Historic Carousel Comes to the Farm
VOL. 24 • ISSUE 8 SEPTEMBER 2014
As we look forward to the 42nd fall season
of Bishop’s Pumpkin Farm, we can hardly
wait for your reaction to the new things
we are doing this year. We try to make
improvements or add something new
every year but there are certainly some
years that are more exciting than others.
Three years ago for instance, our project to
connect our farm to city utilities was very
expensive and necessary, but completely
invisible to you. That project facilitated the
construction of public restrooms the following year. You received them well, no doubt,
but still not very stimulating. Other years
have been more exciting, and 2014 will be
perhaps the best yet.
In these pages you will read about our
new carousel, a factory for chocolate chip
cookies, and some new animals to visit.
You will hear about our zip line and puppet show and Maria The Photo-Bombing
Cow. You will also hear about the return
of our daughter to the farm, which is most
exciting for my wife Ann and I; because
our farm would mean much less to us if it
wasn’t for the family time we spend in it.
Having said that, we always keep in mind
that if your family didn’t come out for a
visit each fall, we wouldn’t all be able to
work on our little farm. So thank you for
your support over the last 41 years. I hope
you enjoy reading about what’s in store for
this fall and we hope you can make it out
to harvest some memories in 2014.
— Wayne Bishop
Historic Carousel
Comes to the Farm
For many years we have thought
a good old fashioned carousel
would be a great attraction to
add to the farm. This past winter, we learned of one that had
been disassembled and stored
away in a barn in Southern California. When we learned more
about it, we knew this was a
carousel that needed a home in
order to carry on its rich history
of delighting families.
to manufacture parts for the
military. They would soon move
into building amusement rides
and would in fact build many
of the rides at Disneyland and
other amusement parks around
the world. A unique feature of
Arrow carousels were their cast
aluminum horses, which proved
to be much more practical than
the carved wooden horses of
older carousels.
Our carousel was built by Arrow
Development Company
in about 1958. Arrow was a
machine shop founded in 1945
The first home for our carousel
was at Santa’s Village in Scott’s
Valley, CA. The park opened in
the spring of 1957 but it is not
clear when the carousel was installed. It would run there until
Santa’s Village closed in 1979.
The carousel sat neglected on
the grounds until being rescued
for the first time in 1985.
It was purchased by the operators of Balboa Fun Zone of
Newport Beach, CA. The carousel was then restored from
the ground up by the son of
one of the founders of Arrow
Development. It was installed at
the Fun Zone in March of 1986
along with a Ferris Wheel as the
twin centerpieces of a complete
renewal. The
carousel would
entertain visitors and locals in
Newport Beach
until 2011 when
the property
owners there decided not to renew a lease held
by the operators
of the Fun Zone.
Meghan’s Return
By Meghan
About a year ago, I was writing
about my part-time return to the
farm. Now I am happy to be writing about my full-time return. It
didn’t take me more than a year of
working in the Bay Area to realize
that the small town kid in me just
couldn’t take the big city traffic
and lifestyle. While I loved my job
in produce brokering, I realized I
wasn’t cut out for that branch of
the agriculture tree. I was yearning for a job that allowed me to
use some creativity, one that was
rewarding; and most of all, one that
was closer to my family. Only one
job seemed to fit that bill, and that
was back here at the farm. So after
a couple months of consideration
and long talks about “is this best
for me and the farm?” we decided
it was. When I say we, I really mean
we, I had to convince my brother I
really wasn’t that bad to work with.
I grew up in a family work environment and while it’s not always easy,
it is rewarding, especially when you
do what we do.
I wish I could easily explain what I
do for a living to people who ask. I
could just say I work for my family’s business, but that doesn’t seem
to give it enough credit. Instead I
think I might go with “I work with
my parents and older brother to
help people harvest memories”.
That sounds a little more fun to me.
Anyway, I can’t really explain what
my job is here at the farm because

