Why advertise locally?
Local Matters: Research shows that life in the UK is local
✓
Why do 84% of UK adults read a regional or local newspaper? The answers can be found in a piece of research which shows that life is still lived very locally
(see the “magic circle” below).
✓
People in the UK today live the great majority of their lives - working, school, shopping, leisure and entertainment - within a 14 mile radius.
✓
Over half of us live within a 30 minute drive of our birthplace
✓
90% of home owners will move within a 10 mile radius
✓
Over 50% of people have lived in their present home for over 10 years
✓
Almost two-thirds of the British adult population still live within an hour’s journey of their mother and almost a third of us live less than 15 minutes away.

Newsquest Essex’ Aim
To provide an excellent news and advertising service throughout the county.
Serving the Community
The regional press is the backbone of Britain’s media, read by the vast majority of adults every week & considered to be the most trusted, responsible medium of all.
Regional newspapers are an integral part of the community, championing local causes, spearheading campaigns and fighting on behalf of readers.
From the largest regional daily to the smallest rural weekly, regional & local newspapers embody the identity of the villages, towns and cities they serve.

Why advertise locally?
Immediate Effectiveness
The effectiveness of regional press advertising in driving sales comes down to the simple fact that people tend to do most of their spending close to where they live, and when making purchasing
decisions they refer to a local source.
A national consumer survey (1) found that regional press advertising is the most frequently acted upon with 61% of people responding to advertising in the medium. The regional press is
considered to contain helpful advertising by almost three quarters of the adult population (72%).The study concluded that life is lived locally & that people prefer to shop close to home.
Business choice II is a national study
(1)
focusing on business people at all levels with responsibility for, or influence over, purchasing decisions in their work place.
It found that by far the highest percentage of people (49%) find the regional press to be the most useful medium for general business advertising and a quarter of business decision makers
believe the regional press to be the most useful source of information on local suppliers. The study also found that 54% of people recruit locally and 16% regionally.
Evidence proves that local newspapers have a specific, unique and powerful position in converting consumers along the buying process towards purchase:
• Research suggests that local press readers who are ‘in the market’ to make a purchase, actively seek information in the local press and are at the same time more alert to advertising
messages.
• Advertising in local press delivers high levels of awareness and awareness growth. The medium effectively delivers the message to its mass audience.
• Importantly, as well as message delivery, the local press advertising in the study can be shown to have the desired effect on consumers, significantly increasing brand health measures such
as familiarity and consideration, which ultimately drive consumers towards purchase.
‘In the market’ consumers have a greater average uplift in local press
awareness than all adults
Established, heavier spending advertisers (typically high street
retailers) who use local press as a core part of their schedule and
aim to sustain and grow advertising awareness, should maintain a
consistent presence over a sustained period of time
In all cases, increasing the use of
colour, volume, frequency and
extending campaign duration had a
positive impact upon effectiveness
New advertisers to the medium, branded and frequently purchased goods,
advertisers with low existing levels of awareness and/or advertisers seeking a
rapid burst of awareness growth, should employ a high use of colour and a
higher frequency of insertions
Using colour more than doubles the growth
in awareness of local press ads
Awareness of local press
campaigns with more than
two insertions weekly grew
at twice the rate of those
advertising at most, once a
fortnight
– 89% of the brands studied showed statistically significant increases in awareness. On average, awareness of
these campaigns increased by an average of 10%-points, a 77% uplift in awareness.
• Local press increases advertising awareness by an average of 10%-points
– Across the 26 campaigns on the study, on average there was a 10%-point increase in awareness of their
regional press advertising.
• Local press increases brand health
– 44% of those brands that achieved a statistically significant increase in awareness achieved a significant rise
in familiarity with the brand. And 25% of those brands that achieved a significant increase in awareness
achieved a significant increase in consideration. These findings underline the fact that while the messages get
through to consumers via local press, those messages are retained, and contribute considerably to an ultimat change in consumer behaviour.

Recruitment
Job Seeking
Local newspapers are by far the most popular medium when job seeking, and the first priority of the majority of jobseekers is to stay in the local area.
• 51% of adults go to the local paper first to find out about a new job
• This is significantly higher than any other medium or channel (the nearest channel, Jobcentre Plus, is only used first by 9% of browsers)
• Almost one-quarter of adults found their last job through the local paper. This was second only to those who relied on word-of-mouth, and much more popular than any other medium
The Job Market
Over half the UK adult population (16+) are either actively seeking work or open to a new job.
• 32% would consider a new job if they came across it
• 11% are always looking for a new job
• 11% have recently decided to look for a new job

LITTLE Jack Hewett’s visit to

to turn into all-nighter when
the coach left without him.

