Sixth grader Sarah Malone, a student at Campbell Middle School, was
judged the “best” of the 60 plus entries who competed in Downtown
Campbell Business Association’s recent First Friday art contest. The
prize really made her pleased because it was a gift certificate for Art
Beat in downtown Campbell.

The Downtown Campbell
Business Association is looking
for vendors for their third annual
Big Bands and BBB event on
Saturday, July 17.
Booth space is available for
vendors of packaged food and
outdoor living related products,
including
bottled
barbecue
sauces, rubs or spices; utensils
such as knives, spits and racks…
outdoor living products including
patio
furniture,
barbecues,
umbrellas.
Although packaged food can
be sold, food to be consumed at
the festival will be available from
selected barbecue vendors.
The afternoon-early evening
event will situate vendors of
dry goods merchandise right
on Campbell Avenue, near the
center of the activity, which will
include barbecue competition,
seating for patrons, and a variety
of appropriate music.
Vendor space (10’x10’) will
be available for a fee and those
interested should contact Dana

oppose
Prop
16
This week the County of
Santa Clara County Board of
Supervisors adopted a resolution
to express its opposition to
Proposition 16 on the June ballot.
This measure would enact
a constitutional amendment to
require local governments to
secure two-thirds voter approval
before they can use public funds
to start up electricity service,
expand electricity service into
a new territory, or implement a
Community Choice Aggregation
(CCA). If enacted, Proposition 16
would severely impede the ability
of California’s local governments
to create publicly owned and
operated utilities by mandating a
difficult to achieve vote threshold. As a result, public power options
for local government would be
severely restricted. “The
problem
with
Proposition 16 is that it actually
makes it more difficult for
communities to choose clean
energy options,” said Supervisor
Ken Yeager, President of the
County of Santa Clara Board of
Supervisors. “Although Santa
Clara County is not planning
to operate a municipal utility,
it is important to preserve the
flexibility to do so, if it is in the
best interest of our community.”
Talking to EJ Peaker on the phone was like talking to a high school
classmate that you hadn’t seen for ages (plus she’s a lot younger than
I am).

Theater’s
latest
production
Hello
Dolly(opening
this
Saturday).
EJ had an ingénue
part in the 1969
movie, which starred
Barbara Streisand and
was directed by Gene
Kelly (yes, that Gene
EJ Peaker as Minnie Fay in the movie Hello Dolly Kelly—the dancer).
She literally bubbled over when she talked how she was persuaded
to leave Broadway and come to Hollywood and how she loved it.
She performed in a lot of television shows—and it’s interesting to
note that she did everything from drama (Rockford Files) to comedy
(Gilligan’s Island) to action (Charlie’s Angels) to mystery (Streets of
San Francisco). She did romance (Love, American Style) and thriller
(Rod Serling’s Night Gallery) and even did game shows (Match Game).
She told me how Dolly director Gene Kelly choreographed a scene
in the hat shop that she danced in and how much fun it was, only to
have it end up on the cutting room floor
In more recent years, it’s raising her son David on which she’s
focused a lot of her attention. Now 20, she says David dances, works
as a disk jockey and last week was going to paddle down the Kern
River with friends. He’ll be along for this show, too. (She recently lost
her husband, Steve.)
One of the things she’s very serious about is choosing nominees for
the Motion Picture Academy’s annual selections. She really carefully
considers who should get top honors every year for everyone from
Best Actor to the Best Sound.
She reminisces about how she once went on the tonight show and
when asked where she came from, she replied Pueblo, Colorado and
the interviewer had never heard of it. (Her bio, which we accessed
on-line, doesn’t mention Pueblo and reports she only has a daughter!)
Will she go back to Broadway? She’s pondered the idea, but hasn’t
made a decision.
The reason that South Bay Musical Theatre invited EJ to come to
the Hello Dolly opening Saturday is because she was Minnie Fay in
that 1969 production and thought she’d enjoy meeting the cast.
She told me, however, that she wants a photo with me and my
daughter (Bobbie Howe, music director for the show). I’m not going
to object.

