Kim and I used to go to the Toronto Boat Show in Ontario with dreams of boating but alas it was only dreams. When we moved to BC in 2003, we automatically started attending the Vancouver Boat Show and have been going there every year since. We purchased our first boat there in 2005 onsite; a 24 foot Bow rider and christened her Boatini! That was the start of an amazing life experience. For the first time I was able to volunteer some time at the CPS Booth and met some members from outside our squadron. It was an enlightening experience, speaking to new boaters who needed information about what CPS does. I’ve worked trade shows for decades and I always try to create themes that I’ll repeat to booth visitors. I found myself using the same taglines below: “PCOC card teaches you how to leave the dock, Boating Essentials brings you back, safely!” “PMPSS is an affordable Yacht Club that focuses on training safe boating.” “Cruising for the first time with PMPSS gives you the confidence to venture further and the help you will undoubtedly need.” “Paying it forward. All our PMPSS trainers, proctors, instructors have LITERALLY been in the same boat as you!” “Once you get your membership and training you’ll find that PMPSS has a helluva lotta fun!” Now I didn’t come up with any of these original lines, but it sure felt good to use them. It made me remember when I first started my Boating Course in 2007 and how much I wanted to belong to this Squadron. I’d forgotten just how much PMPSS gives back to new boaters. This is truly an amazing bunch of people and I am honoured to be your Commander. On that note, I was happy to be involved with the New Graduates night on January 8th where 13 new graduates became the latest batch of squadron The Dissolution of YPSS members. You’ll also read here in the Quarterdeck about the amazing success we’ve anuary 15, 2014, at had once again by registering 21 new Boating the Royal Canadian Essentials students and 22 in the Advanced Legion of 504 Steele St in Training courses, Sailing and Electronic the Yukon, the Yukon Charting. Once again, your volunteers have Power & Sail Squadron was dissolved outdone themselves. and any assets distributed. Quoted from the Commander’s letter to the Jim Church, members of the Yukon Squadron: Commander J PMPSS Bridge Meetings are held 7pm every 3rd Tuesday of the month at Port Moody Secondary School—300 Albert Street, Port Moody., Room 214 All members welcome. “Over the last few months, the Commander of YPSS, Scott Widmeyer has had discussions with the CPS executive. He's been a boater since he was 18 years old. Bought his first boat then, and has had several ski boats since. Not just a water skier, he was also a great barefooter and knee-boarder as well and well known for his "hijinks" on the waters, doing crazy tricks and stunts all the time. He still has a ski boat named Goldmember that he purchased about 5 years ago. www.boatingcourses.ca Where do you mostly boat? Dave helped organize (with his wife Grace) an annual houseboat cruise for 10 years in a row to Lake Shasta, California. They switched from a ski boat to their first big boat in 1995, a 32ft Bayliner named “On a Bubble”, and now has a 43ft Bayliner named Big Booty. Dave was the PMPSS cruisemaster for about 4 years and was the first cruisemaster to take the Squadron up to Desolation Sound, and many other new destinations. He’s a savvy cruiser who also frequently charts his way to the Gulf or San Jaun Islands. He’s the reigning Raft Master on cruises or special events such as student cruises, Remembrance Day Service, or just a weekend getaway to Bedwell Bay. Electronic Charting – 12 registered Sailing – 10 registered. Why do you boat? Coming up on 20 years of PMPSS service, Dave thrives on helping others on their boats and on the water. Page 3 Notice to W hile at the Vancouver Boat Show last month, our intrepid reporter Zed (Zdenko Erceg) happened to meet someone from Environment Canada, with whom he had a good conversation about weather tools. The fellow introduced Zed to Vizaweb, and Zed has passed it on to PMPSS. Vizaweb is a website that displays the latest computer-model weather forecasts in graphical format. It is a very handy resource for boaters planning a trip. It is extremely detailed, showing wind flow, temperature or precipitation forecasts for up to 42 hours. You can animate it to see how the weather is likely to develop. It takes a few minutes to get the hang of it, but that time is well spent as you will find it a very valuable tool in your boating planning toolkit. (Remember it is only a model and should be interpreted with care!) 1) To access the site go to: http:// www.weatheroffice.gc.ca/vizaweb/ 2) When prompted for a user name and password use vizaweb and vizaweb 3) Click on the frequent users link. You will see an image of North America with some control buttons on the right hand side. Across the top are a number of drop down menus. Mariners The QUARTERDECK 4) Select: - Product 1: “LAM-2.5km_West” - Run 1: It defaults to the latest run given in the format YYYYMMDDZZ, which for the LAM is either 06Z or 18Z. If it is within 6 hours of the latest run all the data may not be in so you may need to choose the previous run. The ZZ is for Zulu time (Greenwich) which is 8 hours ahead of PST. - Domain 1: “LAM_ SOUTHWEST_ BC” (that covers most of the island and inner waters) or LAM_LOWER_ MAINLAND (which gives a more detailed view of our local waters) - Category 1: “WIND” - Images 1: “Sfc_Wind” - Hours 1: “all” The site will then display image 1, the first hour of the forecast. 5) Click the “>>” button in the Animation section on the right hand side to automatically show the 42 hours. 