President’s Letter — Randy Seelye
D
uring 2012 we got a rough introduction
on the Board of Directors to an issue
that either hadn’t created significant
Problems—or hadn’t surfaced—in the past:
Members behaving badly.
We had to form the club’s first Disciplinary
Committee, as outlined in the bylaws, and had to deal with
several complaints starting in the spring. To this date we have
handled four disciplinary matters and have two others pending.
I will not speak to the specifics because of the confidentiality
involved, except to say they ranged from problematic to very
serious. The Disciplinary Committee is a sub-committee of the
Board that includes one Board Member and two Voting Golf
Members and the General Manager. This committee makes
recommendations to the Board, which then determines if action
should be taken.
the Board to fill the vacancies. Those interested in running for a
Board seat have until October 4th to apply. Voting Golf Members
should have received a September 20th nominations letter in the
mail.
Interestingly the number of candidates seeking a position on the
Board diminishes for a public election. We had only had four
candidates for three seats in 2010 and 2011, and we had three
candidates for three seats this year before the Board re-opened
the election process. The last two times the Board had a single
seat to fill by appointment we had eight and seven applicants
each.
We do have a Board seat to fill by appointment with the recent
resignation of Director John Theilade. However the Board has not
yet decided when to fill the position; it will likely be after the
election.
*
Disciplinary actions can be significant—one Athletic Club
Member was expelled from the club—or can result in warnings to
those involved. The goal is to have a well-functioning club in
which members respect each other and our staff members and
treat each other with courtesy. A number of the complaints
came from staff members; other complaints were members
complaining about other members. If the issues are minor, of
course, that can be dealt with quickly by the General Manager.
Complaints have involved behavior on the golf course and at the
Athletic Club or in Bogey’s.
Our hope is that the Disciplinary Committee will not be needed in
the future.

In my last president’s letter, I mentioned that my term as your
president would be over in late September. But surprise, I’m still in
office! This happened because the Board decided to delay the
Annual Meeting until November 16th, to coincide with golf
awards night. New Board officers are not selected until the first
Board meeting after the Annual Meeting, so that will be in late
November.
The Annual Meeting will be quite important this year. Not only will
we announce the results of the election for three Board seats, but
we will present a State of the Club address, including a review of
Club finances. We hope that by late October an audit of 2011 will
be complete and we can present results to members. This is the
first audit of our books since we became a member-owned club.
We are also having auditors do a review of the 2009 and 2010
books, which were not completed in prior years.
The election is also crucial. At the moment, we have two applicants for the election for three seats on the Board of Directors.
We need four to five applicants to give members a choice in the
voting. If we come up short on candidates, then it will be up to

We reached a milestone last week when our new tennis court
lights were turned on for the first time. This $100,000 project,
funded by our Project and Equipment fees over the past two
years, is important for the future of the club. We have about 200
tennis players among our 1,000 member families (including Golf
and Athletic Club) and lighting three tennis courts will make our
facilities among the very best in the county.
Our tennis courts are unique because each court is separated
from other courts by location and fencing. Most tennis courts in
the county are side by side, which is very disruptive when balls fly
onto adjacent courts. Now with lights, the courts will become
useable year round in the evenings, which will expand both the
use of the courts and the ability to have more competitive
events.
Timing was important for the lights installation. Permits from the
City of Santa Rosa were obtained a number of years ago—
before Varenna was finished—and they expired in 2011. That was
why we had electrical work done for the lights last year, which
extended the time in which we could complete this project. Had
we not used the lighting permits we might not have been able to
get them again.
As a former tennis player (damaged knees forced a switch to
golf), I appreciate how much our tennis program has grown
under Tennis Professional Paul Shepherd’s leadership. My daughter played tennis at Santa Rosa High School more than a decade
ago and when I practiced with her we had every Fountaingrove
court to ourselves, not to mention dusty courts with tattered nets;
the courts were vacant and seldom used. Now a reservation
system is critical to regulate course use. We have come
a long way!

Men’s Tournament Results
The Annual Men’s Match Play Championship was a season
long event that began way back in May and ended in
September. The tournament was divided into Four Flights of
16 players each based on Format Type (Gross or Net), Tees
(Black, Green, and White), and Handicap (+1 to 36). There
were a lot of great matches played this year that
culminated with the following results for the Final Matches:
Championship Flight—Alex Reno defeated Ben Fritz 3 & 2
First Flight—Michael Jurian defeated Dan Laskoski 6 & 4
Second Flight—Bill Lycette defeated David Holland 4 & 2
Third Flight—Randy Seelye defeated Don Russell 2 & 1
In September we also held the Annual Men’s Stroke Play
Championship which was a 36 Hole event held on Saturday
and Sunday, September 8th & 9th. We divided the

