LASC does
Outreach
BY THE OFFICE OF
OUTREACH AND RECRUITMENT
The purpose of the event was to provide unity
among the people of South Los Angeles. The
team educated the community on the eight
step process to enroll at LASC and informed
many parents and guardians regarding the top
three core services available to every LASC
student. More than 300,000 community
members attended “Taste of Soul,” and the
staff was able to engage with more than 700
students, parents and grandparents. LASC
pride was definitely flaunted in the most fun
and honest manner.
The staff spoke with students at the “Mental
Health Awareness Fair” on October 30 at
LASC. The majority in attendance were
children who listened intently as the
importance of getting a college education was
stressed. The young kids were reminded that
achieving academic success is available to
each student who is willing to become a
critical thinker. With over 100 community
members in attendance, adults and students
alike enjoyed an informative and festive
evening.
The outreach season is upon us and the
Los Angeles Southwest College Office
of Outreach and Recruitment has been
off to a great start. As seniors do their
best to navigate their last year in high
school, they face the grueling process
of selecting a college. At LASC,
Outreach team members have made it
their aim to meet students all the way
in that process. It is our passion and
desire to promote a college going
culture. In turn, the team strived to visit
as many high schools in our district
while maintaining a presence at
community events around the greater
Los Angeles area. We would like to
highlight some of the recent events that
have taken place in our community.
New team members and LASC
representatives were at the California
State University,
Dominguez Hills' popular event titled,
“Feria de Educacion” on October 3
sponsored by Univision. More
than 200 parents, high school students,
as well as middle school
students attended this event. This was
an exciting time for the Outreach team
to connect with the Hispanic/Latino
community as well as with a much
younger generation of students that
came by their booth.
LASC team members also
participated in the “Taste of Soul”
community event on Oct. 1 in Los
Angeles near Baldwin Hills Plaza. It was
a unique and fun time for our team,
as we united with other offices and
programs at LASC that help make our
campus so successful such as Bridges to
Success and EOP&S.
The team also took part in the“Cash for
College” event on October 28-29 at the
Convention Center in Downtown Los
Angeles. The event took place during an
extremely important time for students,
teachers and especially parents. The students
buzzed with excitement as they received their
totes and souvenirs from desired college
booths. LASC Outreach team had a chance to
raffle off Los Angeles Southwest College
backpacks and other fun merchandise. An
estimated 10,000 students were present in
the span of two days. It was a fun time had by
all, especially our team members, because
they enjoyed seeing counselors and students
from the every school district we consistently
get the privilege of serving.
The Outreach team is out to empower a
diverse student population to achieve their
academic goals and to become critical
thinkers and socially responsive leaders!
If you are interested in attending any
upcoming community events with the team,
please email the coordinator of Outreach and
Recruitment Johnel Barron at
