We would also like to extend a special note of thanks to Mrs. Shannon Rivers for doing such a great job with the children this year! This is a tremendous responsibility and having a professional in charge allows the staff to concentrate on logistics and training sessions. This year’s event was the biggest camp yet and was attended by students and instructors from around the world including the US, Germany, New Zealand, and Malaysia! In addition, the event was highlighted by a variety of excellent Kobudo training sessions taught by guest instructor Kyoshi Devorah Dometrich. Check out the photo highlights beginning on page 3. More photos are available online at the Yoshukai Karate International Facebook page. The 2014-‐15 Tournament Circuit is off and running! The first event was the Bamboo Dojo’s annual tournament in August 2014. If you missed this event, there will be several more opportunities to accumulate tournament points. If you attend and compete in at least 4 tournaments, you will be eligible for a “Team Yoshukai” shoulder patch, which will be awarded at the end of the 2014-‐2015 Tournament Circuit. Please check out the updated tournament rules on page 12 and don’t forget to submit your results! Upcoming events include the pre-‐test training in New Port Richey on November 8th, 2014 followed by winter Dan Grade Test in Vero Beach on January 17th, 2015. If you are testing in January, the board strongly urges you to attend the pre-‐test training in November. 2

The Tsuruoka Karate Organization regrets to announce the passing of O’Sensei Masami Tsuruoka, founding father of karate in Canada. Masami Tsuruoka was born in Cumberland, British Columbia in 1929. After World War II, he began studying Chito-‐ryu karate with Dr. Tsuyoshi Chitose in Kumamoto, Japan. He returned to Toronto in the late 1950’s and is credited with opening the first karate dojo in Canada. In 1962, Tsuruoka Sensei was appointed the chief representative of Chito-‐ryu karate in North America. In an effort to establish the presence of the organization in North America, he contacted several American military personnel who also trained in Kumamoto during the occupation of Japan. Notable among those contacted was William Dometrich of Kentucky who subsequently became the chief representative of Chito-‐ryu karate in the United States. Fall 2014

arrived only half full. Fall 2014
A waterbearer in India had two large pots, one hung on each end of a pole, which he carried across his neck. One of the pots had a crack in it. While the other pot was perfect, and always delivered a full portion of water at the end of the long walk from the stream to the mistress's house, the cracked pot For a full two years this went on daily, with the bearer delivering only one and a half pots full of water to his master's house. The perfect pot was proud of its accomplishments, perfect to the end for which it was made. But the poor cracked pot was ashamed of its own imperfection, and miserable that it was able to accomplish only half of what it had been made to do. compassion he said, "As we return to the mistress's house, I want you to notice the beautiful flowers along the path." Indeed, as they went up the hill, the old cracked pot took notice of the sun warming the beautiful wild flowers on the side of the path, and this cheered it some. But at the end of the trail, it still felt bad because it had leaked out half its load, and so again it apologized to the bearer for its failure. The bearer said to the pot, "Did you notice that there were flowers only on your side of the path, but not on the other pot's side? “That's because I have always known about your flaw, and I took advantage of it. I planted flower seeds on your side of the path, and every day while we walk back from the stream, you've watered them. “For two years I have been able to pick these beautiful flowers to decorate my mistress's table. Without you being just the way you are, she would not have this beauty to grace her house." After two years of what it perceived to be a bitter failure, it spoke to the water bearer one day by the stream: "I am ashamed of myself, and I want to apologize to you." Why?" asked the bearer. "What are you ashamed of?" "I have been able, for these past two years, to deliver only half my load because this crack in my side causes water to leak out all the way back to your mistress's house. Because of my flaws, you have to do all of this work, and you don't get full value from your efforts," the pot said. The water bearer felt sorry for the old cracked pot, and in his 10
Each of us has our own unique flaws. We're all cracked pots. But it's the cracks and flaws we each have that make our lives together so very interesting and rewarding. We've just got to take each person for what they are, and look for the good in them. There's a lot of good out there. Yoshukai Karate International

"Blessed are the flexible for they never get bent out of
shape…" - Contributed by Jammie Adams, Body Combat Instructor
Dynamic Planks
Done properly, planks are a wonderful exercise for teaching trunk,
hip and shoulder stability by integrating a full-body contraction. So
what exactly is the purpose of having good core strength and full
body stability? To do stuff! Proximal strength equals distal power. In
other words, strength in the center gives you more powerful,
controlled movements.
The current record for the longest time in a static plank position is
3 hours 7 minutes and 15 seconds. That is beyond difficult to be
sure, but it’s also kind of pointless. Planks are an ideal starting
point for activity. Once you’ve mastered good plank technique, stop
holding it for longer amounts of time and start moving it.
HOW TO DO IT: Get into a plank position. From there, lower to one
side as you roll through the feet to lightly touch the outer thigh to
the floor. Lift up and back over, passing through the top position of
a great plank, and lower down to lightly touch the other outer thigh
to the floor.
TIPS: Be sure to get all the way back up to the top of a plank in the
center. If you are unable to touch the floor without an elbow
coming up, simply work within a range of motion that allows the
arms to stay grounded and progress over time.