Jack, eight, of Copperfields,
Basildon, was left high and dry at
Grangewaters Outdoor Education
Centre, after his teachers failed to
notice he wasn’t onboard the bus.
The youngster, who goes to
Laindon Park Primary School,
had enjoyed a fun-filled day with
around 60 schoolmates.
But, at home time, as everyone
was piling back on to the coach,
Jack went to the toilet and got
locked inside.
By the time he managed to open
the door, there was no coach in
sight. He calmly went to the reception desk at the centre, in South
Ockendon, where a receptionist
called Jack’s school.
Although no harm was done,
Jack’s mum is furious, and wants
to know why the teachers didn’t
notice her son was missing.
Lisa Bracken, 32, said: “Thank
God nothing happened to him.
“How could they have not
noticed he was missing?”
The single mum, who also has a
one-year-old daughter, Demi-Rae,
said she will make an official complaint to Essex County Council.
Headteacher Cristina Portoles
said: “When the children were
boarding the coach to come home,
a child was left behind.
“The child made himself known
to staff at Grangewaters and they
informed the school. Within 15
minutes, the coach had returned
and picked up the missing child.”
The school is reviewing procedures and will implement a headcount and register for school trips
to ensure it does not happen again.

Skating rink and boating lake revamp
NEW council promises
have been pledged to
give a “neglected” town
its fair share of investment.
Stephen Mayzes, portfolio
holder
for
leisure, has
announced three major projects to revamp Harwich and
Dovercourt in an attempt to
improve the area.
The plans are to shell out
£50,000 on the ideas with the
hope of giving the town “that
feelgood factor”.
One initiative is for the entire
area, a second looks set to revamp
Dovercourt Skating Rink and a
third plans to regenerate Dovercourt Boating Lake.
by CAROLINE TILLEY
[email protected]
Mr Mayzes, pictured right, said:
“We will be detailing three future
investments for the town on July 7
and we are moving fast on these.
“The first is looking at Harwich
as a whole.
“We have got a report being created to do with this project and,
unfortunately, I cannot reveal what
it will entail at the moment.
“The second is the remodelling of
the boating lake.
“And the last is a very important
one because we want to remodel
the skating rink.
“I would love to see that open for
the summer holidays to get more
people into the town.”
Mr Mayzes added that it was
NEW LOOK: Dovercourt Skating

hoped the “pro-active initiative”
would make Harwich and Dovercourt more upbeat.
“The problem is Harwich has
been neglected,” he said.
“We keep saying we are going to

do something but nothing ever gets
done.
“Every area needs to have that
feelgood factor.
“What has been invested in Clacton is probably too much.
“It has just taken the edge off the
other parts of the district and we
are now focused on making sure
that Harwich gets its fair share of
the investment.”
But a stark warning has been
issued that these initiatives are
being undertaken before the end of
the year because Tendring Council
is expecting “financial difficulties”.
“We want to do these projects
now while we can,” said Mr
Mayzes.
“Very soon we are going to face
financial difficulties, which will
mean we won’t be able to spend
any more money.”

ANY hospital development

More than ten weeks after
NHS Mid Essex sent its
strategic outline case to
the strategic health
authority, it has been sent
back for more work to be
done on it.
His attackers left him on his boat at Fullbridge Quay, Maldon, and it was only by chance
that he was discovered some ten hours later.
Chelmsford Crown Court heard police on an
entirely separate matter had gone to 61-year-old
Mr Woodrow’s boat.
by PAUL HANNAH
[email protected]
Martyn Levett, prosecuting, said: “Officers
knocked on his window and Mr Woodrow stumbled to the door. He was entirely bloodstained,
very weak, but able to tell police who one of his
attackers was.”
Three men deny attempting to murder Mr
Woodrow on his boat, called the Bonny, at Fullbridge Quay on October 13 last year.

