MONTH OF AUGUST LOOKING AHEAD… HAPPY
MONTH OF AUGUST The saying, “Time flies when you’re having fun,” must be true because the summer is “flying by” and it’s already August! After several delays, Terry Herron, Rick Radcliff and Penny Lynn Smith will be here to present “Johnny Mercer—His Life and Music.” Music seems to be the theme of the month as we also host a Happy Hour with Bill and Betsy Peterson; and Clarinetist, Philip Lipton makes a return visit to perform a before-dinner concert to include classical, jazz and selections of Gershwin on his clarinet. The Jane Austen series continues and Judy Barton will be here with her popular Carte Boutique. Be sure to mark your calendar for any or all of these activities. LOOKING AHEAD… Looking ahead, we are planning two very exciting trips in the months to come. A four-day, three-night trip to New York to celebrate the Christmas holiday and a cruise to the Dutch Islands in the Caribbean. Life Long Learning has scheduled two very informative lecture series for the fall; Local Authors and a session on Neurology. Halloween will not be spooky this year, as we will present the musical show, “Doo-wop Diner” dinner theater. We are asking everyone to dress in the style of the 1950s. The Food and Beverage Department will be serving up Hamburgers, Hot Dogs, French Fries, Malts and Milk Shakes to enjoy before the show. Our Annual Christmas Party will be held on Thursday, December 17, and we are welcoming back Dave Masteller and his musicians. We’re so happy he will be with us to carry on our New Year’s Eve’s musical tradition. Looking far ahead to 2016, I have reserved first-call tickets to the Broadway touring company’s Carole King’s Beautiful at the Fox Theater in Atlanta and also at the theater in Charlotte; this will allow me to choose the theater that has the best seats available. ATTENTION: Be on the lookout for an exciting presentation planned for September. Dr. Harold Horowitz will be describing his experiences and challenges as an entrepreneur and President of Socratec, Inc. His company’s mission was to introduce technology into traditional classrooms armed with only blackboard and flip charts. The company’s objectives included finding creative ways to improve student performance and retention. Selected concepts will not only be described but also be demonstrated. And here is the fun part. Our Cypress attendees will be given the opportunity to role play students and experience the benefits of this advanced classroom environment. AUGUST 2015 HAPPY HOUR ON THE PATIO OR CYPRESS HALL Join us for a Happy Hour/Member Mixer on The Cypress Patio. Paul Murphy and the Dining Staff will be on hand to pour the wine and Randi has invited well-known entertainers to perform while you meet and mingle with Cypress friends. We hope you will join us to enjoy the summer evenings and the cool Southern breezes. Watch for more information in the body of the Newsletter. They especially appreciated the hospitality of Peggy Peirce’s delicious Ginger Snaps and refreshing lemonade. Two teams had to play a “Chip-off” to determine the outcome of the tournament. The winning team included Lois Hilger, Janet Nied, Neil Meighan and Bill Dix who was responsible for the winning chip. The runners up were Betsy Pehrson, Nancy Dix, Ed Deutsch and Jack Ray who chipped for the team. Closest to the pin for the ladies was Janet Nied and for the men, Bob Peterson. The golfers also want to thank Paul Murphy for the extra-large bottles of water. Unfortunately no one hit over the pond and onto the the green. Maybe next month! ATTENTION ALL MEMBERS If you have not turned in your Hurricane Information to Cathy Cole, please do so as soon as you are able. It integrates movements, breathing techniques, focused attention and selfapplied massage. Qigong means cultivating or working with energy and is practiced for health maintenance, increased vitality and inner peace. Why Practice Qigong? The gentle, rhythmic movements of Qigong reduce stress, strengthen the immune system, increase energy, and improve flexibility and balance. It has also been shown to improve respiratory, circulatory, cardiovascular, lymphatic and digestive functions. Because Qigong activates the acupuncture points and meridians, it is often referred to as “acupuncture without needles”. Who Can Benefit? Qigong’s great appeal is that anyone can benefit from practicing it, from the very young to the very old. The movements are easy to learn. They can be performed standing, sitting or lying down, and can be adapted for physical limitations. No special equipment, clothing or practice areas are required. Qigong is more than a set of exercises; it is an attitude that works to restructure one’s perspective on life, leading to balance and harmony with the world around us. ~Garri Garripoli, Qigong: Essence of the Healing Dance Qigong is a strategy for freedom from our cage of isolation. The Practice Leader, Tara Alisbah has practiced Qigong for over seven years and been a practice group leader for over five years. She has taught qigong classes at the Country Club of Hilton Head and lead community practice groups to over 30 people biweekly in parks in Hilton Head, SC and Arlington, VA. She has also volunteered in assisted living centers, both in Asheville and Hilton Head, leading the residents in qigong practices for self-health and building healing energy. 