Prepare to Win in 2016: Register to Vote
Karen Cross,
National Right to Life Director/
West Virginians for Life Political Liaison
Are your pro-life friends prepared?
We’re less than one year out from election day:
November 8, 2016. In fact, we’re only months away
from the first presidential primary elections!
Are you prepared?
IMPORTANT DATES
WV Primary Election deadline
to register: April 19, 2016
WV Primary: May 10, 2016
General Election deadline to
register: October 18, 2016
General Election:
November 8, 2016
Note: If you are not from West Virginia,
you can register to vote on-line at:
https://ssl.capwiz.com/nrlc/e4/
nvra/?action=form&state=/
One of the most important ways anyone can help
save unborn children is with their vote. The impact
pro-life voters make in sending pro-life candidates to
Congress, the White House, and West Virginia’s state
legislature is immeasurable. Research demonstrates
that pro-life legislation saves lives, and every life saved
is priceless.
If you have never voted, or if you have moved since
you last voted, you will need to register to vote. If you
will be 18 years old by November 8, 2016, you can
register to vote.
You can register to vote on-line by visiting
here: https://ovr.sos.wv.gov/Register.
As an ambitious pro-lifer – by virtue of the fact that you’re
reading this article, I consider you an ambitious pro-lifer – you
will want to be sure all of your pro-life friends and family are
ready to vote.
An even more ambitious pro-lifer will organize a voter
registration drive in their church or community.
Some years ago, a local pro-life chapter organized a voter
registration drive in a small West Virginia church. Fifteen people
including the pastor and his wife registered to vote! They meant
to register after they moved but had not found the time.
In a close race, a few votes may make a difference.
Remember, lives are at stake, and elections have
consequences. Dire consequences when the White House is
inhabited by a pro-abort who vetoes life-affirming legislation.
Make a difference for 2016. If you’re not registered to vote,
do it now. Once you’re registered, or if you’re already registered,
make sure your pro-life friends are
registered as well.
IN THIS ISSUE
It makes a world of difference to
those whose lives depend on us.

Now U.S. Senate’s turn to pass pro-life reconciliation bill
4
Bill would curtail flow of federal taxpayer dollars to nation’s abortion giant
WASHINGTON (November 13, 2015) -Within the next few weeks, the U.S. Senate
is expected to vote on a special fast-track
bill, H.R. 3762, that would block about 89%
of the federal funds that go to Planned
Parenthood -- about $400 million in the next
year.
The Republican Senate leadership is
moving the bill through a rare, special
process called “reconciliation,” which
prohibits it from being blocked by a
filibuster. But the bill still requires majority
support.
The bill already passed the U.S. House of
Representatives, on October 23, 2015, by a vote of 240-189. All
three West Virginia Representatives McKinley, Mooney and
Jenkins voted pro-life for H.R. 3762. Please act now -- urge
your two U.S. senators to support the “pro-life reconciliation
bill” (H.R. 3762), to defund Planned Parenthood! Please do
not assume that Senators Manchin and Capito will support
the bill -- they need to hear from you!
The bill would close the largest pipeline for federal funding
of Planned Parenthood, Medicaid, and apply as well to the
Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) and the Title V
and Title XX block grant programs. These sources account for
roughly 89% of all federal funds that currently flow to Planned
Parenthood. Under the bill, the amounts denied to Planned
Parenthood are reallocated to community
health centers.
Planned Parenthood is the nation’s
largest provider of abortions – at least
one-third of all abortions in the U.S.
are performed at Planned Parenthoodaffiliated facilities. According to their
most recent annual report, Planned
Parenthood received at least $528 million
annually from the federal government or
state and local governments.
It takes just minutes to send an
email to your two U.S. senators,
employing the easy-to-use tools at
the NRL Legislative Action Center. When you enter your
address, your messages will automatically be directed to
the correct senators. You’ll be shown a model message
about the pro-life reconciliation bill, which you can modify
as you see fit before you send it. The web address is:

innocent child by the crimes of either parent? This is
only necessary to those whose ideology demands

abortion.”
Women who chose abortion for their children
conceived in rape suffer as much, perhaps more, than
all those other women who suffer following their choice
of abortion. As Jackie Bakker says, “Contrary to what
everyone had told me, the abortion was much harder
to deal with than the rape. The rape was a violent
crime against me, an innocent victim. The abortion
was the violent murder of my child, and I was a willing
participant.”
Abortion activists use rape as the excuse to justify
legalized abortion. In America, it is estimated that
1% of all abortions are done for the reason of rape. In
this brochure, these incredible people teach us that
abortion is not the solution for the victims of rape, both
mother
and child. Abortion is the solution for the rapist.
You can obtain this brochure through the state office

share the pro-life message about rape and abortion.

Dear Friends:
Most Americans are very uncomfortable about
the idea of abortion, but many of them cling to the
notion that abortion must be available for the “hard
cases” such as “in the case of rape.” Americans are
truly compassionate in wanting to provide help to the
woman pregnant from rape. However, if we focus on
the pregnant woman, the victim of a horrific crime, we
discover that abortion is not the loving choice for her
or her child.
Bekah’s Story is a new brochure that we have
developed to educate about rape and abortion. It is
about Rebekah Berg’s loving response to her child;
her recognition that her child is the second victim;
and that abortion violently victimizes that innocent
person. She chose life for her child and, in so doing,
she chose life for herself as well. But, her story
demonstrates that abortion is actually the preferred
choice of the rapist, because he uses it to hide his
crimes. She found out later that she was not the first
woman he had victimized; she was the third. “When
abortion was legalized in America, it allowed a rapist
to be able to cover his tracks and abuse women
again and again.”
Bekah’s Story is also about Ryan Bomberger,
who says, “I’m the 1% that is used all the time to
justify 100% of abortions…Abortion activists call

Unborn Child Protection from Dismemberment Abortion Ban
To Be Promoted in 2016 Legislative Session
by Wanda Franz, Ph.D., WVFL President
We have prepared three pieces
of legislation for introduction in the
legislative session for 2016. We will
work with our legislators to pass
these bills. However, it is not likely
that the legislature will be able to
take up all of these bills during the
legislative session. Please read our
Friday emails during the legislative
session to keep up with the progress
of our bills.
Unborn Child Protection from
Dismemberment Abortion Ban
Recent undercover videos,
released by the group called The
Center for Medical Progress, have
depicted doctors and executives of
Planned Parenthood discussing the
way that they alter their procedures,
using their instruments to dismember
babies to obtain intact body parts
such as heads, hearts, lungs and
livers, which can then be sold.
West Virginians for Life wants
to protect our babies from these
barbaric dismemberment abortions
by passing a bill that would ban
this particular abortion procedure.
We would like to propose a new
bill, which has passed in two states
and is being introduced in the U.S.
Congress: The Unborn Child
Protection from Dismemberment
Abortion Act.
This bill would outlaw a form of
abortion that tears apart the baby’s
body in order to remove it from the
womb. Like the Partial-Birth Abortion
Ban Act, it bans a type of abortion.
This particularly barbaric form of
abortion is one that is commonly
used when the baby in the womb
is between 14 and 24 weeks.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch Carmichael
has taken the lead in introducing
the Unborn Child Protection from
Dismemberment Abortion Ban, the
priority piece of pro-life legislation in the
legislative session.
Dismemberment abortion is defined
in the law as “purposely to dismember
a living unborn child and extract him
or her one piece at a time from the
uterus.” This is the type of abortion
done by the Planned Parenthood
abortionists in order to obtain baby
body parts for sale.
We need to eliminate this practice
that could lead to the sale of baby
body parts wherever that may occur.
Passing this law would prevent
abortionists from doing the type of
abortion that allows them to harvest
baby body parts as described in the
undercover videos.
A petition can be found on page
4, asking our legislators to pass the
Unborn Child Protection from
Dismemberment Abortion Act.
Pro-Life House Speaker Tim Armstead
and House Majority Leader Daryl Cowles

