WHEATLAND, CA (MPG) - In an era of immediate gratification, it can be challenging to
get the whole family together for an experience outside of the comfort of home.
Bishop’s Pumpkin Farm is a unique destination in Northern California, boasting
over 90 acres of pumpkin fields, a three-acre
corn maze, and a zipline. The farm opened
on September 19th and will stay open until
November 1st.
With an expected attendance of over
baby-changing stations.
“Everybody has their own opinion on
what brings them back every year,” said
Bishop. “For some people, it’s the pie or the
tri-tip sandwich, or even the train ride.”
The farm’s first year of operations was in
1973 and featured a single pony that people could walk around themselves with, of
course, a few pumpkins in the field. Now,
the farm is a bona-fide attraction with a feeling akin to larger theme parks.

Johl, 64, of Yuba City, has been
appointed to the 13th District
Agricultural Association, YubaSutter Fair Board of Directors,
where he has served since 2001.
Johl has been a pest control advisor at Wilbur-Ellis Co. since 1992.
He was a pest control advisor at the
Puregro Company from 1975 to
1992. This position does not require
Senate confirmation and there is no
compensation. Johl is a Democrat.
Jennifer Matteoli, 41, of Yuba
City, has been appointed to the 13th
District Agricultural Association,
Yuba-Sutter Fair Board of
Directors. Matteoli has been a fitness instructor at In-Shape since
2008 and a partner at Matteoli
Brothers since 2000. She was a
lab manager at Pioneer Hi-Bred
from 1999 to 2000. Matteoli is the
Sutter County 4-H representative
at the Junior Livestock Auction
Committee. This position does not
require Senate confirmation and
there is no compensation. Matteoli
is a Republican.
Alice Munger, 40, of Yuba City,
has been appointed to the 13th
District Agricultural Association,
Yuba-Sutter Fair Board of
Directors, where she has served
since 2006. Munger has been an
agricultural science teacher at
Wheatland Union High School
since 2004 and a rice farmer since
2000. She is a member of the
California Agricultural Teachers’
Association and the Yuba-Sutter
Farm Bureau. This position does
not require Senate confirmation and
there is no compensation. Munger
is a Republican.
Joe Serger, 42, of Marysville, has
been appointed to the 13th District
Agricultural Association, YubaSutter Fair Board of Directors.
Serger has been a senior manager
at Miki Orchard Inc. since 2002.
He was farm manager at the Valley
View Packing Company from
1993 to 2002. Serger is a community leader for Browns Valley 4-H
and was a member of the California
Dried Plum Board from 2008 to
2012. This position does not require
Senate confirmation and there
is no compensation. Serger is a
Republican.

the opening of the farm to preparing a huge
Thanksgiving feast, except on a much larger
scale. On top of the traditional appeal of
the farm, this year will feature new menu
items at the bakery and deli on “Wacky
Wednesdays.” Also, every Friday in October
will end with a fireworks display starting at
7:45 p.m. One of best features of the farm
is the dedication to keeping a rustic feel
while providing modern conveniences such
as electric hand dryers in the bathrooms and

Autumn Moon Festival showcased
a part of Marysville’s history while
raising funds to benefit the renovation of the Chinese School building
at 226 First Street. in historic downtown Marysville. The event was
organized by the Friends of the Bok
Kai Temple.
The school was in operation from
the 1920s to the ‘70s and hosted 20
to 25 at a time. The building will
eventually be used as a meeting
space for the Chinese American community, and it will once again serve
as a school, with volunteers teaching the Mandarin and Cantonese
languages. Each patron of the festival was treated to a tour of the entire
Bok Kai temple and a catered meal at
the Hop Sing building, provided by
local Chinese restaurants. There was
also a raffle for gift baskets, books,
and other prizes, all benefitting the
Chinese School building.
George Chan, a member of Friends
of Bok Kai, led the tour of the Bok
Kai Temple. There are no regular tours of the temple. “We have
about two tours of the temple every
year, so this is a very special experience,” said Chan. Tour participants
were able to see the elaborate shrine
created in 1854, five years after
the first group of Chinese arrived
in California to work the gold
mines during the California Gold
Rush. The temple served the immigrant population and was the center
point of Marysville’s once bustling
Chinatown. Now, the temple is the
center point of Marysville’s annual