Babe’s Cookieactory Set to Open
My maternal grandmother never
quite reached five feet in height.
She was also the youngest of her
siblings and acquired the nickname
“Babe” early in life. Most of those
who knew her didn’t know her
real name. While I could fill these
pages with stories about her and
her kind spirit; this article is about
cookies. Grammie, as we called
her, had a certain cookie jar in a
certain spot in her kitchen for the
entire 45 years she and I shared
on this earth. When arriving at her
house to visit, I would always make
my way to that cookie jar before
long. Not once do I remember it
being empty; and almost always
it was filled with homemade
chocolate chip cookies. I don’t
remember ever seeing her make
those cookies. They just seemed
to always be there, even when our
visit was a surprise.
In creating Babe’s Cookieactory,
we kind of let our imaginations
run wild: What would Grammie’s
kitchen look like if she wanted to
make homemade chocolate chip
cookies not just for my family but
for all of you who visit our farm
in the fall? It would have to be
a factory of sorts, would it not?
It would need a giant mixer to
make the dough and how about a
neat looking old contraption that
deposits the dough onto the trays.
Huge ovens of course, because we
want to make them right in front
of you and serve them hot. And
the people working there would
embody Babe’s spirit. They will
be hard working, dressed for the
part; but will at the same time be
friendly and generous, wanting all
who visit to enjoy some of those
wonderful cookies.
Creating Babe’s Cookieactory has
been one of the most enjoyable
projects we have ever done here
on the farm. Everyone in the family
has contributed at least one idea to
it and those brainstorming sessions
have brought back so many memories of our beloved Grammie. A
building is not enough of a memorial to this small but mighty woman. But we hope that by serving
Babe’s chocolate chip cookies to
all who want them, she will know
that we have not forgotten her.

“Wine Down” at the
Golden Autumn Wine Festival
This year, for the first time in
Bishop’s history, we are staying
open November 1st and 2nd. Many
of you always ask us to stay open
just a little bit longer, so this year
we are going to give it a try! For
our last weekend of the season we
are partnering with United Way
and local wineries to host a tasting
event on Saturday, November 1st.
United Way is a non-profit organization benefitting local communities
throughout the United States in
a number of ways.Their mission
is to “improve lives by mobilizing
the caring power of communities
around the world to advance the
common good.” The organization’s
main goals are to improve education, help people achieve financial
stability, and to promote healthy
lives. We have begun working
closely with the local chapter,
Yuba-Sutter United Way, on organizing this event. We have several

Due to a situation a few years ago we have unfortunately
not allowed our visitors to bring their furry friends to our
farm. That will continue to be the case this year with one
exception, Sunday November 2nd. On this day, our visitors are permitted to bring their dogs of any shape, size,
or color!

The event will be held on Saturday,
November 1st from 11:00 am to
4:00 pm.Tickets will be $25 and
are available on our website, at
the Y-S United Way office, or at the
event. The tickets will be good for
a full tasting of wineries from the
northern Sierra wine regions. All
proceeds from the ticket sales will
go directly to United Way.
We look forward to having you all
come to the farm and “wine” down
our season with some good music
and delicious wines at the Golden
Autumn Wine Festival!
We are very excited to bring this
new feature to the farm this year.
As many of you know our bakery
is very popular, and this can lead
to some long lines. To make your
visit more enjoyable, we are going
to add on-line ordering.
All you need to do is log on to our
website, www.bishopspumpkinfarm.com. Follow the links until
you get to our shopping cart. Here
you will be able to add pies and
other delectable goodies.You can
pay and set up a pick up date here
at the farm.
So please take advantage of this
opportunity and put our ovens to
work!
At press time we are in the middle of organizing a special event
for “man’s best friend” that we will be calling Dog Dayz. We
hope to have different contests for you all to show off the cuteness and talents of your dogs, along with shows to enjoy some
very talented local herding dogs. We are also hoping to host an
adoption event to help get “furrever” homes for some very deserving dogs. Keep checking our Facebook, Instagram and website for
more information as we nail down the details of our furry event.
We hope you can come spend some lazy dayz with your doggie
friends on Sunday, November 2nd!
When you get here, you can be
assured your order will be ready
at whatever time you chose. We
will also have a special window for
you to pick up your order so you
won’t have to stand in a long line!