5 “Talking Wall Street” with Bill Dix Wednesday, August 5 11:00 a.m. The Art Room Cypress Member Bill Dix will lead a one-hour informal discussion on the Stock Market. How did we handle Greece, China and the crazy stock market? Was it time to buy or say goodbye? Were our assets properly balanced, providing us the peace of mind in knowing we were not too heavy in stocks? Speaking of stocks, let’s look for under-valued K-Mart “blue light specials.” Bill retired to Hilton Head in 1995, after 33 years with Smith Barney on Wall Street and now lives at The Cypress. He is a regular instructor of investment classes with Life Long Learning of Hilton Head. All Cypress Members are invited to attend these lively discussions. His classic “Skylark,” with music by Hoagy Carmichael, became the theme song for the Savannah-based hit movie, “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.” Three outstanding jazz, swing and blues singers will provide a night full of musical variety and history in their Johnny Mercer tribute: Terry Herron, a music producer and singer from Hilton Head; Penny Lynn Smith of The Sweetgrass Angels, the Swingtime Orchestra and her own jazz combo, and Rick Radcliff piano and music director will add some vocals and history tid-bits, too. New Book in the Library for August The Wright Brothers Bridge Schedule Party Bridge Wednesdays at 1:00 The Living Room Duplicate Bridge By David McCullough Two-time winner of the Pulitzer Prize, David McCullough tells the dramatic story-behind-thestory about the courageous brothers who taught the world how to fly: Wilbur and Orville Wright. On a winter day in 1903, in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, two unknown brothers from Tuesdays at 1:00 p.m. Ohio changed history. But it would take the world some time to believe what had happened: The Cypress Hall the age of flight had begun, with the first heavier-than-air, powered machine carrying a pilot. Who were these men and how was it that they achieved what they did? David McCullough, two-time winner of the Pulitzer Prize, tells the surprising, profoundly American story of Wilbur and Orville Wright. Far more than a couple of unschooled Dayton bicycle mechanics who happened to hit on success, they were men of exceptional courage and determination, and of far-ranging intellectual interests and ceaseless curiosity, much of which they attributed to their upbringing. The house they lived in had no electricity or indoor plumbing, but there were books aplenty, supplied mainly by their preacher father, and they never stopped reading. When they worked together, no problem seemed to be insurmountable. Wilbur was unquestionably a genius. Orville had such mechanical ingenuity as few had ever seen. That they had no more Health & Safety Committee than a public high school education, little money and no contacts in high places, never stopped Monday, August 6, 1:00 p.m. them in their “mission” to take to the air. Nothing did, not even the self-evident reality that every time they took off in one of their contrivances, they risked Library Committee being killed. Friday, August 14, 2:00 p.m. In this thrilling book, master historian David McCullough draws on the immense riches of the Wright Papers, including private diaries, notebooks, scrapbooks, and more than a thousand Buildings & Grounds letters from private family correspondence to tell the human side of the Wright Brothers’ story, Committee including the little-known contributions of their sister, Katharine, without whom things might Tuesday, August 11, 10:30 a.m. well have gone differently for them. Activities and Welcoming Committees Thursday, August 20, 2:00 p.m. Meeting Schedules for August NEWS FROM THE LIBRARY By Julia Whelan The Library Committee would like to introduce you to a great addition to the Library. It is a catalog of all the books we have in the Library, over 3,000 of them. The catalog is in a binder on the table behind the sign-out desk. By using the catalog you can find out if the library has a particular book that interests you and where it can be found in the Library. The catalog starts with a Table of Contents that lists the categories into which the books are divided. Then comes a listing of all the books. The first list is alphabetical by author and next list is alphabetical by title. After that, the books are divided into categories such as Americana, History, Economics, Politics, Nature, Travel, etc. Books of each category are shelved together and each book has a sticker on it indicating its category. As an example, should you be interested in learning if the Library has a particular book from the Biography category, it is possible to go to the catalog, find the Biography section in the binder and use the list to look up your book. The Library