The 28 year old boasts an incredible record of taking to the court for every Silver Ferns match since her selection in 2005 and is only the third player to have reached the 100 game milestone, which she did in January 2014. World Youth Netball Championship Gold Medallist: 2005 The Silver Ferns have a proud history of producing outstanding defenders, none more so than captain Casey Kopua (formerly Williams). Kopua has been leading the Silver Ferns since July 2009, taking the reins from retiring leader Julie Seymour. Her first victory as captain against the Australian Diamonds was in the first match of the 2009 Holden Netball Test Series, on 6 September at Acer Arena, Sydney. Playing in either the goal keep or goal defence position on court, Kopua is well known for her aerial intercepts and dogged determination. Her dedication to Netball was recognised in 2011, named in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List as an Officer for the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to New Zealand Netball. Kopua has spent the past seven ANZ Championship seasons playing for the Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic side and led them into the 2014 ANZ Championship Finals Series. 10 LAURA LANGMAN (VC) www.mynetball.co.nz Langman is the vice-captain of the Silver Ferns and after six years of ANZ Championship Netball playing for the Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic, signed for the Northern Mystics in the 2014 season. Just one year after being chosen for the NZU21 side at the age of 16, Langman made the Silver Ferns squad and won her first test cap against England in 2005 at the age of nineteen. That same year, she led New Zealand to a memorable win in the World Youth Championships and in 2006, was in the Silver Ferns team which won a Commonwealth Games gold medal in the final against the Australian Diamonds in Melbourne. Langman was also a member of the Silver Ferns team which won gold at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi. NEW ZEALAND NETBALL TEAM PLAYER PROFILES JODI BROWN LEANA DE BRUIN Silver Ferns Squad: 2002-2007, 2012-2014 Silver Ferns Squad: 2002-2008, 2010-2014 Caps: 35 Caps: 74 (NZ), 34 (RSA) Debut: 12 July, 2003 v Niue, in Jamaica Debut: February 2003 v England, in England World Netball Championships Gold Medallist: 2003 World Netball Championships Gold Medallist: 2003 A former basketball national champion, Jodi made her national Netball league debut at 16, and worked her way through age group sides to earn her first call-up to the Silver Ferns twelve years ago. Commonwealth Games Gold Medallist: 2006, 2010 The ever consistent shooter made her debut against Niue at the World Championships in Jamaica in 2003, where the Ferns won the world title. On the eve of the 2006 Commonwealth Games, Jodi suffered a devastating knee injury, but a year later, returned to play at the 2007 World Championships. The girl from Whanganui gained 28 Test Caps for New Zealand before stepping out of international Netball in 2007 to start a family. Now a mother of two and a world champion, Brown made a remarkable comeback to the Silver Ferns after a five-year absence. Her reselection came after a strong performance for the Southern Steel in the 2012 ANZ Championship, playing her way back into the national team in 2012 for the Constellation Cup and Quad Series. Brown is renowned for a high work-rate on court and at the start of the 2014 international Netball season, has 35 test caps. FAST5 Netball World Series Gold Medallist: 2012 Leana de Bruin has earned herself a reputation as one of the best Netball defenders in the world. An energetic and rangy defender, de Bruin began her international Netball career in South Africa where she earned 34 test caps for her country of birth. A move to New Zealand followed in 2000, along with selection in the Silver Ferns where she was a key part of the victorious 2003 World Champion making her on-court debut. De Bruin was also a key member of the 2006 and 2010 Commonwealth Games Silver Ferns teams, winning gold in the process. De Bruin played most of the ANZ Championship season for the Magic in 2009 before taking the rest of the season off with the imminent arrival of her first child. She returned to the ANZ Championship for two seasons in 2010-2011 for the Southern Steel. De Bruin combines with Ferns teammate Casey Kopua for the Magic resulting in one of the most lethal combinations in world netball. She was part of the Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic team which won the ANZ Championship title in 2012. The 36 year old continues to make an impact as a respected defender and is playing arguably some of the best Netball of her career for both the Magic and the Silver Ferns. www.mynetball.co.nz 11 NEW ZEALAND NETBALL TEAM PLAYER PROFILES SHANNON FRANCOIS KATRINA GRANT Silver Ferns Squad: 2013-2014 Silver Ferns Squad: 2008-2014 Caps: 6 Caps: 49 Debut: 4 October, 2013 v Australia in Adelaide Debut: 20 September 2008 v Australia, in Auckland NZU21: 2011 FAST5 Netball Series World Series Gold Medallist: 2013 2013 was a break-through year for mid-courter Shannon Francois, making the most of her opportunities when handed them by Silver Ferns Coach Waimarama Taumaunu. Francois was called into the team as cover and quickly made her mark with her speed to the circle edge matching the best in the world. She was named in the Silver Ferns team for the Australian leg of the 2013 