Clean-up: Council leader Louise McKinlay gets to work on the cricket pavilion
A WEEK-LONG clean-up of
Brentwood has been branded
a success.
The first ever Love Where
You Live Week, run by
Brentwood Council between
June 7 and 14, saw seven
groups target the streets and
parks of the borough.
Litter, chewing gum and
graffiti were all targeted by
the groups.
People taking part have
been entered into a competition to win £500 of vouchers
to spend on improvements to
their area, from fresh paint
for community halls to
plants for village greens.
Council leader Louise
McKinlay, who also helped
by painting a public toilet
block and the old cricket
pavilion in Warley Park, said
she was impressed by people’s efforts.
She said: “I’m delighted so
many community groups
have decided to get involved.
“Although the week has
now finished, I see this as
just the start.
“We will be looking at
ways keep the momentum
going and build on the success of the seven days.”
Tragic death of cyclist
Steven Rodway
A FATHER-OF-TWO has
been tragically killed while
training for a charity bike
ride.
Steven Rodway’s family
have paid tribute to him
after he was killed while
cycling
at
Stapleford
Tawney early on Sunday,
June 13, evening.
Mr
Rodway,
38,
of
Brentwood, was cycling on
the A113 Ongar Road when
he was involved in a crash
with a silver Ford Puma.
Emergency services were
called and paramedics and a
doctor treated him at the
scene.
Sadly he could not recover
from his injuries and Mr
Rodway, an assessor for a
Woodford insurance firm,
was pronounced dead.
Police had to close the
road for five-and-a-half
hours while they investigated the crash.
Mr
Rodway’s
widow
Marissa said her family had
been deeply affected by her
husband’s death.
She said: “Steven was a
dearly loved husband and
proud father to Harriott and
Erica.
“Steven liked skiing, DIY,
music and had an interest in
cars.
“He was also training for a
local charity bike ride event,
and that was what he was
doing when he was tragically killed.
“All the family members
and friends will greatly miss
Steven very much.”
Police have appealled for
witnesses to the crash.
Call Chigwell road policing unit on 0300 3334444.
« A 20-year-old woman from
Brentwood, and a 21-year-old
man from Loughton, were
arrested on suspicion of
dangerous driving.
Both have been released
on bail until September 14.
Engineers are due to start work
widening the London ring road at junction 28 later this month, which will last
until next year.
During some nights, slip roads leading on or off the motorway at the Brook
Street roundabout will be closed, leading to detours of up to 20 miles for people wanting to join or leave at the busy
junction.
But the Highways Agency has said it
has worked to minimise delays.
Peter O’Connor, spokesman for the
organisation, said: “There may be the
odd occasion where the four slip roads
from the A12 to the M25 might have to
be closed.
“But it will only be at night and the
different slip roads will be closed at different times.
“Those occasions will be dates to be
fixed, but it will only be the odd occasion and motorists will be informed.”
Mr O’Connor added detours would
vary depending on which direction
motorists were travelling from.
The worst affected could be drivers
travelling from the junction 26 area at
Waltham Abbey to Brentwood.
In some cases, those drivers could
divert onto the M11 at junction 27, travelling to Redbridge and then turning on

by ADAM GAUDRY
to the A12, taking the dual carriageway
to Brentwood.
But Mr O’Connor added: “For some
traffic they may have to take that route.
“But there are always a number of
different options and drivers can make
up their own minds about how and
when they travel.
“If we leave the road the congestion
will only grow.”
Work to widen the M25 from three to
four lanes between junctions 27 and 30
began last year and is due to finish in
2012.
During the work between junction 28
and 27, engineers have put up average
speed cameras and reduced the speed
limit to 50mph.
The Highways Agency has said the
scheme is working to schedule.

chances of winning

the unluckiest fan
in the world is staying at home.
Peter Whalley, 43,
landlord of the Woolpack pub in Coggeshall,
has been present every

crashed out of a tournament since 1990.
He saw Gazza’s tears in
Turin, and a succession of
epic failures up to England losing on penalties in
Germany four years ago.
Mr Whalley said: “The
most gut-wrenching was
the loss to Argentina [in
1998].
“I was sitting with the
Argentina fans and I had
an England shirt on.
“Japan was really scary.
It’s completely different, a
real culture shock.”
He estimates he has
spent hundreds of thousands of pounds following
England and his other
team, Manchester United,
over the years.
As well as witnessing
England choke on the big
stages, he was present
when United lost the
Champions League final to
Barcelona in 2009.

Mr Whalley is staying put,

Pub’s pitch invasion
celebrates World Cup
WORLD Cup fever has taken
hold of a Shoebury pub where
the atmosphere of the pitch
has been recreated with lush
green turf.
Parsons Barn, in Frobisher Way,
Shoebury, has been transformed
into a football supporter’s paradise for the 2010 World Cup tournament after the landlord covered
the inside floor with garden turf
and painted white lines on it to
recreate a football pitch.
The patriotic pub has also been
covered with England flags,
streamers and banners as well has
having an additional three flatscreen televisions installed, both
inside and outside the pub so punters can enjoy the big games.
Landlord Mark Wenn, 48, said:
“I want to put Southend on the
map and make this pub the only
place to watch the World Cup
matches.
“The pub looks great and the
turf is lovely and green. I got the
turf from one of the customers.
“It is something different to do
to get the pub in the World Cup
spirit.
“I will give it a bit of a water in
the evening and if it needs it a bit
of a cut and once it is taken up I
will get the carpet cleaned.
“Everyone thinks I am mad and
a bit crazy, but it is all a bit of fun.”
The 100 rolls of turf will remain
in the pub for as long as England
remain in the tournament and
both the landlord and the staff
have high hopes England will
make it to the final.
The Norwich City supporter
continued: “All the customers who
have come in have been laughing
their heads off because none of
them thought I would actually go
through with it. Some of the staff
have got England shirts and some
of the ladies will be wearing
England headbands.”