is arranged so that the large room with the big table holds only fiction. The room with the sign-out desk holds all the various categories. The audio visuals, CDs and DVDs are also listed in the catalog. The production of this catalog was a work by the entire Library Committee. A number of months ago the Members sorted all the books, discarded old and damaged books and started putting the books into categories. But, the major part of the work was done by Betty Mulholland. For many months she spent several hours every day recording every book into her computer. From that list the catalog was printed. Betty continues to update the listing as new books are added and old ones are removed from the Library. Many, many thanks are due Betty for taking on this task that will make using the Library easier for all the Cypress Members. 8 Food & Beverage Committee Wednesday, August 19, 2:00 p.m. Finance Committee Meeting Thursday, August 20, 10:30 a.m. (new time) Members’ Council Wednesday, August 26, 11:00 a.m. Regime Board Meeting Monday, August 24, 10:30 a.m. (new time) Sundaes on Mondays Monday, August 10 and 24 12:00 p.m. The Cypress Lounge Root Beer Floats Friday Friday, August 21 12:00 p.m. The Cypress Lounge Monthly Hearing Screening Wednesday, August 5 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. The Living Room Dr. Gwozdz will be sending Audiologist Hope Rowe who can trouble-shoot concerns, do minor repairs on your hearing aid, conduct hearing screenings and check for wax buildup. THE BY-LINE FROM THE MEMBERS FOR THE MEMBERS THE COAT ROOM HANG-UPS By Scotti Hammarberg (Your Coat Room Monitor) The Cypress Club House Coat Room regularly accumulates many items which get hung there and then forgotten. Please help us get those items returned to the owners by finding ways to have your identification in each jacket, sweater, coat, etc. that you plan to hang there. A small piece of paper with your name placed in a pocket or an address label inside would be so helpful. Umbrellas and hats often get left so these items need to be labeled, also. Thank you for your cooperation. NEW MEMBERS FOR AUGUST Kit Ingram from Hilton Head Plantation to Building D Trudy Backus from Cincinnati, Ohio to Building C Baob and Julia Qudeen from Windmill Harbor to Outerbridge Circle CLUB HOUSE DISPLAY WINDOW A Salute to America For the month of July through Labor Day we are displaying items that dipict all things Americana. Dolls, figurines, artifacts, a Teddy Bear and other “Red, White and Blue” items. Many Members contributed to these display windows including Emmy Drylie, Sue Macdonald, Barbara Russell, Mary Ellen McConnell, Jean Thompson, Gloria Rohr and Activities Director, Randi Selman. If you look at the wall across from the Display Windows, you will see a framed invitation to President Harry S. Truman’s Inauguration. It was presented to our Cypress Member, Catherine Cherrix from her sister who worked as part of Harry Truman’s Secret Service. Although Catherine was only teenager at the time, she did attend the ceremony and to this day remembers it as one of the best days of her life. If you have not yet had a chance to see this patriotic and colorful exhibit, please stop by and take a look. THE INTERNET GALLERY ART WORK BY: Marian Taylor and Louise DeWalt MARIAN TAYLOR: A native of West Virginia and a two-year Art Major at Marshall University, Huntington, West Virginia. She also studied for two years at Ringling School of Art, Sarasota, Florida as a Commercial Art Major. She worked five years as a Commercial Artist in newspaper advertising for department stores, an advertising agency, and a printing company in Huntington and Charleston, West Virginia and Tampa, Florida. She attended Workshops from Barbara Nechis, Judy Betts, Frank Webb, Bridget Austin, Nita Engle, Irving Shapiro, Mary Whyte, Joyce Nagel, Don Theodore and Cypress’ very own, the late Tom Ratliffe. Marian began serious painting in watercolor when she and her husband moved to Hilton Head in 1993. Marion was juried into the HHAL show in 1998. Since that time she has tried both pastel and acrylic mediums, but watercolor remains her favorite. LOUISE DeWALT: Louise works primarily in watercolor and assures us that she is an “old fashioned watercolorist,” using only the paper to represent white. Louise never had a formal background in art, but took elective courses at Wheelock College in Boston. While living in Mattapoisett, Massachusetts, and raising three small children, her husband suggested she take a “housewives course” at the Swain School of Design one morning a week. She loved the school and it got her started on a long road of painting. When she moved to Westport, Massachusetts she joined a group of artists who painted outdoors in good weather and in an old barn in bad weather. Through the years, Louise participated in many one-week workshops with various instructors both locally and in many different parts of the country. The only time she didn’t paint was the ten years she lived on her boat and was constantly cruising. 