and leisure is so important for good
mental and physical health. So, be sure
to take a moment to relax and exhale.
Spend time with those who are close to
you and spend some time with you!
We are having a few summer Center

participate in. First, it’s that time again
– It’s Movie Time! On Friday, August

movie, “Get On Up” at 7:15 pm at the
Hoyt Theater in Linthicum. Just to
make it a little more fun, wear your best

from 8 am until 1 pm. There will be flea

Come To Me
By ARW Mazie Rea
Come to me, all who are tired from carrying heavy loads, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28 NIV
When the world starts to fall apart, don’t get deeper into the mess by
going deeper into you. Studying your past or the people from your past
isn’t what God calls for in order for you to find the rest that you need.
Coming to him is how to you get over the things that haunt you. Jesus and
Jesus alone can set you free from the worries and fears of yesterday. God
wants you to live a life that is complete in Christ. Nothing else is needed.
He’s all-sufficient. His spirit has the power to heal, to set you free in an
instant, and all you need to do is come to him.
When you wrestle with your past, you take a detour. God’s will is not that
you should fix life but that you should have a new life in him. All the old
is gone and the new has come. So don’t waste your strength on figuring
out your emotional baggage; just give your load to the one who wants to
take it, and rest in the fact that it is finished. You don’t have anything to
work out other than your trust in him who makes you new.

Independence Day
By ARW Roslyn Smith
Independence Day, also commonly known as the Fourth of July, is a federal holiday in the United States
of America commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, declaring
independence from Great Britain. Independence Day is commonly associated with fireworks, parades,
barbecues, carnivals, picnics, concerts and family reunions, in addition to various other public and private
events celebrating the history, government, and traditions of the United States. Independence Day is the
National Day of the United States.
Our ministry just had another wonderful group of women celebrate their independence from stress, drama,
hurt, tears, financial issues, health issues etc.etc. How
wonderful does that independence feel? Even our alumni are
still celebrating their independence from so many issues that
plague us women. This is the time for ALL of us to celebrate our
independence by spending more quality time with our families,
pampering ourselves, starting our businesses or setting new
goals.
This Fourth of July was probably the best Fourth of July I’ve had
in maybe 10 years. I vowed that I was going to enjoy myself,
enjoy my family, cook on the grill and just relax my mind, body
and my spirit. We, as women, tend to always get bogged down
with so many issues. We wear so many hats. This summer buy yourself a hat rack and put some of those hats to
rest. If you are wearing 10 hats put at least 5 of them away. I know it won’t be easy but it’s necessary.
Remember to keep your independence from stress, drama and pain. Let the American flag {just like the
butterfly} be a reminder of what you are striving to be independent from. Look at how the flag just blows in the
wind so gracefully. Become just as graceful as that flag. Keep your independence from ALL of the issues that
are inhibiting you from blowing like that American flag or soaring like the Remarkable Butterfly YOU ARE.

Tips On Staying Cool This Summer
By ARW Sandi Wilkins-DeJesus
Welcome to the sizzling days of summer! Children are out of school, traffic is a little lighter in the mornings
and the heat and humidity are in full swing! When the weather is hot and humid, turning on the air conditioner
at full blast or sticking your head in the freezer may sure feel nice, however, neither are an energy efficient way
to cool your body down. So, how can we beat the heat and not see our electric bills go through the roof? Well,
here are some old fashion tips on staying cool during these hot and humid days!
1. Go to the library-The library is filled with free books, magazines, movies, Wi-Fi and, most likely, air
conditioning. Instead of reading or surfing the Internet at home on a hot day, do it at the library instead. And
if you have kids, be sure to look into what programs might be
available for little ones in the summer, such as story time or book
clubs.
2. See a matinee-Another place that pumps in air conditioning is
movie theaters. If you’re planning to see a new movie anyway, make
it a matinee. The ticket price will be cheaper, and you’ll be able to
get out of the heat while the sun is shining.
3. Take a shower – and don’t towel off-A cool shower is already a
great way to help beat the heat. But when you’re done, dry yourself
in front of a fan instead of using a towel. The evaporation will help
cool you down. You can also use a spray bottle to spritz yourself and
get the same effect.
4. Keep the curtains drawn during the day-If you’re not at home, keep the curtains drawn and the blinds down.
This helps stop sunlight from getting in and heating up your house.
5. Wear light colors (and sunscreen)-Light colors reflect light instead of absorbing it, like dark colors do. While
wearing light colors will keep you cooler, they’re not as effective at blocking the sun’s harmful rays from your
skin. Consider applying a daily lotion that contains SPF 30, so you remain protected.
6. Freeze your pillowcase-If it’s still hot out when you’re going to bed, stick your pillowcase in the freezer for
a bit before you hit the hay; that way, you’ll be able to fall asleep on a nice, cool pillow.
7. Use your fans-Unlike air conditioners, fans are usually most
effective at cooling people directly, not cooling entire rooms. Or
if you have more than one fan, and it’s cooler outside than inside,
you can position two fans in your windows so that one pushes hot
air out, and the other brings cool air in.
8. Eat strategically-We all know that eating and drinking cold
things can help cool us down. But you might be surprised to learn
that eating very spicy foods can also help you chill out because
they help induce sweating.
9. Open your windows at night-Opening your windows during the day can just make your house hotter.
Instead, wait until the evening to open your windows to let the cool air in.
10. Don’t use the oven to cook-Using the oven can drastically increase the heat in your kitchen. Instead, plan
for meals that only use the stove top, microwave or grill.