all is officially here with the passing of the
equinox on September 22nd and with its
arrival some noticeable changes can be
observed out on the golf course. Most notable
will be our fall aerification practices starting the
first week in October.
•
•
•
Greens will be aerated with ½ inch hollow tines beginning on
Monday, October 1st and scheduled for completion on
Tuesday the 2nd.
Fairways will be aerated with ¾ inch hollow tines beginning on
Tuesday, October 2nd and scheduled for completion on Friday
the 5th. The golf course will only be closed on Monday and
Tuesday. Please be aware this process will continue throughout
the rest of the week in and around regular play.
Tees and Approaches will be aerated with 5/8 inch hollow tines
beginning the following week on Monday, October 8th and
scheduled for completion on Tuesday the 9th. The golf course
will be open for regular play on Tuesday the 9th and aeration
will continue in and around regular play on this day.
Aeration is a necessary process in order to provide quality playing
conditions year round for our membership and the maintenance
team would like to thank everyone in advance for their patience as
we work diligently to maintain our aerification schedule. In recent
months a new equipment lease package was approved for the golf
course maintenance department. Our club was fortunate enough
to acquire two Toro fairway mowers, Toro triplex greens mower and
four Toro utility carts loaned to the Olympic Club for the U.S. Open
Championship. The equipment was new out of the factory, loaned
to the Olympic Club, used exclusively for the championship and
then turned around for sale at a discounted price. With the board of
director’s approval we managed to save $42,000 by jumping on the
opportunity and added an additional fairway mower to our fleet.
In the past we would operate our single fairway mower four to five
days a week, mowing each hole an average of two and a half
times per week without the ability to maintain all the fairways in a
single day. With two fairway mowers we now have the ability to
mow all the fairways three times per week and efficiently mow them
all in one day. This will produce a more consistent playing surface
fairway to fairway and improve the definition of the golf course tee
to green… Money well spent!
See you on the golf course!

he last few weeks have been very exciting
for two of our WGL ladies. Pam Petersen and
Elise Wilson each had a hole-in-one.
Pam’s Ace was on hole #9 and it was on Guest
Day! Elise got her impressive hole-in-one on #17!
Congratulations and welcome to the hole-in-one
club!
In the September Ace & Putter competition, Elise Wilson won the
Ace award, shooting a net 68. Sandy Kelly won the Putter award
with just 29 putts. Great job, Elise and Sandy!

Closest to the pin on #12 was won by Grace Suk.
Wining first place, was the team of Sandy Kelly, Barbara
Stevens, Ilene Kristoff and MJ Murphy.
The second place team was Ja-Net Hintzen-Holland, Marianna
Green, Paulette Vadon and Diane Ehni.
Finishing in third place were Grace Suk, Pam Petersen, Linda
Sweet and Ann Rogalski.
And the “Turkey” prize for the last place team, with the help of
a blind draw, was the team of Elise Wilson, Carol Willard and
Madeline Russell.
When all the “Are you a Turkey” forms were tallied, I was so
excited to be awarded the individual “Turkey” Award!
Our Harvest Tournament was September 27th. It was a beautiful Fall
day, perfect for playing our last tournament of the season. Each
player was given a rules sheet titled “Are you a Turkey”. This was to
help us keep track of our penalty shots, 3 putts and other shots we
would like to forget. So as we made a bad shot, we got to add that
to our tally of bad shots.
A huge thank you to Kathy White and Karen Field for all their hard
work to make this tournament so much fun. They did a fabulous job
on the Turkey themed prizes and decorations.
After golf we were treated to a lovely salad buffet in the Lakeview
room that was decorated with a “Turkey” theme. Following lunch,
prizes were presented to the following winners:
See you on the course!
Our last Guest Day of the season is Thursday, November 1st. You
may invite up to three guests to join you for golf and lunch.
Happy Halloween

