XO Report Back Cover
It has been an interesting last couple of years for me at United. Due to a little short sightedness and a lot of course, horrible timing, we have and are faced with some incredibly tough
challenges. Last summer we made the decision to change our database providers in August.
This year we have been forced to move our offices by the end of July; Yikes! I guess at the
very least this makes us glutens for punishment to go through this at the worst time of year for
a pest control company. As you can imagine, the action I wanted to take was to just “Get
away” like in the Southwest Airlines ad and let someone else take care of it.
Our State Association, like many others, face the same challenges as well! We have a strong
Board of Directors to help direct the Association’s business in numerous areas such as
membership, education, financial stewardship, member networking, marketing, political action
and protection of our members and communities to name a few. This a daunting task to say
the least for just a handful of members who so graciously donate their time. I’m sure many of
you can read the tea leaves and have figured out what I am going to say next. Many hands
make light work and might I say a vibrant and successful WSPMA!
Here is my plea to you for some minor help with a few items that definitely need
attention and can go a long way to making this a successful year as we move into Fall and
finish out 2014.
CONGRATULATE OUR NEW VP! Alex Altizer was nominated and voted in as our next
VP for the Association in Leavenworth. I am very excited to work with him and am grateful
for Alex’s commitment to the WSPMA. Please reach out to him and welcome him to the
leadership team.

WSPMA PAC: We are almost out of funds and need help replenishing the political
action committee coffers. The PAC has helped support legislation and in particular
representative candidates both nationally and locally who support our industry’s
desire to protect the health and property of our WA communities. Thanks to those of
you who gave generously to the PAC during our Leavenworth General Membership
Golf Tournament Sept. 5th! This will be an instrumental election year for those
running for office in support of small business and our industry. I encourage those of
you who have not supported the PAC recently to help join the cause by contacting the
Association and making a donation for this year’s election cycle.
EDUCATION: Education is the lifeblood of our industry and of our association.
Please help support our educational events this Fall on both sides of the State in
November and our next General Membership meeting December 6th.. Please check
out the website wspca.org for all of the offered educational opportunities the rest of
the year.
EDUCATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP: Through our partnership with the Northwest
Pest Management Conference our association is awarding a $4,500.00 annual industry
related educational scholarship to a member or employee who desires to grow and
promote our industry in Washington State. We will be accepting applications through
the end of the year and will announce the winner at the Northwest Conference banquet February 27th, 2015. Please help promote worthy candidates to print and fill out
an application on our website and/or make recommendations to Tim Baker.
Please don’t hesitate to inquire about opportunities for you or your business with the
WSPMA on our website or by contacting one of the Board Members directly.
Blessings to all!

Meeting called to order at 8:30am by
President, Sean Bergmann.
OLD BUSINESS & OPENNING COMMENTS
A recap of the previous day’s events were given and the

The Vendors each introduced themselves and gave a brief
presentation. Joe Teague with UNIVAR, spoke for Rennie

$600 in contributions to be designated to the PAC fund.
Sean distributed a paper with the WSPMA Scholarship
Selection Rules and Regulations and encouraged the
Membership to seek applicants and submit their application
prior to the end of the year. If all goes as planned, the winner
will be announced at the next General Membership meeting
in February at Hood River.
GUEST SPEAKERS
Sean introduced our first guest speaker, Ken Krous with the
State of Washington Department Of Revenue. His topic was
on “Audits, Compliance and where and when Sales Tax
applies”.
Following a short break, Sean introduced Ray Johnson with
Johnson Pest Control and a past president of NPMA. His talk
was “Human Resource Management Best Practices”.

up for this fall. Additional education events are NPMA
PestWorld in Orlando Florida October 21st -24th. For 2015,
there will be the NWPMC at Hood River and Laurel
Hansen’s Ant ID in January.
EASTERN WASHINGTON
Jack Dein confirmed that the Western Washington Seminar
will be repeated in Eastern Washington. He also
attended a city council meeting in Spokane where
uninformed citizens were protesting neo nicotine products.
He thought it would be prudent for the WSPMA to attend,
with facts, to counter the protests in the future.

generous funds raised from the golf tournament. Bob Dold is
in the Congressional race for Illinois & he may send a
contribution his way.
Chemical sales are abundant on the internet. Larry has met

ASPCRO can intervene. Tim Baker added that in recent
conversation, the Department of Revenue is very interested
in the tax dollars generated. He will keep the Membership
posted.
Larry mentioned that licensing for bird control has been

EXECUTIVE OFFICER’S REPORT
TIM BAKER
A hardy “thank you” goes out to all that participated in this
year’s Annual Membership Meeting held in Leavenworth.
Our Vendor support was the largest ever. Golf day was just
about the best you could ask for and the river floaters timed it
just right. For those that didn’t, or couldn’t, make it, I have to
ask why?
Our speakers this year couldn’t have been much further apart
in both content and delivery. While we all pretty much
guessed that the Department of Revenue would be a yawner,
we were proved wrong. Ken Krous engaged the audience with
facts and answers that helped many. Our second presenter, Ray Johnson, while having much information, read his power point
show to the audience.
Every class or seminar that we hold allows for the attendees to provide feedback and comments about speakers, venue, heat,
AV, food and more. This is very important to us as we do review the evaluations and base future decisions from them. If we
don’t get the feedback information, we ASSUME that everything went as planned and we will do it again, and again, and again.
(Get the point?) As I listened to Members that had attended the Leavenworth meeting for the last umpty-umpty years I picked up
on a common concern that the Saturday afternoon BBQ was typically late and that many, especially Vendors, needed to leave to
catch a plane home. We changed that this year based on that feedback. Holding the BBQ on Friday evening, I think, was a great
move. What did you think?
While one of the biggest turn-outs ever, I still have to wonder why we can’t have at least 50% of the Member attend. So after
reading this please consider dropping me an e mail as to what we can do to get YOU (and your family) to the meeting.
(No, I will not hand out cash) And just a heads up; our next Membership meeting will be on Saturday December 6th in SeaTac.
Cheers!