6) You can rewind, speed up, slow down the animation or go to a particular hour’s image. Have fun with this, it’s really good and informative. The link, these instructions and a pdf of more instructions and explanations is also on the web site www.portmoodypss.com (or www.cps-ecp.ca/ portmoody/ ) on the “Links” page. This year was an exceptional one for fireworks with Dan Greenwood on Boulder Island putting on a special show for Santa’s presence at Belcarra Park (Thanks Dan & Barry Wilson!), and the Winter Solstice on Friday December 21st, prompting more than the usual display from shoreline residents. Up to about 25 ships came from far & wide including Deep Cove & Burrard Yacht Club. Forster believes the plunge has become a huge event in the community. “It’s the community getting together to celebrate the start of the new year,” she said, noting it wouldn’t be possible without help from the City of Port Moody. Nancy Scott of the Pleasantside Community Association, which hosts the annual tradition off the Rocky Point Park pier, said about $1,000 was raised for the organization through registrations and refreshment sales. Pleasantside Community Association is a fundraiser for the Old Orchard Hall. Showing support with paper penguin hats (more available next year!): Dave Bruce, Dave Burrell, Steve Clark, Julie Ryder & Roni Clark. Specifically, the money goes toward the can-can dancers and a play group. 2 PMPSS members also took the plunge this year, and it was all caught on video: Glenn Richmond and Cher Zotek both jumped into the frigid waters from the 5 vessel raftup halfway down the pier. If you missed your chance to get wet, you only have to wait 11 months as the association intends to hold another Penguin Plunge to start 2015. Page 6 February 2014 Vancouver International Boat Show T Gary Coleman & Glen Anchor he 52nd annual boat show at BC Place and Granville Island had a few must-see attractions...did you see them? The legendary S.S. Minnow and castaway “Mary Ann Summers”, from the popular television sitcom Gilligan’s Island, was there. The Breakwater booth had a LEGO Certified Professional Builder who constructed a scaled replica of the Grand Prize Boat, a new Larson LSR series, made entirely from LEGO® and DUPLO® bricks. Of course CPS was there promoting safe boating, our boating courses, and membership. This attraction literally “popped out” at you. Boat Show Cruise B oating in January?! She has been a great little doggie and she says she is looking forward to a great summer on the boat. At only 1 1/2 years old, Peaches was rescued from a high kill shelter in California and sent to Dogway Dog Rescue in Mission, BC, which is where we found her. She is getting used to her new environment and really loves walks, cuddles and toys. s Page 10 He’s a Magic Man P MPSS Life Member Dennis Hewson was awarded the Carl Hemeon Trophy from his Society of American Magicians club for excellence in performing and service to the club for 2013. T is the season for a big bowl of hot’n hearty chowder. If you’re lucky enough to be able to boat in the cold winter months, this stew-like soup is a must-have to warm the “cockles of your heart” while onboard. There are numerous varieties and each has its own history and loyal following. True chowder lovers delight in their pursuit of the perfect chowder, from creamy white, to clear and briny, to tomato based. Once you’ve made your base, then add to it whatever floats your boat. Traditional Chowder Base Ingredients 3/4 Cup - chopped bacon or salt pork or crumbled sausage meat 3 Cups - chopped onions 5 Cups - liquid (chicken, fish, shrimp or clam stock) 3 Cups - diced potatoes, peel if desired Instructions 1 large or 2 small - bay leaf 2/3 Cup - crushed soda crackers or bread crumbs 2 Cups - heavy cream or evaporated milk Salt, fresh ground pepper, & hot sauce (if desired) to finish. Top Ocean Wise chefs compete head-to-head in Fry the bacon, pork Vancouver, Calgary and Toronto for the title of or sausage in a heavy 2014 Ocean Wise Chowder Chowdown Champion in each city. Taste all the delectable original dutch oven sized pot. chowders, paired with local craft beer, and vote If meat is very lean for your favourite, all in support of sustainable seafood. add 1 Tbsp of butter or oil. Add onions and bay leaf; stir, cover and lower heat. Cook about 10 minutes, until onions just begin to brown, stirring occasionally. Stir cracker/bread crumbs into the mixture then add liquid and the potatoes. Cover and simmer until potatoes can be crushed against the side of the pot with the back of a wooden spoon. Add the cream and heat without boiling. Adjust consistency to your liking. The base is usually composed of a smoky meat, onions, bread or cracker crumbs, potatoes, a liquid along with some seasonings, and can be used to make any type of chowder you like. Try smoked salmon with corn and fresh dill. Add chopped cooked clams, carrots, leeks & celery for a creamy New England clam chowder…adding tomatoes & juice makes it Manhattan style. Colorful vegetables (cooked and chopped broccoli, asparagus, corn, sweet peppers or a combination) make a yummy vegetable chowder. Make a fantastic seafood chowder by adding chunks of cooked fish and shellfish such as Dungenous crab & BC spot prawns. Pair it with a suitable wine or craft beer and savour the flavour. Further, as long as YPSS exists as a Yukon society, the Yukon organization cannot be a squadron within the CPS organization. The executive of YPSS is recommending winding up the affairs of YPSS as a society. This may make it possible to establish a Yukon squadron of CPS. Assets of the YPSS will be donated to a Yukon society according to the Societies Act and Regulations. It is hoped that some assets will be available in the national organization of CPS to establish a new Yukon squadron of CPS. At this time, none of the current or past executive members of the YPSS plan to establish a Yukon squadron. If any CPS members or Yukon boaters are interested in establishing a Yukon squadron of CPS, the current executive members will provide background information and contacts for this purpose.
