Indians
faced Canton in the first
round of the tournament
and fell 37-13.
Canton outscored VanFar 7-0 in the first quarter and the Lady Indians
trailed 15-6 at halftime.
Canton outscored Van-Far
14-6 in the third quarter.
Canton put up another
eight points in the final
quarter.
“In the first half we
stayed with them pretty
well,” Allgood said. “We
faced man-to-man defense for the first time
all season. That caused
some problems for our
half court offense. In the
second we finally started
the second half strong
and Canton took advantage with a third-quarter
strike.
“We kept giving up
second shots and had a
hard time breaking the
press,” Allgood said. “We
made some stops in the
fourth quarter but it was
too little to late.”
Jackson
had
five
points with three rebounds and Borgmeyer
had four points and three
rebounds.

Van-Far travels to South
Callaway and gets big win
A growing Indians
varsity basketball program followed up on last
week’s win against Mark
Twain with a 48-41 victory over a tough South
Callaway program.
At South Callaway,
Van-Far led 16-11 in the
first quarter and went
point-for-point in the second quarter to end the
half with a 28-23 edge.
The Indians put up
eight points in the third
quarter and finished the
fourth quarter winning it
12-8.
“It was a very physical
battle and our kids got off
to a slow start. We were
down 11-4 in the first
quarter,” Van-Far head
coach Pat Connaway
said.
“We called a timeout
and settled the boys down
and then we were able to
close the first quarter on
a 12-0 run to take a 1611 lead heading into the
second quarter.”
Connaway said in the
second half, South Callaway rallied late in the
game.
“The second half the
game got really physical
and we started to ‘crack’
a little bit but we were
able to keep our composure and were able
to withstand the fourth
quarter charge,” he said.
Connaway said Ethan
Gooch scored 12 points
in the second half with a
Ryan Nelson offensive rebound and put-back that
helped lead the Indians
to victory.
Tied 41-41 in the fourth
quarter with 1:12 remaining in the game, Gooch
made the first of two free
throw attempts with the
second miss rebounded
by Nelson, who was able
to score two points for
the Indians.
With a three-point Indians lead, Connaway
said South Callaway then
threw away the ball.
Gooch came back with a
to get some offense going
to put some points on the
board but we gave up a
lot of second and even
third chance shots.”

lay up and sunk two free
throws for Van-Far to end
the game on a 7-0 scoring
drive.
Gooch scored a teamhigh of 18 points. Brian
Kurz put up 15 points,
Ryan Nelson had eight,
and Nick Barnes had six
points.
The Indians hit 31 percent of their shots from
the field and 58 percent
from the line. Van-Far had
46 rebounds, of which 15
were offensive. The Indians had 18 turnovers.
“South Callaway is a
good ball club and is a
very tough place to play,”
Connaway said.
“For our kids to be able
to come in here and get a
win is huge for our confidence level, last year they
beat us by 24 points on
our home court. It was a
great win for us, but we
need to now shift our focus on next Friday’s game
at Wellsville,” he said.
The Indians are 2-0
on the season and face
Wellsville on Friday, December 7 in a game at
Wellsville.
