This month was full of Chapter activities and happenings. With changes to the D2 Team, Region and District Plaque capturing, to fantastic Wednesday dinner rides, this month was non-stop! I hope the rest of the year continues at the same pace. The last thing we want is for the Chapter to become stagnant. Speaking of the changes to the D2 Team, Janice and Chip Neer stepped down from their positions of Treasurer and Ride Coordinator/One Call Lead respectively. Both Janice and Chip did outstanding jobs for us and their contributions to the functioning and wellbeing of the will be long remembered. When you see Janice and Chip, please give them a shout out and thank them for the hours spent working for us. Well, when team members step down, you gotta have folks step up and boy are we in luck there. Joyce Nelson, former Chapter U Treasurer and member of the District Team, has stepped up to be our new Treasurer. She and Janice have been working to make the transition smooth and seamless. Rob Rider has agreed to move from MEC to take over Ride Coordinator/One Call Lead. Chip left him in great shape with all our rides into the summer planned and scheduled. With Rob moving over we were short an MEC, but that vacancy was short lived! Janice Routt agreed to step up and join the D2 Team as MEC. Rob has been working with Janice and she’s now up to speed and getting all the MEC chores done and turned in with no drop in perfection. Again, please take the time to thank each of these folks for stepping in and stepping up. We couldn’t be the Greatest Chapter in Indiana unless we have folks willing to participate. Next month, somewhere around the 14th of February, Valentine’s Day occurs. Ray Gariss, Mr. GWRRA, had a great article in this month’s Wing World about also making 14 February Thank Your Co-Rider Day. I know I don’t thank Debbie enough for spending large chunks of her weekend straddling the back of my bike going to places near and far. She has been scared to death, frozen, dumped over, rained on, and baked. All just so we could be together and have a common hobby. You can be sure I will take Ray’s challenge and say a special thanks to my corider. I hope you guys give it a thought as well. Lastly, just a mention of the Chili Cook Off coming up 20 March. We still have a need for our baked goods auction items and sheet cakes for our meal. If you’re up to helping, please give me a shout. You’re also going to be getting one calls about joining us for chapter visits to promote the Cook Off. If you’ve never traveled to other Chapters (or if it’s been awhile) give it a try. It’s a hoot to see how different chapters do their gatherings and you’re always warmly welcomed. Until next month……. Rick and Debbie GOLD WING ROAD RIDERS ASSOCIATON CHAPTER D2 FORT WAYNE, IN FEB 2016 PAGE 2 Hi Gang! I just wanted to let you all know all the good places the Chapter went this past month! We started out the New Year with the Polar Bear ride at Ehlerdings in New Haven-BRRRRR FUN!!!!!!! We also had several dinner rides this month that went to China Palace, Cebolla's, Rack & Helen's and Agaves Mexican Grill. Thanks for everyone that showed up for the Rack & Helen's dinner ride as it set a new record turnout for Racks!!! ROB RIDER – RIDE COORDINATOR As the song goes..."To everything - turn, turn turn. There is a season - turn, turn turn. And a time for every purpose under heaven..." For me, 2016 is the time to transition out of my role as D-2's Chapter Treasurer. In 2010, Chip and I joined GWRRA/Chapter G since Chip was still working week nights. After Chip retired at the end of 2010, we soon transferred to Chapter D-2. A few months later, D-2's Chapter Directors, Don and Gwen Lamley, asked me to become D-2's Treasurer; Louise Pomeroy, D-2's then current Treasurer, was transitioning out of her role as D-2's Treasurer. I received excellent training and guidance from Louise. Several years have now passed, and, in each of those years, I served as D-2's Treasurer. It has been an honor for me to have served D-2 as its Treasurer. Since we have now sold our 2008 HONDA Gold Wing GL1800 Motor Trike (as well as our Tag-A-Long, motorcycles trailers, helmets, etc.), I felt it was time for me to "turn" to a new path in my GWRRA/D-2 membership. Both Chip and myself plan to maintain our GWRRA membership and involvement in D-2. I want to thank all D-2 members for not only your promptness in submitting your D-2 reimbursable receipts to me, as D-2's Treasurer, but also then for being expedient in cashing that D-2 reimbursement check - that