A Note From Mayor O’Connor
As Mayor of Berwyn, it is my commitment
to keep the City clean and pleasant to
live in. Recycling and reducing waste is
a necessity for all of us. Please refer to
this guide often when needing to identify
what can and cannot be recycled and
how to dispose of certain items.
Make it a priority to Reduce, Reuse, & Recycle, conserve
energy and help keep our water clean. Be an example to
everyone around you to keep Berwyn beautiful.
The City of Berwyn is a community where people live with
pride and we are devoted to keep it that way. By working
together we can help Berwyn be cleaner and more enjoyable
for all.
Michael A. O’Connor, Mayor

Don’t Get A Fine,
Keep Berwyn Clean!
The City of Berwyn follows the Illinois Statute on fines for
improper waste disposal. These fines can range from $50 $750 per day. Follow these simple steps to assure that you
do not receive citations.
• Keep lids closed completely on all garbage and recycle
toters.
• Do not put out any large items out earlier than 6:00 pm
the day before pick-up.
• Do not place non-recyclable items in the recycle toter.
• No kitchen waste should ever be placed outside of the
garbage toter.
• Landscape Waste (Yard Waste) should be disposed of
in biodegradable Kraft bags that can be purchased at
hardware, grocery and other stores. Landscape waste
can also be disposed of in a reusable container. Yard
Waste labels should be put on the reusable container
and are available to city hall for no charge.
• It is the responsibility of the owner or tenant of any
premises in the City of Berwyn to keep the area from
their property to the centerline of the alley clean. It
should be free of improperly disposed waste, weeds,
overgrown grass and bushes at all times.
For further information regarding city ordinances please
contact The Department of Neighborhood Affairs,
708-788-2660 ext. 3211.

Waste Management
General Guidelines
All solid waste materials must be placed out at the curb for
collection by 6:00 a.m. the day of our scheduled collection.
Please keep in mind that separate trucks pick up trash, recycling, yard waste, and appliances, so each of these materials
may be picked up at the different times of the day.
Each single-family household has been assigned one 64-gallon
toter for refuse and one recycling toter. Multi-family households (2-4 units) have been assigned two 96-gallon toters for
refuse and one recycling toter per unit.

large windows that don’t receive direct

Choose a front loading washing
machine. Not only does a front
loading washing machine save water,
it saves energy as well. It uses about
40% less water and about 50% less
energy.
Use cold water when only using
small amounts of water. Even if
the hot water never reaches the faucet,
you are paying to heat it.

GREENfact If just 1 in 10 homes used ENERGY STAR qualified
appliances, the benefit to our air quality would be the
same as planting 1.7 million acres of trees!
Heating
Keep your furnace clean,
lubricated and properly
adjusted with annual
maintenance. If your furnace is working
at peak efficiency it will use less
energy and cost less to operate.
Clean or replace the filter
every 1-2 months - a dirty filter
reduces the airflow and forces the
furnace to run longer to heat your
home.
Consider purchasing a new
ENERGY STAR® qualified
furnace with a variable speed motor.
An average home can save up to
$599 in natural gas and electrical
costs annually when upgrading from a
standard 60% efficiency natural gas
furnace to a 95% efficiency furnace
with a high efficiency variable speed
motor.
Lower your thermostat by 4 - 5
degrees Celsius (7 - 9 degrees
Fahrenheit) while you’re sleeping at
night and when no one is at home.
Install an ENERGY STAR®
programmable thermostat. You
can save 2% on your heating bill
for every 1 degree C you turn down
your thermostat. With an ENERGY
STAR® programmable thermostat to
consistently lower your heat when you
don’t need it, you could save up to $80
a year!
