I suspect by now you all may be
getting weary about the fireworks
that I create about the New Website. It is very near to being complete. I can't stress how important
this tool is. Tools like this are the
future for any artist that truly
wants to expand the exposure of
their art.
The website is going
to be key for a lot of different
things….all pertaining to communication between the
Art Alliance and you. Yes, you the reader, our member
Leagues, the individual artist, the art appreciator, and
everyone that is interested in our Arizona art scene.
We are constantly improving and expanding the services
and products offered by the Arizona Art Alliance to our
Member Leagues, Artists, and the Community.
For our Member Leagues, we provide additional marketing punch beyond what they produce directly within their
organizations. The Member Groups listing on the Alliance
website, http://azartalliance.com/member-groups/ directs visitors to league websites or provides contact information. Member Leagues can also take advantage of the
Alliance Events Calendar, http://azartalliance.com/events
-calendar/ to promote their upcoming events. Visitors
click on the Calendar itself for further details.
For our individual Artists, the Alliance Newsletter offers the opportunity to be showcased as a featured
artist.
For our Artists, as well as our Leagues, we are continuing to work on different tools that provide opportunities to exhibit and market their artwork to a wider audience. The Jury Process and Entry to our new ONLine Gallery will be done on an ongoing basis. The ONLine Gallery will be updated every quarter to allow for
even billing of $50/6 mos. Take a look at http://
azartalliance.com/sign-up-for-the-artist-gallery/ Signing up is easy and affordable and a great way to assist
in getting market exposure for your art. We will be
offering those who enroll in the ON-Line Gallery a
chance at a presence on our Home Page as an added
no cost benefit. Notice the artist
Our much-expanded Alliance Newsletter offers another
way for Member Leagues to share their events or publish
informational articles.
Participation in our Member Leagues is increased because
individual artists who wish to benefit from the offerings
of the Alliance must first belong to one of our Member
Groups.

now featured, Lucy Dickens. The ON-Line Gallery will
not only provide our Arizona Juried Member Artists local
exposure, but exposure everywhere. Marketing both
locally and worldwide is important; art is universal and
you never know where opportunity may come from.
And part of the trick is to keep it affordable.
will notice that this call is happening well in advance of
the exhibition. This is so you have plenty of time to
plan your schedule and your art production. It also
gives the opportunity to publicize the participating artists in our PR effort and those efforts that we coordinate with the Holland Gallery and local media. We
want to give every opportunity for our participating
artists to get some exposure, which takes lead-time.
We have just enabled our Website,
http://azartalliance.com/juried-artists-2/, offering more
jury opportunities to those artists that wish to achieve
juried status.
Look for Alliance exhibits at the WHAM Gallery in Surprise next March 2016 and at the Vision Gallery in
Chandler in July and August of 2016. There will also be
a festival opportunity, http://azartalliance.com/
eventscalendar/?qemmonth in October 2015 for our
members. This event has drawn thousands of people
the past three years and will be a great opportunity for
those that participate to display their talents to the
public.
Our application process for entering an upcoming exhibit
can also be done completely online now, as well as
through the older method of printing out an application,
and mailing it in with your payment and a CD of your
images.
For the Community, the AZ Art Alliance continues to
team with our Member Leagues to support Outreach
Programs that serve special-needs individuals, veterans,
seniors, life-care residents, Alzheimer’s patients, and atrisk youth.
So, as you can see, we are
planning ahead and filling a
future calendar of events well
in advance. We will strive to
do this with all of our artist
opportunities wherever possible.
Take a few minutes and look around, azartalliance.com.
There’s a lot going on and there are lots of seeds planted
for our members to take advantage of. I was reading
today in the Republic Newspaper that Google, the
world's largest internet search
engine, is going to give priority
to websites that are Mobile
Device Friendly. This means
that the website is formatted
so it can easily be read from a
smart phone or other mobile
devices. Is this important?
Yes!....some 50% of all internet searches are now done
from a mobile device, not a computer. And this number
is growing with projections showing that, within a few
years, 80% of internet searches will be done from mobile
devices. AND YES, azartalliance.com is formatted for
mobile devices. If you haven't done so, go to our site
and take a look from your mobile smart phone or pad.
You will be surprised at how easy it is to read and get
around.
GREAT NEWS FOR ART LOVERS
The Arizona Art Alliance Online Gallery is now
available on the Arizona Art Alliance website. The
website features great art from our talented artists.
Our Online Gallery offers the consumer the opportunity to deal with the artist directly with no middleman or commissions added to the price.
By the way, the Call to Artists for our Fall exhibit at the
Holland Gallery in the North Scottsdale/Carefree area is
now being offered Online or Hardcopy. Sorry for a few
glitches at first, but those have been worked out. You

