The Miners also opened up against the Lobos in 2013, dropping a 42-35 decision in the Sun Bowl. This time the teams will tangle in Albuquerque for the first time since 2010. UTEP is kicking off back-to-back seasons versus the same opponent for the first time since 2008-09 (Buffalo) and only the second time since 1983. The Miners are 41-50-5 in season openers and 9-31-2 in season openers on the road. UTEP is opening a season away from home for the first time since 2008 (42-17 loss at Buffalo). The Miners have won two of their last three road openers after dropping their previous 12. About New Mexico The Lobos were 3-9 overall and 1-7 in the Mountain West Conference in their second season under coach Bob Davie. New Mexico has 49 lettermen returning, including 13 starters. The Lobos bring back junior quarterback Cole Gautsche, three linemen and the bulk of their receiving corps on offense. A significant loss is Kasey Carrier, who rushed for 1,122 yards in 2013 (291 versus UTEP). On defense, New Mexico returns a lineman, two linebackers, two cornerbacks and a safety. Four of the top six tacklers are back, headlined by sophomore linebacker Dakota Cox (99 stops a year ago). Senior end Brett Bowers is another significant returnee on defense after leading the team with nine tackles for losses and six sacks. New Mexico is the 14th-youngest team in the country with freshmen and sophomores encompassing 65.7 percent (69-of-105) of the players on the roster. The Series New Mexico leads the series 43-31-3, including 26-10-1 in games played in Albuquerque. After losing in 14 of their previous 16 trips to University Stadium, the Miners broke through with a 38-20 victory on Oct. 2, 2010. That was UTEP’s first win in Albuquerque since 1998 and moved it to 4-1 in a season that ended with a berth in the New Mexico Bowl. This is the second-longest running series in school history (77 games) next to NM State (91 games). The Miners and the Lobos were joint members of the Western Athletic Conference from 1968-98. The Last Meeting Kasey Carrier rushed for 291 yards, and New Mexico gained 395 on the ground in a 42-35 overtime win over UTEP on Sept. 7, 2013 in the Sun Bowl. The loss spoiled Sean Kugler’s debut as UTEP head coach. New Mexico punted just once on the night, late in the third quarter, while putting together three touchdown drives of 70 yards or more. The Lobos finished with 483 yards of offense. The Miners nearly matched them yard-for-yard but came up short on fourth and one at the UNM fouryard line in overtime. Nathan Jeffery was stopped just short of the first down. Officials ruled no gain and following a challenge by Kugler, the call was upheld. Earlier, Carrier gave New Mexico the lead for good on a 21-yard scoring scamper on third and six in the extra session. UTEP was playing catch-up for most of the game but rallied to take its first lead, 28-21, on a 65-yard run by Aaron Jones with 6:13 to play in the third quarter. New Mexico rallied with back-to-back TDs before Jones knotted the score on an eight-yard run with 1:19 to play in regulation. Jones finished with 127 yards rushing, the most by a UTEP freshman since 1996. Jameill Showers also made his debut for the Miners and completed 15-of-20 passes for 119 yards with no interceptions. His counterpart, UNM’s Clayton Mitchem, finished 4-of-7 passing for 88 yards, but the Lobos rode the ground game to their first victory in El Paso -- and the state of Texas -- since 1997. UTEP vs. the MWC UTEP has played 12 games against Mountain West Conference foes since the league’s inception for the 1999 season. The Miners are 6-6 in those games, including 2-3 on the road (lost 26-6 at New Mexico in 2001, won 34-27 at San Diego State in 2006, lost 26-13 at New Mexico in 2006, won 38-20 at New Mexico in 2010, lost 59-42 at Colorado State in 2013). Connections UTEP has one player from the state of New Mexico on its 2014 roster, freshman tight end Sterling Napier, who played at Cleveland High School in Rio Rancho. New Mexico has 27 Texas products. Players from both schools who attended the same high school or college are: Napier, UNM DL Desmond Branch, UNM QB Cole Gautsche, UNM RB Romell Jordan & UNM TE Reece White (Cleveland HS); UTEP DB Jameel Erving, UTEP DB Nick Gathrite, UTEP OL Eric Lee & UNM DL Cole Juarez (Riverside CC); UTEP RB Traun Roberson & UNM WR Ridge Jones (DeSoto HS); UTEP OL Josh Silvas, UTEP DL Jacob Bejarano & UNM OL Reno