18" Gullwing LED Area and Roadway Luminaire
The grace and style of Gullwing
with the efficiency and sustainability of LED
With a profile a mere 6.5" deep, these 18" luminaires usher in a
new paradigm in sustainable outdoor illumination. Aesthetically,
the Gullwing LED draws strength from a simplicity of form that
makes it a natural complement to any architectural theme. The
subtle elimination of the mounting arm allows the Gullwing LED
an uninterrupted transition from luminaire to pole. The striking
effect is that the luminaire and arm become one. But this design
serves practical purposes as well – minimizing wind load and
strengthening the assembly.

Gullwing LED GL18
Single Gullwing LED luminaire shown with natural aluminum paint (NP).
Immediately upon its introduction, the Philips Gardco Gullwing set a new standard
for outdoor illumination. Enthusiastically embraced by both the architectural
and engineering communities, Gullwing successfully combines industry-leading
performance, thoughtful engineering and streamlined aesthetics into a luminaire of
exceptional style and beauty.
In today's environment, sustainability and saving energy are leading factors in selecting a luminaire.
With the introduction of the Gullwing LED, Philips Gardco again leads the way.
It is simply not enough to place LEDs into an existing luminaire. LEDs are more sensitive and
behave much differently than traditional HID sources. As a result, the Gullwing has been thoroughly
retooled, reengineered, and reconceived – purpose-built around advanced LED arrays. Of course,
like all Philips Gardco performance optics, illumination is glare free with full cutoff. The luminaire
preserves the architectural character and symmetry that has elevated Gullwing to an iconic area
lighting presence.
With architectural lighting’s most beautiful high performance luminaire, LED takes flight.

If you can't stand the heat,
redesign the housing
Simply placing LEDs into existing luminaires that were designed for use with HID
sources is a recipe for disaster. Thermal management of high power LEDs is
crucial. If the generated heat is not adequately removed, the LEDs will run at higher
temperatures, making them significantly less efficient, less reliable and substantially
shortening their life.
To provide maximum value, the engineers at Philips Gardco went back to the
drawing board and conceived a completely new airflow ventilation system.
The streamlined die cast aluminum thermal management system is defined by deep
integral airways that direct substantial airflow over the cooling fins exhausting
the heat harmlessly out of the housing. At just over three inches deep, these air
channels cool the system components. From front-to-back, inside and out, every
aspect speaks to the thoughtful, economical and stylish approach to both initial and
long-term performance.
Meticulously tested and painstakingly fine-tuned to maximize flow penetration and
minimize hot spots, the luminaire also produces remarkably low variation in LED
junction temperature.
The Gullwing LED housing captures the wind across ribs that are cast into the top
of the housing. This design acts as a heat sink to cool the entire luminaire. The
combination of large surface area and the heat sink effectively lowers operating
temperatures within the luminaire, further extending the system life.
The Gullwing LED is a model of efficiency and an uncommonly elegant response to
the inherent obstacles of LED thermal management.
Tests generated during the product development process illustrate airflow patterns that work to keep the Gullwing LED cool.

In Gullwing LED, high performance LEDs
take on a new shape
Inside this streamlined luminaire is an LED array system that sets new standards for site illumination. Improved visibility, higher efficiency and
compact size mean that fewer luminaires are needed to light areas to desired levels, resulting in substantial savings and reduced environmental
impact in both the short and long term. The use of efficient LED technology allows for improved light output and a longer lifespan than
traditional light sources, all the while using a mere fraction of power required for other sources.
All told, these systems use up to 50% less energy than traditional outdoor lighting systems, and typically lower the cost of energy up to 40%
when compared to most systems in use today. Closer inspection of a typical lighting plan demonstrates how these systems deliver uniform
illumination free from hot spots and striations – even with wide pole spacings.
Philips Gardco’s Applications Engineering Department stands ready to assist with site lighting analysis and development.
Type 2
Type 4
Type BLC
These optics create an
asymmetric distribution
pattern with wide lateral
throw. This distribution
works well in walkway and
roadway applications where
more light is required “street
side” than “house side.”
The Type 4 pattern is
suitable for applications
where light is primarily
required forward with
minimal backlight. Typical
installations include
perimeter poles.
When backlight control
is critical, the BLC optic
is the perfect choice. By
sacrificing a small amount
of forward and lateral
projection, this optic is
able to significantly
restrict backlight.
Type 3
Type 5
Type 3 optics produce an
asymmetrical pattern that
directs the majority of the
light forward and equally on
both sides of the luminaire.
In a back-to-back
configuration, it creates a
rectangular pattern which can
extend pole spacings.
Type 5 optics produce a
symmetrical square
distribution pattern that
distributes light equally on all
sides of the luminaire. The
optical system is universal for
most area lighting applications.

