President’’s Message
by Bob Foster
““He moved like a dancer, which is not surprising; a horse is a beautiful
animal, but it is perhaps most remarkable because it moves as if it
always hears music.”” ȸ Mark Helprin, Winter's Tale
Okay, without turning in my Cowboy card, I do admit I like to read
inspirational quotes. When I read this quote by Mark Helprin, my mind
suddenly went back to a time just after I had graduated from high
school. On this particular day, two friends and I had horse camped in
the wash area in the Santa Clarita Valley. We woke to the sounds of chains clanging. Yes, there they
went, all three of our horses, ““dancing”” away from us. Two of the horses had untied themselves and
decided to get breakfast elsewhere, and my horse, which was hobbled, went with them. It was the chain
from her hobbles that woke us.
Of course we had a good laugh……after we caught them.
As the summer approaches, ETI will be in full throttle and offers so many opportunities to truly enjoy your
horse or mule. Come out and take advantage of ETI National or any one of our ETI Corrals if you would
like to participate in any one of the horse shows, trail trials, gymkhanas, wagon drives and/or cart driving.
Please refer to our website at www.etinational.com for our yearly calendar.
ETI National offers its annual Jim Hester ride next month. This is a weekend horse camp with guided
rides to be held on April. 25 - 27. This ride is being filled now. See the application for this ride on our
website.
There is so much work, time and effort into making ETI work. From the
corral level to National, no one is paid which is even more fantastic
considering all that ETI provides. I don’’t doubt that the amount of
volunteer hours is easily in the thousands. From the bottom of my heart, I
want to thank every member who has stepped up to make ETI one of the
best horse/mule organizations in the United States. I also would like to
send out an open invitation to everyone not a member to check out ETI
and see if you would like to join our family.

Mounted Assistance Unit (MAU) Program Update
ETI
MAU
At the risk of repeating myself, I will
restate the objectives of MAU here
because we continue to have new
readers of the ETI newsletter, and
although this may be old hat for many of you, I need
to use this space to educate our new readers as well as
our seasoned readers.
As I understand it, MAU was created to assist local
jurisdictions to patrol and report trail problems. Over
time, this has evolved into MAU providing emergency
assistance to trail users who may be having problems
and to provide assistance in trail maintenance and
cleanup. The MAU also gets requests to assist on
major rides to work as outriders to help with novice
riders.
To this end, MAU members go through training in CRP,
First Aid, horsemanship, jurisdiction policies, and
procedures. Each MAU establishes a training schedule
for its members to improve their skill set.
If any of the above strikes a chord with you, you might
wish to contact one of the existing MAUs or contact me
to see if you could start an MAU in your area.
Need Your
Help With
Trail Signs
The rangers would
like to get all missing and damaged trail
signage fixed. So, anytime you are out
riding or hiking in the Angeles National
forest and notice missing or damaged
trail signs or locations where signage is
needed, please let Dennis Merkel,
CPRP, FPO, know by either emailing
([email protected]) or calling (818
899-1900, Ext 229) him. Also, per
Randy Hammock, ““taking a photo with
your cell phone with geotagging turned
on will not only show the sign but will
also contain location where the photo
was taken. This will reduce any misunderstanding.”” Thanks for your help!

My Memories of Bill
There is one outstanding rule in doing wagon trains.
Whether your problem is needing cooking oil, patching a
wagon so it can make it into camp, or helping with a sick
horse or mule, you learn to depend on one another. I
think this is why Corral 14 has become a family to me
more than just a club. There is a closer bond woven in
the fabric of our group as the miles surrender to the
turning of the wheels. So, when we lose a member of
our family, we all feel the pain of lose.
Bill Burt was a long time member of our wagon family. I
don't have any number to give you, but Bill along with his
long time companion and swamper Irene Sylvester (Bill
always referred to her as Miss Irene) were part of the
core group that has helped keep the wagon train alive.
by Mary Jo Steele, Corral 14
Bill was a tough, stoic old style fella. He was kind to his
animals and always there with a helping hand when
needed. He was one who our pioneer ancestors would
have claimed as their own.
I'm certain anyone who has wagon trained with Bill will
have their own memories that will be shared around the
campfires for a long time to come.
Bill, we were proud to know you, and I hope heaven has
wagon trains!
Burt at Furnace Creek Inn, Death Valley Drive
Burt, Irene, Molly & Red
Burt and Irene, Death Valley Drive
Bill was always up for an adventure be it with a team and
wagon or a 5th wheel RV trailer. Norm and I have
traveled with them for more miles than I care to count.
When traveling together, we would ask him where he
wanted to stop, etc……Bill’’s refrain was always "whatever
you want to do; we'll just follow you".
On the wagon trains, often they were right behind us.
Norm would ask me how Bill was doing. I would look
back and report "Well, Bill is napping (lines slack in his
hands), and Miss Irene is reading.”” His two big mules
Molly and Red just followed along, stopping if we did and
waking Bill up with a start.
One of the funniest stories I remember is when we went
to a dance after a wagon train. Now remember Bill could
not hear at all. Bill asked Miss Irene if she wanted to
dance. Irene said "Bill, you can't hear the music." He
responded with "that's ok, Miss Irene, I can feel the beat
through my feet." and dance they did!