Constellation Cup fixtures and earned her first cap against the Australian Diamonds in the third test match in Adelaide. Francois was selected to tour the UK as part of a 12-strong Silver Ferns team in January 2014 and her selection into the Silver Ferns team for the Commonwealth Games is reward for her hard work. She made the New Zealand U21 squad in 2011 and played against Australia in three tests. She was later named in the FastNet Ferns squad to compete in the World Netball Series (FASTNET). In the ANZ Championship, Francois has found her niche with the Southern Steel and has had another stellar year in the midcourt in 2014. A highly competitive and fit individual, Francois is now a fully qualified pharmacist and juggles Netball commitments around her work. After winning the 2005 World Youth Championships with the NZU21 team, Grant progressed to NZA and was added to the Silver Ferns squad in March 2008 following good performances as a training camp invitee. She has 49 test caps for the Silver Ferns at the start of the 2014 International season. Paired with former Tactix teammate Jo Harten in the shooting circle, Halpenny has impressed national selectors with her tenacious play, gritty determination and an improved workrate. Her shooting statistics are at almost 82 percent accuracy however it’s Halpenny’s overall statistics which have seen her elevated into the New Zealand team for the Commonwealth Games. A versatile attacking player who can interchange between goal attack and goal shooter, Halpenny also picks up more than her share of centre pass receives. Halpenny has been on selector’s radars for a while, having played for the 2010 Fastnet Ferns and the New Zealand U21 team and she has been in the National Accelerant Squad for more than two years. She is the only new cap in the NZ team of 12 to compete at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. She missed out on the team for the 2006 Commonwealth Games but was selected for the 2007 Netball World Championships in Auckland. Henry was also included in the Silver Ferns side that won the inaugural World Netball Series in 2009 and the 2010 Commonwealth Games gold medal in Delhi. With the start of the ANZ Championship in 2008, Henry signed with the Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic, moving to the Auckland-based Northern Mystics for the 2009-2011 seasons. For the past three years, 30-year-old Henry has played for the Central Pulse team where she anchors the midcourt defence. She has an uncanny ability to read the game and is always looking to offload into the shooting circle from the midcourt. Henry makes her home in Hamilton with her partner and young son. 14 CATHRINE LATU www.mynetball.co.nz Auckland-born shooter Cathrine Latu is proving to be a valuable asset to the Silver Ferns and ANZ Championship side, the Northern Mystics. Blessed with soft hands, nimble footwork and an eye for the gap, Latu has continued to add the polish to her abundant repertoire of skills in the shooting circle. After choosing to play for Samoa at the 2007 Netball World Championships in Auckland, Latu then completed a four-year stand-down to become eligible to play for the Silver Ferns. A stand-out performance in a composite World 7 team in 2009 pushed Cathrine Latu’s standing in Netball to new heights. Inclusion in the Silver Ferns squad became a formality in September 2011, making her debut against England in October the same year. Latu’s dedication to being in the best possible shape to ensure longevity in the game has seen her focus on health and fitness over the past six months, and she’s never been in better physical condition. She is consistently in the top three in the 2014 ANZ Championship for shooting accuracy and is playing the best Netball of her career to date. Latu first played in the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne for Samoa. NEW ZEALAND NETBALL TEAM PLAYER PROFILES LIANA LEOTA MARIA TUTAIA Silver Ferns Squad: 2008-2011, 2014 Silver Ferns Squad: 2005-2014 Caps: 30 Caps: 84 Debut: 26 October, 2008 v Australia in Melbourne Debut: 13 November 2005 v Jamaica, in Jamaica Commonwealth Games Gold Medallist: 2010 Commonwealth Games Gold Medallist: 2006, 2010 World Netball Series Gold Medallist: 2009 NZU21: 2004-2005 NZU21: 2005 World Youth Championship Gold Medallist: 2005 World Youth Netball Championship Gold Medallist: 2005 World Netball Series Gold Medallist: 2009 Liana Leota has made headlines this year, making a comeback to elite Netball in the ANZ Championship for the Haier Pulse just five weeks after the birth of her third child. A determined and tenacious midcourter, Leota has the ability to change the pace of a game. Her sense of timing with circle edge feeds into the shooters is instinctive and her natural ability has seen her reselected into the Silver Ferns midcourt for the first time since 2011. She was a key team member of the gold medal winning Commonwealth Games side in Delhi, so her experience in the cauldron of high pressure netball will be invaluable to the Ferns set up in 2014. FAST5 Netball World Series Gold Medallist: 2012, 2013 One of the most skilled long-range shooters in the world, Maria Tutaia continues to thrill audiences with her deadly accuracy and elegant shooting style. One year after her selection in the NZU21 side a decade ago, the team went on to win the 2005 World Youth Championships with Tutaia showing the poise and focus of a much older player. Tutaia