Henderson (New Mexico Military Institute); UTEP OL Chris Jones & UNM TE Chris Edling (Corsicana HS); UTEP DL Maurice Chavis & UNM TE Emanuel Simpson (Pima CC); UTEP DL Alex Villarreal & UNM QB Clayton Mitchem (Northeastern Oklahoma A&M); and UTEP RB Sloan Spiller & UNM DB Isaiah Brown (Katy HS). UTEP Running Backs Coach Cornell Jackson served in a similar capacity at New Mexico from 2005-06. He was also the Lobos’ linebackers coach in 1995. @UTEPATHLETICS GAME 1 | NEW MEXICO STATISTICAL COMPARISON NEW MEXICOCATEGORY UTEP 0 Scoring 0 0 First Downs 0 0-0-0 Rush-Pass-Pen0-0-0 0 Rushing Yards 0 0 Avg. Head Coach Sean Kugler Sean Kugler compiled a 2-10 mark in his first year as UTEP’s head coach. He was a four-year letterwinner for the Miners (1985-88) and a three-year starter at right guard. Kugler returned to the Sun City as a UTEP assistant coach (1993-2000), working as a graduate assistant/defensive line coach in 1993, tight ends & assistant strength and conditioning coach in 1994 and offensive line coach from 1995-2000. He coached in the NFL with Detroit (2001-05), Buffalo (2007-09) and Pittsburgh (2010-12) and was also assistant head coach at Boise State in 2006 when the Broncos finished 13-0 and beat Oklahoma, 43-42, in the Fiesta Bowl. Players Turned Coaches Sean Kugler is the second UTEP head coach who played for the Miners at one time. The other is Walter Milner, a three-year letterman from 1931-33 who served as head coach in 1942. His work was a large part of the success the Miners backfield saw last season. Jones racked up OVER 800 YARDS ON THE GROUND and scored FOUR TOUCHDOWNS. He tallied THREE 100-YARD PERFORMANCES, which was the MOST BY UTEP FRESHMAN SINCE 1985. Two of Jones’ touchdowns were runs of 60-plus yards. His 81-YARD TOUCHDOWN RUN against Rice was the LONGEST BY A FRESHMAN IN THE COUNTRY, and it also set a RECORD for the longest touchdown run by a Miner freshman. 3 @UTEPATHLETICS GAME 1 | NEW MEXICO 2014 C-USA STANDINGS Kugler Putting His Stamp on Program Sixty-five of the 105 players on the 2014 UTEP roster were signed by second-year head coach CONFERENCEOVERALL Sean Kugler and his staff. It includes nine true freshmen – OLs Derron Gatewood and Christopher Misalefua, TE Sterling Napier, WR Tyler Batson, DE Luke Elsner, NT Mike Sota, CB Nik Needham, and S Adrian Hynson and Mookie Carlile. If the depth chart remains true to form, the Miners could start as many as 11 seniors against the Lobos. UTEP could start two freshmen on offense (OLs Derek Elmendorff and Will Hernandez) and one on defense (LB Alvin Jones). Hometown Heroes There are 18 El Paso products on the 2014 roster (11 who are freshmen or sophomores), including six in the depth chart – RG Derek Elmendorff (projected starter), WR Cole Freytag, RB Aaron Jones (projected starter), LB Alvin Jones (projected starter), LG Paulo Melendez and WR Brandon Moss. Showers Returns After missing the last five games of the 2013 season with a shoulder injury, Jameill Showers is back for his final go-round this fall. He has completed 138-of-237 passes (.582) for 1,622 yards and 13 touchdowns, while rushing 80 times for 267 yards in 18 career games. Showers, who appeared in 11 contests for Texas A&M from 2011-12, threw for 365 yards at Colorado State and 253 versus NM State in his initial season with the Miners. He went an average of 47 pass attempts between interceptions. Showers was tied for 28th nationally in touchdowns responsible for (92) last season before getting hurt early in the seventh game at Rice. He became one of just six Miner quarterbacks to throw two 70-yard passes in a season despite being sidelined for the majority of the latter half of the year. @UTEPATHLETICS GAME 1 | NEW MEXICO Running Back One-Two Punch The Miners welcome back senior Nathan Jeffery and sophomore Aaron Jones to the backfield. Both were hindered by injuries during the 2013 season, but still combined to rush for 1,343 yards on 288 carries (4.7 avg.) with nine touchdowns. Together they accounted for 61 percent of UTEP’s net rushing yardage. Jeffery, a 6-foot, 210-pound downhill style bruising running back, gained 532 yards on 133 attempts (4.0 avg.) with five touchdowns in 10 games. Jeffery got off to a slow start, but rushed for 317 yards on 59 carries (5.4 avg.) and four touchdowns the last three weeks of the season. He ranks 11th in school history with six 100-yard games and will tie Joseph Polk (199598) for 10th place the