Want to follow Maria,
the Photo Bombing Cow?
By Meghan
People say happy cows come from California, but at our farm we have
“Photo Bombing cows come from Bishop’s Pumpkin Farm.” Our cow
Maria came to us as a sweet surprise. I’m sure some of you remember
my dad writing a story about the miracle baby that Maria had a few years
ago.You see, Maria came to us from a local dairy along with her twin
brother.Typically when a female calf is born as a twin to a male, she is
sterile, called a Free-Martin. Well, once in a great while this is not the case
and the female is fertile. So early one morning as my dad was coming
to the farm, he looked in the pasture and noticed a new calf. Low and
behold, Maria, who had spent some time with a bull about nine months
prior; was fertile and has since had a couple more healthy calves. Not
only has Maria become a great cow to have around the farm, she is also
an accomplished Photo Bomber! She just seems to get a little jealous
about other animals getting photographed and she pops right in the
frame! This seems like rewarding bad behavior but we have given Maria
her own space on the web. Go to Instagram and use the hashtag #Mariathecow to post your own photos if Maria bombs them. If you would
like to keep up with all of the other happenings around our farm all year
long, start following us on Instagram, @Bishopspumpkinfarm. We would
also love to see the pictures you take during your visit, use the hashtag
#bpf2014, so we can share in your great times at the farm. And I almost
forgot; if you are looking for Maria, she has her own corral in the middle
of the flower farm behind the big green barn. She believes in stopping
to smell the flowers as she makes her way through life!

Zip Line Even Better
Continued from cover
Despite protests from the public,
the carousel was disassembled in
September of that year and stored
in a barn near Lake Elsinore. Efforts were made to keep the carousel in Orange County but financing
fell through.
By Austin Bishop
Two years later, we were able to
arrange to be the second rescuers
in the life of our carousel. We have
begun a second restoration; painting, powder coating, and rewirfrom one gentleman who operated
it for a summer 50 years ago. We

ing. The carousel is now up and
running at Bishop’s Pumpkin Farm.
Restoration will continue as funding allows. We hope to repaint all
of the horses in the near future.
We don’t know if our carousel
has ever had a name but from this
point forward it shall be referred
to as Charlie’s Carousel. My fourth
granddaughter, Charlie Reese Bishop, was born just four days before
we were able to give her carousel
its first test run here on the farm.
Charlie’s three big sisters were the
test pilots along with the rest of
the family but Charlie wasn’t able
to ride just yet.
While we were certainly charmed
by the history of our carousel, we
really didn’t fully appreciate it until
we posted a photo and a couple of
sentences about it on our Facebook page. We had no idea that
so many of our own Facebook
family would have memories of
riding this very carousel at one of
its former homes. We even heard

NASPIG coming back for
another season of racing
When we started featuring pig races on the farm a number of
years ago, we had the good fortune of connecting with professional entertainer Donna Krewson aka Mother Goose aka Shirley
Duhgoose to be our race producer and announcer. Just before
press time we have learned that Donna has encountered some
health problems and will be retiring from pig racing. We will
certainly miss her and we do appreciate all she did to entertain
visitors over the years. She often told me that her time on the
farm was her happiest time of the year and she was very proud
especially of the pig show we do for school visitors.
Auditions are currently taking place for a new race announcer
and we are confident we will find a good one. NASPIG Racing
takes place every weekend throughout the season. Check the
calendar for race times.

Having been around farm animals all my life, I often underappreciate
what a unique experience the animals provide for our guests on the
farm. I was reminded last year when our newly arrived Clydesdale horse,
Clementine, was such a hit. It is fun to be able to get up close with such
a large and powerful but also gentle animal. Recently, a Texas Longhorn
Cow arrived at the farm. Late in July, she gave birth to a pretty heifer calf.
Our Facebook and Instagram friends have helped us name them Abilene
and Clover. Abilene is actually quite gentle and likes to be scratched
right behind those giant horns of hers. Unfortunately, she has a habit
of turning her head quite suddenly and one must be prepared to dodge
the horns. For that reason, we will not be allowing guests to pet Abilene
or Clover. They will be in the pasture visible from the BPF railroad or
you can get a closer look by walking down to the Flower Farm. Please,
however, resist the urge to try and pet…we want you to enjoy the Texas

Plan your visit to avoid
crowds and save $!
In forty-one harvest seasons, we
have failed to grow only in a
couple of years where we had
some bad weather. We believe it is
simply because we offer a unique
family experience and good food
that is worth telling your friends
about. We advertise very little but
word of mouth has been kind to
us. There is a downside to growth,
however. It is a fact that if we have
great weather on a weekend day in
mid or late October, the farm gets
very crowded. Lines for attractions
and food can be too long. If you
read online reviews, and we do,
the few negative reviews we have
almost always result from one of
those very busy days.
Now for the good news: First, we
are constantly working to accommodate more visitors. Our capacity increases every year and we will
continue to work hard on that. As
for your part, a little planning will
take you a long way. Our season is
43 days long this year and we are
only predicting oversize crowds on
6 days.
If I haven’t already given you
enough reasons to come out to the
farm on an off-peak day, this year
it will also save you a few dollars!
Parking and FunTix will cost
you less on the 37 days of our
season that are less congested.
In fact, depending on how you
purchase your FunTix, we have actually reduced the cost of some attractions from last season for what
we are calling Value Days. Please
check the calendar in this issue,
read the “plan your visit” page on
our website, and by all means give
us a call if you have any questions.

