The Best of Berwyn Junior Citizen Recognition Program is a search for the top 8th grade students within the City of Berwyn. It’s an annual program sponsored by the North Berwyn Park District to distinguish teens that have focused their attention towards family, academics and bettering their community. The initial process consists of students being nominated through applications and letters of recommendation sent in by Berwyn North School District 98, Elementary School District 100, The Berwyn Library, Pav YMCA, St. Leonard School, St. Odilo School, Police Explorers, Berwyn Park District and the Berwyn Recreation Department. Beginning April 11th, the judges compiled of community leaders, teachers and public officials have the difficult task of sorting through the applications and interviewing the candidates to determine the person who best exemplifies the criteria for this program. The candidates and winner will then be invited, along with their family members, to attend the “Best of Berwyn” banquet held this year Hours Community Center 1619 Wesley Ave (708) 749-4900 Monday-Thursday..9 am - 8 pm Friday.....................9 am - 6 pm Saturday............9 am - 12 Noon Try it for free the first day of class. In 2011, NBPD introduced Berwyn Super Kids, a program in which the park offers classes that will keep kids engaged in a healthy activity from 45-60 minutes a day, Monday through Friday, during a Power Hour of programs. The purpose behind this is so that the children develop an interest in finding activities they can enjoy that are a diversion from the norm for them. NBPD believes that by becoming active, they will become well-rounded individuals prone to lead healthier lifestyles as they grow up. The classes offered this Spring include Hip Hop 4 Kids, Breakdancing, Kid’s Comedy Club, Little Theater, The Linus Project, Yoga for Kids & Fitness Boot Camp 4 Kids. These classes encourage children to improve their imagination, social skills, self-expression, coordination and most importantly their physical health. It is obvious that the residents have embraced this sport which makes it one of the most successful programs at the park. Jefferson Field is not only used for organized youth leagues but for adult, male & female leagues, as well as, just for fun neighborhood games. The great thing about the youth soccer program is that kids are not expected to have experience to join, NBPD staff makes it fun for all skill levels, even beginner’s. “Children have a natural joy of running and kicking, soccer is a sport that kids can grow up playing and enjoy for the rest of their lives,” says Raul Carmona, Recreation Supervisor in charge of soccer programs at NBPD. In addition to running and kicking, kids learn techniques to control the ball and work as a team. It also encourages creative decision making and strategic thinking. And it’s a fast game that keeps each player moving the entire time. At NBPD there’s no spending time on the bench which is what makes this a healthy-child program!
