October 29, 2011
FARGO, N.D.--Brock Jensen completed a career-high
22 of 25 passes for 204 yards and a touchdow as 3rdranked North Dakota State took sole possession of first
place in the Missouri Valley Conference with a 27-19
victory over 2nd-ranked Northern Iowa before a sellout
crowd of 18,886 in the Fargodome on Oct. 29.
It was the second sellout of the season for North
Dakota State and the 10th since 2006. NDSU became
the first MVFC team to start the season 8-0 since 2007.
The Bison defeated UNI for the first time since 1982,
losing three straight after the series resumed in 2008.
D.J. McNorton scored on a 6-yard run and an 8-yard
pass for the Bison (8-0, 5-0 Valley Football), who are one
of two undefeated teams in the FCS, along with Sam
Houston State (8-0).
McNorton rushed 16 times for 75 yards and caught
six passes for 28. He moved to 11th all-time in rushing
at NDSU with 2,442 yards on 477 carries past Doug
Lloyd (340-2410, 1985-88).
Jensen connected on his first 10 passes and topped
his career-high in completions for the third straight
week. He recorded his fifth career 200+ yard passing
game.
North Dakota State also scored on a 3-yard fumble
recovery by defensive end Kyle Emanuel that was forced
by linebacker Travis Beck that put the Bison ahead 2413 with 1:09 left in the third quarter. It was the fourth
game this season the Bison have scored a defensive TD,
the first since Bobby Ollman’s pick six against Illinois
State on Oct. 1.
Northern Iowa (6-2, 5-1 Valley Football), which was
averaging 202 yards rushing per game, was held to 53.
David Johnson had 16 yards on 10 carries, but caught 10
passes for 114 yards and a TD.
Tirrell Rennie was 20 of 30 for 224 yards, but threw
his first interception of the season -- snapping a schoolrecord streak of 171 passes without an interception
dating back to last season.
UNI was led defensively by linebacker L.J. Fort’s
game-high 15 tackles, while Jordan Smith added 13.
North Dakota State defensive back John Pike intercepted two passes including one with 1:47 left to seal
the win. Pike had a key pass breakup on UNI’s first drive
to force a field goal. His first interception came with
5:35 left in the third quarter to stop a Panthers drive to
the NDSU 21.
Pike’s effort typified the North Dakota State defensive effort. The Panthers rushed for only 53 yards and
were 3 for 8 in third down conversions. Bryan Shepherd
led the Bison with seven tackles including four solos and
had three pass breakups including one when UNI went
for two points after trimming the NDSU lead to 24-19
with 6:51 left in the fourth quarter.
NDSU kicker Ryan Jastram hit a pair of field goals
including a 41-yarder with 2:27 remaining in the fourth
quarter. Jastram made 3 of 3 extra points and added a
pair of tackles.

in total offense, but a commanding 36:21 to 23:39

Bison in their home opener since topping Valparaiso 52-0 in 2004.
Junior receiver Ryan Smith racked up 131 all-purpose yards -- 68 receiving and 63

Junior linebacker Grant Olson led the Bison defense with eight total tackles, 1.0

Junior quarterback Brock Jensen was efficient all evening, completing 18 of 29
passes for 189 yards. He also ran for 42 yards as the Bison spoiled the home debut of
CSU coach Jim McElwain.
Early on, the game looked like it might be a high-scoring affair. CSU tight end
Crockett Gillmore hauled in a pass over the middle and outraced the Bison secondary
for a 69-yard TD just 90 seconds into the contest.
NDSU (2-0) quickly answered just over a minute later when Ojuri glided into the
end zone. Soon after, Cole Jirik tackled tailback Tommey Morris in the end zone for a
safety, giving the Bison a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.
The stingy Bison defense allowed CSU to convert just 1-of-10 third-down plays all
game and sacked quarterback Garrett Grayson four times. The Bison converted 12-of21 third-down plays.
Sophomore Zach Vraa led a balanced Bison receiving attack, hauling in six passes
for 67 yards.
The Bison have allowed just 20 points in their last five contests, dating back to a
24-0 shutout victory over Lehigh in the 2011 Division I FCS Quarterfinals. NDSU has
limited its opponent to 10 points or less in nine of its last 17 games.
Junior linebacker Grant Olson led NDSU in tackles for the second straight game,
recording nine stops and 2.0 TFL.

Prairie View A&M. The Bison rolled up 312 yards on the ground with six different ball

nine carries.
Defensive end Mike Hardie led NDSU with six tackles and a pair of sacks, while
linebacker DeShawn Dinwiddie had six tackles. Free safety Christian Dudzik and nose
guard Brian Schaetz each came up with fumble recoveries. The Bison combined for
