1st Vandalia “Art Parked” Sculpture Exhibit 2015-16 The Public Art in Vandalia (PAIV) Committee and several community partners are excited to present “Art Parked” 2015-16 a free outdoor sculpture exhibit on display through April, 2016 at Vandalia Art Park, 256 E. East Alkaline Springs Road. PAIV worked with Midwest Sculpture Initiative (MSI) to provide the seven sculptures for this year-long innovative exhibit. The leased pieces join “At Play in Geologic Time” by Matthew Weir, a permanent limestone piece created during Vandalia’s “Chiseled” 2010 Sculpture Symposium ---as well as the park’s entryway Mosaic Totem crafted by community members in early 2015. Special events and programming will take place highlighting the Vandalia Art Park installations throughout the year. This park is joined to the Vandalia-Butler Historical “At Play in Geologic Time” by Matthew Weir Society grounds by the new Vandalia Rotary Bridge. Vandalia Mosaic Totem Project—2015 The Mosaic Totem community art project was sponsored by the Public Art in Vandalia (PAIV) Program. Twenty volunteers met weekly to design, assemble, affix and grout these individual works of mosaic art. Each unique cylinder has been stacked together to form the two totem poles that welcome visitors to Vandalia Art Park. The totems represent the rich community involvement and diversity envisioned for the park. Vandalia Cultural Art 2015 Changeable Art Exhibit “AWalk Through Time” “A Walk Through Time,” a collection of 12 historic photographs depicting early Vandalia, is sponsored by the Vandalia Cultural Arts Program. The display is supported by the VandaliaButler Historical Society and celebrates the partnership between the two uniquely distinct properties—A regional destination combining art, history and recreation. This photography exhibit will change on an annual basis to encourage community involvement. A Mandala, designed by local artist Chad Wells, was distributed to area young people for their artistic coloring. Finished pieces will be affixed to the backs of the historical photographs for a long as conditions allow. Cotterman’s Market – I.G.A. Stores, family business located east of the Northeast corner of the National Road and Dixie Drive crossroads. Later remodeled as Cotterman’s Market with Groceries & Meats and Fruits & Vegetables. The Cotterman name is associated with much of Vandalia’s history. The Vandalia State Bank located west of the Northwest corner of the National Road and Dixie Drive crossroads. Bank organized Nov. 5, 1912 – pictured Teller Robert E. Jackson on left and Teller H.E. Wilson on right. Circa 1934 In 1923, a group of Dayton businessmen lured the Amateur Trapshooting Association (ATA) to Vandalia and less than a year later, a fine two-story ATA headquarters was erected at 601 W. National Rd. on 62 acres with a line of 16 shooting traps, all facing north. Last event held in 2005. Circa early 1920s Mr. Ferdinand Hoottinger (right) talks with a spring water customer in his Spring House retail store at 336 E. Alkaline Springs Road. Mr. Hoottinger (born 1853, died May 1, 1936) and his wife, Elizabeth Puslat, purchased the 19-acre farm in 1889. He sold the spring water for .05 cents per gallon. Circa 1928 Thought to be a view of canal boat activity from the east side of the Miami Erie Canal facing west at the south end of Tadmor (flooded in 1913 and now part of the Taylorsville Dam area.) Circa early 1900s Aerial taken flying Northeast showing a large turnout (over 1,200 automobiles) for the Grand Opening of the Al Johnson Flying Field (Dayton Airport.) Famous Good Year Airship is on the ground to the left of the main runway. Circa 1929 Northwest corner of National Road and Dixie Drive crossroads with Ed Shroyer in front of store with “Groceries & Meats” sign above. Gasoline pump on sidewalk below sign is the first gasoline pump in Vandalia. Circa 1930 Miss Mary Hoottinger (Jan. 30, 1904 - Nov. 22, 1997) helping bottle Alkaline Springs water for customers at the Hoottinger farm Spring House. Mary sold water on weekends for 10 cents per gallon for many years. Circa early 1980s Cassel Road (near Sunderland Falls and Cassel Hills Golf Club House) facing North. Man by back wheel of threshing machine is Buffalo Bodine and young boy on horse is Raliegh Booher. Team belonged to Johnny Booher. Circa 1907 Tadmor, Ohio RFD Route No. 1 US Mail carriage with the first Tadmor postman, Hammer Hoffman. On his first day of work he delivered 13 post cards and 25 magazines. Circa early 1850s Wells & Seabrook General-Blacksmiths shop was one of the five most public places along with the Davis Brothers Store, Rankin & Sons Store, Eagle Hotel, and Charles Briggs Marble Shop. Village ordinances were posted at these locations. Circa 1880s Northeast corner of National Road & Dixie Drive crossroads looking northeast. Methard & Sons Department Store showing changing period with traction lines in forefront on old Route 25 (Dixie Drive), wooden gasoline tank to the left, early model motorcycle in center, and hitching rail for horses to the right.