Right to Life Political Director/WVFL
Political Liaison Karen Cross.
Please copy it, circulate it and return
it to our office, so we can be prepared
when the legislative session begins in
January.
Amendment to the
Parental Notice Law
The second piece of legislation we
are proposing is a bill to amend the
West Virginia Parental Notification
Law. We want to protect our
adolescents from being influenced
by abortion facilities to obtain secret
abortions, without the involvement of
their families. Today, 30 states have
an effective parental involvement law.
Up until the 1980’s, approximately
30% of all abortions were performed
on adolescent girls (under 20 years
of age). By 2006, that number
had dropped by half to 18% of all
abortions. Research shows that the
passage of these parental involvement
laws is responsible for this reduction in
adolescent abortions.
In West Virginia, a law was

the legislature.

passed in 1984 that was intended to
prevent abortionists from providing
adolescents with secret abortions.
Sadly, legislators passed a bill
that is not pro-life. It is ineffective
in protecting families, because
it allows a “second physician” to
sign-off on a secret abortion for an
adolescent. It has been referred
to as an “abortionist consent law.”
An undercover recording was
made at the Planned Parenthood
here in Parkersburg, WV, which
demonstrates exactly how the law
works. You can listen to this recording
by going to our website at www.
wvforlife.org.
It is unfortunate that West Virginia
has not been able to protect its
families and provide its citizens with
the positive outcomes that have
been seen in other states. Our bill
amends the state law to provide such
protection.
Obamacare Opt-out
We will, once again, introduce the
bill to opt-out of paying for abortions
in the Obamacare health insurance
plans offered in the health care
exchange here in West Virginia.
The opt-out provision is provided for
by the Obamacare Law itself, if the
states choose to take advantage
of it. We only have one company
providing insurance in the West
Virginia exchange, and it does not
offer any plans that include funding for
abortions. However, passing the optout provision will prevent abortion from
being included in any future plans.

State Convention a Huge Success
“WE ARE A VOICE for the
voiceless”
included Teen Day Camp
by Mary Anne Buchanan, WVFL Convention Coordinator
When the dust cleared, the final turnout for the West Virginians for Life State
Convention on October 31, 2015, was 147 and 25 of those were teens. “WE ARE
A VOICE for the voiceless ” was a resounding success.
Guest speaker was WVU alumna Priscilla Coleman, Ph.D., a professor of
Human Development and Family Studies at Bowling Green State University.
Dr. Coleman has published more peer-reviewed studies on abortion and
mental health than any other researcher in the world and she is often called
upon to serve as a content expert in state and civil cases involving abortion.
Her eye opening presentation was titled Negative Effects of Abortion on
Women and the Family.
Other speakers included National Right to Life Political Director Karen Cross
and WVFL President Dr. Wanda Franz on Winning the 2016 Elections and the
2016 Legislative Agenda respectively.
Lacey Dent addressed the evils of Planned Parenthood in her presentation
and Mary Tillman told the crowd about doctor-prescribed suicide.
Charlene Templeton gave her abortion testimony and likened it to belonging
to a “silent club” that you can never get out of. You can be an overcomer,
but you still belong to that club. Her heartfelt warning was not to take out a
membership in that club.
The buffet lunch by Gourmet Catering in Clarksburg was absolutely delicious.
The Teens Day Camp went well as Board Member/Chapter Leader Lacey
Dent can testify. She led the group whose speakers included the youngest
legislator in the country, our very own Delegate Saira Blair, as well as Delegate
Kayla Kessinger. Also a big hit, Alejandro Capote represented Students for
Life of America. National Right to Life Political Director/WVFL Political Liaison
Karen Cross spoke to the teens of her journey in the pro-life movement in
From Tears to Triumph.
The Angel of the Year Award went to Linda Day, who once again astounded
us with her decorating abilities. A big thank you to Linda, as well, for the
continued support over the years, not the least of which is the prayer cover she
has provided. (See the Pro-Life Profile on page 8.)

