This, our 30th anniversary year, has been a year
of reflections. It has been a remarkable journey
as we celebrated our history. At the beginning of
the year, we were honored to sit down with the
family of Brenda Florian, our very first wish child.
We learned that while our organization continues
to grow and change, one thing that has always
remained the same has been the impact of a wish.
A wish, after all, is something magical for
children facing life-threatening medical conditions.
It’s something that serves as an escape from
the grown-up size battles they face. Wishes are
as endless as their young imaginations, and we
continue to be inspired by them. Similarly, we
continue to be inspired by the dedication of those
who help us grant these wishes – 111 of them this
year alone. And, as we looked back into our history,
we learned that so many volunteers and donors
have been serving our mission since our very early
days.
Browse through our 30-year history in these
pages. Relive some of the early wishes that built our
mission and notice the similarities of wishes today.
Notice the smiles on the faces of the children we
serve and know that it is because of you. Families
who had their wish granted decades ago tell us
they are still reliving the magic. This is the impact of
your involvement.
Whether you’re an individual donor, corporate
sponsor, or one of our 350 volunteers throughout
the state, you helped make this possible. And as we
approach the next 30 years, we remain committed
to granting the wish of every eligible child in our
state.
30 Years
ofWishes
Austin (5), Battens Disease,
Meet Garth Brooks 1992
Make-A-Wish started in Nebraska in a truly grassroots way. After
seeing a newscast about volunteers granting wishes to sick children
in Arizona, a dedicated group in Nebraska banded together to
figure out how to provide that same experience to local children. In
30 years, the mission has held strong and the community continues
to support the goal of bringing hope, strength, and joy to Nebraska
children fighting life-threatening medical conditions.
Eight wishes were granted in that first year, then 14, then 20 - growth
continued up to a record-breaking number of 114 wishes last year.
We are committed to granting the wish of every eligible child in our
state and have never had to place a child on a waitlist due to lack
of funds. This is extremely important because sometimes wishes can’t
wait. Sometimes it’s the wish that provides a ray of sunshine during a
dark time for a child.
More than 2,100 Nebraska children have received their “one true
wish.” From our most popular wish year after year – going to Disney
World – to meeting their favorite celebrity, to a room re-do, wishes
come in all shapes in sizes. For 30 years,
whatever their minds can imagine and
their hearts can dream, we do our best to
make a reality.
With gratitude,

Wishes in the
80s and 90s
In Nebraska, the magic
started 30 years ago. It was
1983, and after months
of illness, confusion, and
misdiagnosis, they finally
figured out 17-year-old Brenda had
a very aggressive life-threatening illness -- Osteosarcoma.
She was in for a fight, but she had just the spirit to do it. Brenda was
always spunky, outgoing, and determined. It’s what had made
her such a great athlete. But she’d have to hang up her basketball
shoes and focus on her treatment plans. But it was exhausting
and after losing her leg, her spirit was taking a hit. Then a doctor
recommended this new organization he had heard of called MakeA-Wish. Brenda and her family were able to escape her illness.
Brenda got to dream. She wanted to visit the happiest place on
earth. For a week, Brenda and her family went to Disney World and
they were able to forget about her battle and focus on just being a
kid again.
Brenda was the first “wish kid” in Nebraska and 30 years later she
has left an incredible legacy. It was with Brenda, that we learned
how to create an amazingly joyful experience on the wish. After
all, these moments are memories that can last a lifetime. Brenda’s
mom still remembers this experience as a wonderful
escape. “It was an incredible gift. Something we
could’ve never done on our own,” said Doris,
Brenda’s mom.
Wishes in the early days typically included travel to
places like Disney World or Sea World. However,
as children began dreaming, opportunities to
connect with celebrities emerged. Children
wished to meet Garth Brooks, Hulk Hogan, Will
Smith, and Michael Jackson.

In 1988, Tiffany wished to dance with Michael Jackson.
Now 40-years-old, she remembers so much of that time.
“My wish changed my life. I carry that with me every
minute of every day. Still today, not a day goes by that
I don’t think about my wish. Something changed in me
that day. It reminded me of what I was fighting for. I felt
so alive in that moment and I hadn’t felt that in a long
time, but to be in the middle of this giant swirl of hope
and joy is something that I still return to and can connect
with that feeling when I need it. Without a doubt, my wish
helped give me strength towards my recovery.”

Wishes from 2000-today
Alex (14),
Medulloblastoma,
Hawaii 2006
At the turn of the century, Make-A-Wish Nebraska
started granting around 80 wishes a year. A
statewide presence was important to ensuring
more children were reached. Offices in Lincoln
and Kearney were opened and volunteer teams
popped up in more communities throughout the
state. Categories of wishes emerged and ranged
from “I wish to be, I wish to have, I wish to go,
and I wish to meet”.
Seth (5), Pulmonary Hypertension,
DisneyWorld 2005
Kaylee (4), Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia,
Disney World 2006
Joshua (11), Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma,
Meet the President 2005
Children wished to be
firefighters, princesses, cowboys,
and even the president. As
11-year-old Joshua proudly told
the Secret Service Agent to “shine his shoes,”
you knew Joshua was living in the moment. No thoughts of doctor visits or
treatment plans. He was in control. And more than 10 years later, Joshua’s
parents still remember the impact of that experience. “I remember those
times like they were yesterday. Most days were very scary, but one bright
spot was his wish,” said Joshua’s mom.
While some wishes require plane
tickets and travel plans, others
remain quite simple. One that will
never be forgotten is Prabesh’s wish
to “ride a big yellow school bus.”
Prabesh simply wanted to turn 5 so
that he could go to school like kids
who were healthy.
Wishes come in all shapes and sizes,
and for 30 years we have been
committed to making each of them
a very special experience. As we
look toward the next 30 years, we
are grateful for all the partnerships
that make it all happen.
