Murder charge
For the second time this month, a Coos
County Grand Jury has returned an indictment of murder against a male who
"intentionally caused the death" of another. According to a news release from
District Attorney R. Paul Frasier, 45year old Andrew Wade Davenport,
North Bend, was charged with Murder
involving the death of 55-year old Coos
Bay resident Randall Leroy Harless on
August 25. Harless was found badly
beaten and stabbed in the driveway of
his residence. He died from traumatic
brain injury caused by blunt force
trauma, according to an autopsy. The
blows caused several skull fractures.
Harless also suffered multiple stab
wounds in his side and shoulder, including one to his lung and one to his liver.
Davenport is being held in the county
jail at Coquille and is expected to be
arraigned Monday, Sept. 17, 1 p.m. A
Grand Jury on Sept. 7 indicted a 43-year
old Myrtle Creek male, Timothy Allen
Hensen on two-counts of Aggravated
Murder involving the shooting death of
two other males who were abandoned on
Hwy. 101 north of Bandon Sept. 2 in
another major crime case.
Standoff in
Reedsport
For the third time this year, a standoff
between an armed male and police officers ended with the individual taking his
own life. The first two times occurred in
North Bend and Coos Bay. This time, it
was Reedsport. Hwy. 101 had to be
closed while law enforcement officers
tried to find a peaceful solution to the
situation. However, while no one else
was injured, Benny Shawn Lee Pishione
ended the eight-and-a-half hour ordeal
by shooting himself with a .38 caliber
revolver. The situation began Wednesday morning, Sept. 12, when Officers
and troopers from Reedsport, Douglas
Co., and the Oregon State Police surrounded a motel in the uptown area
while searching for a wanted individual
following a report of a Domestic Dispute
in Coos Bay that morning. A K9 Unit
from the Coos Bay Police Dept. was
requested at 9:36 a.m. News release
issued at 1:04 p.m., "On September 12,
2012, law enforcement officers secured
the area around the Fir Grove Motel
located at 2178 Winchester Avenue as
they negotiate with a man inside one of
the motel rooms. A school near the motel is in lockdown until the situation is
resolved. One northbound lane is closed
in front of the motel but traffic is getting
through the area." A second news release at 2:46 p.m., " Police officers attempted to contact the man inside the
motel room at which point he fired a
shot from a firearm so officers retreated.
No officers were injured. The area remains secured and traffic on Highway
101 is being closed in both directions
indefinitely. Police are continuing to OSP Trooper James Koehler who previously worked at the Coos Bay

a turn too wide and struck a 1998 Ford
pickup truck, towing a trailer, head-on.
The driver of the truck was identified as
45-year old Manuel Calvillo of Roseburg. No one in the pickup was injured.
The investigation is continuing.