Campaigners set to
battle Barratt’s plans
A DEVELOPER wants to build
239 homes on a controversial
patch of

Thundersley, despite fierce
opposition.
Hands Off Our Green Belt
sprung up almost two years ago
when it was first revealed Barratt
Homes was interested in the 50acre site north of Daws Heath

Homes near the site have been
displaying red and yellow posters
bearing the slogan Hands Off Our

But despite the hostility towards
the plans, Barratt has submitted an
application to Castle Point Council.
Campaign
spokesman
Paul

said: “It’s annoying to see Barratt
is keeping on with these plans.
“It obviously doesn’t take any

to keep the pressure up and fight
our corner. The fight is back on.”
Barratt has applied for outline
permission for 239 homes, with
new access, parking and landscaping.
The details of the plans have not
been made public yet as the application is still being validated by
Castle Point Council.
Hands Off Our Green Belt
believes Barratt Homes is pushing
the plans ahead because the new
coalition Government intends to
scrap targets for new homes and
the developer wants to beat any
changes in the planning law.

Advertising Opportunities
What is Banner Advertising?
Co-Partnership
• Banner advertising comes in many different forms; they are the
advertising strips that you see at the top and bottom of the web pages
and the boxes that run down the side of our pages
• Many opportunities exist for advertisers to receive assistance from major
manufacturers with the promotion of their products
• Banners deliver the message of your choice and encourage users to
click through to your website or any specific page
• Banner advertising is exceedingly effective when targeting key sections of our
websites. Our digital media team is on hand to recommend the best campaign
schedule suited to your particular requirements
• This can take the form of covering part or all of the cost of advertising or
promotional assistance
• Ask your Newsquest Essex sales executive about the wide range of opportunities
available to your company
Anniversary Feature

sponsorship in various sections of our newspapers and magazines

raise awareness of your business, we can help design a feature for you
• From “a day in the life” of your business, to a feature supported by your

“wrap” around our free newspapers
• With this volume of traffic we can create advertising campaigns which will
help drive traffic to your business from different forms of advertising such as
sponsorship, banner advertising, pop-ups, company profile pages and directory
links
• A wrap is effectively an additional sheet of newspaper (4 pages minimum) that
wraps around the main newspaper and contains our masthead and dateline
echo-news.co.uk
gazette-news.co.uk
• Effectively your business is purchasing four full pages of advertising: the
front page, the inside front, inside back and back page
• This helps your business to maximise its advertising message
Page Positions
• We realise that some advertisers have a preference for a certain page or
position in the newspaper
• With places at a premium we now offer the opportunity for you to reserve your
desired page position – subject to availability and editor agreement

What are the different types of papers in our portfolio
Paid for titles
ABC - Audit Bureau of Circulation – Independent audit watchdog service verifying the circulation of paid for newspapers and the distribution of free newspapers.
These newspapers have a compulsory cover price and will be available from an extensive network of newsagents and retail outlets across an appropriate geographic area.
A paid for newspaper will reach an attentive audience of readers who have chosen to purchase it meaning that reader interest and retention is high.
Free titles
In the main, these titles are delivered to homes free of charge. They can also be picked up in retail outlets and places of business such as estate agents.
Our range of free titles offer blanket coverage of the vast majority of areas across Essex, being put through the letterboxes and reaching an audience directly in their homes, meaning that no
extra effort is spent on the part of the reader to have our newspapers in front of them.
Daily Titles
We are proud to be the publishers of the only two daily titles dedicated to Essex; the Echo in the south and the Gazette in the north of the county.
Both papers are published Monday to Friday and are paid for titles. These two titles are the very best at keeping their local communities up to date with daily news and advertising. Delivered
direct to subscribers' homes or available in shops alongside the national daily papers each morning.
Weekly Titles
These newspapers are delivered or available to buy towards the end of each week (depending on the title) presenting our readers with a round up of the news in their area and top quality
advertising.
Combining titles
Each title will have two factors from the above to describe its type, for example a newspaper will be paid or free as well as daily or weekly.
The ideal way to reach the optimum number of potential customers is to use a mixture of types. For example a free weekly newspaper reaches a high volume of people in a targeted area and
a paid for title is selected specially for reading by its audience giving the perfect combination of blanket area coverage and high reader retention.