Changes for the
League Representative Meetings
The Az. Art Alliance will be changing League Representative
Meetings to once every quarter instead of monthly. The Board
of Directors for the Alliance will still meet monthly as usual
and on the last meeting of the quarter (every three months)
we will invite the League Representatives for that month's
Board Meeting. That meeting will be abbreviated so as to allow time for any Rep that has questions or wants to address
the entire Board or any of its members .
All of our Board meetings are open to any rep any time they
want to attend. There will just be no formal invitation or Rep
Meeting the first two monthly meetings of any quarter.
Our next meeting with the Reps will be Friday, June 19th
at 9:30 am at our Tempe Headquarters.
Don't worry, we will send out a
reminder and the “coffee
will be on”

“ENRICHING LIFE THROUGH ART”
Alliance News
When the time came to choose a college, Arizona
State was my top pick because it was the opposite of
where I was coming from – a small town on the southern coast of Maine. I was ready for sunny days in the
big city. I yearned for an experience filled with more
culture and diversity. Art had been a constant in my
life ever since I was a little girl so I couldn’t imagine
studying any other major; however, after my first year
I became scared to pursue a degree in studio art. I didn’t want to end up the “starving artist” (whatever that
meant), so I changed paths and selected a new major
of Sociology. At the time, it felt like the right choice.
Now I look back and sometimes wish I had just stuck
with what I loved. During my junior year I started a
part-time job for a health insurance company and
ended up staying in that industry for nearly the next
10 years although I never felt passionate about the
work I was doing. I recently became a new mother
which quickly changed my
priorities. Being at home
with my daughter was the
only way I could imagine
raising her so I quit my job
and have been enjoying
every precious moment
since. I am excited to be
volunteering for Arizona
Art Alliance - it gives me the opportunity to feel connected to my previous passion of art while being the
mom I wish to be.

“ENRICHING LIFE THROUGH ART”
Alliance News
Ed Ciolina was born in Germany and after his retirement he
moved to Arizona in 1997 where he became a U.S. Citizen. In the
year 2006 he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. He participated in a workshop of the Parkinson’s support group and this is
when his new passion evolved. In that workshop a colleague asked
him to finish a painting, because he was leaving for vacation. This
was Ed’s starting challenge.
Ed participated in several juried art shows, is a member of the Fountain Hills Art League and the Arizona Art Alliance. He had several exhibits in the Fountain Hills Community Center, the Fountain Hills Town
Hall, the Fountain View Village, and in November 2014 his first solo
show at the Olney Gallery in Phoenix. His next Solo Show will be at the
Fountain Hills Community Center during the month of June, where he
can show over 50 paintings. To raise the awareness for Parkinson’s he
is offering the proceeds of this show for the Parkinson’s research. From
July 14th to September 4th he got an invitation for a solo show at the
University Club of Phoenix. In August,
during the exhibition Prof. Dr. Porter
of the University San Francisco will be
talking about “Parkinson’s and Creativity” during an evening with “Salon
of the Senses”.
This artist is truly passionate about
his work. Ed’s art shows strong inner
Sound of Color
feelings and he is painting out of his
heart. He expresses political or other statements with “no comment”. Ed
is very inventive in new techniques and loves mixed media as well. His
preferences are illusions. In his abstract fantasy art he lends viewers a
hand to understand what he is showing, and to develop more own fantasies.
These meditative paintings recreate the artist’s own conception of the
meditative world which the viewer “reads” looking at the painting. This
conception is implemented in the painting as a message which leads the

viewer to beauty, peace, and tranquility. There are no questions, there
are no answers, just look at the painting, and you will find out. The form, structure, and Continued on page 11

the rhythm in their proportions are dissolved in the vibrations of a spiritual light what creates a complete harmony. This harmony, as a part
from the meditative art, will bring comfort to people who have such
paintings at their places. Looking at these paintings will help to reduce
their stress using the visualization and imagery techniques which are a
traditional part from the meditation.
The talented artist shows clear characteristics and his unique art gained
already some attention from the local media and experts.