Construction engineered to last
The arrangement of components, hardware, hinging mechanisms and material transitions all speak to the
integrity of the Gullwing LED's design and construction. Every aspect of this luminaire exhibits a thoughtful,
practical and highly refined approach to initial and long-term performance.
Seamless Transitions, Concealed Hardware
Scale and proportion are correct and satisfying from every viewing angle. Surfaces are sculptural, natural and refined. There are no visible
transitions between the luminaire, the door frame and the supporting arm. There is no visible hardware.
Weather-Protected Construction
The Gullwing LED is completely sealed at all points of material transition to exclude the intrusion of rain, insects and dust. Because the
upper and lower housing are single die castings, the only points of entry are the door frame and lens. When the door frame is closed,
the 1/8" gasketing is compressed, forming a continuous, positive seal. The lens is EPDM sealed to the frame. Heavy duty galvanized steel
retainers secure the lens.
Toolless Access
Toolless access for installation and service is a Philips Gardco trademark. Gullwing LED continues the tradition with a quick entry door
handle that provides complete access to the luminaire's optical, electrical and mounting hardware systems. The latch firmly engages as
the door is closed, creating a weather-tight seal by compressing the perimeter gasketing.
Long-Lasting Finishes
The finish is a fade and abrasion resistant, electrostatically applied, thermally cured TGIC powdercoat. Gullwing LED housings are
thoroughly cleaned and chromate acid treated prior to paint application. Standard colors feature the lightly textured Philips Gardco
finish. Custom colors may vary in texture, so please consult factory.

Features designed to please
For safety and ease of maintenance operations, a heavy
gauge lanyard on the Gullwing LED secures the door
frame in a semi-open position. A quick release is
provided to allow the door to swing down, so that
the entire optical assembly can be lowered.
Toolless Access
The integral, extruded, click-lock
latch smoothly integrates into the
face of the luminaire.

A wide variety of choices means
maximum energy savings
When compared to most HID systems, LED Luminaires already save a great deal of energy.
But why stop there? The Gullwing LED can be specified in a number of configurations that can
save up of 50% more than using the LED source alone.
Automatic Profile Dimming
The Gullwing LED with Automatic Profile Dimming (GL18-APD) provides guaranteed savings
by reducing power and light output by 50% during periods of low traffic. By calculating the
night-time midpoint, power is reduced by 50% during the two hours prior to and the six hours
after. This results in additional energy savings of 33% on average.
DynaDimmer
The Gullwing LED is available in
several configurations that utilize
the Philips DynaDimmer module.
This energy saving module allows
for reducing the power and lamp
output by 50%.
8
Gullwing LED GL18
Motion Response
The Gullwing LED with Motion Response (GL18-MR50) provides light only when it's needed,
reducing power by 50% when the site is not in use. Once motion is detected, the luminaire
switches to full light output until no motion is detected for a 15 minute period. The duration
and sensitivity of the motion sensor are easily adjusted in the field.
Automatic Profile Dimming with Motion Response Override
The Gullwing LED with Automatic Profile Dimming with Motion Response Override (GL18APD-MRO) provides the benefits of both configurations. As with the APD version, power
and light output are reduced by 50% during the two hours prior and the six hours after the
midpoint. However, if motion is detected during this time, the luminaire increases light output
and power to 100%, until no motion is detected for a 15 minute period. This provides the
savings of automatic profile dimming with the assurance that motion response will provide the
required light levels should someone be on the site during a normally low traffic period.
