A
s we head toward the end of the
summer—and enter perhaps the
best three weather months of the
year for golf, tennis and other outdoor
activities—it is time to reflect on where we
stand as a club.
The past year has been a time of change, and transition.
We have made significant strides toward improving our golf
course—personally, I think it’s in the best condition of the 16
years in which I have been a member. We have addressed
the need to replace aging equipment at the Athletic Club—
leasing new treadmills earlier in the year, and approving the
leasing of 10 new machines a month ago (four treadmills,
three cross trainers, two seated ellipticals and a rowing
machine). New pool furniture has been ordered and will be
arriving soon. We will be installing tennis court lights on three
courts during the next two months.
economy—we are surviving. But it will take more time, and
more members, for us to thrive.
One of the biggest keys toward our financial security is
membership growth. And the best way for us to add new
members is by referrals from our existing members. If you
know of people who may be interested in joining, contact
Director Mark Owades, who is the chairman of our
membership committee.
We have added 60 new golf members during the past year
with our membership drive and our no initiation fee offering.
More than half of the new members have been individual
memberships—a classification that we added in 2011
because it was requested by prospective members. While
we have added significant number of members, we lost
nearly that amount during the economic downturn, and
with the six-month resignation policy. Since January 1st, for
instance, we have added 17 members, but lost nine on the
six-month resignation list and another two who couldn’t pay

Updated Cart Key Procedure
As many of you know, a few months back we started taking the
keys out of the carts and keeping them in the golf shop for two
reasons. First was for safety. Too many unauthorized people were
taking carts without the golf shops knowledge or approval and this
was unacceptable. Secondly, this was a way to make people
check into the golf shop and let us know who was on the property
and who wasn’t. Going forward though there will be one little
change, the keys still won’t be in the carts but rather they will be
with the Golf Service Attendants at the bag drop. If the Attendant is
not present extra keys will be in the Golf Shop. Even with this new
procedure in place, please remember that all golfers must check
into the Golf Shop prior to playing the golf course or practicing on
the range.
We Need Your Help
We have this beautiful fleet of new golf carts and they will last us for
years if we take care of them and maintain them properly. However, in the first month several of them have already gone to
maintenance in need of some minor body and alignment issues.
The alignment issues are caused by carts going over curbs and
speed bumps at high speeds so please remember to slow down

On Monday July 9th, Fountaingrove played host to the USGA
Women’s Amateur Qualifier which brought 78 of the best female
golfers in from all over the Western United States. These women
played a very difficult golf course from the green tees with the
greens rolling at 11 on the Stimp meter. The contestants were all
playing for 1 of the 8 qualifying spots and it took a score of 75 to get
into the final 2 spots. Grace Na was the day’s medalist with an even
par score of 72. Fountaingrove’s own Courtney Soekland qualified
with a score of 74. Jennifer Hirano was the final qualifier after the
third playoff hole, due in part to the course knowledge offered from
her caddie, our very own Chris Murphy. Courtney and the rest of the
qualifiers will be heading back to The Country Club in Cleveland
Ohio from August 6th - 12th for the USGA Women’s Amateur. Best of
luck Courtney.
The NCGA held their Annual Parent/Child Championship on July 7th
and 8th with over 50 teams competing in 3 flights. The winning team
in the Director Flight was Dan Laskoski and his son Tim with a 2 day
total score of 7 under par. They opened with a score of 70 and that
put them in a tie for 3rd and 5 strokes behind the leaders. Dan and