Alliance News
The Fountain Hills Art League is
a group of talented artists and
friends who strive to help one
another and give art back to
the community. Founded in
1980, it meets the first Monday
of each month to share information, activity calendars
and enjoy a demonstration or speaker that relates to
our needs and techniques as artists. It hosts gallery and
studio trips several times a year.
Bud Heiss
Bonnie Schweihs is the current President and the league
is sponsored by local businesses and the members. It
has become a major influence in our community.
Justine Mantor-
Weekly workshops are held at the FH Community Center
on the first and third Tuesdays of each month, autumn
through spring. The open studio is available for all members to work on their own or join into a particular lesson
being led by the talented league members. The FH Community Center hosts several juried and open shows as
well, complete with receptions and public display of
work.
Throughout the year members are given opportunities
to display art at different venues in town. The Town Hall
hosts four 3 month showings for our artists each year.
Everyone is invited to view this display during normal
business hours.

adopted our league and a continual show hangs there with
receptions held to feature particular artists each month.
From October through April, on the first Saturday of each
month, our artists show and sell their work at Art in the Park
in the Fountainside Plaza. Our beautiful weather and the lure
of the lake draw visitors to shop with our artists.
But the crème de la crème is the Tour de Artistes held each
March. The public and art collectors are invited to visit our
artists’ homes and studios to enjoy and purchase our latest
works. Treasures of sculpture, watercolor, oil painting, jewelry
and gift items are displayed and sold. This venue allows the
league to sponsor scholarships or contribute to the art funds
of schools in Fountain Hills. This year gift certificates were
given to each teacher in the middle and high school.

This month the Az. Art Alliance Newsletter was proud
to feature Fountain Hills Art League as part of a program for the newsletter to introduce you to one of the
Arizona Art Alliance Member Leagues monthly. The
Alliance is made up of individual artist organizations as
you know, but do you know what each league is involved in individually or what that group brings to their
community. What benefits do their members experience by belonging not only to their individual art
leagues but also by being a member of the Arizona Art
Alliance. It would be great to read about your individual league in the future issues, what a great way to tell
YOUR story and bring attention to the projects and
events of your particular league. So come on BLOW
YOUR HORN, tell us about your league and bring attention to what makes it great . Tell us about your shows
and your artists, what community projects your league
is involved in, what the future holds for your organization as well as the achievements of the past and let us
know what it means for your league to be a member of
the Arizona Art Alliance and don’t forget to show off
the art your members produce (send pic’s in JPEG format). Contact Kathy with your submission TODAY at
[email protected] don’t let this GREAT opportunity pass your league by. Our readers want to know
all about you and the newsletter is the perfect way to
SHARE YOUR STORY with them.

*Yupo is 100% recyclable, waterproof, tree-free synthetic
“paper.” It is sold in pads or by the sheet.
The pads usually come in 9 X 12 or 11 X 14 which can be
cut into smaller pieces, 5x7, 4x6, 5x5, etc.
Date: Saturday, May 23, 2015, 9:00 Am- 1:00Pm
Limited: 6- 10, Cost: $50.00
Description: Working on Yupo with liquid watercolors
and alcohol inks when applied to a non-porous surface is
simple and quick, resulting in beautiful and colorful
pieces of art in just a few minutes. The spontaneity of
these media and the variety of techniques are unpredictable, fascinating, and very exciting. Good news: Few mistakes cannot be rescued. With Yupo you can always just
wipe it off and begin again. Bad news: The process requires speed and patience, letting go but “sort of “ being
in control. It can be meditative and stimulating, and/or
frustrating and satisfying. Warning: This can be highly
addictive! Bio: Barbara is a member of SAL, AWA, APPA
and a juried member of Arizona Art Alliance. She has
taught college, university, and studio courses in her native Midwest and in Arizona since moving here in the late
80s. Barbara is the Professor in Charge of the Expressive
Arts Therapy Program at Ottawa University in Phoenix,
AZ. She has exhibited and won awards for her art in Iowa,
Minnesota, Nebraska, and Arizona. After painting in oils
for the first part of her art career, she now works primarily in acrylics, watercolors, pastels, and only recently discovered the challenges and delight of Yupo, liquid watercolors, and alcohol inks. Supplies: When you register, I
will email you a supply list. Most miscellaneous materials
will be furnished “Making art has provided me with
meaningful and purposeful ways to express myself and to
help others express themselves in similar ways. I use art
on a daily basis in a variety of forms in both my personal
and my professional life. Making art is not entirely about
the product but also the creative process, and most of all
about trusting that process.”

