2005 Baptist Communicators Association Annual Workshop & Wilmer C. Fields Awards Banquet APRIL 20-23, 2005 WESTIN TABOR CENTER DENVER, COLORADO YOU’RE INVITED... On April 20-23, 2005, Southern Baptists in the Mile High City of Denver, Colorado, will host the annual workshop of the Baptist Communicators Association. Each year at the workshop, communications professionals from state conventions, national Southern Baptist agencies, seminaries, colleges & universities, and other entities gather for training and education. Plan now to attend this time of fellowship, networking, professional development and FUN!! You work hard to support the ministries within your organization and to use your skills in Kingdom work. This annual workshop is an important time to fellowship with other communication professionals; volunteer in a mission opportunity; improve understanding of communication processes; sharpen existing skills; comprehend new technologies; and discover tried-and-true techniques. It’s an invaluable time for participants. RATTLEBRAIN THEATER This year’s workshop will kickoff on Wednesday evening with a dessert reception and private show at the Rattlebrain Theater, Denver’s premiere improvisational comedy theater. Winner of the 42nd annual Downtown Denver Awards and nominated for Best Comedy and Best Theater Season by the Denver Post Ovation Awards, Rattlebrain Theater has become Denver’s popular home for original comedy. Known for biting wit, irreverent attitude and skilled acting, Rattlebrain performs in its hip theater, conveniently located right next door to the Westin, in the historic D&F Clock Tower. BREAKOUT SESSIONS On Thursday and Friday, we’ll get down to business with breakout sessions that will offer training in electronic media, graphic design, news writing, photography, public relations and more. Be sure to check the BCA website at www.baptistcommunicators.org for a complete listing of workshop titles, descriptions and leaders as it becomes available. KEYNOTE SPEAKERS This year’s workshop will feature keynote sessions by author, speaker and consultant Sally Morgenthaler and Tom Fortson, president and CEO of Promise Keepers. Sally Morgenthaler, founder of Sacramentis.com, speaks and teaches on issues of worship, postmodern culture and evangelism. Her multi-media keynotes have received wide acclaim, having presented to audiences from three hundred to three thousand. Sally’s Worship Evangelism: Inviting Unbelievers Into the Presence of God (Zondervan, 1995) has become a touchstone for postmodern, worship-driven ministry and a work whose popularity spans denominational boundaries. Her expertise on postmodern culture can help us rebrand our denomination as we strive to reach younger generations. In 2003, Tom Fortson was named president and CEO of Promise Keepers where he had served as chief operating officer since 1996. Tom spent many years in corporate America, serving as an administrator at General Motors Corporation in Detroit and as the vice president of human resources at Edwards Baking Company in Atlanta, Georgia; has served as dean at the Atlanta Center for Theological Studies and as president of Next Step Consultants, a Christian consulting group based in Atlanta. Tom sits on the board of trustees for Moody Bible Institute and is a member of the board of directors of the National Religious Broadcasters. He and his wife, Toni, are speakers for Campus Crusade Family Life Seminars. FOCUS ON THE FAMILY On Friday, we’ll take a short road trip down to Colorado Springs for a tour of the national headquarters of Focus on the Family. FOTF began in 1977 in response to Dr. James Dobson’s increasing concern for the American family and has since become an international organization with more than 74 different ministries requiring nearly 1,300 employees. On the now-daily broadcast heard on over 6,000 facilities worldwide, Dr. Dobson still explores family issues, usually with one or more recognized experts as guests. Meanwhile, other parts of the organization produce six additional broadcasts, ten magazines sent to more than 2.3 million people a month, award-winning books, films and videos. Focus also responds to as many as 55,000 letters a week, offers professional counseling and referrals to a network of 1,500 therapists, and addresses public policy and cultural issues. FLYING W CHUCKWAGON We’ll end the day with an authentic western chuckwagon dinner and stage show at the Flying W Ranch. The Flying W is a working, mountain cattle ranch that has specialized in western food and entertainment since 1953. In the high season they entertain and serve dinner to over a thousand persons nightly. The Flying W has a winning combination of beautiful natural surroundings, an authentic old western town and mouthwatering food. The Flying W Wranglers top the evening off with their outstanding western stage show that is unsurpassed in the West. ROCKY MOUNTAIN NATIONAL PARK On Saturday, you can choose from exploring Denver on your own or you can spend the day with other BCAers in Estes Park, Colorado, the gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park. The national Park and Roosevelt National Forest surround the village of Estes Park with spectacular mountain scenery, abundant wildlife habitat, miles of hiking trails and scenic drives. For years people have visited Estes Valley to enjoy beautiful mountain scenery, moderate climate and abundant wildlife. WILMER C. FIELDS AWARDS BANQUET On Saturday evening, the workshop will conclude with the annual Wilmer C. Fields Awards Banquet, recognizing those BCA members who have done exemplary work in the past year. DENVER Located at the base of the Rocky Mountains, Denver is one of America’s most beautiful cities. And one of the most fun! Blessed with 300 days of sunshine a year, Denver is a lively city with a great love of the outdoors. Downtown Denver is a bustling area centered around a mile-long pedestrian promenade -- the 16th Street Mall -- that is lined with outdoor cafes and shops. Down every street are mountain views. Just down the street from the Westin is LoDo, a 25-square block historic district that is now home to many restaurants, outdoor cafes, shops and art galleries. An important part of any BCA annual workshop is the chance to network with friends and colleagues. Downtown Denver will provide many wonderful opportunities for that kind of fellowship. ARRIVING A major hub for United Airlines and the home of Frontier Airlines, Denver International Airport is easy to access from across the country. It is served by most major airlines and rental car companies. DIA’s Ground Transportation Counter and all rental car counters are located in the main terminal of DIA on Level 5, as soon as you come up the escalator from the train. Because DIA is located so far from downtown Denver, a typical cab fare will cost about $46. If you aren’t traveling with others with whom you can share a cab, a less expensive option is Super Shuttle. They offer a one-way rate of $18 and a slightly discounted round-trip rate of $30 from the airport to the Westin. You do not need a reservation to ride Super Shuttle, as the vans leave the airport for downtown hotels every fifteen minutes. To purchase a ride on Super Shuttle visit their counter on Level 5 of the main terminal at DIA and identify yourself with Baptist Communicators Association. For more options or for questions, you may contact DIA’s Ground Transportation Counter at 1-800-AIR-2DEN or locally at 303-342-4059. WESTIN TABOR CENTER Our host hotel for the 2005 Workshop is the Westin Tabor Center. Adjacent to the 16th Street Mall, the newly-refurbished hotel is just steps away from many shops and restaurants. All guest rooms feature Westin’s signature Heavenly Bed® and Heavenly Bath®. High-speed Internet access is available on premier floors and wireless access is available in public areas. The hotel is offering guest rooms at $119 per night for our meeting. For reservations, contact the Westin at 303-572-9100 by March 31 and identify yourself with BCA. If you rent a car or drive your own vehicle, there is a fee for parking. Contact the hotel for those rates.