Sex Offender
Investigations conducted during October & November by the interagency Rogue Area Drug Enforcement (RADE) team shows the team
was inundated with a variety of cases, the majority involving marijuana. Due to the nature of the investigations and the cultural closeness of those involved in the unlawful manufacture and distribution
of marijuana in Josephine County, RADE is now able to provide
some information for these case investigations including the most
recent investigation that led to three arrests and the seizure of over
250 pounds of marijuana. Oregon State Police (OSP) Sergeant Jim
Johnson said RADE opened seventeen cases during this time for
which 26 people were either arrested or have charges pending. Because a number of the cases are submitted to the Josephine County
District Attorney's Office for potential charges toward additional
suspects, not all of the mentioned cases list names of persons related to the investigations. According to Johnson, the majority of
the cases involved individuals associated with the Oregon Medical
Marijuana Program (OMMP) and focused on growing or possessing
significantly more marijuana than allowed under the program. Additionally, several other cases investigated revealed growers illegally
distributing marijuana to people other than OMMP patients for profit,
locally and outside the State of Oregon. Wholesale marijuana prices
in Josephine County commonly range from $1,200 to $1,500 per
pound. Items seized included: * 930 pounds of marijuana bud; *
Over 7,500 pounds of wet marijuana plant weight from 279 mature
marijuana plants; * User amounts of methamphetamine, heroin, and
Percocet tablets; * Hundreds of pounds of additional marijuana either drying or considered "shake"; * 120 firearms.
He's a registered Sex Offender in Florida, but fled the state in 2011 eventually
ending up in Hawaii and then Newport
on the Central Oregon Coast where he
used a fake name and was living with a
woman and her two minor children.
According to a news release from the
Newport PD, police received information about a male subject living in the
area using alias to hide his true identity.
The investigation led to 37-year old Patrick Wayne Maki. He was convicted in
Florida of felony sex offenses involving
young girls and now using the name of
Patrick McFinn. He had been working
on a charter boat since January of this
year. When contacted by police, he
game the name of Jared Newman, but
eventually admitted his true name and
date of birth. Maki was lodged in the
Lincoln Co. Jail on charges of Failure to
Register as a Sex Offender and Providing False Information to a Police Officer. Floride officials were made aware
of his arrest and further charges are anticipated.
Game arrest in
Douglas Co.
An investigation by Oregon State Police
(OSP) Fish & Wildlife Division troopers
in Douglas County led to the arrest Saturday of a Riddle-area man related to the
unlawful killing of a 6x6 bull elk on the
first day of bow hunting season in August 2012. On September 8, 2012, OSP
Trooper Aaron Baimbridge arrested JIM
MARTIN, age 42, from Riddle, for
Unlawful Possession of a Bull Elk and
Unlawful Possession of an Altered Firearm. The arrest stems from an investigation that started August 25, 2012, the
opening day of bow hunting season for
elk and deer in the Douglas County area,
when OSP received an anonymous report of a rifle shot in the Nickel Mine
area near Riddle. Baimbridge responded
to area and contacted a group of men in
possession of a large bull elk leaving the
Nickel Mine area. One of the men identified as MARTIN was driving an ATV
pulling a trailer containing a dead 6x6
elk. At the time, MARTIN said he killed
the elk with arrows but Baimbridge became suspicious when one the wounds
appeared to have been caused by a bullet. Subsequent investigation during the
day resulted in OSP seizing the elk for

A seafood seller on the docks at Charleston lost a report $1,200 worth of frozen
fish Friday, Sept. 14, when a male stole
51-pounds of Halibut and three 10pound boxes of Snapper from a freezer
on the D Dock. The daytime theft was
discovered by the owners of Fishermen's
Wharf when they noticed the suspect
carrying the frozen Halibut from the
docks to a Nissan Ultima, with Washington license plates, parked in a loading
zone at the top of the dock. Owner Matt
LeDoux followed the suspect's vehicle
to Davey Jones Locker at Cape Arago
Hwy. and Boat Basin Drive. After
blocking it in a parking space, he waited
for the suspect to come out of the store.
He was accompanied by a female and a
baby was in a back seat. After confronting them and seeing the baby, LeDoux
backed off and couple drove over a curb
to flee south on Seven Devils Road.
LeDoux lost them.

Debt Scam
The Lincoln County Sheriff's Office on
the Central Oregon Coast is informing
the public of a scam that has been on the
increase. According to a news release,
over the past few months there has been
an increase in phony debt collectors calling home phone numbers posing as a
debt collector from a credit card company. The calls sound legitimate, but
when challenged, these scammers have
become threatening and vulgar. This
scam is similar to many other scams
reported on the news and posted on the
internet web occurring all over the country. "If you get these calls make the
caller aware you know they are scammers and discontinue the call." Some of
the numbers have been captured on
caller ID and come back as disconnected. The Better Business Bureau has
provided some guide lines when and if
you should receive a suspicious phone
call from a supposed debt collector:
*Ask the debt collector to provide official documentation in writing which
substantiates the debt; *Do not provide
or confirm any bank account, credit card
or other personal information over the
phone until you have confirmed the legitimacy of the call; *Review recent
copies of your credit reports to ensure
that the alleged debt is not affecting your
credit. You may also report and check
for reported scams on the internet web at

