I am constantly reminded of the impact our Foundation has on the lives of the youth we serve. The Jeter’s Leaders from West Michigan and New York collaborated to host our biannual Jeter’s Leaders Leadership Conference in July. With the support of Goldman Sachs, the conference took place at the University of Chicago at Illinois. The event was attended by approximately 250 high school students from all over the country, looking for ways to bring positive change to their peers and their communities. All the attendees of the conference teamed up with Goldman Sachs Community Teamworks to restore James Ward Elementary school, the oldest elementary school in Chicago. I am excited to host our 11th Annual Celebrity Golf Classic in Tampa and want to thank John Fontana and the Seminole Tribe for, once again, being the Presenting Sponsor. I also want to thank Avila Golf & Country Club and TPC of Tampa Bay for hosting our Golf Tournaments. We have been very fortunate to have such amazing partners who have remained consistent over the years as well as bringing in new sponsors and supporters, which is necessary for the continued growth of my Foundation. Our Emcee, Harold Reynolds, has graciously remained the Emcee and supported this event each year, assisting us in reaching our fundraising goals. I am very honored to have Grammy Award winning singer, songwriter, actor and philanthropist, NE-YO, performing at the Launch Party. To receive the support of an artist of his caliber is very humbling and I am appreciative that NE-YO would take the time out of his busy recording schedule to support my Foundation’s efforts. I want to thank my sister, Sharlee, and her Turn 2 Staff, who do an excellent job assuring that the mission of the Foundation is accomplished from year to year. And to my many individual and corporate sponsors, I want to thank you for allowing me to continue to fulfill my dream of giving back to the community and helping young people achieve their dreams. Nevertheless, in 2008, after the triumph of his third album, “Year Of The Gentleman” reverberated around the world, NE-YO was cast in two big budget, major studio blockbusters that took him away from music for most of 2009, during their back-to-back shooting schedules: director Jonathan Liebesman’s Battle: Los Angeles (Columbia Pictures), which opened in 2011; and George Lucas’ World War II epic Red Tails (20th Century Fox), the chronicle of the Tuskegee Airmen, which opened in 2012. BEST WISHES The Turn 2 Foundation would like to wish Amanda Mellen the best as she moves on from her role as Director of Programs. We thank her for her hard work and dedication over the past seven years. 18 | Turn 2 Foundation, Inc. | Winter/Spring 2014 FEATURE 18 Years of By Dr. Dennis Hunyadi Positive Change A bout 18 years ago I was excited about sitting around the Jeter’s table in Kalamazoo, Michigan to plot out the beginnings of a foundation that would be dedicated to helping kids make better decisions and live healthier lives. It was an honor to be a part of the initiation of the Turn 2 Foundation. The immediate task was to develop a brochure for the first Kalamazoo fundraiser. The contribution levels would be based on “Singles, Doubles, Triples, Home Runs and Grand Slams.” We were proud of the work we had done, but now realize what great things are being accomplished since those simple beginnings. CONGRATULATIONS Dr. Dennis Hunyadi & Mrs. Jane Hunyadi The Jeter Family & The Turn 2 Staff would like to congratulate Dr. Dennis Hunyadi and Mrs. Jane Hunyadi on their recent retirement. Since the Foundation was established, the Hunyadis have worked to impact the lives of many students. We wish them the best and know that they will continue to be an active part of the Foundation Family for years to come. The following article was written by Dr. Hunyadi reflecting on his time with The Turn 2 Foundation. As I look back over the years, we started out hitting singles with the first attempt at getting kids involved with an after school program, a mentoring program and the first annual Derek Jeter Scholarship program, for high school seniors that were selected to receive a four year scholarship. Similar programs were being developed in New York City with an elementary school program and a scholarship program. The experience of developing quality programs is a learning process. Next came the development of the Jeter Leaders Program in Kalamazoo and New York with the goal of having high school students become leaders and positive role models in their communities, schools, and families. Just as Derek was developing as a positive role model through his leadership in Major League Baseball, his books and his hands on approach, the Jeter’s Leaders were becoming examples as well. The Foundation’s work, with the help of his mom, dad, sister Sharlee, and a host of friends, family members and other professional athletes, began to evolve and was now hitting doubles instead of singles. The “Signature Programs” grew to include more elementary after school programs, middle school programs in New York and South West Michigan as well as the expansion of the “Leaders” program which culminated to a biannual national conference hosted, developed and led by the combined Jeter Leaders programs from New York and Kalamazoo. I have had the opportunity to work with the Jeter’s Leaders and watch them grow. This program is changing lives. With the development of the Signature Programs the Foundation was now hitting triples. Tampa was the next location to be added to the Turn 2 experience with the addition of the adolescent Phoenix House program. In Florida there were initiatives to develop addi- tional programs for the school children to grow, lead, change and experience the success of getting what they need. There was a joy in being able to give back to their friends, family, community and be a part of influencing