Connie Austin - A Cornerstone for the Bonelli MAU
Retires after almost 20 years of Service
by Mindy Miracle
A cornerstone for the Bonelli MAU Retires after
almost 20 years of dedicated service.
With heavy hearts but
multitudes of memories
and infinite thanks, the
Bonelli Park Mounted
Assistance Unit (Bonelli
MAU) wishes happy
trails to one of their
long-time
members
and contributor of
hundreds of volunteer
hours over the past
twenty years, Connie
Austin.
Connie Austin was
raised a farm girl and is
a
de vo ted
w i fe,
mother, grandmother,
educator, administrator, nurturer of people and animals, and an inspiration to
all she meets. Raised on a 150 acre Shetland Pony Farm
in the Rowland Heights/Diamond Bar/La Puente area,
Connie grew up one of five siblings on the Far Hills Ranch
on Brea
Canyon Cutoff. Anyone growing up in the
area in the 50s-60s-70s may well remember visiting the
ranch on the weekends to play with ponies. The farm
also included horses, cattle, sheep, pigs, and a working
dairy farm. Connie developed her love of animals, of
people, and of serving others at a very young age.
Watching and assisting in the care of animals growing
up, Connie always knew she wanted to be a nurse. She
attended Mt. San Antonio College, earning her Associate
of Science (AS) Degree in pre-nursing studies then went
on to obtain her Bachelor of Science in Registered
Nursing from Point Loma Nazarene University and her RN
credentials.
After nursing for a few years, Connie
returned to college, this time to Cal State University, Los
Angeles (CSULA), for her Masters of Arts (MA) in
Education and her Masters in Science (MS) in Nursing
Education. Thus began a twenty-five year career as an
Associate Professor in Nursing at Azusa Pacific University
(APU). In 2006, Connie left APU to become the Dean of
Health Sciences and Nursing at Rio Hondo College.
During her time at APU, Connie also raised two children,
a son, Mark, and a daughter, Lisa. She also began lookPage 16
ing for volunteer opportunities to give back even more to
the community in which she lived. Connie joined the
Bonelli MAU in 1994, after reading an article about the
unit in a local newspaper. She attended a monthly meeting to learn more about the volunteer opportunity,
became committed, and over the next twenty years
made substantial contributions to the unit. Connie first
certified in October 1995 on Autumn, a registered
American Standardbred horse originally trained for cart
racing. Connie owned Autumn for 28 years, since
Autumn was a three year old until Autumn’’s passing in
2012 at the age of 31. Autumn was a trusted and able
equine companion, ridden and serving in the MAU until
her death. She could just as readily be seen patrolling
the Boy Scout Jamboree or Jazz Festival at Bonelli Park
as packing around the grandkids.
In addition to certifying on Autumn, Connie owns and
certified on three additional mounts. Connie is certified
on a now 18 year old double-registered palomino quarter
horse mare, Nugget, and on Nugget’’s baby, a 2006
AQHA registered horse, Nutmeg. Connie is most recently
certified on her appropriately-named mare ““Saving
Grace,”” a now approximately 18 year old horse that
Connie and her husband, Mike Miller, rescued in 2010.
Regular monthly patrols, participation in quarterly rides,
camping outings, and patrolling major events at Bonelli
Park, still wasn’’t enough for Connie. She has also held
several volunteer positions of responsibility within the
Bonelli MAU over the years. Serving in the role of
President for two terms spanning five years and the role
of secretary for three years, Connie had the opportunity
to influence the culture, the growth, and the direction of
the unit. When the opportunity arose ten years ago,
Connie stepped up and volunteered as an evaluator,
leading monthly member trainings, ensuring member
safety, and certifying horse/rider teams.
If all this were not enough, Connie also volunteered with
the Los Angeles County Sheriff Equestrian Volunteer on
Patrol, City of Industry, as both a member and an
evaluator, for more than 10 years while also serving and
volunteering with Bonelli MAU. She earned the LA Sheriff
Department Certificate of Equestrian Excellence in
December 2003. Connie has also been a member of ETI
throughout the past 20 years.
Connie met her husband, Mike Miller, one night while
dancing at Montanas. They are celebrating their fifth
anniversary this month. Mike didn’’t know much about
horses when he met Connie except for participating in a