s August leads us into the peak of
Summer, we can always count on
increased temperatures and longer
days. Great for golf outings and twilight rounds
but stressful for the turf and maintenance team
alike.
The good news is with modern irrigation systems, we can be very
accurate and efficient with our watering practices, not as good as
rain drops falling from above, but as an industry we are getting very
good at manufacturing sprinklers, nozzles, pumps and computer
controlled irrigation systems.
To date in 2012, we have made leaps and bounds in the
improvement and repair of our own irrigation system. Back in
January, we replaced a 50 horse power motor in our upper pump
station adjacent to the pond on hole #7, and a 2 horse power
pump inside our lower pump station, which draws water from our
pond on hole #18. A series of 6 inch pressure regulating valves that
maintain a consistent and safe pressure for our plastic PVC pipes on
holes #13 and #14 were serviced in March. We also calibrated
dozens of 1 ½ inch pressure regulating valves on holes #8, #15 and
#16. Even with all the valve work complete, we made the
observation that our nightly irrigation that is controlled by our
central computer was not operating properly. The solution was a
series of software reprogramming that once complete allowed our
computer to understand the hydraulics of the golf course or more
simply put how many sprinklers it’s possible to turn on at once, while
still maintaining design pressure and flow. Even more simply put,
now all the sprinklers run at night as the irrigation designer initially
intended.
In July, we conducted pump efficiency tests on all of our pumps,
including our wells. That in turn has produced cost analysis data for
each individual pump which is important because, as we all know
our PG&E bills can often induce sticker shock. The next step is,
checking each individual nozzle on all of our 1500 plus sprinklers
around the golf course. I’ll have to get back to everyone on the
progress of that next August, stay tuned!

lub Update
There are some exciting events coming
up in the Athletic Club in August and
September. We hope you are able to participate
in some of the fun events and that everyone is
enjoying their summer vacations.
First, we will be having a Skin Care Event with our esthetician, Tina
Mrozek. The theme of this event is Parent and Teen Skin Care Tips.
It will be held on Sunday, August 19th, from 1 - 2 pm in the
Gatehouse. Please, sign up at the Front Desk or contact Tina.
Next, we will be having a Tennis Trunk Show on Monday, August 27th.
The time is yet to be determined, but watch your weekly club emails
for more specific information. We are excited to bring some
shopping opportunities to the Athletic Club and plan to have a lot
of fun at this event!
On September 1st, we will be launching a new check in protocol on
the Tennis Courts. You will continue to book courts through Tennis
Connect and will now have courtside check in for members. Guests
will still need to be taken to the Athletic Club to check in. Also, due
to the increased use of our tennis facilities, beginning on September
1st, will be a No-Show Fee of $5 for reservations made and not
attended. More details have come out on the weekly emails, and
are available in print at the Athletic Club front desk as well.
Last month, in the Fountain Pen, David Reese mentioned that the
Board has voted to move forward with the first phase of a long term
plan to address equipment maintenance at the Athletic Club by
beginning to replace equipment. If you have questions about what
will be happening, please feel free to stop by my office for a chat.
Please, be patient as we work out the details of this phase, but
expect to see some improvements coming to the Athletic Club in
the coming future.
Below is my editorial for the month. Please, take the time to read
about this adventure and remind yourself the many reasons why
you choose to be active. Be well!
Perceived Limits—Arthur Webb, Record Breaking
Ultramarathoner, Age 70
For the past 4 years, I have been the support crew
chief for Arthur Webb for the Badwater Ultramarathon.
Badwater is described by Adventurecorps™ as:
“The world’s toughest foot race,” this legendary event pits
approximately 90 of the world’s toughest athletes-runners,
triathletes, adventure racers, and mountaineers-against one
another and the elements. Covering 135 miles (217km) non-stop
from Death Valley to Mt. Whitney, CA in temperatures up to 130F
(55c), it is the most demanding and extreme running race offered
anywhere on the planet.
including this year when he broke his
personal record and created a new
age record by more than 14 hours
(world record being researched
presently). He has had challenging
years too. In 2003, he left the course
due to overheating, summited Mt.
Whitney to cool off, and then finished
the course 90 hours after he had
started it. Under all circumstances, he has completed the race.
“Commit and finish”, he says.
When you ask him about his amazing
feat in the 2012 race, he smiles and
says, “I had planned something special
for this year”. Something special for
sure! I have been a trainer and coach
since the early 1990s and I have never
seen anything like it. This man is not
without the standard diagnoses of a 70
year old. He deals with severe spinal
stenosis, as an example, however he
refuses to let this limit what he can do.
He trains 15 - 20 miles per day in all weather conditions and heat
trains in a sauna to prepare for the heat of Death Valley. He spends
quality time with his wife, Christine, and his children and
grandchildren.
Arthur runs on behalf of the Valley of the Moon Children’s Home.
Running, nor his troubled childhood, define who he is, however his
accomplishments do. Arthur Webb is a legendary human being,
and I am lucky enough to call him both my friend, and my hero.