July 2014 3 Family Reunion
By: ARW Cynthia A. Green
Family reunion, got to have, a family reunion. Ooh ooh, family reunion, it’s so nice to come together, get together.
Hearing the lyrics and melody of the song Family Reunion by the O’Jays, lets us know that summer time is here and the
anticipation and sometimes aggravation of the preparation of getting the family together has come to fruition. It is the
highlight of the season. The family reunion is a time when we celebrate our families and invite our friends to join in as
well. As each year passes, we realize that the family is decreasing in size. However, it also grows with the births of a
new generation. It is a time when we honor our matriarchs of the family and celebrate the achievements of other family
members.
Each year my family gets together for what we call “Granddaddy’s Family and Friends Day Cookout.” There is always
plenty of food prepared by the family, grills burning, and lots of fun for everyone. It is a time when we remember those
who have gone on to glory and pray for the babies. Family, no matter how big or how small, how stable or dysfunctional, it’s family and to share time with them is a blessing.
The year goes by quickly and now is the time to prepare for next year’s Family Reunion. Get a theme in mind and start
moving ahead; for an event that your family will enjoy. Listed below are a few quotes about the family that can perhaps
guide you towards a theme for your Family Reunion, provided by Gathered Again:
1. “Family gives us two things; one is roots, the other is wings” -Unknown
2. “Family is like branches on a tree; we all grow in different directions, yet our roots remain as one.” -Unknown
3. “Rejoice with your family in the beautiful land of life!” -Albert Einstein
4. “Family is like fudge; mostly sweet with a few nuts!” -Unknown
5. “Family: We might not have it all together, but together we have it all.” -Unknown
6. “You don’t choose your family; they are God’s gift to you, as you are to them.” -Desmond Tutu
7. “Our family is a circle of strength; founded on faith, joined in love, kept by God, together forever.” -Unknown
8. “Insanity runs in my family; it practically gallops!” -Cary Grant
9. “The family is one of nature’s masterpieces.” -George Santayana
10. “Trees without roots fall over.” -Unknown

Think Like A Man Too Spoiler Alert
By: ARW Kimberly Hall
This weekend, I had an opportunity to see the movie, “Think Like A Man 2”.
This movie was about two of the characters, Mike and Candace (played by
Terrence Jenkins and Regina Hall), who go to Vegas to plan and have their
wedding. They get to celebrate their bachelor and bachelorette parties before the
big day and it was definitely a competition between the men and the women on
who would have the best time. It was clear that the women ending up having the
better time, after getting rid of Mike’s mother, Loretta (played by Jenifer Lewis)
who was trying to take over the bachelorette party by getting the ladies massages
and buying tickets to the Dionne Warrick concert. Once they got rid of Ms.
Loretta by hooking her up with Candace’s uncle (played by Dennis HaysbertAllstate man), they ended up stealing the gentlemen’s party bus and going
crazy by dancing on the bar tops to the rendition of Bell, Biv, DeVoe’s Poision.
We even saw a few cameos of Ronnie Devoe! The night ended with both men
and women in the jail due to a fight at the strip club they attended at the same
time. Since they got out of jail late, Candace and Michael ended up missing
their timeslot to get married. Cedric (played by Kevin Hart) saves the day after
being called the worst best man ever by finding the bride and groom a spot to
get married at the hotel. This movie was not as good as the first one. It did put you through various emotions
(laughing, crying etc) but it left you feeling like that was just ok.
I give the movie:
