he following excerpt is from Under Constraint, a sermon
preached by Charles Spurgeon on Sunday morning,
April 28, 1878, at the Metropolitan Tabernacle in London.
I have not much patience with a certain
class of Christians nowadays who will hear
anybody preach so long as they can say,
“He is very clever, a fine preacher, a man of
genius, a born orator.” Is cleverness to make
false doctrine palatable? Why, sirs, to me the
ability of a man who preaches error is my
sorrow rather than my admiration.
I cannot endure false doctrine, however
neatly it may be put before me. Would you
have me eat poisoned meat because the
dish is of the choicest ware? It makes me
indignant when I hear another gospel put
before the people with enticing words, by
men who would fain make merchandise of
souls; and I marvel at those who have soft
words for such deceivers.
“That is your bigotry,” says one. Call it so
if you like, but it is the bigotry of the loving
John who wrote — “If there come any unto
you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him
not into your house, neither bid him God
speed: for he that biddeth him God speed is
partaker of his evil deeds.”

enable them to build a mousetrap at the
expense of their admirers, and therefore they
profane the houses which your sires have
built for the preaching of the gospel, and turn
aside the organisations of once orthodox
communities to help their infidelity: I call it
by that name in plain English, for “modern
thought” is not one whit better, and of the
two evils I give infidelity the palm, for it is
less deceptive.
I beg the Lord to give back to the churches
such a love to his truth that they may discern
the spirits, and cast out those which are not
of God. I feel sometimes like John, of whom
it is said that, though the most loving of all

stern and hard, it is after the mind of Christ,
for the apostle spake by inspiration when he
said, “If we or an angel from heaven preach
to you any other gospel than that ye have
received, let him be accursed.”
According to modern efficiency he ought
to have said, “Let him be kindly spoken with
in private, but pray make no stir. No doubt

many of the senators on Monday
morning is to get together over
coffee and discuss your program!”
So many calls and letters we
receive are from people who
might never go to church or watch
another religious program. Our
media consultants (who also work
with numerous other ministries)
say that we are seeing more
response to the invitation for
salvation than perhaps any other
program on the air today.
Many people write to say, “We
couldn’t make it through our week
without hearing your analysis and
encouragement.”
And not long ago, I got a letter
that brought tears to my eyes.
A young girl who had decided
to commit suicide was flipping
through the TV channels and
stopped on our program. She
wrote, “Rexella, you looked
straight into the camera at me and
said, ‘God cares about you … and
so do I!’ That changed my whole
thinking … and saved my life.”
Preparing for the
promised days
Jack and I pray earnestly as we
prepare for each program. We are
keenly aware of the responsibility
that is ours because we truly believe
that we are living in the days just
prior to the coming of the Lord. We
don’t like to use the phrase “last
days” because it’s not a countdown
to the world ending. Actually, it’s
the promised days — just before
Christ will come back to earth, set
up His kingdom, and stop all the
mayhem and madness. It will be the
beginning of a thousand years of
peace on the earth.
I believe we are now living
in the time the Bible refers to as
the “hour of temptation” that will
come upon all the world and try
those who live on planet earth (see
Revelation 3:10). But Jesus surely is
coming very soon!
When is He coming? Each week
on television, we talk about the
events the Bible says are signs of
His coming. We share news reports
about wars, rumors of wars,
famines, pestilences, earthquakes,
and countless other distresses and
fateful events.
Often people will say, “The
world has always had war and
famine and trouble — all these
things. Are today’s events any
different? Why do they have special
significance now?”
The answer is found in two key
verses. Jesus said, And this gospel
of the kingdom shall be preached
in all the world for a witness unto
all nations; and then shall the end
(end of the age) come (Matthew
24:14). Only recently, in our
generation, could it be said that the
gospel has been preached in all the
world, witnessing to all nations.
Jack and I are doing this weekly!
Secondly, the Bible doesn’t
say, “when you see wars, look
up” or “when you see famine and
pestilence, the time is near.” Look
carefully at what Jesus said in
Matthew 24:33 — when ye shall
see ALL these things, know
that it is near, even at the doors
(emphasis mine). All these things,
all at once — simultaneously!
That’s the key Jesus said to watch
for, and I’m telling you, that day
has come!
There are many places in the
Word that talk about things that will
come to pass — there’s a whole list
of them, but I’ve chosen to write
about just four — perhaps the top
four — that have to come together
before the coming of the Lord.
As I prepare for our telecast
each week and select global
headlines to share with the
millions who are watching, I am
still amazed by my surprise at the
inhumanity of man. I say to myself,
“Why am I surprised?” Jesus told
us that these things would happen.
Nevertheless, I am still astounded
at the violence, cruelty, and hatred
that men and women direct to
others every day.

1. Wars and rumors of wars
(Matthew 24:6-7)
History’s record shows that
there have only been 268 years of
peace in the last four thousand
years! Out of some 8,000 treaties,
agreements, and contracts, only
about 200 have actually been kept
— that’s only 2.5 percent!
This tells us that men are unable
to make — and keep — peace.
Mankind is absolutely unable to
set up a lasting world agreement
for peace. It has never happened
and will never happen. But Jesus
promises that when He returns,
He will set up His kingdom on the
earth, and we will have a thousand
years of peace. It will be the first
time since the dawn of creation!
There have been wars and
rumors of wars since the beginning
of time — but never like today. If
you look at what’s going on in the
world right now, you’ll find there is
conflict in virtually every quarter.
We find nation against nation,
kingdom against kingdom, ethnic
group against ethnic group, tribe
against tribe. Even people from
different religious groups, living in
the same place and under the same
conditions, line up to fight each
other to the death.
This so grieves my spirit that
often I must allow the grace of
God to comfort my soul. I cry out,
and the Lord whispers, “This is
what must happen just prior to My
coming, but I will make it all right
when I come!” Only then can I find
assurance in the face of worldwide
crisis and turmoil.
I believe that we should do
all we can on a humanistic basis
to help oppressed and suffering
people in any way we can.
Thank God for the agencies and
organizations that provide food,
shelter, and medical attention to
suffering people everywhere. But
in the long run, the best thing
we can possibly do is try to help
prepare them spiritually for what
they must endure. There is no other
solution. We must say to them,
“This is all going to end someday.
Get ready! Be ready! Jesus is
coming to bring peace upon the
earth. Keep looking up! Lift up
your head, for your redemption
draweth nigh” (see Luke 21:28).
This is so important because
people everywhere are beginning
to realize that man is helpless
to bring peace to the world.
This realization will make them
vulnerable to the claims and
promises of the Antichrist when
he comes. Why am I surprised?
Oh, yes — he will come at the
appointed time. He is going to say,
“I do have a solution for world
peace — a seven-year peace
contract for all the world.” In their
desperation, the nations of the
world will allow themselves to
be deceived. But like every other
peace plan in the history of the
world, the Antichrist’s plan will fail
— the Bible says in only three and
a half years!
So today we must do all that we
can to point the lost to the Answer
— not a theory, a contract, a plan
— but to the Son of God, Jesus
Christ, the Savior of the world.
That’s what Jack and I do every
week on our worldwide telecast.

privation, and deathly need and
starvation in a world where there
is such abundance. Why am I
surprised? Often there can be
unimaginable opulence and wealth
at one end of the street, and
hunger, want, and terrible suffering
at the other end of the same street.
The hunger, disease, and
pestilence around the world hurt
my heart so much. Today we
have many, many billionaires all
over the world — people with so
much wealth that they literally
cannot even count it all. There are
billionaires not only in prosperous,
wealthy countries, but also in poor,
underdeveloped nations. Outside
the gates of these billionaires’
estates — in the very shadow of
their elegant palaces of privilege —
starving people die in the darkness.
In nations ravaged by famine,
with millions of starving children,
cruel dictators hoard the country’s
meager resources and even
confiscate the humanitarian aid
sent by other nations for their own
personal gain. No wonder the Word
reminds us that the heart (of man)
is deceitful above all things, and
desperately wicked (Jeremiah 17:9).
Jesus told a parable of a rich
farmer whose land had produced
so plentifully that he had no place
to contain all the harvest. So he
planned to tear down his old barns
and build bigger ones. Then he said
to himself, “You’ve got so much,
just take it easy, eat, drink, and be
merry.”
But God said, “You fool, this
night will your soul be required
of you — then whose shall those
things be?”
Jesus went on to say, So is
he that layeth up treasure for
himself, and is not rich toward
God (Luke 12:21).
Most of us are not billionaires.
Perhaps we do not even have much
to spare beyond our basic needs.
But in the words of American
writer Edward Everett Hale —
I am only one, but still I
am one.
I cannot do everything,
but still I can do
something.
And because I cannot
do everything,
I will not refuse to do
something I can do.
There is always something we
can do to help share the Gospel
with those who do not know the
Lord. Even when the physical
needs of nations and people are
beyond our means to change, we
can point them to Jesus and His
words of eternal life. In many
impoverished regions where
television is not available to very
many, we are broadcasting the
message of Christ’s soon return
on radio, hoping that somehow
we can get through to some of the
people.
3.Without natural affection
(2 Timothy 3:3)
Recently on our telecast, I read
a horrifying headline and story
about a mother who cut off the
hands of her children because
they were disobedient! Can you
believe it? That’s not the affection
of a mother’s heart. How could a
parent’s mind get so twisted as to
mistake brutal, bloody amputation
and dismemberment as loving
discipline? Truly we are living in
“perilous times.”
Do you believe we are living
in a day when people are without
natural affection? We see and
hear about it all the time. There
are many husbands who beat and
abuse their wives, even wives
who also are abusive. There have
also been numerous cases of
children who have murdered their
parents or have beaten or injured
a younger brother or sister.
Why am I surprised? We live
in an age when sexual predators
stalk children on the playgrounds
of schools. Even teachers and
religious leaders have been
involved in horrible sexual abuse
of young boys and girls.
That’s not a natural heart!
That is a person without natural
affection. You do not prey on
children — I don’t care who you
are or what “logic” you use to
rationalize it. God intended for us
to love our neighbor as ourselves
— to have a love for everyone, no
matter who they are. Betraying
the trust and dependence of
children and family is unnatural!
The Bible warns us about a
whole laundry list of terrible
behavioral practices that become
common in the world before
the end of the age comes. The
Apostle Paul wrote, For men
shall be lovers of their own
selves, covetous, boasters, proud,
blasphemers, disobedient to
parents, unthankful, unholy,
without natural affection,
trucebreakers, false accusers,
incontinent, fierce, despisers
of those that are good, traitors,
heady, highminded, lovers of
pleasures more than lovers of
God; having a form of godliness,
but denying the power thereof:
from such turn away (2 Timothy
3:2-5).
Do you recognize any of these
things in our society today? Are
they happening around where
you live? Then pay attention. This
is a biblical, prophetic sign of
the promised days just prior to
Christ’s coming!
4.Worldwide terrorism
(Matthew 24:37; Genesis 6:11, Luke 21:9)
Worldwide terrorism! Why am
I surprised? Jesus said, But as
the days of Noe [Noah] were, so
shall also the coming of the Son
of man be (Matthew 24:37).
What was it like in Noah’s day?
The earth also was corrupt before
God, and the earth was filled
with violence (Genesis 6:11). Does
that description fit the world you
know? I think so.
Finally, Jesus said, But when ye
shall hear of wars and (violent)
commotions, be not terrified: for
these things must first come to
pass … nation shall rise against
nation, and kingdom against
kingdom (Luke 21:9-10).
Terrorism is certainly on the
upswing right now. It has struck
with deadly fury in New York,
London, Madrid, Russia, and
continues in Afghanistan, Iraq,
and around the world. I believe we
have to be vigilant and do all we
can to keep it from happening. But
we must not be surprised when
it strikes. Jesus said these things
must come to pass — terrorism
will continue at some level right
up until the coming of the Lord!
Dear Jack and Rexella,
Thank you, Jack and Rexella Van
Impe, for telling it like it is about
sin and jellyfish-spined preachers
giving out rotten meat. I applaud
you — the true body of Christ
applauds you....

am so excited,
positive, and

each week with
global news
and gloom
and doom. We
say, “Yes, we do see terrorism,
just as Jesus foretold. But let not
your heart be troubled — these
things must come to pass. They
precede the coming of the Lord.”
We’re trying to prepare people
with a positive outlook, knowing
that trials teach us trust in our
Heavenly Father!
Yes, there have been some
dark days. There may well be
dark times again. But don’t be
afraid of “the power of darkness.”
I believe darkness doesn’t really
have any power of its own — it’s
only the absence of light! If you
carry light with you, it always
dispels darkness! Darkness has no
power if you hold up the light of
the world — Jesus Christ, the Son
of God, our Savior and our Lord.
He said, Peace I leave with you,
my peace I give unto you: not as
the world giveth, give I unto you.
Let not your heart be troubled,
neither let it be afraid (John
14:27).
Today let us allow God to
comfort our souls and give us
hope for tomorrow. Be ready and
watching for His return. With all
my heart, I believe He is coming
very soon!

unimaginable opulence and wealth
at one end of the street, and
hunger, want, and terrible suffering
at the other end of the same street.
The hunger, disease, and
pestilence around the world hurt
my heart so much. Today we
have many, many billionaires all
over the world — people with so
much wealth that they literally
cannot even count it all. There are
billionaires not only in prosperous,
wealthy countries, but also in poor,
underdeveloped nations. Outside
the gates of these billionaires’
estates — in the very shadow of
their elegant palaces of privilege —
starving people die in the darkness.
In nations ravaged by famine,
with millions of starving children,
cruel dictators hoard the country’s
meager resources and even
confiscate the humanitarian aid
sent by other nations for their own
personal gain. No wonder the Word
reminds us that the heart (of man)
is deceitful above all things, and
desperately wicked (Jeremiah 17:9).
Jesus told a parable of a rich
farmer whose land had produced
so plentifully that he had no place
to contain all the harvest. So he
planned to tear down his old barns
and build bigger ones. Then he said
to himself, “You’ve got so much,
just take it easy, eat, drink, and be
merry.”
But God said, “You fool, this
night will your soul be required
of you — then whose shall those
things be?”
Jesus went on to say, So is
he that layeth up treasure for
himself, and is not rich toward
God (Luke 12:21).
Most of us are not billionaires.
Perhaps we do not even have much
to spare beyond our basic needs.
But in the words of American
writer Edward Everett Hale —
I am only one, but still I
am one.
I cannot do everything,
but still I can do
something.
And because I cannot
do everything,
I will not refuse to do
something I can do.
There is always something we
can do to help share the Gospel
with those who do not know the
Lord. Even when the physical
needs of nations and people are
beyond our means to change, we
can point them to Jesus and His
words of eternal life. In many
impoverished regions where
television is not available to very
many, we are broadcasting the
message of Christ’s soon return
on radio, hoping that somehow
we can get through to some of the
people.
3.Without natural affection
(2 Timothy 3:3)
Recently on our telecast, I read
a horrifying headline and story
about a mother who cut off the
hands of her children because
they were disobedient! Can you
believe it? That’s not the affection
of a mother’s heart. How could a
parent’s mind get so twisted as to
mistake brutal, bloody amputation
and dismemberment as loving
discipline? Truly we are living in
“perilous times.”
Do you believe we are living
in a day when people are without
natural affection? We see and
hear about it all the time. There
are many husbands who beat and
abuse their wives, even wives
who also are abusive. There have
also been numerous cases of
children who have murdered their
parents or have beaten or injured
a younger brother or sister.
Why am I surprised? We live
in an age when sexual predators
stalk children on the playgrounds
of schools. Even teachers and
religious leaders have been
involved in horrible sexual abuse
of young boys and girls.
That’s not a natural heart!
That is a person without natural
affection. You do not prey on
children — I don’t care who you
are or what “logic” you use to
rationalize it. God intended for us
to love our neighbor as ourselves
— to have a love for everyone, no
matter who they are. Betraying
the trust and dependence of
children and family is unnatural!
The Bible warns us about a
whole laundry list of terrible
behavioral practices that become
common in the world before
the end of the age comes. The
Apostle Paul wrote, For men
shall be lovers of their own
selves, covetous, boasters, proud,
blasphemers, disobedient to
parents, unthankful, unholy,
without natural affection,
trucebreakers, false accusers,
incontinent, fierce, despisers
of those that are good, traitors,
heady, highminded, lovers of
pleasures more than lovers of
God; having a form of godliness,
but denying the power thereof:
from such turn away (2 Timothy
3:2-5).
Do you recognize any of these
things in our society today? Are
they happening around where
you live? Then pay attention. This
is a biblical, prophetic sign of
the promised days just prior to
Christ’s coming!
4.Worldwide terrorism
(Matthew 24:37; Genesis 6:11, Luke 21:9)
Worldwide terrorism! Why am
I surprised? Jesus said, But as
the days of Noe [Noah] were, so
shall also the coming of the Son
of man be (Matthew 24:37).
What was it like in Noah’s day?
The earth also was corrupt before
God, and the earth was filled
with violence (Genesis 6:11). Does
that description fit the world you
know? I think so.
Finally, Jesus said, But when ye
shall hear of wars and (violent)
commotions, be not terrified: for
these things must first come to
pass … nation shall rise against
nation, and kingdom against
kingdom (Luke 21:9-10).
Terrorism is certainly on the
upswing right now. It has struck
with deadly fury in New York,
London, Madrid, Russia, and
continues in Afghanistan, Iraq,
and around the world. I believe we
have to be vigilant and do all we
can to keep it from happening. But
we must not be surprised when
it strikes. Jesus said these things
must come to pass — terrorism
will continue at some level right
up until the coming of the Lord!

sin and jellyfish-spined preachers

Let not your heart be troubled,
neither let it be afraid (John
14:27).
Today let us allow God to
comfort our souls and give us
hope for tomorrow. Be ready and
watching for His return. With all
my heart, I believe He is coming
very soon!

carrying our program nearly a quarter of a
century, would refuse to run our Jack Van
Impe Presents program which named Robert
Schuller and Rick Warren, two individuals whom
I felt were drastically compromising God’s Holy
Word and Christianity.
Naming these individuals was nothing new. In 23
years on TBN, I mentioned numerous individuals:
Rob Bell, who mocked Christ’s virgin birth and
Christ’s 15 pronouncements concerning hell; Harold
Camping, with his “End of the World” nonsense
back in May; and others. I make no apologies.
Heresy must be exposed (2 Timothy 4:2-4). Our
program is not a church service, but a newscast.
We report the headlines and cannot, and will not,
eliminate names mentioned by the media.
TBN furthermore banned any and all of our
programs on RECLAIMING AND RESTORING
BIBLICAL CHRISTIANITY. So I took Jack Van
Impe Presents off of TBN, and ordered our team
to begin finding other media outlets: up to 52
secular stations — for the same price we’ve been
paying TBN! We will be able to contract another
50 secular stations for the price we paid TBN.
Imagine! A total of 102 stations for the same
amount of money I paid TBN!
Meanwhile, the outpouring of love and
support from our viewers, friends, and partners
has been ABSOLUTELY OVERWHELMING.

Canada has been virtually
destroyed by the false gospels
such as those perpetrated by
Rick Warren and the more covert
ones like James Dobson. That
is because Canada was fertile
soil for this sort of thing. The
real Gospel has been integrated
with the humanistic, apathetic
spirits that rule our land. In fact,
the city I live in is the Canadian
head office for the Willow Creek
Association. People I used to
look up to spiritually have fallen
for these false gospels.
Here is one thing that is
of supreme importance, and
I don’t know if you are aware
of it: Many, many people are
unaware that their church
has been taken over by Rick
Warren’s gospel. It is usually
only the scripturally literate,
older mature Christians (the
ones “purpose driven” methods
want the church to shed) that
discern that something is
wrong. Did you know that there
are websites where anyone can
go to see if their church has
become part of this movement?
