Warranty-New Home, General Contractors
Liability, and Builder's Risk insurance products.
Here are some of our most frequently asked
questions:
What does this mean to me?
BiiP products have been researched and are
admitted, meaning the products are solid, following all
state regulations and are the best coverage and best
value for each insurance product for our members.
BiiP Products can provide you and your clients with
comprehensive insurance packages from reputable
organizations. BiiP Qualified Agents meet stringent
qualification standards to be able to sell the products
available through BiiP.
Are there other products available?
Not yet, but your BIAW Insurance Work Group is
currently researching additional BiiP insurance
opportunities, and plans to expand the list of offered
products in the future.
Where can I get more information or
purchase?
Only from a BiiP Qualified Agent. BiiP Qualified
Agents meet stringent requirements and standards to
be able to sell the products available through BiiP.
To find more information about the program or to locate qualified agents, click on Building Industry
Insurance under the BIAW Programs tab at
www.BIAW.com; or just type in http://biaw/com/

And, remember, by purchasing BiiP products, you are
supporting your Local Association and fellow members, as well as BIAW.
BIAW’s Insurance Program!
The Building Industry Association of Washington
(BIAW) and SICBA are proud to introduce the Building
Industry Insurance Program (BiiP).
The BiiP is an exclusive BIAW member benefit that
allows members the opportunity to purchase competitive insurance products through member insurance
agents.

Welcome to April! I hope your spring
isn’t draining down your neck to awfully
bad. Looking back at March 2014, the
month came in like a lion but also went
out like one for your association. The
month kicked off at the Olympia Red
Thom Richter
“Lion” with the BIAW Winter Board
Pharaoh’s Const.
Meeting where SICBA was well represented and saw our own Bob Johnson presiding as well as
your immediate past President Gary Wray recognized by
the Associate Advisory Council. Many good things came out
of the committee meetings and networking events.
As the month came to an end we saw a great networking
event that kicked off our 34th Annual Home & Garden Show.
In the wettest March on record the skies cleared for three
days and allowed a great show to be had. As a participant I
can say that the people attending the show were qualified
and ready to go.
Rolling into April our focus turns on tax day, and we
planned our monthly celebration accordingly by scheduling
the April networking event on the 15th at Randy Heagle’s
“Party Barn”. A night that is much anticipated annually.
Don’t miss this opportunity to rub elbows and network on
Camano Island. I hope to see you there.

We would like to thank everyone who helped with this

Mount Vernon if you want more information on getting
the most out of your membership and feel more
comfortable asking others to join SICBA. Begin your

you could earn TRIPLE Spike Points in this year’s

Programs Committee
Chair is Tom Hagge
We had our Afterhours Networking Event at the
Skagit County Fairgrounds to kick off the SICBA Home
and Garden Show on March 20th. Although the
7
weather was good, it was great to be indoors and not
worry about the weather. There was lots of good food
and drinks, and games that many of you participated
in. Congratulations to those who took home some
prizes. The games were a preview to what we are
considering for our annual tradeshow in September.
More information will be coming on that event in future
newsletters.
April will be Camano Islands turn. We will be meeting
at the Party Barn on Camano Island for an Afterhours
Networking Event on Tuesday, April 15th 5pm to
7pm. These events fill up fast, so please get your reservations in early. If you have not attended an event at
the Party Barn, you have got to come to this event to
experience the Heagle’s hospitality!!!
I am always going to try and promote these events to
our membership. Lots of wonderful members spend a
lot of their own time to plan and present these activities. If you do not attend these events, for whatever
reason, you are missing out on a great opportunity to
gather with fellow SICBA members and enjoy the hospitality of some of our members. It is also a time to
learn what these members can provide to you and your
company as well. These meetings are a time to get to
know other members in a relaxed environment, so
please come and participate and let us get to know you
too!
Mark your calendars for our future events:
Tuesday, May 20th 6pm to 9pm – SICBA Awards
Night at Eaglemont Golf Course in Mount Vernon.
More details in future newsletters.
Tuesday, June 17 will be an Afterhours Networking
Event at Peoples Bank in Oak Harbor. Always a good
time.
The next committee meeting is Tuesday, April 8th at
3:30pm at Round Table Pizza in Mount Vernon. If you
want to help in planning & assisting at the SICBA
events, feel free to join this committee!