The legacy of Bishop’s Pumpkin Farm
extends through generations. Adrian Guzman,
a college student and assistant operations manager, has been coming to Bishop’s Pumpkin
Farm ever since he was a kid. “This is my
fourth season working here, but I’ve been coming to the pumpkin farm every year since I can
remember,” said Guzman. “Now that I work
here, I love walking around helping families
by taking their group pictures for them so that
they can all be in the photo. I love helping them
make those memories like the ones I have with
my own family.”
What Bishop’s Pumpkin Farm does best is to
give people a taste of a simpler time. Attractions
like the hayride down a country road and the sound
of farm animals, combined with an overall rustic aesthetic, awaken a feeling of nostalgia. “Our
attractions bring everyone together and gets them
in touch with their inner farmer,” Bishop said.
“Most people are only a few generations removed
from a farmer themselves, and this farm gives
them a taste of home even if they now live in a
town or a city.” H

We all make excuses from time
to time. Sometimes they are legitimate excuses and sometimes
they are not. “I have a ‘thing’ to
attend. I’m too tired after that day
at work. The baby is sick. My car
won’t start. I’m just swamped.
The dog is sick.” We have all
been there. But what about when
excuses begin to become a habit?
A way to talk yourself out of
exercise, eating well, getting
enough sleep, or being mentally healthy? Making excuses
can have a much bigger negative
impact on your life than you may
realize. When you give yourself
or someone else an excuse, you
are giving up responsibility and
personal growth.
When it comes to exercise,
so many people use the excuse
“I just don’t have time.” Yes,
schedules can get a bit busy. The
fact is, if something is important
enough to you, you will take the
time. You cannot make time, you
have to take that time for yourself. It doesn’t have to be a ton
of time, just 30 minutes to an
hour a day to get your heart rate
going. What about “I’m just way
too tired?” Oh really? Well, it’s
been proven that a great workout
gives you tons of energy! If you
don’t believe us, give it a try.
Have you been making
excuses about your diet? When
we use the term diet, we’re referring to having a diet, not being
ON a diet. We aren’t a fan of
“dieting,” but that’s a post for
another day. Do you find yourself making excuses for eating
poorly? Again, the most used
excuse here is “I don’t have
enough time to prepare a delicious, healthy meal to put on
the table, so I’ll grab something quick.” It’s all about being
prepared. Get the grocery shopping done on the weekends and
do a little bit of prep work in the
kitchen. That’s going to save you
lots of time during the week and
your quality of your food will be
much healthier.
These are just the tip of the iceberg of excuses. We all have our
go-to excuses. I challenge you
to write down any excuse you
find yourself making in the following week. Write it down, and
then under it, write out a way you
can crush that excuse. Only you
can take responsibility for your
actions. When you put the work
in, you can take all the credit! H

oldest continuing parade in California.
Ric Lim, president of the Chinese
Community, was on-site answering questions
and allowed a few people in the entryway of
the old building. Amidst several construction roadblocks brought on by decay, Lim
is optimistic about the building renovation.
“The face of the building has been restored,
as there were bricks falling off the building,”
Lim said. “Providing we earn enough money
from this fundraiser, we hope to replace the
roof of the school so we can start the interior
renovation.”
Marysville’s Historic Chinese School
deserves to be preserved as it represents a
tangible link between the past and the present. The school will not only sit as a memory
for the area’s Chinese community, but will
serve an important purpose in educating the
general public about the rich Chinese history
in the area and in all of California. H

Fall has arrived, and that means Wheatland
will be a hub for visitors during the upcoming Halloween season. People from all over the
region will come to Wheatland and visit Bishop’s
Pumpkin Farm. With that comes congested traffic, mainly on Highway 65 and especially on the
weekends leading up to October 31st.
At the time of this writing, City leaders,
Bishop’s Pumpkin Farm, and neighboring property owners have been working diligently to
assist in a new traffic plan to ease the congestion
on 4th and E Streets leading to Pumpkin Lane.
The new route will allow vehicles to travel to the
end of westbound Main Street and enter a new
private road that will connect to Pumpkin Lane.
Additionally, on peak days (mainly weekends)
there will be an additional exit route northbound
behind the Wheatland High School football field
that leads to Wheatland Road.