promptness truly helps to make the D-2 Treasurer's "job" run more smoothly. I am very pleased that Joyce Nelson has accepted D-2 Chapter Directors Rick and Debbie Warmels' request to become D-2's new Treasurer. Given Joyce's prior GWRRA Chapter Treasurer experience (in Chapter U), I am quite confident in Joyce's commitment to and qualifications for serving as D-2's Treasurer. Sincerely, Janice Neer GOLD WING ROAD RIDERS ASSOCIATION CHAPTER D2 FORT WAYNE, IN FEB 2016 PAGE 3 LINDA BU DAN ROUTT NOW THAT WINTER HAS GIVEN US MORE TIME INDOORS. THIS MAY BE A GOOD TIME TO FIND YOUR HELMET, LOOK IT OVER FOR DAMAGE AND WEAR, GIVE IT A GOOD CLEANING, AND HAVE IT FRESH AND READY TO GO WHEN MOTHER NATURE ALLOWS US TO RIDE AGAIN. HERE ARE SOME MORE TIPS ON HELMET CARE THAT I FOUND IN ROADRUNNER MAG. 1. DON'T DROP: THE INTGRITY OF A MOTORCYCLE HELMET CAN BE COMPROMISED WITH A SINGLE DROP ON A HARD SURFACE. DON'T LEAVE IT ON THE GROUND, WHERE IT CAN BE ACCIDENTALLY KICKED, STUMBLED OVER, OR INVADED BY SOME OF NATURE'S CREATURES(ANTS, SPIDERS, ETC.). DON'T LEAVE IT ON THE SEAT OR ANY OTHER LOCATION ON THE BIKE WHERE IT CAN BE EASILY KNOCKED OFF. BE CAREFUL NOT TO STRIKE SOLID OBJECTS WHILE CARRYING IT. IF YOU KEEP YOUR HELMET SAFE, IT'S MORE LIKELY TO KEEP YOU SAFE. 2. STORE HIGH AND DRY: WHEN NOT IN USE, A MOTOERCYCLE HELMET SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO DRY OUT ON THE INSIDE AND THEN STORED SOMEWHERE AWAY FROM THE ELEMENTS. KEEP YOURS IN A SAFE LOCATION. AVOID STORAGE NEAR GASOLINE, CLEANING FLUIDS, EXHAUST FUMES, OR EXCESSIVE HEAT, AND DO NOT LEAVE ITEMS INSIDE THAT MAY SOIL OR COMPRESS THE INNER LINING (E.G., SWEAT-SOAKED GLOVES). 3. KEEP IT CLEAN: LIKE MANY OTHER ACCESSORIES, KEEPING A HELMET CLEAN AFTER USE HELPS TO PROLONG ITS LIFE. PAY CLOSE ATTENTION TO: AIR DUCTS: BE CAREFUL NOT TO DAMAGE PASSAGEWAYS WHEN REMOVING DEBRIS, AND DON'T USE SHARP OBJECT FOR CLEANING. EXTERIOR: USE SOAP AND WATER AND A SOFT RAG, NOT WINDEX OR SOME OTHER TYPE OF CORROSIVE CLEANER. INTERIOR: NON-SCENTED DRIER SHEETS CAN BE USED TO REMOVE ODORS. OTHERWISE A WET RAG WITH A LITTLE SOEP APPLIED TO IT WILL DO THE JOB. 4. CHECK IT REGURARLY: PERFORM A PERIODIC INSPECTION OF THE HELMETS MAJOR COMPONENTS: OUTSIDE SHELL: LOOK FOR ANY CRACKS, SCRATCHES, OR DINGS THAT INDICATE THE HELMET HAS SUSTAINED SOME TYPE OF IMPACT. DISCOLORATION OR DEFORMITIES MAY HINT AT EXPOSURE TO HARMFUL CHEMICALS, EXCESSIVE HEAT, OR AGING. MAKE SURE ALL AIR DUCTS PASSAGES ARE CLEAR OF DEBRIS. INSIDE SHELL: REMOVE THE INSIDE PADDING AND INSPECT THE STYROFOAM LINER FOR ANY SIGNS OF CRACKS, INDENTIONS, OR COMPRESSED FOAM. FITTING PADS: MAKE SURE THERE ARE NO SIGNS OF FRAYING, DAMAGE, OR EXCESSIVE WEAR, YOUR HELMET SHOULD RETAIN ITS SNUG BUT COMFORTABLE FIT. BUCKLE AND STRAPS: REMOVE ANY SALT ACCUMULATION LEFT FROM PERSPIRATION AND CHECK FOR SIGNS OF OVERUSE, SUCH AS LOOSE STICHING. THE BUCKLE SHOULD NOT BE DAMAGED. MECHANICAL PARTS: ALL VENTS AND VISOR MECHANICALS SHOULD WORK PROPERLY; MAKE SURE FLIP-UP HELMETS STILL LOCK SECURELY IN THEIR DOWN POSITION. HIGH QUALITY MOTORCYCLE HELMETS MAY BE EXPENSIVE, BUT WHAT THEY PROTECT IS IRREPLCEABLE. EVEN WITH THE BEST OF CARE, THOUGH, THE MAX LIFESPAN OF MOST IS AROUND FIVE YEARS. SO TAKE CARE OF YOURS, INSPECT IT REGULARY, AND DON'T HESITATE TO REPLACE IT WHEN CIRCUMSTANCES OR TIME DICTATE. Don't Make a Fuss About Valentine's Day!!! My dearest wife is always going on and on and ON about NOT making a fuss over her on Valentine's Day. She repeats that it's the thought that counts. Well, I put a lot of thought into the gifts from previous February 14ths but she didn't quite take to any of them like I assumed she would. Here's my list - see what you think: Brand new mop and bucket. I was thinking it would be fun to see what color the floor was because I couldn't remember. Romantic dinner at fast food restaurant. I was thinking that she might like to go inside for a change instead of fetching dinner at the drive through. Chocolates left-over from last year's candy box. I was thinking of how proud she'd be of me for not wasting food. She's been nagging me for years to recycle. Midnight moped ride through the park. I was thinking that I'm getting too old to be peddling on the bike. Dozen roses printed on high quality photo paper. I was thinking these would last a lifetime instead of just a week. 45 second back massage. I was thinking any longer and she might think I was interested in something else. Windows 8.1 I was thinking how proud she would be to be a part of the technology crowd.