was rewarded, making her on-court debut for the Silver Ferns during their tour of Jamaica just a few months later. In 2006, Tutaia won a Commonwealth Games gold medal as part of the New Zealand team at the Melbourne Commonwealth Games and again in 2010, landing the winning goal in the double extra-time gold medal match against rivals Australia. Tutaia has made headlines at the FAST5 Netball World Series in Auckland over the past two years with incredible displays of shooting long range goals under pressure for the FAST5 Ferns. With three different shooting ranges, the format of the game plays to Tutaia’s strengths with her ability to sink shots from anywhere in the goal circle. Now a senior member of the Silver Ferns side, Tutaia is fast closing in on 100 test caps for the Silver Ferns, and is on track to reach the milestone in 2015. www.mynetball.co.nz 15 NEW ZEALAND NETBALL TEAM MANAGEMENT PROFILES WAIMARAMA TAUMAUNU VICKI WILSON (MBE) (OAM) COACH ASSISTANT COACH The Silver Ferns coach and former Silver Ferns captain almost needs no introduction with her Netball pedigree as one of the world’s top defenders, representing the Ferns for more than a decade from 1981-1991, including the 1987 World Championship winning team. An epic extended extra-time 66-64 win over arch rivals Australia in a match lasting oneand-a-half hours was a history-making moment for the Silver Ferns, who successfully defended a major title for the first time following their gold-medal-winning exploits in Melbourne four years earlier. The gripping final produced all the drama, intensity and athletic endeavour expected when the sport’s two powerhouses went head-to-head. 26 www.mynetball.co.nz STATISTICS 2010COMMONWEALTHGAMES The Silver Ferns sparked up a gear to gain the momentum in an impressive second half but could not stop a late-charging Australia from clawing their way back and leaving the score all tied up at 47-all at the end of regular time. Fifteen minutes of extra time could still not separate the two teams who frantically put everything on the line, each gaining little momentum swings but unable to deliver the knockout blow. The end of extra time resulted in a 57-all stalemate as the game moved into extended extra-time where it carried on until one team had achieved the necessary two-goal buffer to secure the win. Again, it was close, tight and unpredictable as player’s battled cramp, exhaustion and some hair-raising moments before the Silver Ferns eventually closed the game out after converting a vital turnover. Playing the game of her life, goal attack Maria Tutaia was all class. Retaining her poise throughout, the elegant shooter calmly put the ball through the hoop from all points of the circle in a match-winning effort. Calculated substitutions and strong mental resolve, where everything was put on the line, were pivotal in helping the Silver Ferns pull off a thriller which was the culmination of months of preparation. It proved an extra-special 10 days for Irene van Dyk during which she achieved two significant milestones to add to an already glittering career. The ever-smiling sharp shooter was selected as the New Zealand team flag-bearer for the Games’ opening ceremony and during the tournament she surpassed Lesley Rumball’s 110 test record to become the most capped Silver Fern. www.mynetball.co.nz 27 STATISTICS 2006COMMONWEALTHGAMES Melbourne, Australia | Gold Medal match, Sunday March 26, 2006 New Zealand defeated Australia 60-55 New Zealand team: Adine Wilson (Captain), Temepara George (vice-captain), Belinda Colling, Vilimaina Davu, Leana de Bruin, Laura Langman, Anna Rowberry, Anna Scarlett, Jessica Tuki, Maria Tutaia, Irene van Dyk, Casey Williams Coach: Ruth Aitken Assistant Coach: Leigh Gibbs (* Jodi Te Huna was named in the team, but withdrew with injury before the Games began, replaced by Tuki) Australian team: Sharelle McMahon (captain), Natalie von Bertouch, Natalie Avellino, Selina Gilsenan, Janine Ilitch, Bianca Chatfield, Alison Broadbent, Catherine Cox, Susan Fuhrmann, Jessica Shynn, Susan Pratley, Megan Anderson-Dehn Coach: Norma Plummer Results: New Zealand 98 defeated St Vincent & the Grenadines 31 New Zealand 80 defeated Fiji 26 New Zealand 74 defeated South Africa 37 New Zealand 55 defeated England 40 New Zealand 67 defeated Malawi 39 New Zealand 61 defeated Jamaica 41 Semi-Final New Zealand 60 defeated Australia 55 Final Overview Gold: New Zealand Silver: Australia Bronze: England 28 www.mynetball.co.nz STATISTICS 2002COMMONWEALTHGAMES Manchester, UK | Gold Medal match, Sunday, August 4, 2002 Australia defeated New Zealand 57-55 (in extended extra-time) New Zealand team: Anna Rowberry, Anna Veronese, Belinda Colling, Daneka Wipiiti, Donna Loffhagen, Irene van Dyk, Jenny-May Coffin, Julie Seymour, Lesley Nicol, Linda Vagana, Sheryl Clarke, Vilimaina Davu Coach: Ruth Aitken Australian team: Kathryn Harby-Williams (captain), Alexandra Hodge, Alison Broadbent, Catherine Cox, Elizabeth Ellis, Eloise Southby, Jacqui Delaney, Janine Ilitch, Nicole Richardson, Peta Squire, Rebecca Sanders, Sharelle McMahon Coach: Jill McIntosh Results: New Zealand 101 defeated Canada 17 New Zealand 116 defeated Sri Lanka 26 New Zealand 67 defeated England 35 New Zealand 81 defeated Wales 23 New Zealand 69 defeated Jamaica 51 Semi-Final Australia 57 defeated New Zealand 55 (extended extra-time) Final Overview GOLD: Australia SILVER: New Zealand www.mynetball.co.nz 29 STATISTICS DIDYOUKNOW?