One of the few ways that
video games fail to resemble
traditional games like chess or
Monopoly is in their insistence
on control. Developers are often
reluctant to create a system of
rules and problems and let players do as they wish to solve
those problems within the confines of the game. Even so, the
ability of a game world to morph
because of the player’s actions is
called “emergent gameplay,” a
rare Holy Grail of game design.
The usual concept of emergent gameplay is too focused
upon giving the player as many
options as possible so that they
can combine the mechanics and
rules of the game in novel ways.
However, for gameplay to be
truly emergent, the game systems must be versatile enough
to permit the unexpected. In this
way, emergence goes beyond
simply giving a player a set of
tools and asking them to solve a
problem or situation. It encourages improvisation; a player with
time to observe and plan can use
the same or similar strategies
and tools every time. A player
caught by surprise is stuck in a
desperate situation, and therefore
must find a desperate answer on
the fly. Pressure of this kind is
what encourages the instant creativity of the players frantically
searching for a solution to an

(MGSV) works so well with
emergence by encouraging
players to sneak quietly into
enemy bases without any guidance. When a game revolves
around stealth, simply being
spotted counts as one of these
random unexpected events that
forces the player to think on
their feet. And, because MGSV
slows down time for a few seconds after the player is spotted,
it gives the player sufficient
time to come up with a creative
solution.
However, MGSV is emergent
only in one regard. It engages
emergence only on a physical
level; you can approach a level
however you want, but you usually cannot change the outcome
of the story. From a narrative
perspective, MGSV is strictly
linear.
That’s strange, because the
video game industry has been
doing narrative emergence—
player-affected changes on
story events and characters—
for a long time. It died out a bit
during the early 2000s, but since
The Walking Dead: The Game
in 2012, all the way up to The
Witcher 3 from earlier this year,
developers have been allowing
players to modify their character
and decisions in ways that allow
players to write their own story.
Unfortunately, The Walking
Dead’s gameplay consists only
of this choose-your-character
structure, and The Witcher 3’s
moment-to-moment gameplay is
almost entirely straightforward
with little effect on the world.
So the solution, then, is a combination of the two kinds of
emergence, a game that allows

onducting routine maintenance on your vehicle is necessary to maintain optimal performance and prevent costly repairs.
As colder weather approaches, and with it the potential for treacherous road conditions, giving certain areas of your car
special attention can also protect your safety.
“Getting your vehicle ready for winter while temperatures are still mild is a proactive approach to preventive maintenance that
helps ensure safety and reliability when severe winter weather strikes,” said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council.
The following tips will help you learn how to care for the systems and features most likely to affect your safety as winter
approaches. Learn about the benefits of regular vehicle care, maintenance and repair, and order a free copy of the council’s Car

Brakes
The brake system is a car’s most important safety system. A
faulty brake system may impede your ability to safely slow
your vehicle in inclement driving conditions or avoid an accident. Brakes sustain normal wear and eventually need to be
replaced for both performance and safety reasons. Ignoring
routine maintenance and letting brake pads wear too thin can
lead to costly rotor and drum replacement, in addition to
compromising your ability to execute a sudden stop safely.
n Have your complete brake system thoroughly inspected
annually and replace equipment as needed.
n If your car is pulling to the left or right, or if you hear odd
noises when you apply the brakes, you should have your
brakes inspected. Other warning signs include an illuminated brake warning light, brake grabbing, low pedal feel,
vibration, hard pedal feel and squealing.
n Don’t overlook the parking brake, which also may require
adjustment or replacement parts.
Wheels and Tires
When roads become wet or icy, the right wheels and tires can
help ensure you have the traction you need to maintain control.
Maintaining tire balance and wheel alignment reduces tire
wear and improves handling and fuel economy. Tire replacement is necessary if the tread depth is below the minimum
legal requirement, or if the sidewalls are severely cracked
or punctured. In addition, normal wear and road conditions
can take their toll on your car’s steering and suspension
system and disrupt the alignment, which in turn reduces
optimum handling.
n Use the “penny test” to check your tread; if you see Lincoln’s
head above the tread, you are ready for new tires.
n Have your car’s alignment checked at least annually or at
the first sign of improper handling or uneven wear.
n Check inflation pressure at least once a month (including
the spare) and once per week in the winter.
n Rotate and balance tires every 6,000 miles to avoid accelerated wear on shock absorbers and struts.
Battery
Your battery should be securely mounted, with connections
clean, tight and corrosion-free. If the battery is three years
old or more, it should be tested and replaced if necessary.
Headlights
Headlights play a major role in safe driving; the chances for
accidents increase if you can’t see or be seen. The lighting
system provides nighttime visibility, signals and alerts other
drivers, and supplies light for viewing instruments and the
vehicle’s interior.
n If there is any doubt about whether or not your headlights
should be on, turn them on.
n Keep headlights, tail lights and signal lights clean. External dirt and debris can dim operational lights, making it
difficult to be seen by others.
n Make sure your headlights are properly aimed. If they
aren’t, headlights blind other drivers and reduce your
ability to see the road.
n Don’t overdrive your headlights. You should be able
to stop inside the illuminated area; otherwise you are
creating a blind crash area in front of your vehicle.
n Replace dimming, rapidly blinking or non-functioning
lights immediately, but check first to ensure a loose or
faulty fuse isn’t the source of the problem.
Windshield Wipers
The wiper system keeps excessive water, snow and dirt
from building up on the windshield, maintaining clear
visibility. Many factors can accelerate the replacement
of wipers, including operating conditions, frequency of
use, material and type of wipers and weather.
n In general, replace blades every six months or when
cracked, cut, torn, streaking or chattering.
n Be aware that some vehicles have two washer fluid
reservoirs. Check levels monthly and use washer
fluid only; do not use water.
MAINTENANCE CHECKLIST
Whether you do it yourself or take your car to a professional
service technician, the Car Care Council recommends these
basic maintenance procedures to keep your vehicle operating
at its best:
1. Check all fluids, including engine oil, power steering,
brake and transmission, as well as windshield washer
solvent and antifreeze/coolant.
2. Check the hoses and belts for signs of damage or wear.
3. Check the battery and replace if necessary.
4. Check the brake system annually and have the
brake linings, rotors and drums inspected at each
oil change.
5. Inspect the exhaust system for leaks, damage
and broken supports or hangers if there is an unusual noise.
6. Check the heating, ventilating and air conditioning system, as proper heating and cooling
performance is critical for interior comfort and
for safety reasons such as defrosting.
7. Inspect the steering and suspension system
annually, including shock absorbers, struts and chassis
parts such as ball joints, tie rod ends and other related
components.
8. Check the tires, including tire pressure and tread.
Uneven wear indicates a need for wheel alignment. Tires
should also be checked for bulges and bald spots.
9. Check the wipers and lighting, including both interior
and exterior lighting, and replace worn wiper blades so
you can see clearly when driving during precipitation.

