GENERAL Manager
PATRICK O’KEEFE
Each year, the management staff gets together for a "Think Tank" session
to openly discuss operations and new ideas that enhance the life of our
members, guests and staff. These items are in addition to items already
planned in the 2016 business plan. This year marked the tenth year in a
row we have met and identified initiatives and operational enhancements
in each key result area. Items developed in the past are programs such as
the Chef's Table and “Chartiee Golf” that have been very successful. This
year was no exception; the team conceptualized two main items and approximately a dozen operational enhancements for the facility. The first
main initiative (came from Harry, our facility Maintenance Manager) will
be a cook-off against Executive Chef Joey. There are many talented
cooks among our membership and they can bring their very special recipe and challenge Executive Joey in a blind taste test for prizes. The second item (came from Brooke, our Accounting Manager) will be a Cinema
and Brew Night. We will play an old classic movie and provide food and
beverage service throughout the evening with themed food and beverage.
Other operational items to be accomplished throughout the season will be
a golf and tennis event that Brian and Fred will implement, complimentary wine tasting on selected evenings, vendor appreciation program,
a Beer Fest Event with local breweries, a sign off the 18th hole green
thanking our golfers for playing Duck Woods Country Club, a rebooking discount for our events, a Young Professional Social Committee
and much more!
Also, we discussed enhancements to communication for members and
staff. We developed a program that will be implemented daily to inform
the members and staff of club items such as a hole in one or the accolades of USTA tennis teams. There will be a board posted in the kitchen
(where all employees usually walk through) and a separate board that
will rotate throughout the facility with pertinent information for members
to view. The boards will be unique and stand out with quick and basic
information for all to see, so please look for the board this spring.
Also, in 2017 we will be budgeting for a greater presence on social media
and mobile marketing to our members and staff. Please do not hesitate to
contact me if you have any suggestions or comments how we can enhance our communication with you and your fellow members.
Thank you.

Golf Tip
Loft Up On Your Drives
Most golfers have the notion that a lower ball flight will help to
get the ball on the ground faster promoting more roll thus a
longer tee shot. This notion couldn’t be further from the truth. A
lower ball flight actually produces more spin causing the ball not
to roll as much as we think. A higher ball flight actually produces over spin. The higher ball flight allows the ball to fly further but also produces more roll.
A few tips in order to promote a higher ball flight:
• Loft up on your driver- If you have an adjustable driver;
change the loft to a higher setting.
• Tee the ball as high as you can- Most will say this will cause
them to “pop” the ball up. Popping the ball up is caused by an
incorrect golf swing. Tee the ball higher in order to hit the ball
higher on the club face thus promoting over spin.
• Check you ball placement in your stance- A driver should
always be inside the left foot in your stance. Most will tend to
place the ball in the middle of their stance. By moving it forward, you will hit it higher and further.
See your PGA Professional- See your PGA Professional in order
to purchase an adjustable driver or one that may fit your game.
This will be beneficial in hitting higher, longer and straighter tee
shots.
If there are any questions pertaining to this or any other aspect of
your game, please feel free to contact Brian or Hunter in the golf
lesson in order to set up a lesson today!

FROM THE LGA
Nonie Booth
Finally, the weather is beginning to take a turn for the better on Tuesdays and allowing us for some beautiful golf days. Our official season
will get underway on Tuesday, April 12, with our first Quarterly meeting of the year. It will be a 9 am shot gun start – Super Ball golf –
followed by a meeting and lunch. If we have inclement weather that
day we will meet at 11 am for the business portion and of course,
lunch! Many of us say that lunch is the best part of any Tuesday. We
hope all 18 hole and 9 hole ladies, plus any Bunker Bees that have
joined the LGA, will join us for this fun morning of golf. It’s a great
way to get the season started. The signup sheet is posted on the bulletin board in the Pro Shop.
We are always looking for new members and invite any interested ladies in the club to check out the information about the LGA that is
posted on the bulletin board in the Ladies Locker Room. Our tournament chairs have lots of fun activities planned for the coming year. As
always I look forward to seeing you on the Green Tees.

Giving Back to the Community
We know members of the Men’s Golf Association love to play golf.
Many of them are also no stranger to volunteering in the Outer Banks
community. From coaching Special Olympics to … to volunteering at
the OBX Hospital … to working at the fire department … to supporting
the Beach Food Pantry … just to name a few. Let’s take a closer look.
Mike Wiegand, David Joyner, Steve Archbell and Ralph Deger are
members of the Kitty Hawk Rotary club. Their main fundraiser is the
annual Kitty Hawk Rotary Pro-am Golf Tournament. Proceeds are
donated to Kitty Hawk Shoes for Kids, the Beach Food Pantry, Food
for Thought and the Community Care Clinic of Dare.
Wearing another hat, Ralph Deger also serves as sponsor relations director of the Outer Banks Forum.
Representing the Coast Guard Auxiliary is Jim Fordham. The Coast
Guard Auxiliary’s main functions include enhancing and improving
boating safety in the OBX, performing boating safety patrols and
search and rescue operations in local waters, and supporting the U.S.
Coast Guard.
Joe Buckley supports the Beach Food Pantry, Southern Shores Fire
Department and does volunteer work for the Southern Shores and Chicahawk Civic Associations.
Bill O’Brien, Tom Smith and Chuck Toney have provided volunteer
services to the OBX Hospital.
In association with the Knights of Columbus, Kevin McGrath and
Frank Toolan participate annually in the Memorial Day and Veterans
Day services held in Southern Shores. They also participate in these
services held in Kill Devil Hills and Manteo. Frank also provides
coaching support to the Special Olympics program.
Kevin, along with Jim Fordham and Chuck Toney, participate in ongoing charitable events to raise funds to support the local school system,
particularly in those areas requiring special needs.
Dick Furioni is a long time major contributor to the Southern Shores
Fire Department.
Very active in the community, Tom Saporito is currently a member of
the Outer Banks Kiwanis Club Board, standing fundraising chair and a
past president. He is a board member of the Fellowship of Christian
Athletes and chair of their golf fundraiser. Plus, Tom is treasurer of
the Nags Head Community Watch Association, marshal captain of the
Outer Banks Marathon and bell ringer for the Salvation Army Christmas Program.
Tom Bennett is presently serving his second term as mayor of Southern
Shores and has worked with "Caring Hands," a community outreach
ministry from Duck United Methodist Church, since 2003. He is a
member of the Southern Shores Boat Club Board, and past commodore. He served on the Southern Shores Civic Association Board, including president, and was involved for a number of years with the
canal dredge project as a volunteer.