Art is defined as, “the quality, production, expression, or realm, according to

In Shanlee speak this
means, “Art is a way that people share
what is in their hearts, using a huge variety of mediums.”
Several weeks ago I accepted a lunch invitation from a lady named Blanche.

“best” places, I made a real effort to
look my best. I showered, put mousse in
my hair and wore my best yoga pants
combined with a somewhat elegant gray
tee-shirt. (I wore the shirt inside-out so
“Tony’s Fish and Chips” was barely noticeable.)
Some examples:
When I entered the fancy-pants restaurant, Blanche was already seated. Her
nose was pointed so high in the air, you
could see her brain through her nostrils.
Before I sat down, I noticed a beautiful
young woman seated at the table next to
ours. She had an exquisite cherry blossom tattoo extending from her wrist to
her shoulder. The colors in the tattoo
were gorgeous. I could almost smell the
sweet scent of the blossoms. I complimented her on her body art. THAT’S
WHEN THE TROUBLE STARTED.
Tell me this isn’t Art.
Blanche launched into a tirade, a LOUD

Wouldn’t this be helpful?
Before I stomped out, I showed Blanche
a picture of my tat.

I would hang this on my wall or my
shoulder.

HERE IS AN IDEA —ART MENTORING—IT CAN HELP YOUR ART ORGANIZATION
A Mentor is an advisor, counselor, guide, tutor, teacher even a guru according to the thesaurus on my computer. I would love to use “guru” for
my work, but it does not quite fit. I am one of those people that helps
young artists by helping them expand their knowledge in types of media,
with my experience in creating art and whatever encouragement or critique they may need. I work with all levels from advanced placement high
school art students to special-need students of all levels of ability. It is
amazing how art touches them and brings out their best.
Through mentoring, by many other artists and art teachers, young people expand and grow in an area that
they may not be able to do quite as well with the current diminished funding for the art in the schools . Art
enhances the student’s opportunities to engage in something they love and is a sneaky way of helping them
with so many other things without making it seem difficult—think geometric shapes, geometry and measuring, math. Critical thinking and problem solving is right in there as well. If you mentor advanced high school
art or college students you may pick up a few new thoughts and ideas too.
Artists like Joye DeGoede and Ann Rice have taught and mentored young students and encouraged them to
expand their talents. Because of these kinds of efforts the Desert Artists is gaining new younger artists. New
thinking, the newer art ideas to mix with the established culture in the arts. Established art techniques,
knowledge and concepts can be passed on to add to their creative ideas. An exciting concept—we help each
other and expand horizons.
It only takes your help with one student to help lift the mysterious veil between the world of art leagues, art
policies and politics, art world activities and the startup of a lifelong artistic enthusiasm in the young. They
will probably show you how art is created on the newer technologies and you will show them what the arts
are doing now and what art has gone through to get to where it is today. (My weekly mentoring often is like
just playing with how-to’s and what-for’s.) Give them a chance to join your group and thereby a chance to
apply to show with Alliance shows—it is a big deal for everyone!
Art Teachers/Professors at the schools are a good place to start—there is always some student that shows
real promise in the arts and may be in your league’s area, thus convenient for you and the student to work