study. Blah, blah blah!

Have you ever stopped to
think that there are benefits to
being disorganized? You’ve
probably spent a lot of time
berating yourself for being disorganized, but there are actual
benefits to your disorder!
1. The disorganized
get more exercise.
All I ever wanted to be was a wife
and mom, so I majored in Home
Economics in college. One of the
courses was in cooking which I’ve
always loved to do. Part of the curriculum included a time and motion
study to track our steps while baking a cake.
“By being organized,” Miss
Cratzberry, the professor, told us;
“you will save valuable time and
energy to use on other activities in
your homes. Being aware of the
steps we take in the kitchen, preparing the family’s meals, is vital
to becoming efficient in the daily
tasks of homemaking.” I’m sure this
study was thought up by some efficiency expert like Miss Cratzberry
who never married and never had
kids. In fact, one of the lessons
in her course study was entitled.
Handling Servants. (Over the years,
that information has sure come in
handy for me!)
Back to the cake walk; I remember winning the prize for the most
steps taken! One quarter mile!
(Actually I didn’t win a prize as it
was supposed to be bad news for
me, but I decided to turn it around
in my 19-year-old mind into a good
thing.) Webster defines a time and
motion study as: a systematic observation, analysis, and measurement
of the separate steps in the performance of a specific job for the
purpose of establishing a standard
time for each performance, improving procedures, and increasing
productivity —called also motion
2. The disorganized don’t have to
pay to go to the gym.
Years later when I really was a
mom and wife, I never forgot the
results of my time and motion test.
One day it hit me while I was packing up stuff to take to the gym for
an hour workout, that with my gift
of taking too many steps in life, it
really was a benefit! Because of my
attention deficit disorganization, I
suddenly realized I was probably
getting in a full workout every day.
In fact, if I didn’t go to the gym, I’d
save the time, energy and money
that that activity took from my day.

