YES – To fully experience the State Park (6 miles from Ferry Landing) and Town Park (6.5 miles) and the Island’s beauty, you will need a car or be able to bike the round trip distance. NO – If you enjoy walking and will stay in La Pointe, you are minutes from a museum; gift & craft shops; hiking trail; kayak, paddle board, bike & moped rentals; public tennis courts; golf; marina; restaurants; Joni’s beach for swimming/picnics; ATMs, grocery; library & churches. The ride to the Island is 2.6 miles – 20 minutes. Visit the INFORMATION STATION at the Bayfield Ferry Landing for an Island preview! Mooningwanekaaning – Home of the Golden Breasted Woodpecker – is the Island’s Ojibwe name. Madeline Island is the first off-reservation location in Wisconsin to install bilingual signs. Anishinaabemowin signs recognize the Ojibwe’s sacred ties to Mooningwanekaaning. FREE Downtown Walking Tours: June 27 - August 26. Monday-Friday, 11:00 a.m. Four person minimum.