Californians generally receive electricity service from one of three
types of providers – investor-owned utilities (IOU), local publicly
owned (municipal) utilities, and electric service providers (ESP). IOUs, such as Pacific Gas and Electric, have a defined geographic area
in which they are legally required to serve customers. A municipal
utility is a local governmental entity that provides electricity services
to residents and businesses in its local area (e.g., the City of Palo Alto
Utilities). ESPs provide retail electricity service to customers that
have chosen not to receive services from the utility that serves their
area. ESPs deliver electricity through the local utility’s transmission
and distribution systems. Under a fourth option, a Community
Choice Aggregation, cities and counties, or a combination of the two,
can arrange to provide electricity within their jurisdiction through a
contract with an electricity provider other than the IOU that would
otherwise serve that local area. “I oppose Proposition 16 as a matter of principle,” said Supervisor
Don Gage, District 1. “We need to preserve the flexibility to explore
all electricity delivery options for the Valley Medical Center or other
24-hour facilities we operate.”

Police Report
Fire Calls
A laptop was taken from an office on Cherry Lane over a weekend.
Police contacted a 40 year old man regarding a burglary on S. McGlincy
Lane and he confessed to it.
A 16 year old who was observed prowling in a parking lot on
Winchester Blvd. also attempted to steal a bicycle but was stopped by
maintenance personnel and held for police.
When caught shoplifting this 39 year old was also found to be in
possession of methamphetamine. He was booked.
A statue was taken from a backyard on Audrey.
It was after 2 a.m. when a 30year old man was stopped at San
Tomas Expressway and Campbell Avenue for a vehicle code violation.
A records check revealed that he had a no bail probation violation
warrant. As he was under the influence he was booked into jail.
A storage locker on Curtner Avenue was cut and property was
removed.
When a man left his vehicle parked at a hotel on W. Hamilton
Avenue, he left the keys in it. The vehicle was missing when he
returned.
When a man grabbed merchandise and exited a store on E. Hamilton
Avenue, he attempted to flee in his vehicle. In his flight, he broadsided
an SUV and fled on foot. Police apprehended him.
A window was pried open at a residence on Warwick. Although the
property was ransacked, it is unknown what is missing.
Stopped on Winchester Blvd., this 50 year old man was under the
influence of a controlled substance and arrested. A search revealed
methamphetamine in his pocket. He was booked.
A GPS was taken from a 2006 Dodge on Almarida after a window
was smashed.
A group of 15+ juveniles were drinking on Millich Dr. One girl who
refused to tell officers where she lived or her parents’ phone number
was booked into juvenile hall. Two others were cited and released to
their parents.
Shortly after midnight on Saturday this 61 year old woman was
seen driving into a curb three times as she was trying to park her
vehicle. She was stopped and determined to be DUI and arrested.
Leaving keys in the car while he carried items into his home on
Gale Drive, this man found his car gone when he returned.
A woman on N. Central Avenue listed several pieces of jewelry
on Craigs List. She received a
fraudulent email from Paypal
stating that payment had been
received. She shipped the items,
only to discover that no money
had been deposited into her
Paypal account.

In the theater world, I note
that Ed Asner is coming for only
four days to San Jose Rep in
downtown San Jose as FDR. That
ought to be a super one-man show.
Prior to that, the Rep is doing The
Marvelous Wonderettes, which
sounds very much like one of the
several Taffetta shows we’ve seen
at Tabard Theatre.
--------I laughed so hard at one point
that I almost fell off my chair.
Santa Clara Players shows are
staged in a very small intimate
theater. Some of their shows are
better than others, but I have a
season ticket and I don’t always
know what I’m going to be
seeing.
Flaming Idiots was the title
of the show, but that didn’t give
me a clue. In the opening scene
there was no hint of how funny
the rest of the show was going to
get, after all, two former postal
workers buying a restaurant
didn’t have that much of a theme,
did it? Well, it did (however, not
because they were postal workers,
although the show did manage to
give a couple of smart smacks to
that occupation), but just because
of who they were.
Dana Morgan absolutely
was born to her part as Carol,
whose innocence was sometimes
a little annoying, but whose
ability to stay grounded in
spite of the happenings around
her, contributed greatly to my
enjoyment.
Ron Evans, her co-player,
was sometimes straight man to
her and sometimes just delightful
on his own. The rest of the cast
played the show a little over-thetop but while you knew it was not
intended to be a “true” portrayal
of reality, you could thoroughly
enjoy the action. And their humor
was just delightful. Go see it if

these days that if you miss a day,
you’re likely to miss a lot.