led dude ranch trail ride or two. Not only did Mike fall in
love with Connie, but he got roped into the equestrian
lifestyle as well. Mike joined the Bonelli MAU and
certified on Saving Grace. Being a truck driver by trade,
Mike also leads our Bonelli MAU annual trailer rodeo,
whereby our members learn safety, inspection, and
driving techniques related to our trucks and horse
trailers. Mike and Connie sold their horse property in
Covina last year and moved to a 2.5 acre ranch in Perris,
CA.
Connie will best be remembered for the impact she has
had on people’’s lives, people from within our unit, other
MAU units, and the public in general. She is the
consummate horsewoman. On one memorable Big Bear
camping outing, it started to rain. Connie unpacked her
poncho and put it on, never losing control of the reins or
of her horse. Unbeknownst to her, a fellow MAU
member videotaped the entire episode, a testament to
her skill and professionalism. Connie is also well known
in our unit for her uncanny sense of direction. When you
trail ride with ““GPS by Connie”” you will most certainly
never get lost. On one outing, a member who is
““directionally-challenged”” kept asking Connie, ““Are you
sure you know where we are going? Are you sure we
are not lost?”” Sure enough, the riders made it back
safely, and the member will always be grateful for the
amount of confidence she built due to Connie’’s directional influence.
friendship.
We wish you the best, Connie and Mike...From all of us
at the Bonelli MAU!
MAU members Bob Hardcastle, Rose Dickinson, Mike Miller,
Connie Austin, Michelle Campbell, Dave O’’Brien, and Denise
Andre, patrolling the Boy Scout Jamboree in 2010
Connie is grateful for the many opportunities to provide
““PR on horseback”” over the years, having the ability to
stop and allow the public to get to know our horses and
educate them on the equestrian lifestyle. She is grateful
for the opportunity to positively influence and encourage
fellow MAU members in trainings and evaluations. She is
thankful that she did not encounter any huge incidents in
the hundreds of volunteer hours she served LA County,
and she is ““honored and blessed by all the fantastic
people she has met and befriended through the years.””
Connie, we are honored and blessed as well.
In preparing for this article Connie commented, ““Once a
teacher, always a teacher!”” She further commented, ““I
have met so many wonderful people……Lifelong friends.
The best part of MAU is the meetings, the camping, and
the like-minded friends that are dedicated horse people
and enjoy the same things I do.”” Although Connie is
closing her chapter in Bonelli MAU, she is looking forward
to volunteer opportunities near her new home in Perris,
CA, and whatever the next chapter of her life holds in
store. Connie, you will always have our respect and

Why I Love the Jr. Ambassadors’’ Program
by Megan Kitcko, 2013——2014 1st Junior Miss
As Junior Ambassadors, we all work pretty hard during Convention and horse shows. We all really enjoy
helping and watching people show their horses as much as riding in them. The other part of the Jr.
Ambassador program is to get together and make friendships. We do many fun things and raise money for
ETI and raise awareness for the horse trails. In December, we had a sleepover and decorated cakes to
auction at the ETI Christmas Party. Last month, we got together and went to Medieval Times and Knott's
Berry Farm. Medieval Times was so much fun cheering for our team while watching the knights joust and
eating with our hands. We had our picture taken with "The King"! At Knott's Berry Farm, we went on all the
roller coaster rides, even the crazy ones. We laughed as we ran through the park and joked with each other
while we waited in line. All of the girls had a great time together, but we missed our Queen Mum, Debbie
Foster. These are some special memories that I have been making with my girlfriends here in ETI. If you
are thinking about becoming a part of the Jr. Ambassadors, I would like to encourage you to join.

ETI Trail Rider Award Program (TRAP)
by Carol Elliott
TRAP was started in 1982 as a
fun way for E.T.I. trail riders to
document trail usage while
keeping track of hours in the
saddle.
Over the years, there have been many
opportunities for E.T.I. to utilize these records while
working with communities and parks in preserving and
establishing trails. TRAP riders record the trails and
areas they ride on a Rider Log. Additional information
noted is number of riders in the party, whether the
trail is multi-use (bikes and/or hikers) and number of
hours ridden. All of this information can be compiled
and provided to park and community planners to show
that, yes, we are riding the trails and that trails and
open space for horseback riding, hiking and mountain
biking are worth preserving. As the rider’’s hours
increase, awards are given at intervals of 100 hours,
200 hours, 500 hours, 750 hours, 1000 hours, 1500
hours and on up. These awards are chevron patches
with the hourly levels stitched in colored embroidery.
Many riders attach their chevrons to hats, jackets,
saddle pads, saddle bags and breast collars. The
brightly colored chevrons are a conversation starter
out on the trail and that in turn promotes discussion
about trail use and keeping the trails available.
and send as an email attachment. Email me for an
online log sheet.
If you have an interest in joining TRAP for the first
time, give it a try. We need you, plus, watching your
hours add up can be a
bit addicting - an
addiction that is good for
you, your horse and trail
preservation.

additional information,
you may email me,

I wish to thank all TRAP riders for their dedication to
recording trail use! Some of the TRAP riders have
been in this program for many years and have
thousands of hours. Other riders are just getting
started. All TRAP riders - new and old timers contribute to the database of our trail usage.
Recording our hours in the saddle is a fun way to set
riding goals and receive recognition along the way.
In this issue of the E.T.I. Magazine, you will find a
listing of the TRAP riders and their hours as of March
15, 2014. Please note that ½ hour increments have
been left off of this listing so it would fit on the page.
Riders, you have not lost your ½ hour; it is still in the
records. In looking over the list, if you find any errors,
please contact me, and I will get them corrected. If
you have participated in TRAP in the past and would
like to join again, I can retrieve your hours from
before, and you can get started right away.
We now have TRAP log sheets available online if you
prefer to enter your hours on your computer or laptop

Trail Rider Award Program
T. R. A. P.
In its 32nd Year!
It’’s TRAP! What is ““TRAP”” you ask?
TRAP is ETI’’s Trail Rider Award Program!
What does it do?
A heck of a lot more than it sounds!
If you have any questions about the TRAP Program,
call TRAP Chairperson Carol Elliott, (760) 963-8209.
All completed logs and CHECKS should be sent to Carol
Elliott: 6990 Ord View Rd; Apple Valley Ca 92308.
[email protected]
All your TRAP dues of $6.00 are due in January.
ETI TRAP keeps computerized logs on how many
hours members are riding and where.
In this day and age, when trails are giving way to
housing developments, it is crucial that records be kept
on trail usage.
ETI Corrals in all areas are finding themselves
having to defend their riding areas more and more
against encroaching civilization. On several occasions,
TRAP records have been instrumental in maintaining
trail access.
When a Corral calls ETI TRAP and identifies a
specific problem area, TRAP not only provides them
with actual riding statistics of usage, but TRAP
members are notified to increase usage and support in
that particular area.
Documentation from ‘‘trail logs’’ turned in by TRAP
members are proof that trails are being used by
equestrians.
ETI TRAP acknowledges hours in the saddle with
shoulder patches and pins that can be attached almost
anywhere.
Lest we offend the ““cart”” people, TRAP also counts
those non-arena hours of driving time spent on the
trails.
How much does all this cost? It’’s cheap!!! The fee
to join TRAP is only $12.00 (you must maintain current
ETI membership); then the TRAP membership is
maintained each year for only $6.00.
You will start by receiving the TRAP main shoulder
patch (about the size of a police patch), and your log
sheets. As you hit the hour goals (100, 200, 500, etc.),
additional patches will be sent to you. When you reach
the higher levels, your hours will be acknowledged with
pins instead of patches.
Why should the Show people get all the awards?

Bonelli MAU Spring Roundup
With warmer weather upon us and as hikers and bikers
and equestrians dust off their gear and once again hit the
LA County Trails, Bonelli MAU is gearing up for an
activity-packed Spring season. We are looking forward to
member training, spring cleaning, trailer rodeo, quarterly
rides, first aid training and recertification, revision of the
MOU with LA County, and to the Antonvich Ride coming to
Frank G. Bonelli Regional Park this spring.
Bonelli MAU News
The Bonelli MAU staging arena was closed in March due to
construction of a new Sheriff modular building adjacent to
the Frank G. Bonelli Regional Park Headquarters
office. There will be construction work going on here for
the next several months and the contractor will be storing
equipment at the bottom of the hill at the entrance of the
West MAU arena. In order to avoid any potential hazards,
the Superintendant of Bonelli Regional Park is asking all
equestrian units avoid using the West arena until further
notice. Equestrian units or trail riders may stage at the
East MAU arena across the street from the Bonelli
Equestrian Center, outside the gates of the Bonelli Equestrian Center, the West Maintenance yard, or the North
Shore Staging areas. There are many equestrian access
points just outside the gates of Bonelli Park, allowing you
access on horseback without requiring park admission
fees.
In addition, the Bonelli MAU training and after training
ride scheduled for March 9 training was rescheduled to
April 13 due to rains in early March affecting arena and
trail conditions.
Several Bonelli MAU members attended the first
H.E.A.R.T. volunteer training in February, contributing
almost 40 volunteer hours to this worthy cause.
Bonelli MAU was honored to be invited and several of our
members attended the North American Mounted Unit
Commander’’s Association (NAMUCA) held February 26 ––
Page 40
March 2 at the City of
Industry
Expo
Center. The training
was hosted by the Los
Angeles
County
Sheriff’’s Department,
Mounted
Enforcement Detail, the
LASD Parks Bureau
Mounted
Enforcement Detail, and the
Los
Angeles Police
Department’’s Metropolitan Mounted ““E”” Platoon. Participants and over eighty mounts hailed from all over the
United States as well as internationally, from continents as
far flung as Asia, Australia, and South America to attend
this five day practical and classroom training event.
Some of the skills covered in the three-day practical
training included many ground work, sensory, and course
work covered by our local MAU trainings. Other skills
training of significant value to our Bonelli MAU member
participants included formation work, tactical dismounting,
vehicle and pedestrian stops, and crowd control. The
training also included fun and team building activities such
as jousting, relay races, and team penning.
It was really great to note how well the Bonelli and
Walnut Creek MAU certified horse/rider teams did
alongside the law enforcement mounts.
The calm
demeanor of our teams really speaks to the caliber of our
MAU training regimen and the LA County MAU certification
program. Special congratulations go out to our Bonelli
MAU member Gail Bohlander who led and won a fourmember team penning challenge with two participants
from Taiwan
and one from
the
Florida
P o l i c e
Department.

homepage, www.bonellimau.org:
Q. What does the Bonell Park MAU do?
Q. What is a Mounted Assistance Unit (MAU)?
A. In addition to patrolling the trails on horseback, reporting on trail conditions, and assisting park visitors, Bonelli Park Administration also appreciates
Bonelli MAU's assistance and participation during key
events at the park, but HEY, any reason to ride is a
great one...Right!! Examples would be the semiannual Antonovich Trail Dusters Rides, Jazz Fest West
at Bonelli, Boy Scout Jamborees, and other special
events. Events like these are why we train several
times a year. Ask any of our members, our regular
trainings, patrols, and group rides pay off!
A. "MAU members are not peace officers, and should not
become physically involved in any problems observed
on park property". *
"The MAU is a volunteer organization under the supervision of County of Los Angeles Department of Parks
and Recreation Volunteer Program. The purpose of the
MAU is to patrol the trails on horseback and to ensure
the safety of all users by reporting any hazards or
dangerous situations found in the park or on the trail
system. The MAU also assists park visitors in their
efforts to enjoy their leisure time during their visits." *
* County of Los Angeles Parks and Recreation 2012
Memorandum of Understanding (MOU)
Q. What is the Bonelli MAU?
A. The Bonelli MAU not only patrols their own "Home
Park””, the Frank G. Bonelli Regional Park in San Dimas,
California, but they may patrol other regional parks, at
no cost, within Los Angeles County. The Bonelli MAU
has its own personality just like any volunteer organization. The Bonelli MAU is very socially active and in addition
to
the
regularly scheduled Bonelli MAU
activities
at
Bonelli
P ark,
some members
may spend weekends riding &
camping at various locations all
around Southern
and Central California.
Q. Are there requirements to join Bonelli MAU?
A. Yes, there are requirements to join and to remain a
member of Our Unit. Each Member must pass the LA
County Parks Volunteer screening and application process, complete an Orientation Ride, process the proper
paperwork, and certify on their horse as a team. Once
certified, there are additional requirements to remain a
member of Bonelli MAU. Members must participate in
regularly scheduled events, attend regular meetings,
patrol a required number of hours per month, participate in training, participate in group rides, maintain an
ETI membership in good standing, hold current First
Aid & CPR certification, and maintain current LA County
Parks Volunteer ID.
Q. How do I learn more?
A. Learn more about us at our website,
www.bonellimau.org. We look forward to seeing you
at one of our meetings, one of our activities, our out
on the trails!

What a way to start of a new year. President Sharon
Chandler and Secretary Bill Naylor volunteered to help
Dusty’’s Riders at the Horse Expo in Pomona. Many ETI
members volunteered to help them with their annual fund
raiser. Plans are also underway for the spring training
and certification Program, which starts April 12, for members to hone their patrol skills or certify to be able to patrol the County trails and Parks as a member of the MAU.
We have also been advised the County is reviewing our
proposal to put a trail and obstacle course at Whittier Narrows.
As a side note several of us received some emergency
response training this last month with the Los Angeles
County Fire Department in horse rescue using helicopters
and USAR equipment. What a great experience.
The WNMAU is a volunteer unit made up of ETI members
who wish to also volunteer for Los Angeles County Parks
and Recreation and is based out of Whittier Narrows Regional Park. Check the WNMAU web site for up to date
information on the next meeting. Meetings are held the
first Thursday of each month.

Are you looking for a safe, sane, inexpensive yet fun place
to expose your green horse or beginner rider -of any age!
- to the fun of horse show participation? Look no further
then Corral 2. We will be holding the first of our semiannual Western Schooling Shows on Sunday, April 27. As
with our previous shows, it will be at Rose Bowl
Riders. Those of you who have attended our shows know
what a supportive, low-key horse show experience we
provide. Want to know more? Read on!
Corral 2 is so happy to announce that we are now 21st
century participants: We have our own website! Whether
you have questions about ETI's oldest active Corral or
want to download the horse show premium check us out
at: eticorral2.org.
Don't want to end on a sad note, so I won't. Instead of
writing about Corral 2's Liz Blackwelder's death, let's
instead write about her life. And, was there ever anyone
more alive than Liz? Anyone who ever met her will never
forget her enthusiasm, her laugh, her interest in so many
things: gardens, penmanship, horses, family, dogs, cats
but especially pertinent to us, trail riders, was her interest,
commitment and enthusiasm for maintaining our open,
wild space and the trails that give us access to it. She put
her money where her mouth was, too. Her very generous
donation was the seed that resulted in water and rest
facilities at Cherry Canyon's "Ultimate Destination". She
was a founding member of the La Canada-Flintridge Trails
Council. Ninety-three years old and younger of heart than
some twenty-year olds I know. Liz, it was a privilege to
know you.

Corral 3
ETI CORRAL 3 President Cindi Hawkins, and Member Mary
Kennedy, attended the 2014 training that involved over
100 riders. The 5-day training event was held at the City
of Industry complex, and involved a wide range of
activities that included formation riding, crowd control
techniques, search & rescue, first aid, and other sessions
(including working cattle).
Participants received a wide range of instruction and
suggestions on dealing with dangerous, unruly crowds,
basic horse emergency medical supplies, personal first aid
& survival kits. Riding was a challenge due to the size and
nature of the group, and desensitizing played a large role
in working situations. Members from other countries
participated, many of whom could not bring their own
mounts and were riding horses made available to them for
the exercises.
Cindi and Mary will be making a follow-up report to the
Corral for ideas on what our members can do to help
further the goals of the unit, enhance the safety of horse
and rider, and provide additional services to the
community.
WOUNDED WARRIOR Project Implementation
Member Joanne Kellar is communicating with the local
Wounded Warrior Program Coordinator, to learn how our
Corral can get involved in helping with rehabilitation of
U.S. Military personnel wounded during overseas
deployments. More information should be available for the
next meeting. We look forward to getting involved in this
worthwhile endeavor.
WALNUT CREEK –– Trail Obstacle Course
Suggestions welcome on Obstacle Course creation. We’’re
working with Park and Trails supervisors to ensure and
hope to get this program off the drawing board and on
the ground by the Fall. The Walnut Creek MAU has
acquired construction materials and is planning to
introduce an obstacle course in the Reeder arena area,
which will be strategically placed off-trail to take
advantage of tree and slope locations……and blend in with
the environment. Cindi Hawkins (President, ETI Corral 3
& Walnut Creek MAU) is managing the effort and
researching obstacle variations.
Volume 14, Issue 4
With the Walnut Creek MAU & ETI Corral 3 moving this
effort along, as previously mentioned, the inclusion of
various obstacle training items will provide riders and their
horses with a variety of challenges to expand the
capabilities of riding skills and problem-solving.
graffiti, clean-up necessities, and suggestions on
improvement of the trails. Email comments to Cindi or
Charlie Hawkins, and they will get immediate attention.
WALNUT CREEK TRAIL MAP DEVELOPMENT –– ONGOING
As always our focus will be on keeping the trails safe and
enjoyable. We’’re continuing to make an impact on
improvements in Walnut Creek this summer. As MAU
volunteers as well, we’’re happy to see a noticeable
improvement when patrolling the trails in this area.
Walnut Creek ETI Corral 3 is primarily made up of Walnut
Creek MAU volunteers as well as area riders.
Our
meetings are held bi-monthly on the first Thursday, April
thru September at the Walnut Creek Snack Bar in Bonelli
Park at the Building/RR#E8 off Via Verde, just a stone’’s
throw from the Bonelli MAU training arena.
MAU & ETI #3 members have developed an area trail map
showing water crossings, alternate and secondary trails, in
addition to access and egress points that would be very
helpful in the event of an emergency. The map has been
provided for review to LA County Trails personnel, as well
as Bonelli Park personnel. Of course, at this point it’’s
strictly an unofficial effort, but it helps to put some
perspective on the region’’s trails. (Keeping in mind that it
is an unofficial version, anyone who would like a copy
should email Cindi: [email protected].)
Park personnel are doing a great job maintaining the
picnic area that is just yards east of the Reeder arena.
Picnic tables and hitching posts are located conveniently
for riders who would like to take a break, relax, and have
something to eat before setting back out on the trail.
With the heat still showing up from time-to-time, Walnut
Creek offers a great shade-filled ‘‘ride and relaxation’’
venue!
REMIND ALL PARK GUESTS TO KEEP DOGS ON A LEASH
Many visitors think their dogs are well-trained, but several
incidents continue to occur. Loose dogs continue to be a
problem. Remind hikers there are leash laws, and ETI
members should keep their canine trail-ride companions
leashed as well, to set an example for others.
WALNUT CREEK OFFERS THE PERFECT SPRING RIDE,
AND YOUR INPUT IS WELCOME!
As many who ride this trail already know with the tree
canopy and resulting shade for much of the ride, the
Walnut Creek ‘‘Mike D Antonovich Trail’’ is the perfect ride
for warm days. Several rocky areas along and in the
creek were cleared by Park personnel last year. With
these great improvements, it adds to the enjoyment of
equestrians and hikers alike. Creek water levels are still

Last month’’s La Cabana ride turned out perfect with 16
riders and a great lunch. We have the Hansen Dam ride
this month on the 23rd which I pre-rode and have a trail
set up. It will be a bit of a trail trial on a couple parts due
to the rain and extra water, but that's what I consider real
trail riding when you need to watch where you are riding
so you don't get knocked off the horse or have him

tripping. Course, I won't take riders through the deep
water and soft sand I found……that would really freak them
out.

Marshall Canyon has been experiencing a large population
of bikers, hikers and joggers on weekends. We continue
to remind bikers of trail etiquette. Although many are
courteous to equine, they still need to be courteous to
hikers and joggers. We encourage all of our fellow MAU
units and horseback riders to remind bikers of trail
etiquette when visiting Marshall Canyon.
We had a wonderful turnout for our training in February,
and we welcome our new recruit Valorie Thomas, who we
voted in on March 3 as our newest member. Valorie and
her horse Tango completed their training hours and
passed the test! Congratulations!
Marshall Canyon MAU is actively looking for new
members. We train at the Fred Palmer Equestrian Center
in Marshall Canyon, plus we have many beautiful, treecovered trails to ride. For information, please contact
Darlene McGrady at (909) 592-6477 or email at

If you would like to join our group or visit us, we meet the
first Monday of each month at the Bonelli Park Conference

We were sorry to have to cancel our Trail Trials scheduled
for March 16. After the few days' heavy rain, the trails
were dangerous and full of fallen branches and
debris. We just didn't have enough time to get a clean-up
crew together to go out and do maintenance. We hope to
re-schedule for the fall. The new date will be publicized
as soon as we have it!
Now that we have longer days, we hope to have some
trail clearing days scheduled very soon. If anyone is

Our series offers an environment that allows beginners to
feel comfortable and yet is competitive for those who are
experienced and accomplished riders. Opportunity for
lessons in leadership and friendship through a variety of
equine activities, helping with the Mike Antonovich ride,
participating in the Newhall 4th of July parade, Camping
Trip to Rancho Oso, Hosting Convention Buckle Series
Gymkhana, Run for the Saddle Series Gymkhana,
Christmas Caroling on Horseback.
Our February ride was The 8th Annual Cheri Blue Ride.
Cheri was a longtime member of Corral 22, a wonderful
horsewoman and a dear friend to many. Twenty-five
riders set off from Rose Bowl Riders located in the Lower
Hahamonga Watershed Park in Pasadena for a three hour
ride. The weather was perfect - clear and sunny but not
too hot. We rode the Flint Canyon Trail which takes you
along the Arroyo, through the beautiful residential areas

crossing the river several times and admired the green
grassy banks and beautiful trees for shade.
After a gradual climb, we enjoyed a cool breeze and a
panoramic view of Thousand Oaks. We then proceeded
down through a housing area and across a road, then
worked our way down a gentle descent through scrub
oaks for several miles down into another valley, following
the river to the waterfall. About 5 minutes from the falls
was a large, shady picnic area complete with hitching
posts, barbecues, picnic tables and even bathrooms with
flushing toilets and fresh water. After a short respite, we
mounted up for the last leg of the ride, which was only 45
minutes before reaching home base.
Thanks to Polo Paul for leading a great ride and to
everyone who participated!