Speaking of challenges, the ongoing drought has certainly got us

Here’s what you can do:
• Come any other time. The
last two weekends in September,
the first weekend in October, or
the first weekend of November
should all be relatively uncongested. Any weekday is also a great
option as well. Check our hours
to see if you can make it out after
school or work.
• On any weekend, get out early in the day. We open at 9am
but usually don’t get too crowded
until around noon. On weekdays,
the mornings can be busy with
school visitors – so think about an
afternoon visit.
• Avoid lines at the bakery - order your baked goods on our
website for pickup when you are
ready to go home.
• Buy your FunTix for the attractions on our website or at any of
the four ticket booths when you
first arrive, then get your train and
10 PUMPKIN VINE LINE
carousel rides in before the lines
get long. Check the website for
special web-only offers on FunTix.
• Have lunch a little early or
better yet, have dessert first. Lines
for lunch at Pigadeli Square
are longest from about 12:00 to
1:30. Bakery lines don’t get long
until mid-afternoon. Think about
having a slice of pie or my favorite, Apple Cake, before noon. That
will hold you over nicely until
that Tri Tip sandwich or Corndog
lunch around 2:00.
• Seek out the tranquil places.
Wander past the big green barn
and the entrance to Porko Arena.
There is a big grassy picnic area
back there and right across the
railroad tracks is the Flower Farm.
You can pick your own bouquet
here or just spend some time
snapping photos of the kids in the
flowers. Many of the best visitor
photos we have seen come from
this area.
“See us for your medical, surgical, and optical eye care”
• Get on the free hayride to the
pumpkin fields early. It is the
prettiest out there in the morning light and most people put off
their trip to the field until right
before going home. Early in the
day, you will be able to walk right
on to a wagon. You can always
stash your pumpkins in the car

The Porcelain Doll pink pumpkin that
we planted as a trial last season was
very popular, selling out in the first
week of the season. We have planted
a full acre this year. $1.25 from the
sale of each of these pumpkins will be
donated to local and national breast
cancer charities.
hood memory of our irrigation
well going dry back in August
of 1976.
Fortunately, we were able at that
time to lower our pump deeper in
the well and get water again. The
current drought is more severe and
is compounded by the much larger
population of our state, increased
environmental uses for water, and
increased agricultural demands.
Fortunately for us, our irrigation
system is technologically more
advanced than it was 38 years ago.
We have a variable speed pump
and drip irrigation on some of our
fields. The water level in our well
has dropped alarmingly this summer but so far we have been able
to adjust our practices to keep
everything irrigated. We are keeping our fingers crossed for a wet
winter to come our way.
The 90 acres of pumpkins we
planted in 2014 is a big increase
over the 73 we planted last year.
We did run out early of some of the
specialty pumpkins we grow and
wanted to make sure that didn’t
happen again. We have planted
over 50 varieties of pumpkins,
gourds, and winter squash; giving
you the biggest selection imaginable. As of press time, we are seeing vigorous vine growth, the bees
are busy with pollination, and we
expect to have a great crop.
Believe me, we know that no matter what we do in terms of entertaining our guests, our pumpkin
fields are the basis for your visit.
We believe that most of you are
no more than a couple of generations removed from being farmers yourselves. You still have an
innate need to get out to the farm
and harvest something in the
fall. We are thrilled to be able to
provide that place for you. After
the months we spend preparing
for and growing a crop, it warms
our hearts to see the joy on faces
of the families who harvest it. I
often take time out of my busy fall
days to venture out in the fields
to watch you search out your idea
of the perfect pumpkin. So if you
see a somewhat overweight guy in
a Kawasaki Mule, possibly with a
camera, just sitting out in the field
– don’t report me to any authorities! I am just out there to harvest
some of my own memories, as you
pick yours.