Cold Case
Homicides
A male who died in prison at the age of
66 from lung cancer has been identified
as the main suspect in two double cold
case homicides on the Central Oregon
Coast involving teenage girls back in the
1990s. According to a news release
from Lincoln Co. District Attorney Rob
Bovett, Bobby Jack Fowler was sentenced to prison in 1995 following his
conviction for Kidnapping, Assaulting
and the Attempted Rape of a female at a
Newport motel. He died May 20, 2006.
The announcement follows a Royal Canadian Mounted Police investigation in
British Columbia into 18 cases of missing and murdered women. He is also
suspected of being involved in other
cases in the United States dating back to
the 1970s. Nineteen year old Sheila
Swanson and 17-year old Melissa Sanders, both of Sweet Home, were last seen
May 3, 1992 near Beverly Beach State
Park north of Newport. Their bodies
were found in a wooded area near Eddyville on October 10, 1992. On January
28, 1995, two 16-year old girls went
missing in the area of NW 56th Street in
Newport. The bodies of Jennifer Esson
and Kara Leas were found in a wooded
area north of the city, February 15, 1995.
Fowler was arrested June 28, 1995 after
a woman escaped from him by jumping,
unclothed and with a rope tied around
her ankle, out of a second story motel
window.
Drowning
A 35-year old Albany woman drowned
on the Central Oregon Coast during a
diving excursion with her husband Sunday, Sept. 23. Natalie Glass ran out of
air in her dive tank and when she surfaced near the South Jetty of Yaquina
Bay to alert her husband, she struggled
and slipped below the surface of the
channel. Local divers later recovered
her body.
Fatal fire
One person was killed in a house fire on
the Central Oregon Coast Sunday, Sept.
23, and a Major Crime Team was activated to investigate. According to a
news release from the Lincoln Co. Sheriff's Office, the fire was reported at 5:27
a.m. on South Bay Road in Toledo. Fire
personnel from Toledo, Siletz and Newport responded. The Oregon State Police Arson unit was also summoned to
investigate. No other information was
released.

Coos Co. Sheriff's investigators are
looking into several scenarios involving
the grisly death of an elderly male whose
body was discovered at his farm near
Riverton, southwest of Coquille on
Wednesday, Sept. 26. The body of 70year old Terry Vance Garner was found
in an area where he kept his hogs, several described as being over 700 lbs.
According to District Attorney R. Paul
Frasier, " This is the first time in 27
years I have ever had something like this
happen." Garner reportedly had some
health issues. He is believed to have
gone out to feed the hogs during the
morning hours. " In examining the area
where the hogs were kept, a person
found victim’s dentures, cigarettes and a
closed pocket knife. Further investigation found various parts of his body. It
appears the hogs consumed a great deal
of his body." Investigators believe Garner could of had a health event that
caused his death in the hog area and then
they proceeded to consume him. They
are also looking into the possibility that
one or more of the hogs managed to get
him on the ground and then killed him.
One had bitten him in the past. " Of
course, when you have something like
this you also have to look at foul play
just in case. Right now we simply do
not know how Mr. Garner ended up being in a position where the hogs were
able to consume him." The remains
were examined by the county's Forensic
Pathologist Saturday, Sept. 29. "There
was nothing found in what little remained of him to show one way or the
other if he had a heart attack, died as a
result of being attacked by the hogs, or
was the victim of foul play. What little is
left will be examined by a forensic anthropologist at the University of Oregon."

around 8:30 p.m. when someone directed a green laser at the aircraft from
shore. “At 75 feet above water level a
bright green light flashed through the
cockpit three to four times,” said Lt.
Tamara Whalen, the aircraft commander. “It definitely took a conscious
effort not to look over towards it [to try
to find the person].” After being lased,
the crew decided to return to the Coast
Guard Air Facility in Newport. The
helicopter crew was not the only crew
affected that night. After illuminating
the helicopter the laser was directed toward the boat crew during their transit
back to the station. Pointing a laser at
any aircraft is a federal offense. The
Federal Aviation Administration reports
that laser incidents involving aircraft
increased by 902 percent from 2005 to
2011. Coast Guard Capt. Mark Reynolds, commanding officer of Group/Air
Station North Bend, says the Coast
Guard is deeply concerned with the recent number of laser incidents and the
deadly risks they pose not only locally,
but across the nation. “It is important to
point out that the people committing
these crimes are not only putting the
lives of our helicopter and boat crews in
jeopardy, but they are also endangering
the lives of their fellow citizens,” said
Reynolds. “We’re asking the public to
help us put an end to this reckless behavior by reporting the illegal use of lasers
if they witness it happening.” The Coast
Guard is urging anyone who sees someone point a laser at one of its air or boatcrews to call 911. Anyone with information about the Sept. 12 incident in
Depoe Bay is encouraged to call Group/
Air Station North Bend Command Center at 541-756-9210.
