Minky Grant
Splendid Fairy-Wren
Blinky Bill
Minky is influenced by the beauty of nature which surrounds
her Sydney home. This inspires her to create intricate artworks
in jewellery, printmaking and miniature painting. All her works show a
whimsical sense of humour which delights in giving everyday events
a humourous twist. Her attention to detail and love of colour combined
with her quirky sense of fun has led to her work being held
in national and international collections.
Dorothy Wall
“I’m grown up now.”
From Blinky Bill Grows Up
Dorothy Wall was a New Zealand-born author and illustrator of
children’s fiction books. At the age of 10, Dorothy won scholarships and
studied at the Christchurch School of Art and Wellington Technical School.
In 1933, Dorothy published her most famous book, Blinky Bill: The
Quaint Little Australian. Her characters - animals dressed in trousers,
dresses, aprons and bonnets - act out suburban domestic situations in a
stylised bush land setting. The mischievous koala with his ‘boyish’
characteristics of adventurousness, impudence and curiosity have
delighted children of many generations.

Arthur Streeton
Australian Impressionism
Arthur Streeton
Near Streeton’s camp at Sirius Camp, 1892
Impressionism birthed the impulse to paint contemporary life and
experience directly from nature, to study the effects of nature’s
light, and to use a lighter palette and looser brushwork to proclaim
the artist’s individuality and sincerity and the immediacy of the
experience that the canvas mediated for the viewer.
Roberts painted Melbourne’s boom-time bustle; McCubbin found
his subjects in the Dickensian back-streets where he lived
and worked, on the busy Yarra River. In Easter 1888 Roberts
holidayed in Sydney and painted with the young Conder. Streeton
was given ‘artistic possession’ of the derelict Mount Eagle house
and painted some of his famous panoramic views of
the Yarra River.
The remarkable interaction between Roberts, Streeton and
Conder, together with Australia’s isolation from Europe and the
country’s distinctive landscape and sunny climate, give Australian
Impressionism an intensity and radiance that make it remarkable
even in the international setting.

CLARICE BECKETT
Sandringham Beach, c1933
Clarice Beckett’s evocative paintings offer a view of Australia
that celebrates modernity and the quiet beauty of the city and
suburbs. Her work was challenging for its time, and Beckett’s
story as an artist who never compromised her unique vision
and who continued to paint ‘against the odds’, is compelling
and inspirational while also being moving and poignant.

Fujimori Shizuo
The Japanese Print
Fujimori Shizuo
Anemones in July, 1934
20th Century art in Japan was a period of major innovation and
diversification. The revival of the woodblock printing tradition is
one of the most remarkable aspects of this period. Technique and
imagination in the use of polychrome woodblock prints link these
artists to their predecessors of the famous Ukiyo-e schools of the
18th and 19th Centuries. The Japanese artists of the 20th Century
are great and unique colourists, and the blending of western and
eastern influences at this time is a powerful subject matter.

Emily Kame Kngwarreye
Untitled, 1996
The paintings of Emily Kame Kngwarreye represent a unified
world of art that was realised through the production of some
3000 works over a short, eight-year period.
Emily began painting at about 78 years of age and continued
working until her death. At the time Emily began making art,
she was already able to express the planarity of the canvas
and the unique, moulded space in the painting.
Her art appears miraculous for its independently derived,
contemporary style of expression, which directly confronts issues related to painting in our era.