Bayou, coming next weekend,
has traditionally been a really
celebration of warm weather--warm weather? Gosh we used
to worry about it getting too
hot. Lately, we’ve run the heater
almost daily and we don’t even
know if the air conditioning
works!

American Legion will be
gathering at Post 99 on Saturday
evening, June 5, for a dinner and
evening of information from the
members on how they are able to
contribute to veterans in multiple
ways.
The catered dinner will
include a social hour at 5 p.m.,
6 p.m. dinner and 7:30 program
presentations. Reservations are
due by June 1 and suggested
donation is $100. These guys
really need our support in order to

intriguing. It’s called Opus and

27 and is staged at the Mtn. View
Center for the Performing Arts.

Striped sea bass gutted, scaled about 1- 1 ¼ pound
Cloves garlic. Thinly sliced
Sprigs of thyme
Directions:
Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Place the egg whites into a
bowl and whisk until you reach stiff peaks. Add the salt in and mix
well, this should feel like wet sand. Put aside for later use. Take
your sheet pan and cover it with tinfoil. This will help you with
the dishes later as the salt/egg mixture sticks to everything. Take
your Bass and place the garlic and thyme into the belly. Put a thin
layer of the salt/egg mixture onto the sheet pan covered with tinfoil.
This should be a little bigger than the fish. Place the fish on top
of the egg/salt mixture. Cover the fish with about one inch of the
remaining egg/salt mixture leaving the head and tail exposed. You
may have some left over. Place in the 400 degree oven for about
20 minutes. The salt should be lightly browned. Remove from the
oven. For service cut the salt crust down the middle the long way.
You want to just cut into it enough to remove the crust. Do not cut
into the fish. Once the top layer of salt is removed take the skin off
of the fish. Remove the filets and serve. Enjoy!
Garnish: I normally serve this with a light tasting Extra Virgin Olive
Oil and potatoes. You can look at my other recipes on my website
www.ChefTomm.com for a potato or starch recipes if you want to
add some sides.
Chefs Note: This is my favorite way to eat fish! I have used several
types of whole fish for this. I hope you enjoy it! I also have more

NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING AND REVIEW
Notice is hereby given that the Planning Commission of the City of Campbell has set the hour of
7:30 p.m., or shortly thereafter, on Tuesday, May 25, 2010, in the City Hall Council Chambers, 70
North First Street, Campbell, California, for a Public Hearing to consider the following proposed
project(s):
1.
Continued Public Hearing (from the Planning Commission meeting of April 27) to consider
the application of Ms. Jennifer Skillings, on behalf of Santa Clara Development, for a Minor
Modification (PLN2009-132) to a Planned Development Permit (PLN2007-173) to modify the
previously approved design to allow for incorporation of roof decks on properties located at
651, 655 & 671 W. Hamilton Avenue in a C-PD (Condominium/Planned Development) Zoning
District. A Mitigated Negative Declaration was approved with the original project.
2.
Public Hearing to consider the application of Ailan Tran and Vinh Le for a Conditional Use Permit
(PLN2009-122) incorporating Site and Architectural Review Permit approval. to establish a
new dental office in an existing two-story office building, construct a 500 square foot first-story
addition and remodel the exterior of the building on property owned by E. William & Charlotte
Daerksen located at 1374 E. Hamilton Avenue in a P-O (Professional Office) Zoning District.
Staff is recommending that this project be deemed Categorically Exempt under CEQA.

to raising only those issues you or someone else raised at the Public Hearing described in this
notice, or in written correspondence delivered to the City of Campbell Planning Commission prior