Veterans Outreach Program
A Veteran Art Based Program Addressing the Invisible Wounds of War
Art is not only for decoration
Three years ago, the Arizona Art Alliance made a commitment to help our Veterans
suffering from the wounds of war, namely Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and Traumatic Brain Injury. The experience gained from our many years of applying art as an
aid to healing assured us the same benefits would apply to our Veterans. The original
15 Veterans recommended by the Phoenix Veteran Administration has grown to 60
Veterans per month in 4 separate locations.
This is an appeal to help us help our Veterans. Published reports state on average 22
Veterans commit suicide each day and is increasing, topping the number of troops killed in combat!
(Washington Post January 14, 2013) Transitioning Veterans may also struggle, with substance abuse, often leading to domestic violence and in some cases homelessness! Also, sharing this hardship are the many
family members, friends, neighbors and employers.
Our FREE Veteran art classes are experiencing amazing results, improving confidence, self-worth, reducing anxiety and having a better outlook on life. Several have gone on to better paying jobs. Thanks to our
volunteer instructors and their assistants, the Veteran Outreach Program continues to enjoy progress,. But
funding is an issue! After being encouraged by a grantor with a modest grant and exceeding their specified goals, we were denied additional funding to continue. We need your immediate help. Please make a
generous tax deductible donation and help by sharing our message of non-medicated successes through art
mentoring.
Please go to our website, www.azartalliance.com and on the opening page look for the big red button in
the lower right hand corner. It’s easy and it’s rewarding!
Please consider a donation today!
Go the www.azartalliance,com and click on the
red Pay Pal button in the lower right hand
corner. Thank you all for supporting our Veterans.
Thank you Outreach volunteers one and all!

The Alliance Veteran Outreach Program has become known to many Veteran Advocates
providing opportunities for potential collaboration. This would be a big step toward combining resources and furthering our Veteran Mission. Developing a productive and dedicated Advisory Board in order to insure associating with collaborator(s) whose mission is
supportive of ours, is essential.
I’m proud to introduce our newest Advisor Board Members;
Darcy Breault
A Veterans and active military advocate and daughter of an Army veteran. Employed at Rio
Salado College as a program advisor and serves as secretary treasurer for the Maricopa
County Community College’s District constituency group, MVET (Maricopa Veterans Education Taskforce). For more than four years she has worked with the greater Phoenix community of Veterans and active military. Darcy is a native of Illinois, holds a Bachelor degree in Creative Writing, and M.Ed. in Higher Education Leadership, and is currently
working on her M.A degree.
Natalia L. Hughson
Retired professor of the University of Advancing Technology (Tempe, AZ) taught Psychology of Creativity and behavior related courses. Adjunct Faculty of Chandler Gilbert Community College. She is a Medical Doctor and the co-author of numerous books, and is a
recognized artist, has exhibited her paintings and drawings worldwide, illustrated and designed her books.
Bio Lisa M. Wayman, PhD, RN
Dr. Wayman has been a registered nurse for over 20 years. During that time she has worked
to promote holistic healing through interventions that address the mind-body-spirit. Dr.
Wayman’s research has focused on the development of creating art as a purposeful intervention to promote health for people with chronic illness. She currently holds a postdoctoral position at the Phoenix VA Health Care System where she studies creating art as
an intervention for chronic pain.

day, so unfortunately for me, I can't be there for
During the summer of 2012 the Arizona Art Alliance began to germinate
the seeds of a new outreach to add to their repertoire of art programs
that had been in effect for many years. These established classes were
designed to help a variety of students that were disenfranchised or challenged in some way, but the new program was to be a “Thank You” for
military veterans. The Alliance began to put together a mission statement and curriculum ideas for the new program. Since we were thinking
of it not as a charity, but as a way to show appreciation for veterans and
recognize their service, we decided that all the supplies would be new,
and the lessons would be serious classical art concepts, to make it like a
regular paid workshop. We decided to make the curriculum build toward a goal of strong skill-building for the participants, not just dabbling
or “doing–your-own-thing”
the class. I wish I could be at two places at one
time. So I'm looking forward to seeing see you
next month. Thank you Rita for ALL you do for
the Vets. We really appreciate it.
Hi Rita.
The class you gave yesterday on colors and
the color wheel was GREAT.
I got more helpful, practical and insightful information out of that class
Than ANY art class I have ever taken. And I
want you to know how much I appreciate that
experience you afforded to us. And I just appreciate you in general. Thank you Rita for all the
kindness you bring to this world. PS. Sonny
says that for him, yesterday's class was also
the best art class HE'S ever taken.
We drafted a proposal and approached the Veterans Administration
Hospital in Phoenix where therapists had an art therapy room, where
veterans could make art, but without structured lessons. Our meeting
was serendipitous and timed perfectly, because some of their veterans were growing bored with the arts and crafts
and wanted something more. We made an agreement to start the program with 15 students the VA referred to us