WOMEN’S Association Nena Teller
President Bebe Bush
Spring has arrived and we have a fun-filled and exciting schedule planned for you!
The annual “Spring Basket Raffle’ is fast approaching. As you know, all proceeds
from this special event benefit the WADWCC Memorial Scholarship. We look forward to your participation in making this a very successful event!
Loismary Hoehne, Past President of WADWCC, will chair the nominating committee
for our 2016-17 year. Please consider running for a Board Position. We have a wonderful organization and we want to continue to make it a rewarding experience!
I hope to see you this week at the April 6th meeting.
Meeting: “Spring Basket Raffle.” Be amazed by creative WADWCC members.
This is the annual scholarship fundraiser in which incredible themed “baskets”
are donated to tempt your every sense. – May 4
All Duck Woods ladies are invited to attend the next Women’s Association meeting
on April 6. Mark your calendars now to enjoy our “Spring Fling” Fashion Show
beginning at 10:30 a.m. WADWCC will celebrate the return of spring with the latest
styles and fabrics with a
fashion show featuring some of our favorite local stores including Miss Lizzie’s, Confetti, Lady Victorian and All Ducked Out. All models will be WADWCC members
with our own Kathy Horne as moderator. Please RSVP to [email protected] by April 1. Remember to invite friends and neighbors!
Membership
A special welcome to our three new members: Fran Dunn, Marie Neilson, Kim
Troutman and Linda Watts. If you have any questions about WADWCC membership,
please email Judy Copeman, [email protected].
Blood Drive
A special thanks to all the volunteers and bakers who helped with the first blood drive
of 2016- “the busiest ever!” in cooperation with Holy Redeemer Church last month.
About 130 donors' participated and 122 units were collected.

Conducting Successful Blood Drive! (l to r)
WADWCC members Toni Joyner, Linda Hellman, Kathleen Ryan and Helen Wiegel helped
register donors at the blood drive held cooperatively with Holy Redeemer Church recently.
Food for Thought
Food for Thought is currently packing 530 healthy weekend meal bags. Special thanks for your continued support. If you have any questions about Food
for Thought, please contact Suzanne Smith, [email protected]. Remember, donations to Food for Thought are now welcome. Just write a check to
the non-profit and put it in a basket on the Ways and Means table.
Food Pantry
Thank you for your generosity to the Beach Food Pantry. The assistant is now
in charge and is doing well. All is going smoothly and she is most appreciative
of WADWCC’s support. Contributions are welcome. Just write a taxdeductible check payable to the Beach Food Pantry and leave it in a basket at
the Ways and Means table. Have any questions? Contact Nancy Klahre,
[email protected].
Scholarship
Calling all WADWCC members! Everyone is asked to continue help promote
the 2016 WADWCC Memorial Scholarship program. The committee has
distributed information throughout in the community including North Dare
Ministerial Association. This scholarship is intended to assist an area student
whose post-secondary education has been interrupted or delayed. Applicant
requirements include: 1) must be a high school graduate who does not have a
bachelor’s degree; 2) must have had a post-secondary education interrupted or
delayed for more than one year; 3) must be a resident of Dare or Currituck
County; 4) must be a US citizen or eligible for US citizenship; 5) must enroll
in a minimum of three credit hours in the fall semester; and 6) may be a current
college student who meets the above criteria. Applications are due April 1. If
you know of anyone who may be interested, or have any questions, please
notify Connie Outten, [email protected].
Ways and Means
The first $50 from our raffle was donated to Food for Thought. The May
“Spring Basket Meeting” is just around the corner. What is a “basket?” It can
actually be a basket with goodies or you can be creative and think out of the
box. This the only fundraiser for the WADWCC Scholarship and we need
your help! Need ideas? Contact Janet Colegrove, [email protected].
Gift to the Club
Several years ago we decided to purchase two credenzas for the club. We are
pleased to announce that at long last we are able to achieve this huge endeavor!
Our WADWCC Board, the House Committee, and the DWCC Board of Directors have approved the design. The custom built credenzas are under contract
and we hope to have them in place before the end of our 2015-16 WADWCC
year. Thank you to all who have worked so hard to make this happen.
Book and Movie Club

a.m. on Mon., April 18. Members will discuss The Wright Brothers by David McCulBirthday Luncheons
lough. Mary Lou Hoffert will facilitate the discussion. Members are encouraged to Sally Hotchkiss will host the March/April; celebration at her home on Tuesday,