next time he goes over the century mark. Jeffery owns 1,595 career rushing yards with 13 touchdowns. Jones, a 5-foot-10, 185-pound side-to-side speedy running back, rushed for a UTEP freshman-record 811 yards on 155 carries (5.2 avg.) and scored four touchdowns in nine games. Jones led all freshmen nationally with 100.6 yards per game through eight contests before suffering a season-ending injury at North Texas. Jones recorded three 100+ yard games, including a career-high 186 yards at Rice. Running Back Production UTEP compiled 2,216 yards rushing last season, its most since 1988 – head coach Sean Kugler’s final year in a Miner uniform. The 2,216 rushing yards rank 10th in school history. The Miners compiled 200+ yards rushing in six games for the first time since 1994. UTEP also had more rushing first downs (116) than passing first downs (87) in a season for the first time since 2003. The Miners return players who accounted for 92 percent (2,036-of-2,216) of their cumulative rushing yardage in 2013. New-Look O-Line UTEP will open the season with a largely rebuilt offensive line. Jerel Watkins has been moved to left tackle after making 28 starts at left guard in his first three years at UTEP. UTEP’s other four projected starters in the line – freshmen Derek Elmendorff and Will Hernandez and junior college transfers Eric Lee and Chris Thomas – have only played in one game combined for the Miners (Thomas saw action in the ’13 opener against New Mexico). The Miners have three other players that have combined to make 18 starts up front. All, however, are listed as backups in the preseason depth chart – sophomore Jerome Daniels (backup right tackle, one career start), sophomore Christian Harper (backup left tackle, five starts) and senior Paulo Melendez (backup right guard, 12 starts). Senior Kyle Brown, who started every game at right guard the last two years, is out for the 2014 season with a pulmonary embolism. UTEP’s projected starting offensive line for game one averages 6-3, 309 pounds. Last year’s group averaged 6-4, 298 pounds heading into the opener. 5 #SHOWERS UNDER CENTER Senior quarterback JAMEILL SHOWERS only appeared in SEVEN GAMES during the 2013 campaign. In those games, he accounted for 15 TOUCHDOWNS, while only turning the ball over four times. Showers kept opposing defenses on edge with his versatile style. He threw for 11 TOUCHDOWNS, while also scampering for FOUR RUSHING TOUCHDOWNS. In four of the seven games, he registered both a passing and rushing touchdown. Young Receiving Corps The Miners lost three of the five players who compiled over 100 yards receiving last season, including Jordan Leslie who concluded his UTEP career with 2,015 yards (10th in school history) and 15 touchdowns (ninth). UTEP’s leading returning receiver is senior Ian Hamilton, who compiled 354 yards and a touchdown in 2013. The Miners also bring back senior tight end Eric Tomlinson, who recorded 304 yards and a score. The rest of the returning lettermen combined for 250 receiving yards a year ago. Tomlinson is Tops Senior Eric Tomlinson has been named to the preseason All-Conference USA team and is regarded as the top tight end in the league. Tomlinson is coming off the most productive season by a Miner tight end in five years. The 6-foot-7, 265-pounder hauled in 30 catches for 304 yards and a score. His receptions and yards were the most by a UTEP player at his position since Jamar Hunt logged 31 catches and 367 yards during the 2008 season. Tomlinson registered career-highs for catches (eight) and yards (75) at Colorado State in 2013. He is on the watch list for the John Mackey Award, presented to the nation’s best tight end. Oh Brother Two sets of siblings could spell trouble for UTEP opponents in 2014. Sophomore Aaron Jones is the team’s leading returning rusher, and redshirt freshman Alvin Jones is a top backup at linebacker. The twin brothers were part of a 10-win team their senior year at Burges High School in El Paso. Alvin played defensive back and quarterback during his prep years. The rushing contingent features Darrin and Jeremiah Laufasa. Darrin, a sophomore, started seven games at fullback in 2013 and rushed for 137 yards, including 74 in the second half at NM State. Jeremiah, a junior, is a Washington State transfer who led the Cougars in rushing TDs last season (seven) while also running for 157 yards. A third Laufasa brother, Corey, is also on campus this