A graduate of Evangel University

West Virginians for Life (WVFL) with
open arms.
Linda first became involved in
the pro-life movement in 1984 as a
volunteer with the Morgantown Crisis
Pregnancy Center. There she first met
Karen Cross and was touched by her
compassion to help women in a crisis
pregnancy. As Linda experienced a
crisis pregnancy herself six months
after the birth of her first son due to a
failed IUD, her heart also went out to
women who suffered miscarriages or
any type of crisis pregnancy. Wanting
to be better educated about pro-life
issues, she joined WVFL to learn more

Teens For Life
Dear Teens for Life,
We were very happy to see so many of
you at the State Convention in October. This
organization would be nothing without your
support and participation and to see you guys
in action was truly a blessing. The two of us
were pleased to meet everyone there and
we believe that it is safe to say this year’s
convention went great! From the speakers to
the conversations to the activities, we hope
those who attended enjoyed it as much as
we did. We also hope to see you all back in
2016 with more friends for more fun!
Mark your calenders and get ready for the
WV Teens for Life Co-Presidents
upcoming Rally at the Capital in Charleston
Maria and Ruthie Deely
on February 16. The more people there, the
better, so invite friends and family to come with you! Our Essay contest
ended at the end of October and we hope to get the names of the winners
in both categories out as soon as possible so keep an eye out! Remember,
everyone who participated gets a West Virginia Teens for Life I.D. holder as
a thank you for your submission.
We appreciate all you do from traveling across the state to taking time to
write and submit your essays for our annual essay contest. You are all truly
making an impact in our state. We hope you all had a great year. Now have
a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
Your co-presidents for life,

about protection of all human life.
WVFL has been a lifeline of
medical and political education
about life issues for Linda. Each
state convention, Rose Dinner, and
quarterly issue of Life Matters contains
a wealth of information concerning
women’s health from medical
professionals, experts and personal
testimonies that Linda has found so
helpful. A source of great knowledge
and education on life issues is WVFL
President, Dr. Wanda Franz, an
amazing educator at WVU for many
years and also past National Right to
Life president.
Additionally, WVFL provides
updates on legislative activities with
laws being passed that support human
life. Meeting candidates for public
office through WVFL has been very
insightful and the organization has
always been a great resource for
public official’s voting records on life
issues. Because this information is
so very relevant, Linda feels that we
are uniquely blessed to have such a
strong organization in our state. Her
hope is that more West Virginians
will tap into this valuable resource to
educate themselves and also support
WVFL as the group continues its
legislative efforts to save the unborn.
Linda feels that the biggest
challenge that the pro-life movement
faces today is the image that prolife groups are very narrow-minded
people. Nothing could be further
from the truth. WVFL shows love and
compassion to women with every
pregnancy health issue women face.
One recent testimony shared at a
Rose Dinner involved a rape victim.
They gave all their efforts to bring
healing to her life and she is currently
a happy mother whose precious son
lives today sparing her any additional
negative effects of an abortion on her
body, mind and spirit.
“I believe that the future
of the pro-life movement is
dependent on more people
being lovingly educated about
life issues.”
Being equipped with this
knowledge, people will then choose
life and elect people who promote life
and life’s blessings. Linda considers
it a privilege to work behind the
scenes in support of WVFL; they
are her “Angels” of encouragement
and education on life issues. Her
greatest desire is to hear the Lord’s
words inscribed on the bottom of the
Angel of the Year Award, “Well done,
thou good and faithful servant” from
Matthew 25:21.
WVFL Treasurer’s Article
Hello Pro-lifers,
The year showed again that God is
deeply involved in the saving of His
unborn children.
A few of the 2015 accomplishments:
• The Pain-Capable Bill was passed in
West Virginia.
• The U.S. House of Representatives
voted to defund Planned Parenthood.
• The largest number of people in
years attended the State Convention
in October.
• Too many other positive things
happened to mention.
November 8, 2016 is Election Day. It
lies just ahead of us, so it’s time to get
busy.
I expect God to continue to take steps
to protect his children, but we as
chapters need to work as hard and
smart as we can.
Chapter goals for 2016:
• Get the word out to our local areas
about who the pro-life candidates are.
WVFL Treasurer Wayne Sanders
• Hold pre-election forums inviting
ALL candidates to speak.
• Connect with other county chapters
to be an even stronger voice.
God Bless,
Wayne, WVFL Treasurer
Suicide Contagion
From page 2
sciences and suicide literature
suggest that Posner’s hypothesis
was dubious, even before empirical
testing. You do not discourage suicide
by assisting suicide.” He goes on to
write:
“Many PAS advocates claim that
this decision is a purely private
exercise of personal autonomy, but
… research suggests that behaviors
like suicide, whether assisted or
non-assisted, influence the behaviors
of not only one’s friends but also of
one’s friends’ friends’ friends. No man
is an island.”
One of the best-studied
phenomena of suicide is the Werther
effect, named after a disappointed
lover who takes his own life in
Goethe’s 18th century novel, “The
Sorrows of Young Werther.”
The book was phenomenally
popular and sparked a rash of
copycat suicides throughout Prussia.
The dangers of romanticising suicide
are so obvious that the Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention in
partnership with the National Institute
for Mental Health, the World Health
Organization, and the Surgeon
General recommend the utmost
discretion in reporting suicides, lest
vulnerable people succumb to the
siren call of suicide.
“Suicide is already a public health
crisis; do we want to legalize a
practice that will worsen this crisis?”
asks Dr. Kheriarty.