9 “HAPPY BIRTHDAY AMERICA” JOKE OF THE MONTH Submitted by Karen Brant “Lexophile” is a word used to describe those that have a love for words, such as “you can tune a piano, but you can’t tuna fish,” or “to write with a broken pencil is pointless.” A competition to see who can come up with the best lexophiles is held every year in an undisclosed location. This year’s winning submission is posted at the very end. When fish are in schools, they sometimes take debate. A thief who stole a calendar got twelve months. When the smog lifts in Los Angeles U.C.L.A. The batteries were given out free of charge. A dentist and a manicurist married. They fought tooth and nail. A will is a dead giveaway. With her marriage, she got a new name and a dress. A boiled egg is hard to beat. When you’ve seen one shopping center you’ve seen a mall. 10 Police were summoned to a daycare center where a three-year-old was resisting a rest. Did you hear about the fellow whose entire left side was cut off? He’s all right now. A bicycle can’t stand alone; it’s just two tired. When a clock is hungry it goes back four seconds. The guy who fell onto an upholstery machine is now fully recovered. He had a photographic memory which was never developed. When she saw her first strands of grey hair she thought she’d dye. Acupuncture is a jab well done. That’s the point of it. And the cream of the twisted crop: Those who get too big for their pants will be totally exposed in the end. EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH OF JULY BARBARA MAJOR Frank Licavoli, Environmental Services Director received this lovely letter praising Barbara Major, one of the housekeepers in his department. Because of this letter, Barbara was chosen to be July’s Employee of the Month. The letter was written by Cypress Member Ron Jack’s family: “We would like to let you know just how wonderful our housekeeper Barbara is and has always been with the care she takes of our home and especially the care she took with my Mom. She would even stop by The Preston Health Center and say hello to our mom. The house always looks beautiful. I meant to write this note at Christmas for my dad, so this long overdue, however my Dad wanted us to let you know how much we appreciate Barbara. Congratulations—Barbara Major, Employee of the Month for July! 11 PHYSICAL WELLNESS By Cathy Cole, Wellness Director After working at The Cypress for almost ten years, I believe it may be the healthiest environment I have ever experienced. Every day, when I begin and end my work day, I see people doing something healthy! What I observe every day is all of the elements of wellness here at The Cypress: Environmental, Vocational, Intellectual, Health, Social, Spiritual, Emotional, and Physical. It is the month of August and we are celebrating Physical Wellness. In a nutshell, as we are all aware, Physical Wellness has to do with the physical part of us. We know it means eating well, exercise, and healthy lifestyle choices. All of these things affect how we will feel tomorrow, how long we may live and, more importantly, the quality of our life. Physical wellness interconnects with every other dimension of wellness. An important part of being physically well is being happy. If you are feeling run down try laughing more. There are many researchers that think laughter just might be the best medicine. A good laugh can help you feel relaxed throughout your whole body. And, apparently laughing burns calories! I need to start laughing more! Laugh Your Stress and Pain Away! It’s hard to believe there have been research studies regarding laughing! While it may be difficult to believe that laughter can have positive health benefits, a good hearty laugh changes us physiologically. Think about it. We stretch our muscles throughout our body, our pulse and blood pressure go up and we breathe faster. All of these things send more oxygen to our tissues. Here are some things that studies have shown about physical wellness and laughter: Improve your immune system – Laughter can turn negative thoughts, which cause stress, into positive ones. This will decrease stress hormones. Some studies have shown that having a good attitude and sense of humor may raise the level of infection fighting antibodies in our body. We all need that! Stimulate organs – laughter increases your oxygen intake; stimulates your heart, lungs and muscles and triggers the release of endorphins, the body’s natural “feel-good” chemicals. It improves the function of blood vessels and increases blood flow in the heart, which can help protect against a heart attack and other cardiovascular problems. Relax the whole body – A good, hearty laugh relieves physical tension and stress, leaving your muscles relaxed for up to 45 minutes afterwards. It can also improve sleep. And last but not least: Laughter can improve your mood – Laughter can help lessen depression and anxiety and make you feel happier, if only for a little while. If laughter helps with all of these things it sure is worth it a little moment in time to laugh away! CYPRESS HALL, LIVING ROOM, ART ROOM AND GAME ROOM SIGN-UP PROCEDURE!!!