3. Disorganized moms burn
more calories than organized
moms do.
Change your thinking,
change your body
I’m going to tell you a story that
ties in with my AHA moment, but
you’ll have to read all the way to
the end to see how it affects you if
you’re blessed with being disorganized. In a wonderful book called
You Are the Placebo by Dr. Joe
Dispenza, he tells of a 2007 study
at Harvard by some pretty impressive researchers: psychologist Alia
Crum, Ph.D., and Ellen Langer,
Ph. D. involving 84 hotel maids.
At the start of the study, the
maids all got physical check ups
and none of them knew that the
routine work they performed in
their jobs exceeded the Surgeon
General’s recommendation for a
healthy amount of daily exercise
(30 minutes). In fact, 67 percent of
the maids told the researchers that
they didn’t exercise regularly, and
37 percent said they didn’t get any
exercise.After this initial assessment, Crum and Langer divided
the maids into two groups. (Each
group was from a different hotel
so the maids wouldn’t benefit
from any talk at the water cooler
or the mini bar in room 741.) They
explained to the first group how
their activity related to the number of calories they burned and
told the women that just by doing
their jobs, they got more than
enough exercise. They didn’t give
any such information to the second
group.
One month later, the researchers found that the first group lost
an average of two pounds, lowered
their percentage of body fat, and
lowered their systolic blood pressure (that’s the top number that’s
the higher one) by an average of
10 points, even though they hadn’t
performed any additional exercise outside of work or changed
their eating habits in any way. The
other group, doing the same job as
the first, remained the same.
Just thinking a thought changed
the condition of the maids in group
one. Thought can change your
body, so start thinking this thought:
Disorganized moms burn more
calories than organized moms do.
Disorganized women exceed the
Surgeon Generals recommendation for exercise every day.
Just with this new knowledge,
I expect you to lose two pounds,
lower your systolic blood pressure
reading and lower the percentage of fat content in your body in
the next month! Remind yourself
every day of this new knowledge.
In fact, because I know you are
going to sit down in a secluded,
quiet room several times a day to
pee, take that time to tell yourself
this information and watch what
happens.

Dear Dave,
I started my own small bakery
from home two years ago, providing wedding and specialty
cakes. I just found out I’m pregnant, and while my husband and
I are really excited about the
baby, we’re worried about how
we’ll handle things after the
baby is here. We both work long
hours, but we don’t make a lot
of money. I made about $20,000
last year, and he currently makes
$35,000 working 60 to 70 hours
a week. Do you have any advice
for us now and after the baby
arrives?

Dear Lindsay,
Congratulations! You’re going
to be a mom, and you’re running
your own business.
I think more than anything you
just need some good business
planning and time management.
The good news is that you have
a little time on your hands before
the baby gets here. You can
begin scheduling things now and
laying out a plan. If you get into
a busy time — say around wedding season — you may want
to bring in a baby sitter or some
part-time help for your business.
I don’t think I would do daycare every day. You’re probably
not that busy 12 months out of
the year or even at the height of
some seasons yet.
Your husband also needs some
relief in the future. Working
those kinds of hours, and bringing home just $35,000 a year, is
no way to help support a family
the way he would like, I’m sure.
If his hours are going to back
down soon and his income is
going to go up, that’s one thing.
If not, he needs to look into getting some additional education,
making modifications to his current career or finding another
line of work. With some careful
and realistic planning on your
end, and him doing something to
make things better on his, a lot
of the stress will fall off.
Many people do the kind of
things we’re talking about, and it
ends up being an awesome experience. Just sit down together,
and talk it through. Help each
other out, and decide what it
will take to get where you want
to be as a family and with your
careers.

aren’t too good. He says he can’t
find time to study and work.
How do people do it?.

Dear Justin,
I’m glad you’re thinking
ahead, and trying to make your
college experience a successful one. It’s really just a matter
of using your time wisely. You
know how I always tell people
to budget their money? You can
do the same kind of thing with
your time.\There are 24 hours
in a day. Set aside seven for
sleep and that leaves 17 hours.
Let’s say three meals combined
takes three hours. You’ve got
14 hours left. If you’re in class
for four or five hours a day, that
still leaves you with about nine
hours. That’s plenty of time during the week to study hard, hang
out with friends a little and take
care of other things. Then, you
can work weekends, and have a
little down time to relax, study
more and run errands.
I worked 40 hours week in
college, and I still graduated in
four years with good grades.

Marysville Gold Sox
Release 2016 Schedule
MARYSVILLE, CA (MPG) - The Marysville Gold Sox
have released their 2016 schedule as part of the
Great West League.
The Gold Sox home slate consists of 30 games
at Colusa Casino Stadium and includes six each
against the Chico Heat, Lodi Crushers, Medford
Rogues, Portland Pickles, and Sacramento.
Marysville will also be on the road for 30 games
in 2016.
The Sox will host six Saturday games, five
Friday games, five Wednesday games, four
Thursday games, four Sunday games, three
Monday games, and three Tuesday games. The
club will have 10 off days, including a three-day
break for the All-Star Game that will be hosted by
Medford on July 26th. A four-team playoff will
begin on August 12th.
The annual Fan Fest, a free event, will be held
on June 1st. Game times and a full promotional
schedule will be released after the New Year and
season tickets, mini-plans, and group outings will
go on sale to the general public on November 1st.