and changing their culture through social change. Now the Foundation was hitting home runs through viable programs in Kalamazoo, New York City and Tampa, the cities where Derek grew up, worked and lived. What started out in a living room has grown to be a movement to change our selves, families, neighborhoods, schools, communities, and the world we live in. What began as a bunch of singles, doubles, and triples has grown to be home runs and grand slams for the kids who are touched by the Turn 2 Foundation, Derek, his family and the people who dedicate their lives to make this Foundation work! It has been an honor and a joy for us (Jane and I) to be able to participate in a program that actively wants people to be more, reach higher, achieve the most and enjoy and celebrate what we all can become. As we retire and move to another area, we would like to thank Derek and his family for enriching our lives with the experiences that have filled us for the past 18 years. From August 4 -7, approximately 250 high school students, who all share the common goal to make positive changes in their schools and communities, developed their leadership skills by participating in several workshops, events and activities at the University of Illinois at Chicago. The Conference began with a warm welcome from Bruce Heyman, on behalf of the presenting sponsor, Goldman Sachs, and a keynote address by Ronnie Cho, Associate Director of the Office of Public Engagement and White House liaison to young Americans. Throughout the Leadership Conference, the students discovered new ways to become better leaders in their communities by participating in Jeter’s Leaders’ workshops addressing topics critical to today’s youth, Q&A sessions with motivational speakers and a community service project with Goldman Sachs Community Teamworks at James Ward Elementary School. The Leadership Conference concluded with a special panel discussion hosted by Derek Jeter and moderated by award-winning journalist and CEO of Starfish Media Group, Soledad O’Brien. Joining them on the panel were Ronnie Cho; Celebrity Dentist and author, Dr. Catrise Austin; Marion Jones, world champion track and field athlete and former WNBA player; Ron Cortina, vice president of Goldman Sachs; and motivational speakers and best-selling authors, The Three Doctors, Dr. Sampson Davis, Dr. George Jenkins, and Dr. Rameck Hunt. Turn 2 Foundation, Inc. | Winter/Spring 2014 | 31 FEATURE Jeter’s Leaders Draw Strength from Tragedy Written by Samantha Nettleton of Phoenix House Florida on her experience as a 2013 Jeter’s Leaders Conference Facilitator The 2008 opening of the Derek Jeter Center at Phoenix House, located in Tampa, Florida, established a partnership between Derek Jeter’s Turn 2 Foundation and Phoenix House, which has continued to flourish over the years. In August of 2013, that partnership provided me, as a representative of Phoenix House, with the opportunity to attend and help facilitate a workshop at the Jeter’s Leaders Leadership Conference at the University of Illinois at Chicago. The conference, which brings together high school students with leadership potential, included eight separate workshops dealing with such topics as bullying, depression, self-image, and healthy living—all subjects of importance to the majority of today’s youth. The workshop I helped facilitate was entitled “Tragedy: Coping with Disaster and Loss.” My role in the workshop was not to engage in the presentation, but rather to observe the discussion and provide any necessary assistance to the eight Jeter’s Leaders who were speaking. I entered the workshop not knowing what to expect, but what happened in the course of the next seven hours was truly inspirational. At the beginning of the workshop, following introductions, an explanation of the rules, and an overview of the day’s agenda, each Jeter’s Leader spoke of his or her own personal experience with loss, ranging from the death of a pet to the loss of a family member. After these presentations, every32 | Turn 2 Foundation, Inc. | Winter/Spring 2014 one participated in a bonding icebreaker called “Cross the Line.” The young Leaders kept the audience engaged through the whole workshop, but it was not until the last fifteen minutes that the real emotional impact of the subject came to the surface. These fifteen minutes consisted of an activity called the “Emotion Circle.” Teens who were complete strangers at the beginning of the workshop began opening up about their personal experiences with loss and grief. Tears flowed and feelings of sadness, anger, sympathy, and pain were shared by everyone in the room. No one could feel alone, for with every story told there was at least one individual who could relate to it. As an observer throughout the workshop, I could not help but feel inspired by these teens. The stories they told and the battles they fought at such a young age made them seem stronger than they perceived themselves to be. They demonstrated Over 4,000 Lives Touched In 2013, The Derek Jeter Center at Phoenix House served over 500 adolescents. Since its opening in 2007, the Center has helped more than 4,156 teens overcome substance abuse, transform their lives and pursue their goals personally, academically and professionally. The Derek Jeter Center at Phoenix House in Tampa, Florida, is a multiservice treatment center serving youth with comprehensive outpatient programs, including treatment and counseling. incredible drive and determination to do better—and be better—than anyone, including themselves, might expect. Through their example of fortitude and perseverance, the meaning behind the workshop’s keynote quotation, “Strength after tragedy comes from how you choose to look at things,” became increasingly clear. I know I am not alone when I say that the impact of the stories shared within that room will stay with me for a lifetime.