As you can see, SICBA’s March event was
quite fun. If you missed it, you certainly need to
be sure and schedule to attend next year.
This was an opportunity for members to come
and see what was in store for them over the
weekend of the SICBA Home and Garden Show.
Vendors that were in the show were also invited
to attend and share their stories with our
members, to network and have a great amount of fun. The food vendors
from the show were the ones who provided the heavy hors d’ oeuvres for the
evening along with Max Dale’s and The Farmhouse Restaurant. Everything
was good as usual and everyone had a great time!
The SICBA Programs Committee really stepped up this time and provided
fun games where someone could win a prize. There was no cost to these
games and even if someone came and didn’t want to eat, they could play the
games as well. Mike from KBRC was our MC for the night and as always, he
does a very nice job getting everyone involved.
During this event, a veteran’s group from Bellingham came and presented
a check to the Wounded Warriors in Action Foundation since that would be
the only time they would be together during the weekend and be able to
meet with John Koenig from the Foundation.
The playhouses were open for everyone to visit, enjoy and to vote for their
favorite. Hopefully everyone did just that. In the end, the playhouse that
won people’s choice was the WWIAF Playhouse that was built by the Moe
Family and Wray Bros LLC. But, all 5 were very nicely done and should
have been something any child would be happy to call theirs!
We ended the evening with some of the drawings that are only for SICBA
members. The retention drawing went to Pacific Window and Door Store
and they will receive a free dinner at our event at the Party Barn on Camano
Island on April 15th. The Membership Bonus Drawing was also held and the
winner was Lawn Salon Landscaping Services who was unfortunately not
there to take home the $150. So the pot will be $200 in April.
Our next event is on Camano Island. For more information on that event
see the flyer on the next page.

Stop by 789 Chrysler Dr. in Burlington or give us a call at 360-299-0430 and we will be happy to address your needs for you.

This was written for NAHB, but applies to SICBA membership as well!
"X, Y, BOOM'"
Submitted by Michael Kurpiel, CGA, CGP
"The Times They Are a-Changin'" was released in 1964 which,
coincidentally, is the same year as the end of the baby boomer
births. I happen to be part of that generation …. After more
than a quarter of a century as a member, spending some of
those years engaged in leadership roles, I am figuratively and
literally a gray beard. I remember, like it was yesterday, my
first day on my local's board of directors, age 34. I was "that"
group of membership, the new kid on the block, but still, I was a
baby boomer. As one of the new and younger board members,
my thoughts and ideas were heard, but not truly listened to by my elder statesman (and one woman which was another
issue back then!) on the board. Well, here I am almost 20 year later and I'm the elder statesman. I realized something
along the way; I was taught to mentor, to listen to other, fresher points of view and to make sure I did my part to prepare
the association for the future, well after I was gone.
The association wasn't meant for me to rule. The association was meant to protect my industry and safeguard it to the
best of my volunteer abilities. The one thing I did not do was think about the next generation. Lately, over the past 5-6
years, I self-taught social media mechanics and application, created Facebook pages and LinkedIn groups as well as engaged on Twitter. What I didn't realize was the next generation, X and Y, were already here in full force on social media.
The millennials are as well. I then look around our federation and realize we are not making inroads towards the future of
NAHB.
When we get married and start families, we are setting the course for our family's continued growth. We raise our children
into adults, preparing them to start their own families perhaps. And on it goes. This is the way it has been for life, but why
would we think our association is different from life? Are we preparing our "family" for its future or are we living in the here
and now and letting the next generation fend for themselves?
Just so you know, the average age of an NAHB member is now 56 years old with the average age of our board over 60
years old. Where is the youth? Where will the future protectors of NAHB come from? We can certainly try and invite Gen
X & Y, but they need to have a focused purpose. They have young families that take away or limit their volunteer time. X
& Y have a dramatically different business climate to navigate and it's extremely difficult to break free for extended periods
of time. Even if X & Y could participate, would they be listened to by the 50 plus year old NAHB leaders, who sometimes
could be set in their ways and have no appetite for change, in discussions of association direction?
Change is going to happen whether the current NAHB leaders believe that or not. They just have to remember back when
they were the new kids on the block. If we don't begin to incorporate the next generation everything we baby boomers
worked for within NAHB will be in jeopardy of fading away. If you believe what you are currently doing as a volunteer is for
the greater good of our industry, you would be derelict in your role as an NAHB leader not to embrace the envitable; we
must bring in the next generation. Now.
Gen X & Y will not;
participate if the purpose is not clearly defined
engage if meetings are long and not settled with a clear cut decision of action
will not leave their families for full weeks at a time
will not want to be involved with political positioning of others
NAHB Membership committee is currently forming a working group to start looking at tools to help the locals recruit Gen X
& Y into the local, as members first, and then mentor to bring them into association leaders. This working group will not
have the traditional members or staff, meaning those who have been around. No, this working group is being comprised
of, wait for it..... Gen X & Y members and staff. Hopefully, when all is said and done, the findings of this group will be sent
out for discussion. Generational change starts at the grass roots level which are the local HBAs. This gray beard fully understands that change will come. I won't resist, I'll embrace. What say you?