Jerry Brown Didn’t do his
Homework on Suicide Bill

says vulnerable people will
die before their time now that
Governor Jerry Brown has
signed the “assisted suicide”
bill, ABX2-15.
“For all practical purposes,
this bill will open the door to
pressure the weak and vulnerable to die prematurely,” said
Randy Thomasson, president
of SaveCalifornia.com, which
promotes moral virtues for the
common good, and which lobbied against the bill. “This is
no victory, but a horrific defeat
for a just and civilized society.
People who otherwise could
have fought to live or at least
extended their lives will be
‘helped’ to die early, and that’s
shameful, even criminal. This
will give California an awful
legacy. The governor didn’t do
his homework. He misstates,
for example, that it’s a crime to
commit suicide in California,
which is simply not true.
“Jerry Brown overlooked
that no witness at death, no
requirement to self-administer, permitting forgery of a final
attestation form, and a false
cause of death on the death
certificate sets up weak and vulnerable Californians to be killed
off. It’s true that this bill sets up
the perfect crime.”
• No witness at death: Nowhere
in ABX2-15 is a witness
required when the lethal
drug is administered. How
would you know if the person resisted or if it was really
their choice to die that day?
• No requirement to self-administer: The bill suggests but
never requires self-administration of the lethal drug.
Elder abuse, already a huge
problem, would be exacerbated by ABX2-15, which
permits a legal heir—
a person with a financial
self-interest—to help request
and even administer the lethal
drug. Section 443.1(b) says
“the qualified individual may
choose to self-administer”;
likewise, Section 443.1(i)
says “may self-administer,” but nowhere in the bill
does it say “must” or “shall”
self-administer, thus another
person could administer the
lethal dose. If the prescribed
patient hesitates or delays,
what’s to stop someone from
dissolving the water-soluble drug and giving it to the
unsuspecting patient to drink?
Predators, even within the
family, would be virtually
exempt from law enforcement because no witness is
required and the bill protects
them from virtually all civil
liability and criminal prosecution. For without a witness,
how would anyone know
whether a crime was committed or if there was resistance
or a struggle?
• Permitting forgery of a final
attestation form: The final
attestation form within 48
hours prior to ingesting a
lethal dose cannot be verified
or enforced, so how can it be
known whether the now-dead
individual actually filled out
the final form? And where is
the penalty if the form wasn’t
even turned in? There is no
guarantee that the person truly
wanted to die that day; the bill
provides no supervision or
consequences for this step.
• False cause of death on death
certificate: This bill also
promotes medical deception by prohibiting doctors
from writing “suicide” or
even “physician-assisted
suicide” on the death certificate as the cause of death.
Likewise, ABX2-15 prohibits
law enforcement from saying
“homicide” or “elder abuse”
occurred, even if there was
overwhelming evidence. It
sets up the perfect crime. As
Margaret Dore of Choice is
an Illusion explains on page
18 of her analysis: “With the
death required to be treated
as ‘Natural’ simply because
the act was used, a perpetrator who tricked the patient
into taking the lethal dose, or
who administered the lethal
dose to the patient while he
or she was asleep, or who
directly killed the patient over
the patient’s vehement objection, cannot be convicted
of murder. The Medical
Examiner, the Coroner and
the Prosecutor must certify
the death as ‘Natural.’”
“It’s frightening how this bill
would open the door for the
state government, HMOs, and
hospitals to steer people toward
suicide,” Thomasson said. “In
Oregon, the state has sent letters that both reject medical
treatment and suggest suicide.
Is the California bill any different when it permits insurers to
reject medical treatment in one
letter and suggest suicide in a
second letter?
“ABX2-15 exempts doctors who prescribe these poison
pills from any and all liability. Because ‘undue influence’
isn't defined in the bill, blanket
immunity for physicians and
nurses will result in unreported
coercion that ushers in early
deaths, which will save hospitals and insurance companies
money. Because some patients
are viewed as ‘cheaper dead
than alive.’
“With this terrible suicide bill
needlessly signed, California is
now telling young people that
sometimes suicide is an answer
to life’s problems,” Thomasson
concluded. “Pandora’s Box
is open. Concerned families should make plans now to
never allow sick family members to be alone in the hospital,
and to rethink whether convalescent homes and hospices are
safer elsewhere, in states that
don’t promote suicide, such as
Nevada and Arizona.”