It looks like Spring has sprung with her usual wonderful
displays of sunshine, wildflowers, and great riding
weather! My son, in Idaho, is still shoveling snow to make
a path to his corrals to feed and using a hammer to break
the ice on the water barrels. We may have wild fires and
mud slides, but Glendora feels pretty good to these old
bones. Along with the stirring of new life brought on by
springtime, comes the excitement of new horse related
activities on the calendar.
Corral 35 is presenting an Arena Trail Trial Obstacle
Challenge Buckle Series at their Glendora Arena, starting
with the first event on April 5. This is a series consisting
of three separate event dates. These dates are April 5,
May 17, and June 14, 2014. Contact Jean Chadsey for
details at (909) 967-2065. (See flyer on page 26.)
As usual, several other events will be happening in our
area on the same day, April 5. San Dimas and Glendora
will be involved in Trail Clean-Up Day in their cities, and
some of our members are in leadership roles in their
communities. We are proud of our commitment to service
and appreciate the hometown efforts to help equestrians.

Entries start at 7am.

showing your horses.
February 27, at the Griffith Park Resource Board meeting,
Lynn Brown, Corral 38 Trail Coordinator, was awarded a
beautiful Commendation plaque from the City Of Los
Angeles.
Lynn was appointed by both Councilman
LaBonge and by L.A. Rec. and Parks as the only
equestrian on the group to the Griffith Park Master Plan
Working Group for the next 25 years. She served for over
3 years in monthly meetings.
It was a wonderful
opportunity for her to meet and make friends with other
concerned Park users that she would never have met
otherwise. These friendly contacts formed alliances for
future trail issues. Hikers, equestrians, nature lovers and
others have the same concerns about trail access and safe
trail use.
Together we presented a much stronger
coalition than simply the voices of equestrians.
IMPORTANT TRAIL UPDATES
Beginning on March 15, DWP will be doing to construction
work on Zoo Drive, next to the Live Steamers. The Trail
will be rerouted at the gateway to Rattlesnake. Riders will
cross the street next to the former equestrian parking lot
and will be riding into the grass park. You’’ll follow a trail
marked with cones and tape and be able to access
Rattlesnake easily. Return the same way. This will be
from March 15 to June 1.
Also, another heads up. Beginning on March 15, a
tunneling project will begin.
It will go from the
Headworks site, pass underneath the Martinez Arena
parking lot, pass under Tunnel 9 and continue through
Travel Town. The tunneling machine is about 70 feet
underground and moves very slowly. It is not expected
that any vibrations will be felt by the horses crossing over
the area. No prospected date as to when it will be
finished.
Good news for equestrians trailering in to ride on the
park.
The traditional parking across from the Live
Steamers on Zoo Drive will be reopened soon. DWP has
finished their work and are packing up equipment. The
parking lot across from Martinez Arena will also remain as
alternative parking.

Our February 22 and 23 event was a training clinic at my
house with Ewa Vaars, a previous ETI member who
moved to Nevada. Saturday's class of six started out
learning three basic ground skills and then graduating to
the saddle either Saturday afternoon or Sunday. Sunday's
class of seven practiced the skills we learned on Saturday
and worked on individual problems. One accomplishment
was getting Diane Bubier's horse Blaze, 17, into the trailer
twice in one weekend - he had never been in a trailer
before (and didn't want to get in either). Jeanette
Hayhurst gets some credit for that one, too. Our auditors
had a great time watching and taking pictures, too.

Eight of us went out on a ride in our local
hills in March and thoroughly enjoyed the weather, trails
and views of Cummings Valley. It was such a beautiful
day that I had to include a picture showing off our valley
and mountains along with a rear view of our ride leader,
Linda Wells. The trails are quiet and wide and stretch
from Cummings Valley to Stallion Springs, but this time we
kept to a loop that was a fairly easy 21/2 hour ride that
started and ended in the valley. We got a glimpse of a
bobcat while on the trail but often see elk if we’’re lucky.
March 22 will have been our Newberry Springs trail ride.
Hopefully with the March rain that we had, it will provide
us with some desert flowers in bloom.
April 12 is our veterinarian clinic with Dr. Ron Lenhert and
also chiropractor Susie Figley here at my house. We will

Open to all age
riders in all
Corrals. Chairperson is Tracy

to join the High Point Gymkhana Program or to have
your Corral hold a High Point Gymkhana or become
the chair.
Horse Shows
ETI has a National High Point
Circuit. High Point Chairs are Kim Estrada [(818)

and Darian Binkley [(805) 338-3532
[email protected]].
NonETI members can participate in our
ETI High Point Shows. But to be a
part of the National High Point
Circuit you must be an ETI member
and sign up for your classes. You may sign up any
time. Your points will only be included once you
have joined the High Point Circuit. The new circuit
starts March 2.
The Junior Ambassador Program is open to all
ETI youth age 7 to 21. Boys
are welcome for the Prince
and
King
category.
Applications for the program
may be obtained by calling
Debbie Foster at the ETI
Office (818) 698-6200 or [email protected]. The
completed forms are due back in the office in May
1st with all fees, sponsors, autobiography and
pictures. This is a great way for our youth to
represent their Corral and ETI.
Participants
volunteer their time at several mandatory events as
well as many horse shows; trail trials, parades, trail
dedications, quarterly dinner meetings and fun
events just for the Junior Ambassador Court such as
the retreat! Contact Debbie or any of the girls who
have participated for more info on the fun activities.