The Chapter held a Life Chain
on the new bridge in Fairmont and
received many positive responses.
September 19 was the 15th
annual Respect Life Dinner. Keynote
speaker Isabella Yosuico spoke from
her heart about raising a child with
Down Syndrome. It was not only
educational, but very inspirational.
Kenny and Sharia Detrow traveled
some distance to provide some fine
music. The event netted $1,000. Over
$600 of this came from donations.
This will be used to support chapter
efforts including the pro-life booths,
the Apple Butter Festival float and
the newsletters. There was some
disappointment over the low turnout
at the dinner. The chapter also
received a $1,000 check from the
Knights of Columbus to be used to
pay the rent on their billboard south
of town on Route 522. The honorary
group of sidewalk counselors,
who have been counseling at the
Hagerstown MD abortions facility
since 2006, now have a total 427
saves to their credit and the number
of abortions has dropped from an
average of 170 a month to 70 a
month. The abortion facility has even
reduced their operating hours by
one third. The Apple Butter Festival
and Parade were quite successful
again. At least 300 pro-life balloons
were given out free to children and
a fetal model display with models
of four unborn babies from 12 to
34 weeks from conception were
on display. Many mothers used the
models to teach their children about
fetal development. Some women
used the display to show other family
members, and booth volunteers,
how many months pregnant they
were. Some showed their children
how small they were when they were
born. Several of them were born at
22 to 26 weeks. Three women took
pictures of the set on their smart
phones. Booth workers gave out 200
of the “12 weeks old” fetal models to
preteen girls, teen girls, a few boys
and a good number of adults. The
booth received about $280 from the
sale of bumper stickers, pins, and
from donations. A good selection
of pro-life literature was available
for free. A general comment is that
people are much more pro-life now
than in previous years. Many people
Doddridge County:
In addition to the Life Chain hosted
in conjunction with the Harrison
County Chapter on October 4 (see
Harrison County), Chapter Leader
Charles Northrop headed up a
second Planned Parenthood protest
in Vienna, WV in front of the only
Planned Parenthood in the state on
October 10.
Harrison County:
More than 200 people, including 14
pastors, and delegates Terry Waxman
and Patsy Trecost lined Emily Drive
at East Point in Clarksburg for one
hour of silent prayer for our unborn
and our country. On October 25,
the Harrison and Doddridge County
Chapters of WVFL participated in the
28th Annual International Life Chain
Event. In more than 1800 locations
across the United States and Canada,
tens of thousands of pro life people
gathered to pray silently showing
solidarity in the Christian community
for the sanctity of life. The Clarksburg
Life Chain was one of 13 held in West
Virginia. Only positive reactions were
received from passengers in the more
than 1200 vehicles that passed by
and only positive sentiments were
given by the pro-life participants as
it ended. Several pastors pledged
support for next year’s life chain and
one woman exclaimed, “She would
never be the same! Never!”
Jefferson County:
The chapter participated in the
African American Heritage Parade in
August with a float and many walkers.
They have been busy partnering with
the Jefferson County Students for Life
and their activities against Planned
Parenthood. A pro-life rally was held,
and Chapter President Regina Smith
spoke. They made the front page of
the local paper with a “not so shabby”
write-up. October 4 Life Chain
pictures are on opposite page.
Mason County:
On November 3, Mason County
Right to Life held their 3rd annual
“Thank You Jesus Dinner”, and it
went well with around 60 people
attending. The goal of the dinner
was to thank the folks behind the
scenes that support pro-life efforts.
The theme of the dinner was
“God Bless America” and Marine
veteran Delegate Jim Butler was the
keynote speaker. Delegate Butler
spoke about his pro-life stance, the
passing of the Pain-Capable Bill,
and other activities happening in
the Legislature. Delegate Butler has
his own excavating business and
made this statement “there are more
regulations installing a septic system
than there are in an abortion clinic”.
That is something to think about.
Delegate Butler’s wife Anna Marie has
a wonderful voice and sang the “Star
Spangled Banner” accapella and did
a marvelous job. We honored our
current, and previous, military men
and women, police officers and fire
fighters. There was plenty of good
food and activities for the children
who attended.
Monongalia County:
The WVU Homecoming Parade on
Friday, October 9 was a blast! The
theme was “The Best Homecoming
is the 1st One with Mom and Dad.”
The chapter will be electing officers
in January. Meetings are the first
Monday of every month at the
WVFL state office on Canyon Road.
New faces are always welcome.