This is a tough race for anyone, but for Arthur, it is an annual event

consecutive years of the 135 mile race. He has had great years,

Message from Wendy Tigner, 3.0 Team Captain
Our women’s USTA 3.0 team had a successful season this year!
We finished in 4th place, which gave us a chance to play in the
first round of playoffs! We played the first place team, which was
in St. Helena. Our match score was 1-4, but there were
hard-fought matches played, several going to 3rd sets! We ended
our season in 4th place overall! Our team practiced very hard
together, taking many clinics from our great tennis pro, Paul
Shepherd, along with spending many hours on the courts
practicing together. I’m very proud of our season this year and all
the players on this team!

any members have expressed their
concerns regarding the food quality
and level of service in Bogey’s. We are
very fortunate to have members that are willing
to directly communicate their dissatisfaction to
management and I’d like everyone to know that
I share the same concerns regarding quality and
service. My management style is to be as transparent as possible to
our members and with that being said, I’d like to explain why it has
taken us longer to reach our goals in our Food and Beverage
operation.
returned to limited duty per his doctor’s recommendation. Upon his
return, his top priority was to execute a final menu tasting for the
Food and Beverage Committee and Board of Directors with the
ultimate goal of rolling out this new menu along with improved
levels of service on Friday, June 29th. The final tasting took place on
Thursday, June 14th and it was not successful. The Food and
Beverage Committee unanimously decided to delay the new menu
rollout until a successful final menu tasting was executed. Our
Executive Chef reinjured his knee during the unsuccessful menu
tasting and was on a medical leave of absence returning to work
on July 30th.
Fountaingrove’s Food and Beverage Committee began working
with our Executive Chef this past February on developing a new
menu for Bogey’s. This menu was developed around a Sonoma
Bistro theme using fresh, handmade, and local ingredients of which
numerous food tastings took place over many months to determine
menu items. This new menu has been complete for quite some time
and has several healthy options.
On July 31st, our Executive Chef decided to pursue opportunities
outside of Fountaingrove. With his departure, we have begun the
process of finding a suitable replacement. Quality, consistency, and
friendly attentive service are my expectations and improvements to
our food and beverage operation are long overdue. I would like to
assure everyone that real changes are coming; it is just taking
longer than we anticipated. I will keep everyone informed as to our
progress and look forward to many positive changes to
Fountaingrove’s dining experience!
Our Executive Chef had knee surgery in April for an injury that
occurred on the job. He took a medical leave to recover and

Food & Beverage Minimums continue to be the single most asked
question in Billing. As a result, we are making every effort to make
sure the minimum information is readily available. We still see that
members have challenges meeting the minimums at the end of
their quarters, so we’ve come up with a simple routine that will
hopefully help members reach their minimums:
purchases plus beverages). Dinner for a family of 4, including 2 small
children, twice per quarter.
Golf Minimum: Dinner/Lunch for 2 plus beverages once a week in
Bogey’s; dinner for 2 once a month at Lakeview; dinner for a family
of 4 on a Theme Night Buffet once per month (4 buffet purchases
plus beverages). Dinner for a family of 4, including 2 small children,

Simply put, if you are an Athletic Club Member, come dine with us
monthly. If you are a Golf Member, come dine with us weekly.