Trail Rider Award Program
(TRAP) keeps computerized logs
on how many hours members are
riding. In this day and age, when
trails are giving way to housing
developments, it is crucial that
records be kept on trail usage. ETI Corrals in all
areas are finding themselves having to defend their
riding areas more and more against encroaching
civilization. On several occasions, TRAP records
have been instrumental in maintaining trail access.
ETI TRAP acknowledges hours in the saddle with
shoulder patches & pins that can be attached almost
anywhere. The fee to join TRAP is only $12.00 (you
must maintain current ETI membership); then the
TRAP membership is maintained each year for only
$6.00. You will start by receiving the TRAP main
shoulder patch and your log sheets. As you achieve
the hour goals additional patches will be sent to you.
Carol Elliott is the TRAP chair. Please contact
[email protected] or (760) 963-8209.
Trail Trials: An ETI Sanctioned Trail Trial consists
of a trail ride, usually averaging
between two and three hours,
with trail obstacles along the
way. Obstacles are natural, or
simulate naturally occurring
conditions for the horse and
rider to negotiate. We now
have a DVD from a clinic demonstrating obstacles
and tips to compete or put on a Trail Trial. It is
important to remember that the people doing the
judging at sanctioned Trail Trial event are volunteers
following the rulebook and are doing the best they
can. Safety, control, and common sense are the
number one priorities for all ETI sanctioned Trail

Organized in 1944. Office of the publication is located at 2880 Sacramento
Ave Acton, CA 93510. Printed by Wright Color Graphics, Sun Valley, CA.
Periodical postage paid in Glendale, California and at additional mailing
offices. All rights reserved. The editor, staff, and board of directors of
EQUESTRIAN TRAILS are not responsible for opinions and statements
expressed in signed articles, unsolicited mail or paid advertisements. These
opinions are not necessarily the opinions of the editor, staff, and board of
directors of this publication. Unsolicited material may or may not be printed
depending on space and content. Reproduction of any article in whole or
part, or any artwork or graphics, is by permission of this publication or
author/artist only. DEADLINE: All material (editorial or advertising) must be
received no later than the tenth of the month preceding the date of issue.
CHANGE OF ADDRESS: Send old address as well as new one to ETI ~ P.O.
Box 1138 Acton, CA 93510. Change must include zip and Corral number.
Change must be in the office by the 10th of the month to assure delivery of
the next month’’s issue. The post office will not forward copies unless you
provide extra postage. If change is not made with the ETI office, your
magazine could be delayed getting to your new address for three to six
months. POSTMASTER: send address changes to Equestrian Trails Inc. P.O.
Box 1138 Acton, CA 93510.
NOT RECEIVING YOUR MAGAZINE? 1. Please check with the ETI Office to
make sure your membership is current. 2. Change of address, see above. 3.
If the Office says you are not current, check to see if your Corral has
processed your membership and has sent it in. 4. If this is all correct and the
Office is printing a label for you, please check with your local Post Office.
Since we mail ““periodical”” (second class), the Post Office can hold this mail
from 3-5 days. Since we are newsprint, sometimes we get mixed up with the
weekly supermarket sales flyers. It helps to let your Postman or the Post
Office know that you are not receiving your mail.
Basic membership amounts are Family $50; Senior $35; Junior
$30. Some Corrals charge additional amounts. Please contact a
Corral or send to ETI P.O. Box 1138, Acton, CA 93510

Equestrian Trails Foundation
Equestrian Trails, Inc. is a non-profit organization, but not a 501(c)(3), public benefit corporation. What this
means is that donations to ETI are not tax-deductible as charitable contributions. Businesses who ““donate””
are actually advertising or doing business promotion, which they may deduct as an ordinary business
expense.
When ETI was originally founded during World War II, it was a public benefit corporation, but over the last 50
years or so, the organization evolved until the IRS re-classified us as non-profit social club like a Masonic
lodge, or a Chamber of Commerce.
In 2004 a new corporation was formed called Equestrian Trails Foundation with additional board members,
Robert Foster and Katie Twohy. On June 9, 2004, we received approval from the IRS as a 501 (c)(3)
organization. Initially, the Foundation will handle primarily educational and trail preservation issues. We are
now accepting donations.
If you have any questions about donations to the Foundation, please leave a message for me at the ETI office
(818) 698-6200 and I will return your call as soon as possible.
Anyone wishing to make a donation toward building the horse camp in Reagan Equestrian Campground may
do so at this time. Please make your check payable to ETI Foundation and send to the ETI Office: P.O. Box
1138, Acton, CA 93510. If you want your donation to be used only for the campground, please write
““Reagan Equestrian Campground”” on your check.