told chapter volunteers about the
Planned Parenthood videos showing
destruction of babies for body parts.
Others told them personal stories
about their own pro-life work with
family members, fellow workers
and others such as in ‘pregnancy
centers’. On Respect Life Sunday
(October 4), 18 people participated in
the National Life Chain by forming a
Life Chain along Washington Street
(Route 522) in downtown Berkeley
Springs. WDTF broadcasts several
pro-life messages a day including a
five minute National Right to Life spot
at noon. Dick Byrnes of the Knights
of Columbus has developed a terrific
pro-life spot aired several times a day.
Patrick Crosby is the pro-life station
engineer. The chapter website is
WWW.WVFL-MCC.COM and is the
sole responsibility of Barbara Carr.
Wayne County:
This year the chapter built two
Life Chains; one stretching into
Ceredo and the other covering
several blocks in Kenova both along
Rt 60. Approximately 185 people
participated probably covering at least
a mile. The Wayne County News
came and talked to some people and
took some pictures; one of which
ended up in their paper. Among the
interactions with some out-of-towners
- a man from Michigan approached
some of the chain people asking to
take pictures that he could take back
to start a Life Chain in his community
and a man from Ohio stopped to
encourage participants and made the
remark “seeing the Life Chain gave
him cold chills”. He commended the
churches for taking a stand. Another
couple on motorcycles asked who
they were. They knew what Life Chain
was, but not WHO would take the
time to stand. On October 30-31, the
chapter hosted a booth at the CeredoKenova Autumnfest.