season and working with the strength and conditioning department after playing at Washington State. Defense Gains Experience Over the course of the 2013 season 15 Miners made their first career starts on defense, including 11 in the secondary. That kind of baptism by fire is expected to pay dividends in 2014 as UTEP returns 14 players with starting experience. That includes safeties Devin Cockrell and Dashone Smith, who ranked 1-2 on the squad in stops as freshmen with 76 and 69 respectively. Young D-Line Of the 10 players listed in the preseason depth chart on the defensive line, six are either freshmen or sophomores. The projected starters include sophomores Gino Bresolin and Nick Usher, who have combined to make two college starts, and senior Maurice Chavis, who played in six games in his lone season with the Miners (2013) after transferring from Pima Community College. The old man of the D-line is junior Roy Robertson-Harris, who has appeared in 22 games for UTEP while tallying 51 tackles, eight tackles for losses and 4.5 sacks. Solid at Linebacker UTEP coaches feel good about going to battle with their top four linebackers – senior Anthony Puente, juniors Trey Brown and Jimmy Musgrave and freshman Alvin Jones. Puente has played in every game the last two years, was a full-time starter in 2013 and has accumulated 74 tackles during his college career. Brown could move into a starting role after leading the Miners with 10 special teams tackles a year ago. Musgrave is an impact transfer from Victor Valley College who collected first team All-League honors after leading the Mountain Conference in tackles per game (9.4) last season. Jones was a star defensive back and quarterback at Burges High School in El Paso. More Seasoned in the Secondary Last year 11 players made their first career starts in the UTEP secondary. That has paved the way for the Miners to sport a much more seasoned look this fall. Nine returnees in the depth chart – Devin Cockrell, Jameel Erving, Nick Gathrite, Ishmael Harrison, Leon Hayes, Adrian James, Wesley Miller, Traun Roberson and Dashone Smith – bring starting experience into 2014. The Miners will likely start three seniors (Erving, James, Miller) and a junior (Harrison). The cornerback position has been bolstered by the addition of Division I transfers Kelvin Fisher Jr. (Arkansas) and Damian Payne (Houston). Payne should be a major addition for the Miners on special teams as well after rating third in the American Athletic Conference in punt return average (4.3) last season. Golden Returner After just two seasons, Autrey Golden has staked his claim as one of the best kickoff returners in UTEP history. He ranked 11th nationally in average in 2012 (28.3) and 10th in 2013 (27.6). Golden was second in Conference USA in kickoff return average as a freshman and first as a sophomore. He enters 2014 tied for fifth in school history in kickoff returns (57), fourth in kickoff return yards (1,596) and first in kickoff return touchdowns (four). His career average (28.0) rates second in the record book behind Vernon Frazier’s 29.4 from 2008-11. Golden is tied for first among active FBS players in kickoff returns for TDs with Florida’s Andre Debose, Kansas State’s Tyler Lockett and Northern Illinois’ Tommylee Lewis (all three are seniors). Golden also rates first among FBS returnees in kickoff return yards per game (69.4). Junior RB AUTREY GOLDEN is one of the most prolific kick returners to grace a UTEP uniform. After two years on the job, Golden already ranks near the top of several statistical categories. 4- the number of kicks Golden has taken to the endzone, which is NUMBER ONE ALL-TIME AT UTEP 28.0 - Golden’s kick return average which ranks 2ND ALLTIME AT UTEP 57 - the number of returns during Golden’s career; on pace for 2ND ALL-TIME AT UTEP 69.4- Golden’s average return yards per game, which ranks FIRST FOR RETURNING PLAYERS ON FBS TEAMS 6 @UTEPATHLETICS GAME 1 | NEW MEXICO Familiar Faces in the Kicking Game While their numbers weren’t eye-popping a year ago, kicker Jay Mattox and punter Mike Ruggles still gained some valuable experience as freshmen and should be much-improved in 2014. Mattox led the team with 53 points while converting on all 32 of his PATs and 7-of-15 field goals. Ruggles averaged 40.0 yards on 56 punts. His finest moment came late in the season versus FIU when he boomed a 73-yard punt, tied for the 10th-longest in school history.