Athletic Club Director — Angela Henderson
W
elcome to Fall! Our weather has
certainly changed quickly this
year and the darker evening
hours are upon us. We are excited about
our new tennis court lights which will keep
the courts available into the evening hours
through the winter. October is Breast Cancer Awareness
Month and I wanted to take a moment to acknowledge all
of the men and women that have been effected by breast
cancer. Around the world, you will see pink ribbons signifying
support for the fight against breast cancer. At the Athletic
Club, we will be putting important facts and new motivating
statements on our digital bulletin board… we are, after all, a
“health” club.
Since I have become Athletic Director I have faced many
challenges, several of which we have been able to
overcome. Two challenges which we have persisted have
been club cleanliness, and the personal television monitors
(on the equipment in the front row of the cardio area). I
want to share how we are addressing both issues. Beginning
with club cleanliness, we have decided to collect quotes
from new professional janitorial companies and are in the
process of selecting one. I have been meeting with and
working with each front desk employee and helping them
understand the importance of their duties and teaching
them how to meet member expectations in the area of club
cleanliness. Also, I am presently organizing two “cleaning
parties” with the staff in October and December. This will be
an opportunity for us to get some deep cleaning done that
is difficult to accomplish to during our daily tasks.
As far as the television monitors go, we have collected
quotes for repair/replacement. Unfortunately, it is cost
prohibitive to replace them and repair is not possible
according to the technician that has examined them. Since
the board approved to move forward with replacing
equipment, we made the decision to forego fixing the
monitors since some of the new equipment will have
monitors as well. I apologize for the frustration and
inconvenience this causes and hope we can get this
resolved as soon as possible.
We have a few new staff members to welcome! Katie Dixon
has joined us to replace Tiffany in our massage department.
Katie is a great massage therapist and the members that
have tried her so far have been very pleased. Kelly Roberts
is a new cycling instructor teaching Wednesday and Friday
mornings at 5:45 am. She has great energy and is excited to
join our team. Merritt Wright has been a substitute instructor
for us for a while and is now on the schedule (by member
request) and continuing to sub classes. Please, pick up an
updated copy of the schedule for winter on October 15th,
or check with the front desk to find out when our new
instructors are teaching.
Be well!

umba for the Rest of Us
Zumba is known as the “Party Yourself into Shape”
workout, the one you can’t wait to do again. We feel
energetic rhythms and burn tons of calories in this
moderate-impact activity. And we have loads of fun
moving to simple, easy-to-understand variants of mostly
Latin dance steps...all modified for fitness first. The Zumba
spirit—music and motion—is infectious, propelling group
enthusiasm, and your results!
In it’s 10-year history, Zumba has broadened its reach to
include people of all ages and athletic abilities. You don’t
have to be a dancer either! I never was...before Zumba.
Ideal for beginners and the “silver fitness” crowd (baby
boom and above), Zumba Gold uses slightly slower tempos,
enhances our balance skills, and was designed to respect
6
issues associated with a more seasoned body. It is also more
beginner-friendly. And as your instructor is Gold too, it’s a
perfect match.
Aqua Zumba adds the excitement of Zumba to the resistive
exercise benefits of working out in water. Moving through
water adds a powerful upper body benefit that dancing
through air can’t provide, again with moderate impact. It's
an ideal activity for young and “gold” alike. Spirited music
inspires our energy and brings the party spirit to our
wonderful heated pool.
Both programs are great for beginners, and fun for all. Our
Aqua Zumba class is Tuesdays at 9 am, and Zumba Gold is
Wednesdays at 9 am in the Gatehouse. Try one out soon!

General Manager — David Reese
I
am pleased to announce that we have a
new Executive Chef! Paul Schroeder comes to
us from Monte’s Rotisserie and Bar in Santa
Rosa of which he has been employed since 2005.
He helped open the restaurant as a line cook,
advanced to sous chef, and is currently their chef
de cuisine. Paul has worked professionally in
restaurants since 1993 in just about every kitchen position available.
Paul comes highly recommended and possesses a lot of
enthusiasm, confidence, and passion for cooking and is excited to
join the Fountaingrove Team. Paul was born in Humboldt County,
graduated from Laguna High School, and completed Santa Rosa
Junior College’s culinary program. Paul is not only known for his
culinary creativity, but also his big heart and ability to make those
around him laugh. He lives in Santa Rosa and enjoys bike riding,
great wine, and grilling with his friends. His first day of employment
will be November 1, 2012. Please join me in welcoming Paul to the
Club!
I am also pleased to announce that Bret Smallwood has been
promoted to Clubhouse Manager. Bret has been employed at
Fountaingrove for the past year and has done an outstanding job
as the Club’s Banquet Captain. Bret worked for United Airlines for
many years serving as an International First Class Flight Attendant
and has a strong understanding of customer service. Bret is also a
businessman as he owns his own wedding and event planning
company, Runaway Brides. He has a strong work ethic and has
earned the respect of the Fountaingrove team. Bret’s top priority will
be to address and dramatically improve the Club’s front of the
house service levels and take a “hands-on” approach to floor
management. His first day as Clubhouse Manager will be
October 1, 2012.
I am confident that these two additions will take our culinary
programs to new levels as our members deserve much more. We
live in Sonoma County and need to embrace the wine country
lifestyle. My ultimate goal is for each of you to have a sense of pride
that has never been achieved at Fountaingrove; a sense of pride to
bring guests to the Club. This year has been a year of significant
clean-up and transition and we have many challenges ahead. I am
fully committed to overcome these challenges and build a
reputation of being one of the premier clubs in the North Bay.
Fountaingrove has an impressive footprint and the makings for a
great club. We must stabilize our business, continue with much
needed capital improvements, and increase revenues to allow for a
higher level of personalized service and offerings as expected in a
private club environment. My door is always open, so please stop
by and let me know how we are doing. Thanks for your support of
Fountaingrove!
